Good machine. Only complaint is that space for only 1 drive.
There is a M2 slot but taken up by the wireless modem, from
    what I can tell.

  • this just makes in harder to decide between this and the XPS13 !!

    • +2

      XPS13 has thunderbolt

    • Just returned an XPS13 due to the terrible trackpad. If you use the trackpad a lot something to be aware of.

      • Apparently the trackpad issues were fixed in the 2016 model. Did you get the 2015 or 2016 model?

        • 2016 latest model. It still sucked.

        • +1

@nexus4: thanks for replying. But ah damn,I really wanted the xps

    • Just returned XPS 13 due to dead on arrival. Process took 6 weeks.

      • Mine one took me 3 weeks, they kept saying me to go and pickup it at the business hub which it clearly don't accept parcel. Just cancelled it. thinking about what ultrabook i can get atm. Any Suggestion?

    • +3

It's an ultrabook, so there are compromises when designing laptops in that form factor.
Ultrabook's don't tend to have optical drives, and they tend to use low-power CPU's that would be underpowered for demanding RAM-hungry tasks.

The truth be told… Apple has led the way with killing Optical drives in its laptops, and soldering ram onto the motherboard… whilst maintaining their high prices. So other manufacturers are starting to do the once unthinkable as well.

    • +9

      no optical drive

What year is this..? If you need one go buy an external drive.
Are you going to complain about no floppy disk drive as well?

      ram restrictions

One is soldered, one is not. You can upgrade it very easily to 12GB total.

      • +4

+1 - I've not had an optical drive in any of my machines for 5+ years. Why on earth would you need one?

        • -4

For what blurays were invented for? Storing data? Watching movies? I like to own physical copies of my movies. It's funny how you guys attack a bloke for a difference of opinion. I can accept people don't want or need am optical drive. I however will be sticking with and supportive of physical media.

        • @Ronnie23:
          https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&…

Buy one of those for DVDs/CDs. Alternately, if you're such a big physical media aficionado, get one of these:
          https://www.pccasegear.com/products/27545/samsung-slim-exter…

In my personal experience, most people wouldn't be watching Blu-rays on their tiny ultra book… they'd be playing them on their HDTVs via a standalone Bluray player (or a console).

In terms of storing data, external drives and NAS solutions are cheaper than they've ever been, so going with optical media for storage seems to be a stupendous waste of time and money.

    • +3

If anything you're crippling an ultrabook by cramming an optical drive in there… if you still need an optical drive you're doing it wrong.
Buy an external if you must.

        • +7

yes, but I think excluding them from being in built in is the best compromise, as it is less than the majority who need them and it costs money/weight/thickness to have them in built. It's affordable to buy an external drive and you should only need it occasionally

    • +2

By having an optical disk drive, it would make the laptops even thicker which contradicts the ultrabook design philosophy.

These days, optical disks aren't as important as before due to affordability of USB flash drives and internet plans. If required, you could always get an external optical disk drive.

This is an Iltrabook - ultrabooks are actually a design spec set by Intel. 15W TDP, 23mm max height for 14"+, 20mm for 13.3" smaller, 9 Hrs Windows idle battery, 80MB/s minimum storage speed and a number of other requirements.

      • This is an Iltrabook

Did you just make that up?

        • No, I simply can't type properly.

Or are you meaning my entire statement? No - it's from the design spec from Intel and can be found in a myriad of places including Wikipedia.

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultrabook

  • What is the estimated delivery date?

    • Not sure, but from my experience, Futu Online is quick at dispatching.

  • Comparing this one with XPS13. Please help …

      • +1

The XPS is tiny. Although the UX303UB is small the XPS13 makes it look gargantuan. :P

      • But thunderbolt, tho.

        • +2

          but dedicated graphic card tho

  • +4

I think this was $1799 the other day before the sale. Providing my memory is correct Futu should be commended for making it cheaper during an ebay sale, pretty much the opposite of what a lot of other retailers do.
Although to be perfectly honest I'd prefer the UX303UA. :P

    • +1

      Why UX303UA? Genuine question, the UX303UB just has the i7 + 940M.
      Wouldn't that be beneficial?
It's the same shell with better specs.

      • Better specs = less battery life. I'm not really interested in the dedicated graphics. Plus it's cheaper. :P

        • +1

          Haha, fair enough :)

  • Awesome. Glad I didn't buy this last night :) Saved over $100.

  • Anyone able to tell me if you are able to buy two of these once you click through the "Commit to Buy" button?

    • I didn't see the option to change the quantity, maybe email the store?

    • Add 1 to your cart, and than update the quantity needed when you view your cart.
Enter the promo code (make sure it's showing the discount) before making the commitment to purchase.

  • Does the invoice come with gst can be used for TRS? Thanks

    • +1

The invoice for my previous purchase includes GST and ABN.

    • I still prefer 303UA - lighter, doesn't have dedicated graphics (longer battery time) and no touchscreen which I hate. But this is definitely good price for UB model.

      • Yeah, I'm with you. I really don't want a touch screen laptop and don't need dedicated gfx either! Longer battery? Yes please!

        • 303UA has a touch screen too :)

        • @cwongtech:

          Oh Nooooo…!

          Oh no indeed :(

      • +2

To be fair I'm pretty sure the UX303UB support NVidia Optimus which means most of the general work will be done on the onboard intel GPU and only more intensive tasks passed off to the 940m.

This OR Surface book . What a dilemma…

    • This is more akin to a windows MacBook air.
The Surface Book has a pen.
Just ask yourself - do you EVER use a pen, or will it be a novelty attachment for you?
P.S. I got this (older Broadwell version) to replace my Surface Pro 2. Not that the SP2 wasn't powerful enough, I just didn't ever use the pen and the screen was a bit small for my liking.

      • I will actually use the pen quite a bit… I have client sign docs. However, it is not a MUST. As I can always print and then sign physical paper.

        • Why can't you use a stylus with this touch screen?

        • @juzz0:

Will be just as sensitive? Any recommendations?

    • Since the equivalent Surface Book costs over $3000.. not a hard choice for me.

  • +1

I have this very laptop and I can definitely recommend it.

    • I've been reading some reviews on notebookcheck and they all mention a constant electronic noise which gets louder when transferring files etc.
Are you able to comment on whether yours has this issue?

      • +1

        Definitely hasn't happened to me

        • Thanks.

  • Is Thunderbolt really worth it? I wanted to buy this until I read about thunderbolt and now I'm tossing up between the XPS 13 and UX303UB. I plan on using the laptop for at least 3 years.

    • i had a mini display port on my previous laptop for 4 years and never got the chance to use it, if you are just a commoner, jut get over the thunderbolt

    • I am as torn between the two as you're. With a quick YouTube search I came across this review (though the XPS 13 reviewed in the video has Intel 540 graphics, compared to the 520 in the deal):

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdQtpGyHcqs

I still don't know which one to choose. FML!

    • Kinda… people are speculating the potential for Thunderbolt, as Intel has acknowledged it being used for external dGPU, that have been a niche market. It's starting to entering the mainstream with the Razer Core, look it up! But in general, probably not atm, mostly just really fast external storage.

  • I have a 2010 Asus n61jq still going strong only needed a SSD hdd

  • Newb question as I'm in the market for a new laptop and this is around the price I was looking at. I don't do much more than use it for surfer the web and word processing. I'm after something reliable and quiet and something who's specs will hold up over a long time.

I've got no idea what the difference is between an Ultrabook and a Laptop. Im not interested in something thats like a tablet, I want a nice laptop with a good screen, can this Ultrabook give me that?

Fast & reliable is what I'm after. I currently have a HP Pavilion DV6, 15.6 inch that I've had for 5 years and its still going ok except the sound always plays up and crackles and you cant take it off the charge at all, power brick is fried or something…

    • Ditto hope you get some good replies

    • +1

      Hey VLine90,

Buying a new laptop is very daunting, and it seems you're more a typical user, just streaming and word processing nothing heavy. 'Ultrabooks' are a marketing term for portable, light laptops that use low powered processors for 'all day' battery power.

This one has a 940M to beef up it's graphical credential but it's a low-mid level graphics card, better than some of the integrated graphics. Ignore dedicated graphics card for the most part, as you said you only do websurfing and word processing, an integrated graphics card will do you, so if you don't have one you tend to have better battery life.

As for 'good screen' this isn't just resolution, although it is for the most part, as it makes images sharp and crisp. I'm not sure for you what constitutes a 'good screen', but they tend to be based on screen brightness, viewing angle and colour accuracy in addition to screen resolution. The Dell XPS 13 would fit the bill in terms of good screen size and is more portable than the ASUS UX303UB.

BUTTTTTT with that said better price for performance can be had elsewhere, but the Dell XPS 13 and Zenbooks tend to be pretty high end of consumer laptops bar Macbooks. If price/performance is needed, maybe consider a Chromebook that pops up from time to time or other laptops that are floating around on OzBargain deals, they're everywhere atm

But good criterias for you to look out for are:
      - 13-15.6"
      - i5 processor, preferably one of the "Skylake" CPU for future proofing/battery life, "m" processors are alright for your uses though. But Chromebooks tend to have low end CPUs
      - 1920X1080 screen resolution (or you can push towards a 1366X768 if you want a Chromebook)
      - No dedicated GPU, usually the word Intel gives it away.
      - 4GB bare minimum, 8GB recommended
      - SSD 128GB - you'll notice a difference in terms of general day to day work
      - 6-8 hours batttery life minimum - pretty standard these days

Since you're coming from the dv6 (I'm assuming the 1242tx? that heavy brick's charger just died on me) but the sound quality on that was rather good, I haven't heard good sound from many smaller laptop, but will be a significant upgrade whichever way you go!

      • +1

That's a pretty big butt. I like it and I cannot lie.

      • Thanks heaps for going out of your way for such a detailed description of what I should look for! Guessing most deals on here will have specs that are easy to compare with your notes.
Now I had no idea what a SSD harddrive was but it it a case of them running much faster and If you want more HD space its better to store things on an external drive to help the performance of your laptop?

Had a gander at Chromebooks and they look a little cheap and powerless to me, I think I'll hunt for an Ultra or Laptop.

Only downer for me buying online is not knowing the feel and quality of the keypad but the trackpads are no issue as I use a mouse. Shame I wasn't on here for a few days as donnot's deal below seemed right in my wheelhouse, would you agree?

        • Now I had no idea what a SSD harddrive was but it it a case of them running much faster and If you want more HD space its better to store things on an external drive to help the performance of your laptop?

Yep, SSDs boot up a laptop typically within 5-10 seconds (if it's a good SSD), desktops in 2-5 seconds.
We're talking from "push the power button" to "Can use Chrome/Word", not "I can see the desktop" boot.

Only downer for me buying online is not knowing the feel and quality of the keypad but the trackpads are no issue as I use a mouse

There's these lovely showrooms called JBHifi :)

        • @cwongtech: I've been looking at the Dell XPS range and I thought Dell was only online, am I was off base with that?

        • @VLine90: JBHifi have the 15" XPS

          https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/dell/del…
I'd assume that the keyboard feel would be the same (minus the numpad)

    • +1

Something like this deal posted a while back (still active) is my recommendation and would suit your needs perfectly, for $500 less than this deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/232687?page=1#comment

i5 4200u (a couple of generations old, but aren't a very large downgrade from current i5's as far as performance and power consumption), 8Gb RAM, 128Gb SSD, and decent battery life, while weighing less than 1KG. With the SSD, it'll run significantly faster than your current DV6. Also has a very nice full-HD (1920x1080) display. For web surfing, watching videos, word processing and general tasks, it'll easily hold up for at least the next 5 years. The only real feature you're missing from this deal is the touchscreen.

      • Thanks heaps for this, shame I hadn't been on here in a few days as the deal has now expired, hopefully something like this will come up again. I kept looking at the Dell XPS 13 but that will cost me around $1600 are proably is to powerful for what I really use a CPU for. Now online is where I'll usually get the best price but one thing I can never check is the keyboard quality and how good it is to type on. The trackpad doesn't matter at all though as I use a mouse.

Again cheers for the suggestion as I'm not to knowledgeable in this area but see so many deals up here but I don't won't to but a dud!

        • Looks like you might be in luck. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238838

FHD, newer i5, far better battery life for a similar cost.

        • @donnot: Again tempting but looking at reviews this is meant to have a super load fan, which was easily the biggest annoyance I had with my DV6. Dad also had a Toshiba a few years back and has already had to replace it. Also not great words for its keypads

Would the Dell XPS 13 i5-6200U/8GB RAM/256GB SSD/1920x1024 for $1519 be worth splashing the extra cash on, they seem quite a bit ahead in terms of reviews and customer satisfaction…

        • @VLine90:

That's a great laptop, but up to you if it's worth the money. Another recommendation I would give is the Dell Inspiron 15 7000u https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238048

I know it might be a bit overkill for what you're using it for, but you seemed to want something with specs that will last a long time. It has a Quad core i5 (performance isn't that far off a full-blown desktop processor which will run circles around the 6200U in the XPS 13), and a 4GB GTX 960 (complete overkill since you're not planning on gaming), but the option is always there and this'll hold up well into the future, more so than the XPS 13. Also has a great cooling system which should keep it quiet unless you're really pushing it. Even with web browsing, you'll appreciate the better performance from the i5.

Only gripe is the lack of an SSD, which may slow down the overall system performance, but Windows 10 Fast boot does a great job of speeding up boot times on HDDs (<20 seconds).

If this is a portable system where you're going to be carrying it around everywhere, I'd choose the XPS 13 (or something of similar calibre), but if it's sitting on a desk as a home PC mainly, the 7000U would likely be a better choice in the long run.

        • @donnot: Thanks again, really wish I found these sales earlier as I'm so torn. I may be going back into study but I may not. The Inspiron looks super sturdy but really heavy. The XPS though I could only probably go as much as the one listed for $1519 and I'd also have to get an external as 256gb will not get me very far.

The Inspiron could also have a SSD put in it correct? If the 15' inch XPS was cheaper I would jump but the cheapest XPS 15' has only 32gb ssd. The 256 jumps to $2000….

Do these sales come here often? 20% seems large and something that wouldn't happen often

        • @VLine90:

20% sales don't come often, but that doesn't mean there are better deals outside those sales-there are always great deals on laptops.

This recently posted lenovo (almost 1/2 price) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239021 would also be worth considering. 1TB HDD, and a 16Gb SSD 'cache'. The cache combined with the HDD is a good combination, as the SSD cache would likely store a lot of the OS files and you've got 1tb on top of that. Also includes an active pen for taking any notes/drawings/diagrams etc, which could be handy for study- especially combined with the 14" screen.

        • @donnot:

Specs look really solid but I don't think I'd use the flip screen function at all. I think I need to get hands on with some laptops to really figure out what I wan't.

Actually was in the final processes of buying the Inspiron but pulled out at the last second, I'm horrid at decisions like this!

Cheers for all your help though mate!

        • @donnot: Dell also says it has a 14-day change of mind policy, almost tempted to get the Inspiron just on that…

        • @VLine90:

          Which inspiron is this?

        • @VLine90:

Well if the weight isn't a huge issue (~2.5Kg :/) that'd be my choice, as there's nothing else in that price range currently that can come close to touching it as far as performance. Also has very good battery life (~10 hours, the battery adds a fair bit to the overall weight). The 14 day change of mind policy is great-didn't even know they had that.

        • @VLine90:

Just thought I'd let you know that you can also quite easily add an m.2 SSD to run alongside the HDD (250Gb are around $130), and move the OS over to that to use it as a boot drive if you want something a bit more snappy.

        • @donnot:

Yep, was just chatting with a mate about that…Just bought! Cheers for all you help it's greatly appreciated by a tech novice like me. Thanks so much

        • @VLine90:

No worries! If you have any issues, feel free to shoot me a PM whenever.

If you do decide to go down the path of getting an m.2 SSD, my recommendation would be this.

Hope it all works out well!

  • anyone know if we'd get a GST invoice for TRS refund purposes ?

    • I received an invoice for my previous purchase, so yes you would.

  • Hey guys,

-How will this go with light gaming? Things like Civ 5 etc or even The Division (not so light haha)
-Is this a new condition laptop or referb?
    -IS this Australian stock?

    Thanks,

    • New, Australian Stock. Not sure about Civ V, but looking at benchmarks (YouTube), it'll probably struggle to push 30FPS on low settings for the division (that's with the resolution lowered to 1366x768 from the native 1920x1080 of the laptop).

  • Not sure whether to pull the trigger on this Zenbook or this LG ultrabook posted a few months ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/232687?page=1#comment

I'm moving overseas next month and am after a general use laptop.

    • +1

For a general use laptop, I'd save $500 by getting the LG, unless you need the touchscreen of this Zenbook. Not a huge performance difference between the two, and you certainly won't notice the difference in everyday usage unless you're doing graphical/processor heavy tasks. Battery is a little smaller (42.4Wh vs 50 of this one).

      • You make a great point. In regards to battery life, I don't think it'll travel too far away from home, as I don't see myself taking it anywhere. I reckon I'll buy the LG one before the end of the week!

        • Certainly won't be disappointed. The battery will still give a solid 4-5 hours of general use, and the screen is amazing.

  • -2

Costco currently has the UX303UB on sale for US$999

Even with the Costco joining fee, the total price is still US$150 cheaper than anywhere else.

And the Costco model comes with the QHD+ screen, a 512GB SSD and 12GB RAM.

The OS spec isn't clear, but the 512GB model usually comes with Windows 10 Home.

    • With currency exchange rate I don't think the Costco one is US$150 cheaper. Also, the Costco one has 2.5GHz processor whereas the one in the deal has 3.1GHz processor. Yes, it has bigger SSD and more RAM but don't forget you'll lose local warranty if you go with the US Costco one.
