Which particular joke? There are a number of clever quips in here.

You'll need to give a hint about which hint you need.

  • Title needs to be updated to 439L
Price is $149 in all NSW locations I checked, so it looks like a specific location or area discount only.

    • +1

Hang on, isn't it just the 302L on sale? The description is a bit difficult to understand though as the title states 302L but the description states 439L. OP, I think you've got the 439L specs, not the 302L specs listed. Please update.

Thanks, I am clearly not smart, as I clicked on the second link, the one th eOP wanted to buy, and then used the soecs for.
So title stays as is, specs need to be updated to reflect this.

  • Looking for one of these that's lockable. Could a hasp and staple be fitted without too much trouble?

    • Looks to be a padlock hole already there but it all depends on how 'secure' you want it to be.

      • Oh I can see that now. Cool. It's just to keep the honest people out.

        • 'Honest people' may be able to lift the lid corners up and get to whatever you're trying to secure inside however that may be difficult due to the way the struts are mounted.

    Hi OP.
Would you think this would be suitable to storing bulk dog food?
Is the seal good enough to keep pests out?

    Thanks.

    • Also interested, but for chook feed

    • Dog or horse, it's a decent size box. Looking at the pics, the internal walls are ribbed, so it will get messy and unhygienic over time. You would want a container with a smooth wall.

    • I am actually not sure as i am yet to pick up from the store but its quite sturdy and well built.

  • Bought the 439L a year ago. I didn't lock it properly yet the seal is pretty good. Still completely dry inside.

  • Bought 1 at full price. Would like to get another but don't seem to have any left in WA.

Got one - Great for Battery Box for the Solar system

    • Don't you have it wall mounted? I only got solar yesterday so unsure of what you mean

      • GC67 is referring to his battery storage bank which up until the new-tech Tesla Power Wall has traditionally been heavy, low-voltage, deep cycle, lead acid batteries which you wouldn't want to hang off a wall due to the size & weight. A box like this is a nice way to pretty them up and give them a bit of protection.

I assume you are referring to a wall-mounted inverter, right? If so then you probably wouldn't have battery storage.

        • Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I just have the inverter. I'm waiting until the battery tech improves a bit. I read somewhere the Tesla Power Walls aren't that great for solar…

  • Looks good for sticking on the transom of the yacht

The one-star and 3-star reviews show that some had an issue with pieces not being right when putting it together. Could be a potential problem for some users.

  • +2

    I just finished assembling mine.

    • plastics are of good quality
    • hinge is worthy of note
    • assembly could have been easier
    • it's odd to see a manufacturer's assembly manual stapled together on the top-left (like you would do at home with a stapler and regular paper). But no big deal.

    assembly notes
LIFETIME has a couple of assembly videos on YouTube; a separate one for the box & another one for the lid. I'll make some notes.
    * https://youtu.be/-Wm8wcOdA4s?t=11 "slide the rear panel to the left, as far as it will go". I couldn't slide them to the left without rotating the whole unit vertically & then pushing down.
    * https://youtu.be/-Wm8wcOdA4s?t=34 This step was my first real problem. I had one part that was hard to slide in. I can see why they recommend a mallet (which I don't have). Tried hitting it to make it fit properly into the notches and it took some time to get it in there before I could slide the piece down. I only had a problem on one side; the other sides were fine.
    * https://youtu.be/-Wm8wcOdA4s?t=60 Here I was like "ok, so the screw is supposed to not go in straight" but I was afraid I was going to pierce the base plastic on the way out. Seems it could have been done a bit more elegantly.
    * https://youtu.be/hB_qr4oW8j0?t=37 Here I found it useful to push down on the metal before putting a screw through the plastic. It's easy to get it wrong & go too close to the plastic's edge. You really have to press into the plastic to get the ball rolling for many of these steps where you have to screw in.
    * https://youtu.be/hB_qr4oW8j0?t=93 This hinge uses no ball studs but the manual on Page 13 says (x4) (meaning 4 ball studs are supplied). This is inaccurate. I was freaking out for a while, wondering if I should have to return mine. Careless manual-writing. I can't believe nobody checked this at the company before shipping out thousands of these (presumably thousands), but then maybe they figure that nobody reads the parts lists. I do :)
    * https://youtu.be/hB_qr4oW8j0?t=116 This bolt-and-nut step. It would be extremely useful if the manufacturer cut these holes out cleanly. Way too much time was spent trying to put these in. Then I tried cleaning the holes out properly before my bolts would fit. It turns out that poking a screwdriver through these 'half-holes' made them full holes. This was another silly roadblock to assembly that just shouldn't have been there.

    manual could be better
    * Page 22 of the manual warns not to open the lid more than 90 degrees. Well, the gas spring does this for you automatically, at least mine did. The lid only stays open at around 40-60ish degrees. Swing it too far from this 'middle range' of angles and it will either shut closed by itself (or open more than 90 degrees by itself). So the manual's warning about opening it more than 90 degrees is silly, since it does this all by itself by default. At least mine does. If you want the lid to stay open without closing or without opening all the way (beyond 90 degrees), then half-open the lid.
    * some of the illustrations could have been clearer, but over-all it was OK.
    * as already mentioned above, the quantity of ball studs is 2, not 4 (as mentioned on page 13)
    * odd sections of the manual where they denote 2-person assembly with the "2 people" icon.
    * safety glasses are needed to install this? Maybe only in a world of litigation.
    * "assembly should take 3 people about 30-60 minutes to complete." …so they say. This seems like incredibly odd language for "It'll take one person hours." If this was truly intended for 3 people, they don't make it clear which steps to delegate to which person without stuffing the whole procedure up. Chances are the others would be twiddling their thumbs and making wise-cracks at your assembly skills
    * Oddly, Step 2.9 in the manual has a "2 person" icon next to it. Presumably meaning you need 2 people for this one. Just odd. There were more difficult steps than putting the lid on.

    screws could be better
    * It would be useful if LIFETIME labelled the screws in their own screw packs. It isn't obvious which ones are which unless looking carefully. I made a mistake with Step 1.8 of the manual because of the company's lack of care in simply labelling screws in their own individual parts bags.

    quick impressions
    * despite the 'auto close' and 'auto-open' nature of the gas hinge (when opened at angles further away from 40-60-ish degree mid-point), this hinge adds a feeling of quality to the box. Plus it sounds awesome when closing :)
    * a little surprised it has no rubber feet or something like that to protect the base
    * price is worth it to me; she's a thing of beauty. I'd probably have reservations about paying full price for it though. At this price any failings are easily forgotten

    Thanks for sharing, rav_stk

    • Thanks for your superb effort. I haven't attempted mine yet.

      • +1

        I forgot one (annoying) detail.
One detail that I reckon took half an hour to 'fix'.

I heard something jiggling around in the lid as soon as I got my unit. Lid is hollow inside and has 2 walls and something is trapped in there. Was it a screw? What was in there? So I tilt the lid and you can hear it slide from one part of the lid to the other. It's inside there but what is it? The lid has 2 tiny slits in it (used to mount the metal bar later in assembly). I try looking through the slits as I tilt the huge lid carefully. I want to catch a glimpse of whatever is inside here. I try tilting for some time but it's very hard to see. Carefully titling, carefully tilting. Trying different angles. I move the lid back and forth and side-to-side, then I finally catch a glimpse of it.

How do I get it out?
        Vacuum? Nope…not enough suction.
        Sticky tape and stiff wire?
        Blu-Tack and stiff wire?

The high-tech final solution: blu-tack on a toothpick.
        http://imgur.com/1BKkUlI

        Finally it's out!
The lid isn't making any 'broken-piece-inside' noises when I move it now. Imagine opening and closing the lid and hearing something slide up and down inside there every time you do it. That's the reality I was faced with if I didn't take that this piece of plastic out from inside the lid, so that was the first thing I did before starting assembly.

These realities of real-world assembly are never shown in a manufactuer's YouTube videos :)

        • Well, you're helping me build my confidence. I mean to have a go in the next few days.

        • Well, you're helping me build my confidence.

          You should be fine.
Basically 2 videos to watch if the paper isn't making sense:
          https://youtu.be/-Wm8wcOdA4s (box)
          https://youtu.be/hB_qr4oW8j0 (lid)

Make note of the tools you'll need & you should be fine.
Step 1.6 might need sitting & hitting :)

    • +1

You are welcome :), i picked up my one yesterday night and assembled it today. The only time i had difficulty was sliding one of the side frames. It was bit bend so had to move the box and sit on the site to push it in. Other than that all went well. Only if i had a socket wrench would have been much easier to put the screws in.

      • The only time i had difficulty was sliding one of the side frames. It was bit bend so had to move the box and sit on the site to push it in.

Yeah, Step 1.6. Same, mine slightly bent too. I tried both sitting and hitting. I can imagine this getting a lot of people annoyed or returning the product. On the YouTube videos it's all flowers and sunshine :-) This step should come with a big Mallet logo next to it.

Only if i had a socket wrench would have been much easier to put the screws in.

Definitely. I was lucky enough to have a set; it does make it easier. But I had the 'challenge' of removing the loose plastic part from my lid, so maybe it evens out :)
