Lots of RAM, lots of storage, but I'm still not completely sold on the atom cpu for android (after owning a zenfone 6). This phone also doesn't support 700mhz LTE - which is the new band that's being rolled out for better distance and penetration. Also, android 4.4? What year is it?

    • +1

700MHz is not widely used outside of Australia. Particularly in Asia where Lenovo and other brands would be marketing these phones.

    • +1

well, this one has newer Atom with more cores and memory. I beleive it will perform much better than one in zenfone 6, as for the android version, I agree with you. Should be 5.something at least.

      • +2

It wasn't the speed that was an issue, it was that some apps didn't work well on the x86 cpu. The situation was getting better, but you still came across apps that would crash.

        • this atom is 64-bit

        • @meanozbgnr: Does that matter? x64 is and x86 extension and is still not ARM. I assume that the crashes I had were to do with apps not compiling correctly for x86

        • @macrocephalic: x64 extension is modern, more likely it will not have "old" problems, but I guess you need to try it somewhere in the shops on demo phones with newer atom if there are any issues with the apps you need.

        • +2

          @meanozbgnr:
If it doesn't work with x86, it won't work with x64.

The problem is it's not ARM, which is what the vast majority of developers test and cater for. 32bit vs 64bit is irrelevant.

        • I've got a Chuwi Hi8 with a z3736 CPU and have not had any compatibility issues. The only real complaint is battery life. I suspect the arms are still better with power usage.

For sure reason the hi8 is also 4.4. The Hi8 Pro was supposed to be Android 5 / Windows 10 dual boot but the Android was dropped before release. Maybe the CPU and 5 don't play nice.

It's a shame that there's no 700mhz LTE considering the Zenfone 2 has it (on Taiwanese versions).

Be warned that the software that comes on Lenovo smartphones is pretty terrible. Malware, lag, bugs, you name it. You generally need to flash another ROM for it to be usable.

    • +2

Lenovo is also pretty quick to drop software support on their phones… they have a very short product lifecycle.

They get released, then get updates for the next few months or so but by next year Lenovo is concentrating on releasing the next new phone.

K3 note users however are apparently Marshmallow update but no such luck for anybody using a phone older than the K3 note or ZUk series.

Found the same on my zenfone. It was all good at first, but every time they updated the stock apps they added ads to more and more of them. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I don't like there being ads in my stock messaging app.

  • Red is 30 USD dearer.

    The turbo model.

I actually checked this before buying the Redmi note 2, glad I didn't buy it

    • +1

I just got my son a Redmi note2, nice phone, cheap, pity it doesn't have 700mhz band 28 ….. one of the US carriers has just got a 700mhz license so lets see what the future holds.

flashing the Redmi was easy … came with China version, loaded the global version …. all clean and good to go.

      • +1

I love it too. I am on Optus and it works fine on that network. Yes, how easy it was to install the global rom package!

I hope they make the Marshmallow for it though

  • How hard is it to root? And, perhaps more importantly, how hard is it to get clean (and preferably updated) Android on here? It's not uncommon for these cheap/resold phones to have malware from the distributor. At least with the Xiaomi phones it seems simple to flash clean MIUI on there.

Judging by this, at least some of these phones are shipping with malware.

    • it seems simple to flash clean MIUI on there

Not any more. They are starting to lock bootloaders requiring you to "apply" to have your device unlocked.

I'd be avoiding them at all cost now.

      • Ah. That's not good.

I'm really hating this drive to further lock down devices we supposedly own.

        • +2

The Xiaomi Note 2 does not have a locked bootloader, as that was before Xiaomi started locking down. The Note 3 and all other Xiaomi phones that are more recent will have locked bootloaders.

        • +1

          @scrimshaw:

But does a locked bootloader stop you from installing a properly signed OEM ROM? Usually not, IME.

        • +1

will just be a matter of getting the global signed version on, and the you get OTA updates.

Xiaomi have the chinese and global signed ROMs on their web site …… seems india is the next market hence global ROMs for users outside china.

The bloatware the chinese versions come with …… in China it's a selling point because they have their own social media and shopping mall sites and so users like the apps preloaded.

For us they are useless in Australia and india hence global ROM as an option.

I'm very impressed with Xiaomi and their signed ROM support.

      • +1

For custom ROMs that's an issue, but if you just want to install a clean signed ROM it's no issue. You don't even need to manually access the boot loader, there is an app in MIUI to select the [signed] ROM and flash your phone.

  • Lenovo never again after the K3 touch issues.

    • What's wrong with your touch? I love my k3. Not a single issue with it other than lacking wireless charging, which is rare these days for some reason.

      • Bottom right digitizer touch issue. Look it up, quite common.

        • Guess I got lucky. No issues with mine.

        • @gtr33m: Mine is still working great. I actually bought 3 of them, one for myself and two for mates and they all are working great so far.

Mum's iphone 5 keypad stopped working ( a year old iphone 5)and I gave my lenovo k3 to her. I bought a redmi note 2 now pretty impressed with it.
