Seriously, these need to stop. It is just spam. I've reported to mods so many times. These are not bargains.
Hi clarky, what is the proper procedure to report deals to the mods?
I cant see a "report" link, Do you just start a TWAM? i ve never actually reported a deal before.
I agree that deals such as this are not a bargain and degrade the overall quality of the Ozbargain site.
Under the expiry date is a report button :) it's there for everyone
Haha thanks dude….ive been a member for like 12 months now and always thought this kind of referral deal was questionable…never realised there was a report button even though its hidden in plain site, ill make one now.
Thanks to both you and Clarky - it never would have happened without your posts
Sorry to say but the report won't do anything.
The sad part is that 1 of these days the mods & Scotty would be well within their rights to just say 'stuff this, no referrals for anyone', or just purely go to a random link instead.
So basically, the few who constantly post referral links (and have a rep of doing so), ruin it for the others that do it once every now and then.
@Spackbace: i just came up with a solution whereby only new members can post referrals for a period of , say, 6 months
That way, site content will keep flowing and the "few who constanly post referral links" as you put it will either find new content to present to the community or simply fade away at no real loss
Sorry, there is nothing wrong with this post. It contains NO referral links and breaks no guidelines. If you don't want to see easternculture (or any user) or Groupon (or any stores) posts, then do the following:
- Click Hide
- Check the box that says either
☑ Hide from store Store
☑ Hide from user usernameNo offense, but that's bull Neil.
I am sure it's 'technically' within the guidelines but has to be taken in context of the near daily spamming of these 10% deals. The referral link is the point. Most of the OPs posts directly instruct people on how to use his referral link.
See every Amaysim post ever.You and others might not like Groupon deals or specifically the X% off deal but people keep voting for them.
Last 5 % off Groupon deals:
- 10% off Local Deals @ Groupon 14 votes
- 10% off All Goods @ Groupon 18 votes
- Take an Extra 15% off Travel Deals @ Groupon 11 votes
- 15% off Sitewide @ Groupon 117 votes
- Groupon 10% off Sitewide e.g. Vivid Cruises from $17.10, $25 Dan Murphy GC with $0 Spacer Listing 19 votes
It may be a different story if the deals were getting no or little votes but these deals are clearly appreciated by a good amount of people.
If it's deal is good enough to get at least 5 votes, then the referral will show in a tiny box down the bottom. If it is not, no referral will show. If there is a referral in the description, they are subject to referral limits.
I think there is a bit of confusion about referrals and we will be making a post shortly explaining the guidelines, misconceptions, the basis, and perhaps you can all give feedback.
@neil:
We know all of this Neil and its not the point here.
How about making the system random referrals only? That would sort these spamtastic referral pushing posts out once and for all and be fairer all 'round. 11 or 14 positive votes are nothing given Groupon is a large company, EC is a prominent member and Ozbargain's user base is huge. Virtually just 'brand recognition'.
It's another 10% Groupon post every few days. I am saying it's about getting that referral link up as regularly as possible.
And people notice.How about making the system random referrals only? That would sort these spamtastic referral pushing posts out once and for all and be fairer all 'round.
Feel free to give your feedback in the upcoming thread or anywhere in the Site Discussion forum. Remember one mans spamtastic referral pushing is another mans bargain.
@neil:
OK, sure.@King Tightarse: impeding any given posters incentive to actually post a deal, regardless of reputation, is perhaps opposed to the mods perspective Of actually keeping the deals flowing, regardless of from whom the deal is actually posted by.
No deals = no new content = less traffic = less site value in $ terms
Maybe, instead of "random referrals only" we, as an egalitarian democratic community, could vote for a system whereby only new members can list referrals for , say, a period of 6 months.
This would keep the incentive to post new content while also keeping those discontented with referral credit farmers - who are mostly long term users of the ozbargain site - from getting involved in pointless comment and conversation.
@pointless comment:
Not bad - what about just a simple limit? IE Anyone can post anything but referrals only available to any OP for the same company once every (week/month/nominal time period). Would stop the "farming" every few days aspect.No deals = no new content = less traffic = less site value in $ terms
Moderation issues have nothing to do with making money on the site. The amount of time the moderation crew + staff have to deal with referral issues far outweighs anything we gain. Referrals in deals make up probably less than 5% of all deals posted here.
The question people should be asking themselves is why does having a small link in a box at the bottom of a deal bother people so much especially when the deal is voted positively on by members of the community?
The amount of time the moderation crew + staff have to deal with referral issues far outweighs anything we gain
Sorry, but that couldn't be true. I mean ozbargain is not a charity or NFPO
The question people should be asking themselves is why does having a small link in a box at the bottom of a deal bother people so much especially when the deal is voted positively on by members of the community?
I think the issue is that some people have a greater sense of right and wrong. The truth of the matter is that some people would upvote a cold lump of coal in the middle of winter. more scrupulous people know this, and are willing to take full advantage.
They simply dont like others being mislead or taken advantage of without all the facts being presented.
this is why some memebers feel the need to call others out for their supposed altrusim.
I think Karl Pilkington sums this up best, please take 60 seconds to check this link. Even if you dont agree with me, you will get a laugh
@neil: Hi Neil, where is the new forum referal thread? I can't see it
Not created yet. It was supposed to only explain a bit about third party sites marked as a referrer (e.g. Cashrewards, Fashionlane etc.) but figured I better start from the beginning as there are a incorrect assumptions and missing information/history mentioned in this thread.
@neil: Ok. Would be nice for people to have a solid input into the referral link issues concerning many of late. I for one think the system is broken and unfair, but let me express that in the dedicated forum post.
@clarky: seconded here. I mean look at OPs response below, which is afforded and even endorsed by the current system
very entertaining comments…..thanks to those who chose to use my referral link from this deal
And this is what the mods have to say on the issue
Sorry, there is nothing wrong with this post
I mean cmon - many people have voiced their opinion to the contrary
Just today i made a passing comment that a new poster with no referral links is a refreshing thing to see on this site - and it has been buried behind the "off-topic" bandaid, despite 30 odd upvotes and climbing.
Despite repeated requests for some transparency as to why, i am simpy being ignored by the mods
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239650
EDIT: as i was typing this, i just received notification that the comment in the link above has recieved the "popular comment" badge….what perfect timing LOL
@neil: hi Neil, following the logic you display above of votes being a good indicator of peoples acceptance on a given post, id like you to consider a post i made today; a passing comment on how glad i was to see a 'grass roots' deal post - all leg work with no referral credits or affliliations - which has recieved 30+ votes so far
The deal itself is well into triple figures.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239650
Does this not indicate that many are dissatisfied with current abusers of the referral system in place?
In relation, my post which recieved the 'Popular Comment' voted from my peers, has been buried under the "off-topic" banner, when it could not really be more on topic TBH.
Do you care to make a comment on that too?
Cheers - im looking forward to the new forum referral thread too - hopefully it will be a constructive excercise where all members can express their opinions without risk of censorship or bans
just to invalidate all your logic, this deal is on the front page. Which means ozbargainers appreciate these deals i post regardless of what you think
@easternculture: sorry but the logic is sound, have a great night buddy
@pointless comment: you too cuz
Looks like a good deal. I'm amazed anyone can find a deal at Dick Smith. Went to my local today and couldn't a single bargain. Lots of people buying 40% off items that were more expensive than competitors.
As for the comment, it's well written but seems like a thinly-veiled comment designed to continue your long going feud with a certain user? It seems pretty obvious that replying to you in this thread, other threads, 8 Talk with a Moderator Posts, and 2 Site Discussion posts is simply ignoring you so the only option left is for you to sit next to me. You'll get a chance to use our dart board where we throw a dart at the board and we randomly censor or ban users. Works great! Oops, probably shouldn't have revealed that. Too much transparency!
As mentioned above. I've written a very long explanation about referrals which I think will help for people to understand the topic but I also have to add the section above about 3rd party sites (and probably need to mention reps for context). Hopefully that will help people understand the topic better with all the information provided in one place.
thinly-veiled comment designed to continue your long going feud with a certain user
Not even sure to who you refer to here - many people don't seem to like me on this site. It was written as a heartfelt congratulations to a new user on his grass roots bargain. Regardless, you draw a very long bow and i am surprised you, as a fair and impartial mod, would jump to such a conclusion, let alone publish it.
The rest of that paragraph, makes little sense among the sea of sarcasm. Are you inviting me for a game of darts?? I dont get what you are saying at all, sorry.
While we all use it from time to time sarcasm is never a good look. Which is also disappointing coming from a senior mod of one of Australias most popular sites.
And can you give me a link to the very long explanation please? Thanks
Are you inviting me for a game of darts??
Yes, that was my roundabout way to invite you to play darts. Meet you at the pub in an hour?
@neil: out of what i wrote, you chose that to quote and sarcasticaly respond to? Really? Cmon man, you are better than that….maybe we should catch up for a game of darts at the pub and over a pint or two you can tell me waht you really think of some of the issues raised here…would be interesting to see if you can look me on the eye and stand by your convicitions
I see you took the mods hat off, which is admirable, so in the interest of tranparency, have a neg!
@neil: also whil ive got your attention as a "civilian", how the hell do you mods judge my comment in the logitech remote thread as off topic - its obviously not… Surely you should play by the same rules you sprout to everyon else yeh?
@pointless comment:
I upvoted your comment because most new member posts usually state "I'm new, please be gentle/kind" even though we can clearly see the L badge.
Camshandez kept it real and went straight to business. He/She actually beat me to it as I've seen it mentioned in other deals, and I went to Dick Smith today to confirm sufficent quantity.In terms of referrals, I just ignore the Groupon post as it is not giving me any issues.
@mmd: hey, thanks for your comment….+1 for keeping it real!
sorry but the logic is sound, have a great night buddy
more proof that your logic is NOT sound
another 2 front page Groupon deals in one day with double and triple digit votes
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239727
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239695@easternculture: i suggest you reread the comment to which you are referring - clearly you misunderstood
Be sure to +1 if you agree!
Indeed, whats your opinion, apart from finding the comments entertaining?
My opinion is you guys better off go and winge on whirlpool, your opinions might be heard there.
@easternculture: ok, do you have anything else to add to the conversation?.
That's it, have a nice day and thanks to those who chose to use my referral link from this deal
@easternculture:
"thanks to those who chose to use my referral link"
Ta-da…and there ladies and gentlemen, we have the real truth revealed!
How is it spam if he's posting a coupon that could genuinely help people? There are much worse things being repeated over and over again than coupon codes that you could spend on whatever you like.
Because half of OzBargain knows the OP only posts referral deals to make money out of Ozbargain. You think it's some kind of genuine kindness of the heart sharing a deal? Lol
I don't get it, what am I missing here? I don't see any referral links except the OzB built in one. It's a coupon code that I personally wouldn't have seen elsewhere to know about it. And he's listed an example deal in line with the rules of this site. Where is the problem?
Once five people click positive, it will reveal.
OK now I get it, but it's your own choice if you click his referral link or a random one or don't use one at all.. So this code could be helpful to somebody who is making a purchase at Groupon and Googles for valid coupons. I don't see it as spam but each to their own I guess.
@AngryAlfred: just make it random and it fixes everything. 100% the deal will still be posted.
@clarky: yep , both i and KTA alluded to that point above. Someone will still post it if referrals are random or capped or even limited to new users.
OP switched attention to mediocre and unremarkable Groupon deals as his usual Amaysim Ozbargain revenue stream stopped. (Amaysim referral system halted). Main motivation is to get people using the referral link. He gets $10 in Groupon referral credit per person that buys. Ozbargain has massive reach these days, it adds up big time.
Would post 1% off. It's all about getting the referrals out there for people to click.
Free money. Good motivation.You forget Ozbargain also benefits from Groupon posts,generating about 10% commision per sale(from non-login users),so that it will lean towards EC's behavior.
Actually,anyone can put this kind of promotion before EC if he is really onto Groupon deals.If you are not happy about him,just do not upvote as I do not see much wrong on his side.
what a cringe inducing voucher.
a brief reminder the term was "popular" 4 years ago and even then was limited to douche bags and irresponsible people. before the end of 2012 it was already a laughable forgotten phrase, not used genuinely by anyone. then 3 years ago in 2013 it no longer became even ironic to use the phrase. it wasn't worthy of use by any stretch.
Now, 4 years later some HQ's are catching onto the phrase "yolo" that's cool for young people right? when in reality they're half a decade behind and even then literally most people hated the phrase to begin with.
It's like the YOLO fruit juice it's just embarrassing.
Shame on this bargain posting.I have got no problem with these posts. It saves me from continually having to check when there might be a coupon on Groupon. EC contributes a lot to Ozbargain IMO.
How does the audible one work?
