Key Features

The Seagate Expansion desktop drive provides extra storage for your ever-growing collection of files.

Add space for more files instantly, consolidate all your files to a single location, or free space on your computer’s internal drive for improved performance.

Set-up is straightforward. Simply plug in the included power supply and USB cable and you are ready to go. It is automatically recognised by the Windows® operating system, so there is no software to install and nothing to configure. Saving files is easy too, just drag and drop.

Take advantage of the fast data transfer speeds with the USB 3.0 interface by connecting to a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port. USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 for additional system compatibility.

Sorry Trent, just spotted the tag in your post. Still, I think it deserves it's own post :)

Really, is this yet another throw away comment that is not based on facts because I haven't seen any price increases that are unusual since the 10% off promotion started.

$139.50 DELIVERED for an external 3TB Western Digital and there are plenty more for the same price.

    • It is a throw-away comment yes, I didn't think anyone would feel personally violated by it.

But for the sake of openness, I looked again and my eBay search wasn't the best before.
Shopping Express comes to $139.50 delivered for a WD 3TB external.

So just depends on whether you want it today or in a week :)

Many people already know this, but the Seagate 3TB drives are known to have high failure rates. Have a look here.

Many people already know this, but the Seagate 3TB drives are known to have high failure rates. Have a look here(lifehacker.com.au).

That's a different hard drive. Shesh move on, the 3TB failures were a batch of drives from years ago.

It's not a different hard drive - the only difference is this one comes with the enclosure. Yes, you may be right about the failures stemming from a batch years ago, but that's no guarantee this isn't older stock either. The model with the high failure rates (model number ST3000DM001) is still being produced and is still used in the desktop HDs.

Friends don't let friends buy Seagate 3TB drives.

Yes it's still being produced, because it is a good drive.

It outsells any other 3tb drive in the market because it is 7200rpm and contrary to the article and the BS you expouse, it's a reliable drive.

Yes it had problems a few years ago, but adjustments were made, particularly to the firmware, and it's now a dependable drive - or at least as dependable as your average drive.

Yup, ST3000DM001 is the bad one. Had 7 out of 6 replaced under warranty, last year. That's right, even had to get a replacement replaced within the warranty period… Take from that what you will, but I've learned my lesson.

          @GreatWhiteHunter:

Bad batch my foot. Badly designed drive with perhaps a bad PCB design. ST3000DM002 appears to be the redesigned drive. Buying ST3000DM001 is asking for a headache. I can't find reliability data on ST3000DM002 so have no idea if it is better or by how much.
