  • Hey guys would the 31" be any good to use as a monitor for my pc at work?

    • thats what i planned and ordered one 31" cant go wrong for $200 if i use for 2 years thats it.

    • +3

      I'd probably say no.

      Specs:
      79cm (31") screen
      Ratio: 16:9
      Resolution: 1366 x 768
      3 x HDMI ports
      USB and Headphone connectivity

1366x768 resolution on a 31" would be awful to work off.

      • That size/res works well for me on my 32" LG tv/monitor.

    • You're better off with the 39" FHD

The pixel density is higher than the 31" HD.

      • how do i cancel the order and buy 39"

  • wonder who makes these

Some dodgy Chinese company pawning off their rubbish to unsuspecting Australians.

You want to know why Australian FTA tv isn't in HD and not brodcasting all their channels using MPEG-4? It's because of companies like these.

They get rid of all their junk products into markets like Australia. 5-6 years ago you could still buy a TV that only displayed MPEG-2, even though MPEG-4 had been around for a long time and all decent manufacturers (LG, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung) were including them in their TVs.

Because there are so many of these sets out there that can't play back MPEG-4, TV stations are hesitant to switch all their channels over to MPEG-4 as they would lose some viewers (to be honest, if a person can't afford a decent TV or a $30 STB, do you really want to advertise to them?)

You can choose not to buy, I wouldn't call the company "dodgy", they are not selling it for $2870. Do your research and then pull the trigger.

So are you seriously saying Australian FTA holds off MPEG-4 because of these companies?

And BTW, it's the Target distributing these "rubbish" to Australia and making the bigger profit here. Who's "dodgy" now.

I dunno… there's a reason they are cheaper. This article talking about worker exploitation is food for thought. Look up Hisense and Palsonic.

Target and Platinum are both dodgy. You're right though Target would be the dodgier company.

Yes, Australian FTA is holding off switching to MPEG-4 because there are too many people in Australia with outdated equipment. When Channel 9 went HD, there were thousands of people complaining they couldn't recieve the channel. These were people who had purchased new TVs in the last year. Let me guess, these people didn't buy Sony - they bought some cheap no-brand TV that were flooding the Australian market because some Chinese company had a few million units to offload for a bargain basement price.

That's why Channel 9 has an SD (MPEG-2) and a HD (MPEG-4) channel that broadcasts the exact same programmes. GEM (previously HD) was converted into as SD channel to cater for the duplication of 9/9HD.

          @jelko:

I am not familiar with this whole MPEG-4 issue, but I believe cheap TVs should not take sole responsibility here.

The way I see it is that if low income family can only afford $200ish for a TV, these cheap Chinese units actually provide an affordable access to some basic entertainment. Again at this price, we all know there is a compromise.

Back to the deal, at this price, it's a good deal. But will I buy it? No.

        • Being SD or HD is of no concern to most people… the quality of the programs is.
          It is mostly rubbish.

      • Can you name any 30+" TV sold in the Australian market in the last 2 years that doesn't support MPEG-4 ?

It's been commonplace for yonks even with the cheapos (they never specify MPEG-4, but it works). My sub-$300 40" cheapo I bought 3 years ago works fine with MPEG-4

  • Resolution: 1366 x 768

    Back to 2004 resolutions

    • Yeah the 31" and 18" and HD, The 39" is FHD :)

Tip: don't google "Platinum TV" at work.

  • I got the 55 inch a while back and it's pretty good for the price just doesn't play dts audio from usb.
The remote is pretty crap some times doesn't work
Picture quality is nice for the price
As for a computer screen I would say no

    • I was thinking of buying the 39" to use as a computer monitor. Can I ask why you think it is a bad idea?

      • Without knowing anything about these exact TV's the general concerns about using TV's as monitors (especially cheap ones)
        are:
        1) non sharp/crisp text - these tv are primarily designed for pictures so text display will generally be poor I would say especially if you get the 31" non FHD model.

        2) bad viewing angle/contrast brightness issues - sitting so close you may get inconsistent brightness or poor experiences with viewing angle.

It really depends what you want to use it for as a computer monitor - excel/word/text browsing I would say its worst case scenario - if mainly for viewing youtube or clear blocky text like a stock ticker (daytrader) then I think it can be ok

      • Yeah it's not the best screen up close
        From a distance it's fine
