good for gaming?
Yes but it also helps if you have a good gpu and cpu.
So if I wanted to make something when the new graphics cards come out is it wise to snag this deal now?
Depends how far away you plan on doing your build.
Ram is always coming down in priceThats true, but I guess my real question is is this ram at this size and speed for this price such a good deal that I should just get it now or wait till midway through the year and hope I find something as good if not better?
That is not always true. Most PC components actually go up in price over time as they become harder to source and people want them for older systems.
how is DDR4 going to become harder to source? the reason it's coming down is because it's being mass manufactured
In about 4-5 years though when it's well out of the mainstream it will probably go back up. Try searching for cheap DDR2 these days.
@GregRust: the guys talking about buying now or waiting until mid year
not 5 years time
That's nice. My point remains.
@Makoto: I was responding to the comment 'Ram is always coming down in price'.
Not directly related to this deal, but wondering if any RAM experts can help me.
I'm looking to increase from 8GB to 16GB on my Inspiron 7559.
The Dell manual online says: Two SODIMM slots, Type Dual-channel DDR3L, Speed 1600 MHz
The existing 8GB stick is Samsung.
So should I match it with an identical Samsung stick which must be DDR3L (not DDR3) and same speed SODIMM? Is there anything else I need to make sure of? (12800, pin types etc)how much ram are you using right now when doing things on your pc?
more than 8GB. Running VMs etc.
if you're running VMs have a look at a HP Microserver, they are excellent for that purpose and you can pick them up for like 200-300 bucks
@Makoto: No I'm happy with the laptop, just need some more RAM to prevent it paging so much
Not sure why your comment was down voted, anyway while its not related to this thread you need to get the same Spec Ram as you currently have however it doesnt have to be a samsung stick. Yes its better to get identical stick if you are worried about timings etc but honestly the difference is going to be minor. You can always get a higher frequency stick (eg 1866) but it will operate at 1600 to stay in sync with the other stick and presumably thats what you mobo supports anyway.
Typically, to avoid gremlins, I'd always recommend buying RAM in pairs. It's not really that expensive to get a pair of compatible SODIMMs.
Prefer buying Crucial for their reliability.
