add $100 for 192gb SSD hdd. Anyone know what brand ssd. Or would it be worth getting the normal HDD and buy an EVO 850 and do the work urself.

    • +4

Buy a bigger ssd, worth the money. I bought this last year and swapped for a 512gb Samsung. Best laptop I've had.

    • +5

This is the drive - http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/products/flash-storage/… (from reading reviews on it).

It's a budget, entry level Samsung drive. Much slower write speeds than the EVO 850 (850 has 520mb write vs 110mb and 10k IOPS write vs 7k for the cheaper drive). So I'd go the EVO 850 if you have no problems with the install process.

Great laptop price though, Lenovo put a ridiculously good screen in this for an entry level business machine. Now to convince work I need one!

    • +3

Just powered one up. The SSD is a Samsung CM871 2.5" 7mm. Hence 510MB/s read 180MB/s write.

So I'd say leave the config with 1tb (pull it out for ur portable backup) and buy a Samsung Evo 850 250gb or larger.

    • I bought this the other day with only 8gb ram as I did not want to pay $250 for the extra 8gb. If I want to buy the 8gb ram part does anyone know the Lenovo part number that I would need. I contacted Lenovo and they were not to helpful.

  • +17

I would definitely recommend to take the better WiFi adapter

  • +7

Might this be a further %15 off in 2 days time?

    • +1

WHats the odds they jack up the price by then?

    • +2

This deal ends tomorrow midnight (spoke with Lenovo re this earlier in the week). However, it is good to know a 15% deal is coming.

  • wow those are some killer specs

  • it is going to end on Thursday?
    also with 3.64% with cashrewards.

Use coupon Code DECWELC2015 to get it down to $899.10 Save extra $9 :)

  • +3

Nice specs and price but the CPU is actually dual core with hyper threading and not like a 4 core hyper-threaded CPU. Not sure why Intel is naming them so differently instead of grouping them. My HP laptop has an i7 5500u and it runs pretty cool and fast but cant run too many high cpu loading tasks (also dual core with 4 threads).

    • +2

Why are you latching onto to arbitary numbers of cores and explaining how this laptop does not contain a certain cpu?

The reason Intel uses their naming conventions is to confuse the naive customer into believing they are getting a powerful computer system regardless of whether it is or not.

    • Things get really confusing with the i5 6300HQ, which is the first mobile quad core i5 (but only 4 threads). Going by Intel's model numbering you'd expect it to be slower than the i7 6500U, but it benchmarks higher overall.

    • This. But it's so hard to find good deals on quad core i7s. Been looking for ages.
What's really disappointing is that my 5 year old Dell laptop which I got for $800 is faster than this one.

  • +5

M360 GPU is pretty low-rent. Not much faster than the integrated.

    • Presumably this means that if you overwork work the graphics, your CPU wont struggle?

I have a UHD monitor external (which combined with the original screen is 2x 2560x1440) on my X1 Carbon (i7-4600U with integrated graphics) and it slows down quite a bit when displaying a moderately busy webpage. Considering getting something a little heavier but with dedicated graphics to avoid this problem.

      • That does not sound like a problem that is caused by having an under powered video card since the integrated gpu should have zero problems with any 2D rendering task.

        • Even powering two 2560x1440 screens? Seems to function well when I'm on the road with no external screen.

        • @ChickenTalon:

Do you run the UHD monitor at 1440p or 2160p?

        • @mrdavedave: 1440p. realised i used the wrong term "UHD" I should say WQHD

    • Was hoping to use this for gaming. But seems you're right

"…That is, unfortunately, not even enough for Fallout 4 or Assassin's Creed: Syndicate; we only measured a low 21.4 and 12.0 FPS even in minimum settings."

Yeh dont forget to do cash rewards so that lenovo can never pay up… still waiting 8 months and counting

    • +1

I finally got mine after 7months. There is hope! This is after raising with CR about the wrong amount. CR responded and did say it will take time due to lenovo but good to know CR does follow up

  • +3

Would anyone here happen to know what the battery life on this machine is? And whether the battery life can be extended (e.g. battery replacement, adjusting graphics card settings etc).

  • For basic browsing/office use how would this actually differ to that $699 Dell thats been on sale here a lot recently?

I remember the Dell has touchscreen (which I have no idea if I actually want), but otherwise not sure if the extra cash makes a real difference… Can't decide if I should grab this or wait for another sale!

    • +1

If it's for basic tasks as you stated above, the Dell will surpass those needs.

    • +1

For basic browsing, get the lightest laptop with a 1080p screen 14 inch or smaller screen and add an SSD. These are the three things that will make a perceptible difference.

      • Price might jacked after 15%.

  • I'd prefer to trrade down the cpu for a touch screen.

after having touch on my vaio it's just so much easier than using a mouse

    • -1

i agree and thats deal breaker for me

      • +2

Touch screens on laptops are so overrated and pointless. That's why Apple doesn't bother with them.

        • +1

I agree. Its a nice novelty that wears off quick. After a few weeks you wont even realise its there. Ur brain doesn't think to use touch screen under normal use.

        • +5

Touch screens on laptops are so overrated and pointless

          Agreed with this

That's why Apple doesn't bother with them

umm… NO, Apple is the biggest player in overrating some shit like siri, 3D touch, Retina display, touch ID, AppplePay, iPencil and so many more f**ng sh*ts. Wait until few year and see how crazy apple sheep will react towards touch screen laptops once apple introduce them.

        • @Oz Bargain 3:

          lol

I might become one of those sheepies if the new macbook pro has a fat battery. I usually go for laptops with the biggest battery capacity.

        • @cDNA: Lol, then keep dreaming. In apple world just like Disney making skinny little waist and big eyes princes, will make the Macbook pro shinner, thinner and more pinkish and give them a sh*tty name Rose Gold Light to attract more hipsters, you know how it works.

        • Love touch screens myself… I agree that I don't use it often but having the option is fantastic… Specially useful when u want to zoom in or out.

Apple don't do it because they haven't designed their OS around touch screen…and they might not do that for a while as that will directly impact the already falling sales of iPads

Would be a good buy if it doesn't comes with malware pre-installed, until then I wouldn't go near this brand. Lenovo used shady 'rootkit' tactic to quietly reinstall unwanted software.

    • In a July 31 security bulletin, the company warned the engine could be exploited by hackers to install malware. The company issued a security update that removed the engine's functionality, but users must install the patch manually.

Many Yoga and Flex machines (among others) running Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 are affected by the issue. Business machines, such as Think-branded PCs, are not affected.

Shady maker, bye bye. Thanks for the warning. My data is more important than a bargain

      • Dell had a similar scandal.I'm sure other companies just haven't been caught out yet

        • Well Dell is on my blacklist too and likely to be true for the industry but those exposed deserve a bit more the other and I give benefits of the doubt for now.

  • +2

The battery capacity is crappy. Don't expect more than 6 hours.

  • My E530 has overheat issue. I happened a few months after warranty. So I get blue screen from time to time. Even in winter. Not sure if the E460 will be better.

  • +1

Some of their 'Build Your Own' options are ridiculous - $250 for an extra 8GB RAM stick? Tell him he's dreamin'!

  • +10

All this up voting is making me want to buy a laptop I don't need!

    • +1

Goddamn it! I caved in and bought one. Now I gotta figure out what to do with my old redundant computers.

  • Please be wary when purchasing Lenovo.

They've known to install compromised net browsers
    http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/02/lenovo-pcs-ship-with…

And permanently install crapware onto laptops. (this means a format wont help you)
    http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/08/lenovo…

This is how they are able to sell you cheap laptops.

  • My boss has used E531 for nearly 3 years and never got any problems. The only thing you guys may need to care about is its mobility as it is not that light and the 'things' inside the laptop is not as robust as lenovo's T series. So if you are looking for a laptop to use at home at most of your time, this one is very good.

  • Windows 10 has free language packs btw

  • It comes up as $999 for me when I select Win10

    • Deal has expired and new 15% off Australia day sale is on which does not appear as good.

  • +5

With the coupon DECWELC2015, you can still bring down the price to $899.10.

    Shipping: FREE
    [DECWELC2015]-$99.90

If I'm not completely mistaken this deal is now $809.10 with DECWELC2015 making it a killer deal….

      Edit: this includes the sleeve

      • +2

This deal is not expired I just ordered one, it maybe as low as $780 with 3.64% from Cashrewards.

    • -1

No deal these days is all that great with our weak Aussie dollar. A few years ago a laptop with date-adjusted comparable specs would be $599.

  • +3

Please bear in mind that Lenovo have ceased contracting IBM (based in Malaysia) for support on Thinkpads and support is due to end in the next few months. This is NOT common knowledge. It is uncertain who the new provider is going to be. IF it's going back to Lenovo (previously US based) then it will be awful again.

  • What is " Recovery Media - Windows 10 Pro 64 Recovery Media Coupon" and how do you install and authenticate your Windows installation if you swap HDDs. - Thanks

  • Is this any good for video editing if RAM is increased to 32GB?
    Mainly premiere pro.

    • the gpu would matter more but this gpu in this laptop is a low end

      • Yes and no, it depends on the type of effects and if applied.
        It is more the processor.

    • +2

I am not sure taking the RAM beyond 16GB will be helpful, you will probably be limited by the CPU or GPU before you use that much RAM.

It's a decent system for video editing, certainly, at price point or a bit higher you can't do better.

But for serious video editing, you really need a desktop. A desktop with a mid range desktop graphics card, quad core CPU, and a decent external monitor, all for under $1000 will be much faster and a much better machine for video editing.

Anyone is aware of malicious software reinstalled in Lenovo's bios which no way can be removed. Your details will then be sent back to their server in China.

  • Is it worth paying an extra $17 and getting the "Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260, 2x2, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo adapter"?

    • +4

      Yes.

    • +1

Totally, it makes a big diff to wireless speeds. 1x1 is basically gimped.

    • Definitely. Should improve speed and range.

  • +1

What a bargain! Potentially around $780 with cashrewards.

  • No deal on the x250?

  • This $810 laptop or $646 for same laptop but with i5 6200, 1366x768 screen, 4GB ram (can add another 4GB from existing laptop)? mainly the screen that's the biggest difference

    • I'd go the $810 version.

The upgraded screen is 1080p IPS, the cheaper one is a low-res TN with narrow viewing angles. Big difference.
Then there's the graphics chip, extra ram and core i7.

  • Was just wondering where I'm able to locate the reversible sleeve offer?

    • After adding it to your cart, click continue until you reach 'Accessories'. Then open the tab 'Sleeves' and it's the only option there.

  • Think I'd rather get a Dell Latitude refurb, better build quality.

    • After seeing a HP Elitebook recently it's hard to buy these plastic laptops. Build quality for the Elitebook was amazing. Latitude may be similar?

      • +1

Yeah the Elitebook is a nice machine.
Hard to compare to an $800 laptop though.

  • Weird…I got $899.10. Did they jack up the price?

    • I get the same :/
      can someone please help?

  • Yep. Price increased. Was looking 3 hours and about to buy, but waited. Now price jacked up.

  • I may have just bought the last one at smack on 8:00pm AEST. Same build is now $90 more. Mother-in-law gets it but was going to get another for my mum but it is now $100 more. Hell I was drooling over these specs myself.

Still, I remember when I bought my Vaio-Z 5-6 years ago, with similar specs (I7, FULL-HD, 8G, SSD) it costs over 6 times what I just paid. It still is a snappy machine to this day, don't even have to think about upgrading, but was sorely tempted to get another for myself ;-)

    Cheers,
    James

  • +1

Too slow and price has gone up to $899.10.

  • How are you guys getting the $899.10 price (even after the price has gone up)? After I applied the coupon it's showing $1,079.10 for me.

  • Deal's over
They changed it so there is a default coupon ("DEALS"). Effectively the price has gone up to $989.10.

Well done to everyone who got one. Can't wait for mine to arrive.

  • Mine arrived today very happy so far.
