    HP G8 G1610T Microserver RRP 913. lol

    Always upvote Microserver deals.

  • A few queries….

Are these powerful enough for transcoding on the fly? i.e. Plex?
    OK to install windows?
Can you expand the number of HDD ports if so how?

    • I've got the HP G1610T.

      • Plex seems to be able to transcode one 1080p stream reasonably well - not sure about high bitrates though. Pretty much uses about 90% CPU when transcoding.
      • Haven't installed Windows but theres nothing stopping you. I think Linux would be more suitable to the limited resources it has available.
      • It only has 4 HDD ports, but you can replace the optical power cable up the top with a SATA one and put an SSD in the drive bay. The problem is the BIOS doesn't let you boot from that drive, so you have to mess around with putting a bootloader on a USB key and make that load your main operating system. Alternatively you can look at using FreeNAS or one of the other distros that runs straight from USB.
      • Hmmm ok never used linux and can't be bothered messing with bootloaders etc.. sounds like too much stuffing around for me. Thanks.

        • You only have to use a bootloader with SD cards etc if you are using windows. Linux detects all 4 drive bays perfectly fine when you have RAID turned on. It's only Windows Server that won't let you use the drives. I have a Gen8 with an SSD in the ODD slot (running OpenMediaVault) and all 4 bays occupied and it works flawlessly.

        • @miicah:

My Gen8 boots from an SSD in the ODD port, don't remember ever flashing a bios or anything to enable it..?

      • "The problem is the BIOS doesn't let you boot from that drive" - Yes it does! I'm doing it now!

        • Ah right. It's because I have the other 4 drives in AHCI mode rather than RAID. I'd edit it into my original comment but unfortunately it's been too long.

    • Yep, they can transcode 1080p fine

    • I am running w10 pro on my G1610T, For some reason I had all sorts of trouble doing the install but got there in the end.

I also installed the SSD in place of the optical drive leaving 4 free bays for my storage.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-ProLiant-ML10v2-Server-NAS-G32…

The ML10 is available at the same price but with free shipping on eBay.

    • Does the ML10 use much more power?

  • Any deals on ML10 v2 compatible RAM? Thanks.

  • ergh, i want one so bad….. but can't afford it right now.

    another time. :)

just a fyi, these were 289 at PCLAN not so long ago and on their ebay site with free shipping.

I like the look of the ML10 v2 but would be interested in a processor that can do direct io/VT-d.

Be interested to know rig setup and power consumption and cost of a processor that can do this.

  • I like the form factor of the gen8 microserver, however the limitations of the processor is of concern for plex.

Unfortunately LGA1155 isn’t really used anymore, so the only upgrade I can reliably look at is to a $300 xeon cpu which is a bit overkill… which makes it less cost effective than a little ITX or mATX build. The 3xxx i3/i5s aren’t available anymore.

    Anyone upgraded their 1610T?

I purchased a second hand i3-3220T for my MicroServer last week for $80, going to chuck it in tonight and test it out.

      • i3-3220T doesn't support ECC RAM though.

        • Seems they "used to" support ECC but intel changed their website at some point to say it's not supported.

But then some people get results suggesting the ivy bridge i3s still support ECC.

At any rate it seems the cpu will work, but he may or may not have the ECC function…

        • +1

It seems to be working fine with my RAM so far, is there any way to tell if the ECC feature is functioning correctly?

There's a script that you can run to check, but as mentioned in the thread and what iforgotmysocks said above the result isn't conclusive. The only way to know for sure is to use a faulty RAM.

    • any 2nd hand CPUs that would be suitable for both the microserver/ML10?

  • +1

Why are they dropping in price? Are we FINALLY seeing G9 / G10 micro's on the supplier list? It's been a heck of a long time.
There's a new CPU coming later this year which would very much suit a Microserver.

  • Set the odd port as single raid and you can set it to boot windows from it. I'm currently running windows 10 pro.
Plex seems to work fine so far with what all I've thrown at it. I've got 8gb ram though.

  • Whats HP power usage compared to other NAS?

  • For those who are after RAM see the link below, which works out to be ~A$166 delivered for 16GB

  • Can any of these options handle Plex, Sickbeard, CouchPotato and SABnzbd? I gifted my NAS, a Synology DS413 that couldn't handle transcoding. So I told myself that I'd steer clear of low powered NAS options in the future. Would you recommend one of these?

    • They all can
