For those planning to go to SCA for buckets, head over to bunnings instead as they have it cheaper and higher quality.
Credit goes to team teri and dontpanic for their comments in the SCA deal, I would've never found the price drop otherwise.

SCA buckets are made of a very brittle plastic, the holder of the handle breaks off easily. The $0.95 Bunnings variety is slightly better quality.

We used several buckets to measure out ingredients for concrete (sand, bluemetal, cement).
None of the SCA ones survived the first day intact. Bunnings ones were still ok after day 2 when we finished that job.

        I can assure you that nobody cares about any of that rubbish after the first couple of litres of booze.

        It's been scientifically proven that the water that is consumed after parties (to stave off the resultant hangovers) contains harmful minerals, toxins and bacteria. Long term consumption of water is proven to cause injury, sickness and death!

        This is easily proven: name one person who has consumed water and has never fallen victim to an injury, been sick or died. If you can do so, then don't be too smug… water will kill them sooner or later.

      Everything is made out of polypropylene, especially food containers. You think that it will be usable in foods if it wasn't safe? (or at least the plastic of choice for food-related items)

      All plastics are toxic to a certain degree, but polypropylene is definitely safe. (Any google search for 'polypropylene safety' or 'safest plastics' has polypropylene as one of the safest plastics there is in 9/10 articles)

      Cheers for linking to a 2008 article that doesn't even provide any research/evidence.
      And also whats the point of worrying about the toxicity of a bucket?

      Polypropylene is approved for food and dairy by the US FDA. Given that the study is eight years old, wouldn't there have been ample time for follow-up studies?

      By the way, to determine which of the common plastic containers are made of Number 5 Plastics PP (polypropylene), just look for the recycle 5 number on the bottom. In my home I found that only the sturdy protein drink shakers or microwave safe plastic containers had this number on them. But the Avent baby bottles had no recycle number (due to contact with body fluids) but were also marked PP (which means polypropylene).

      I'd be more worried about the pigments than the PP. If it's a bucket from an auto shop, then it's possibly not intended for food and might contain an inorganic pigment. From my survey of the PP in my home, I found that most food PP is fairly clear and not coloured.           Nobody cares, polypropylene is not a toxic material. Many food containers are made from it, and it's even used in medical products (eg: pelvic organ prolapse repair operations).

          Its obvious from high school chrmistry that polypropylene is one of the widely used and safe plastics in the industry.

      If it has a recycle code 5 on it it's food safe.

      In fact there's a lot of rubbish spread about plastic. Most of it is non-toxic and food safe. All bar two of the 7 recycle codes in fact are food safe plastic ie. non-toxic, safe to store food in.

    I got a dozen yesterday! I think the prica tag said clearance as it was ever colour that was left. Before you ask I use them for gardening a bucket of herbs here and a bucket of herbs there! even at 95c they were cheap.

    I had a horrible experience returning one of these to Bunnings after I found a hole in it, spoke to a lady named Liza.

    I told her that there's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza etc and all she wanted to do was 'fix it' with straw (!!) and insisted on calling me 'Henry'?!

    I think an axe and stone was mentioned at some point as well…just crazy.

        I thought about it, but I didnt want the embarrassment of saying no coz I'm not getting a 45c discount, plus I didn't really need the bucket. Just a good thing to have around.
