How will this go on the Aldi network? Get the full Telstra coverage with 4g? Frequency GSM 900/1800/1900MHz

    • +1

It should be fine. Being from China means it doesn't have compatibility with the newer band 28 (700 MHz LTE band).

      • +3

The most important one in rural areas.

    • My Redmi Note 3 is quite happy with Aldi mobile.

    • 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500)

From the specs I have dug up p at gsmarena

    • Runs fine on Aldi. Like many OS phones, they dont have band 28 of 4G (just one of the Telstra 4G bands).

      eg. 80Mbps+ speeds.

Phone still gets the other 4G bands and drops back to 3G if cannot find a 4G band.

      • +1

If you live in Canberra there is a big difference in not having it. Unsure about other places.

        • What difference?

        • @bargainaus: Yes, please elaborate. I have an Elephone in Canberra and don't get 4G here but do when I go to Sydney. Sounds like you know why… Looking for a new phone atm.

        • +8

@matrix83: 4G in canberra runs on Band 28 (700mhz), which means if your phone doesn't support that band you wont get 4G (switches down to 3g). Whereas in Sydney 4G runs on a fair few different bands all of which have different speeds (28/700 being one of or the fastest)

Also - (i'm assuming you are with telstra)

To complicate things further you may see phones that run on 700mhz (same frequency as band 28) but they are actually a different band that suits an overseas carrier so i would make sure that B28 (700) is in the specs :)

          clear as mud! hehe

        • +2

          @scud70:
Haha yeah the guy above has laid it out pretty technically.

Basically Telstra and optus use 4g bands in Canberra that don't usually come on phones from some jurisdictions. Some international versions do though, a quick Google of the phone model number to check or just usually by reading the ozbargainer comments will usually confirm if it has band 28. But yeah it's less important in other cities.

        • @matrix83: LTE700 (band 28) is used by Telstra and Optus, which is the latest network update branded by Telstra as "4GX" network. This 700MHz frequency has better coverage and better penetration of buildings, comparing with LTE1800 or LTE2100 or LTE2300 or LTE2600.

        • @scud70: I live in Canberra and have a Nexus 5 on Boost. This probably explains why i get shit speed.

        • @leftspeaker2000: i think there is No 4GX (band 28) access if your on boost and because Canberra seems to run all 4g on that band (28) you'll be basically on 3g. Even if you got a phone with band 28 if your on boost i dont think you'd get it :) … im only going by what the guys post up re Canberra 4g :) … in this case i wouldn't blame the phone hehehe

        • @scud70: Argh, that sucks. Here i have been defending boost to all of my friend saying its the same as being on telstra. FML.

        • @leftspeaker2000: it is for the most part … except in Canberra hehehehe

      • +1

Optus also use band 28, not just telstra.

        • +2

Yep and therefore amaysim (which I use).

        • @RI4V4N:

Same here. Thanks to the posts above.

    • Currently using this phone with Aldi, no problems. I'm in Sydney.

  • What is the difference between this and the Hong Kong version from DWI?

    • Possibly the Hong Kong version has a ROM tailored for the HK market.

      • Is it easy to reflash the ROM?

        • its easy if you know what your doing. the process itself is very simple and there are guides that take you step by step. need a 64 bit windows PC

        • @imtahir7:

I did a few before, is the phone already come with recovery that I can just copy the ROM onto the phone to flash it?

        • @superforever:

dont think so because its got a locked bootloader

        • @imtahir7:

          OK, is bootloader unlockable?

        • @superforever:

it is, but you have to apply to get it unlocked from the MIUI website.

        • @imtahir7:

That is why I want to buy the Hong Kong version to prevent all the trouble.

        • @superforever: don't go through the painful process of applying to unlock the bootloader. If you Google search, you will find a few options on how to flash the global rom.

        • +1

          @superforever:

Contrary to @stocktastics, I applied for the unlock the day I bought mine from Banggood and the approval came through 2 days after my phone arrived. It really isn't a big deal IMO

        • @ebosh:

Do you need the phone serial number or something to request an unlock?

        • @ebosh:

Is there OTA update with global ROM?

        • Yes. Its not hard at all, took me 10 minutes. I haven't heard of anyone hard bricking their phone doing it, the absolute worst was a soft brick which wasnt that hard to fix

        • @Pacify:

OK thanks, I will go for it. This is the cheapest silver/White version at the moment. DWI asked for $300.

        • @superforever:

If you have any issue or need the guide to flash, https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2490483&… has plenty of advice

        • @Pacify:

          Your another post said:

"You only need the bootloader unlocked if you plan to install a customn rom like ASOP. I flashed from vendor to global just fine without it"

I only want stable global rom, so I don't need to unlock the bootloader and just download and copy the stable global rom and flash it? The recovery already have the option to flash?

    • The difference is the price. It is the same phone though.

    • +2

Read the FAQ on the Aliexpress listing, also the product desription for the CN and HK versions at DWI.

It sounds like it's a vendor ROM and such ROM's don't get OTA official updates from MIUI.

If you reflash with an official ROM (in order to get OTA updates) then you void warranty from the seller.

However, given the price, that may be a worthwhile risk to take for what is otherwise and exceptionally great value, high performance phone.

  • does it have Google play store from which I can install apps?

  • +4

How is this vs the LeTV Le One Pro just posted? What would people recommend best of the two?

    • +2

this is better. about the same cpu, screen res is better on the other one, same with ram. but i know id sure as shit choose this brand over that, this has much better support/software and build quality is amazing.

      • +4

And don't forget about the huge battery. If battery life is important to you then don't look back.

        • +3

And this has SD card support too

  • +2

I am not sure what they mean? So come with global rom or not?

"1. Does it have Google Play and Multi-language?
Yes, it does. If you don’t ask for factory firmware, we need to open the box and install official global firmware. This firmware can’t be updated."

    • +1

There is a Please Note section at the site which might answer your question, superforever:

"2, Please leave us a message if you want a sealed box. Otherwise we will unseal the box to do "Quality Control" and install the Multi-language ROM and Google play!"

    • Would it mean they will install global firmware by default ?

    • It would have a vendor rom, that has Google play but isnt the official Global version

      • +1

why do they load a vendor ROM over the official ROM? I'm sure they would get more sales if they just loaded the official ROMs

        • Plus band 28.

        • That is a good question. Who knows?

        • Google Play, Google Play Services and English is the main reason.

  • I brought one for less than 10 dollar more early and now on its way

you can request them to put in the international ROM with google play for free. Else it will be original xiaomi china region rom.

Personally if it weren't a gift, I wouldn't mind doing the ROM install myself.

I played my friends sample for a day, it is very surprisingly good compare to top of the last gen devices such as honor 6 and mi pro. The camera is on par in day light but not as good in low light against those previous gen flagships, for everything else, they are pretty much identical in how the ROM feels.

  • Does cyanogenmod support the dual sims? thanks

  • OP, pls mention "Pro" in the title.

  • +1

Damn, the 32gb is already down to the price I paid for the 16gb, insane. such a great phone for that price

  • +1

I bought one, wondering if the CASHREWARDS lotto will track my item…… im not holding my breath

    • +1

That's gotten better recently - or maybe I just found the correct page recently.

      http://www.cashrewards.com.au/clicks

That page shows you which clicks you've made, so you can double-check that you're registered as having clicked through before purchasing.

    Dark Grey is not available???

  • +3

Thanks op. I bought one for my mum. Paid in USD with a coles prepaid reloadable, as per the other ozbargain post about no international transaction fees :)

  • +2

Never purchased from Aliexpress before. I normally pay by paypal on Ebay/geekbuying etc… but it's not available on Aliexpress. How do people pay on there for security?

    Thanks.

    • +6

No problems paying with credit card. They don't release funds to the seller until you confirm its arrived and working well.
Returns and dispute process is excellent and tipped towards buyer.

      • +2

        Never heard of that.

        • +3
        • @Wiggam:

So they still take your money it's not like money only gets taken when you are happy that was misleading and can be interpreted a different way.

        • +2

@paloverde88: Money gets taken from Credit card and held by Alibaba/Aliexpress until you confirm arrival of items and functioning, then released to merchant.
If you dispute, Alibaba negotiate partial or full refund and returns process.

I haven't had an issue with well over 100 orders to date from various merchants.

      • Thanks for that. So the credit card details are only kept by Aliexpress and not given to each merchant you buy from?

Just feel more secure with PayPal and not having to give credit card details away.

        Thanks.

        • +1

Agree completely that Paypal seems more secure.
Merchant on Aliexpress doesn't get details, its all handled by Aliexpress/Alibaba and this is one seriously big and reputable company.

I have been using Aliexpress for 3 years now for many orders, never any issues with returns/refunds and nofraud on credit cards to date, touch wood…

        • @Wiggam:

          touch wood

          Morning one?

  • Slightly aside from this actual deal… is it worth waiting for the new Asus Zenfones 3's or just go with this one? I understand the high end version will be priced higher than this Xiaomi, however what about the "lesser" models?

    • Love the new zenfone 4 with 6 gig ram!

  • +1

I've got the redmi 3 pro (not the Redmi NOTE 3 pro). The "global/english rom" that is flashed was a custom manufacturer rom with no updates. I ended up having to:

    • side load chinese global rom
    • run unlocking tool (my understanding is there is a waiting period, but unsure)
    • Then install global rom.
    • luckily its not that hard for the pro

      • still, assuming its not locked you've still got to:

        download the correct rom
        install software and drivers
        flash bootloader and install rom

        • Yep. biggest issues are the size of the ROM, and the fact you need a windows PC

  • This phone comes with vendor ROM with no official update from xiaomi? And I can ask for global ROM with Google play store installed but they will have to open the box and void the store warranty? Am I correct in this understanding? I want to be sure before I pull the trigger. I want a global rom with play store. Thank you.

    • +1

Depends on the seller. 'Top one' for example leaves the rom intact if requested. Because they leave the stock rim, it's easy to go to the global ROM by just placing the zip in the phone and using the inbuilt updater. If they send the phone with a vendor then you have to flash it manually and takes half an hour.

Best to ask them before buying whether they can send you a sealed package with no rom modification.

      • +2

I'm not sure if it's the same for the note, but my redmi 3 pro (same processor) is one of the first of it's kind with a locked bootloader. That means i had to sideload the CN Dev rom, run the unlocking tool, then flash the EU rom manually.

It went fine, but it did take time and internet bandwidth. Also, you need a 64 bit windows operating system.

    • As per above, i have a slightly different phone (same processor though) - and from a different seller.

Yeah it was a vendor rom, with, what i could tell was an older version of MiU and wasn't current. NFI if it would update in the future. It did come with google store, and installed google play apps with no issues. Remember MiU is a modified version of android, and AFAIK it isn't possible/common(?) to flash pure android straight on.

There are 2 main differences imo.

      1. There is no app menu. Everything goes onto the "desktop", which you can push into folders. The benefit is that you can uninstall straight from the desktop, however a big downside is that it gets cluttered, and folders are not in alphabetical order without manually sorting.
      2. google stuff like the non removable google search/siri bar is removed.

So little differences, it's fine though, i like it.

      • just install nexus launcher, fixes the app menu into standard android

  • LOL bank won't allow transaction to aliexpress

    • +2

What bank? Never heard of this.

    • +4

It's your money. Time to choose a professional bank, instead.

  • -4

Bought it last week for higher price from Aliexpress :( can i price match or get a bit of a refund?

    • Price match with whom?

    • +3

      You should try at officeworks

  • How does this compare to lg g3? My LG decided to get the slow fading black non responsive screen after 2-30 seconds of screen time. Also occassionally cant read sim cards so need to turn it on and off 3 or 4 times.

    • +2

Replaced my G3 with this. Fantastic upgrade. I miss double tap to wake (and the camera, to be honest), but everything else blows the G3 away.

      • Yeah knock code and camera. The camera on this is inferior

        • am in the same boat! Time to replace g3

      • If this is the same as the Mi Max then double tab to wake is there. You just have to enable it.

        • It is not present on Display Settings on the Redmi Note 3, unfortunately

    • +1

I gave my G3 to my wife and grabbed one of these a month or 2 ago. I love it, except just like @Vinbie I miss the camera quality and the tap-to-wake. Otherwise the battery is fantastic, the screen is really nice and it is speedy. With an unlocked bootloader it is even more attractive as there are now a host of ROM's trickling onto the scene (I'm running AOSP 5.1 on mine and everything is running perfect, including the fingerprint reader).

      • The battery life on my G3 is so sad now. I'm lucky to get 3hrs of screen on time. But I would miss tap to wake and the camera a lot. Oh and my G3 is terribly laggy quite often. How are you finding the battery on your new Redmi?
