  • Anyone worked out what the payout would be for early termination?

    • +5

Assuming the CIS hasn't been changed should still be $550 plus or minus first month depending if you already have a Telstra account or not. This or the plus for 800 are great deals considering Samsung lowballed the trade in offers this year

      • +2

I don't think this would be the case, given that the T&Cs state that "The Samsung S25 Galaxy 512GB phone [795456, 795457, 795458, 796459](referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” in the Telstra Terms and Conditions and replacing the dollar value of the Voucher in the Critical Information Summary) will be available to you instore after connection approval by Telstra".

So one would assume that the $550 in the CIS is replaced with $1387 in this case, unless i'm missing something?

        • In the past they haven't bothered changing the CIS on deals like this. It seems now they're doing the whole port in thing to get people to stop doing it, but you can get around that with $2 sims.

          • @Ghadi: sorry, what do you mean by get around it with a $2 sim? The way the T&Cs and the CIS is worded, they'll presumably bill you a pro-rata amount of the phones value ($1387) were you to cancel the plan.

I don't see how the type of sim you port from would affect that.

            • @Zerogravitas: it's always been worded like that but when you actually sign the CIS in store it still says maximum voucher fee of $800 so that's all you get charged by Telstra customer service.

the $2 Sim is just to be able to port in a number you don't care about so you can cancel without having to port in your number and then port back out.

              • @Ghadi: Ah cheers, thanks for that. Makes sense. So the tip is to go in and see what the actual CIS to be signed is… If it's $800 + a months plan fee at $79 I think the Harvey Norman deal is probably better, though does lock you into an optus plan.

Pity you probably can't use the $200 voucher to cover some of the voucher fee 😅

                • +2

@Zerogravitas: my mistake this is a 79 a month plan so the cancellation would be 550 not 800 my bad. 800 is for 99 a month plan.

                  • @Ghadi: Thanks - just went in and pre ordered, can confirm that the CIS I was shown and signed digitally had a maximum voucher repayment of $550. Ported a $5 aldi sim so will cancel once I pick up the phone in ~3 weeks.

                    • @Zerogravitas: So just to confirm, total payout would be $629??

                      • @Jewdas90: That's my read on it - I haven't cancelled yet as I haven't got the phone yet. But I don't see how it could be more than that given the terms I signed.

                        • @Zerogravitas: for posterity, payout on cancelling one day after collecting the phone was $527. So total cost of the phone was $606.

Now to sell the s22 and collect my TRS refund…

          • @Ghadi: That always existed (was there back in 2020). However you could ask your salesperson to create the plan on a new number and most obliged.

            • @Techie4066: You used to be able to get same deals regardless of doing new numbers or port in. What I'm saying is now they're doing different deals depending if it's a port in or a new number. For example during black friday, it was a 1200 gift card for port ins on the 99 plan and an 1100 gift card for new numbers on the 99 plan.

        • Not true. Max cancellation fee is $550.

  • +1

    Disappointing

  • Don't see much hardware improvements in this phone.
Not sure it is worth upgrading from S24U.

    • +2

Samsung has joined apple and pretty much just releases the same phone every year. I noticed r&d / hardware improvements practically dissappeared around 2020 following trade sanctions on Huawei in 2018.. samsung has no genuine competition anymore to keep them in their toes

    • -1

snapdragon vs exynos means better battery life thats a big plus for those who like compact phones with smaller battery

    • I'm still not sure its worth upgrading from a S22U

  • Anyone know what the deal with porting from telstra via another carrier is these days? Can I just switch to someone else for 1 day then straight over to jb to get this deal or is there a minimum time you need to not be a telstra customer?

Couldn't see anything in the T&Cs

    • you need to wait 30 days

      • Unless you've upgraded the backend platforms, not true.

I did it with a same-day port out (admittedly from JB) late last year.

        • not sure how you did that, afaik jb can see if you have left within 30 days and their systems don’t let you sign up

          • @HardlyNormal: went from JB to amaysim then to Good Guys. Didn't work initially because the termination payment was still outstanding for JB, but worked fine once I paid it.

            • @Dalryk: This is correct. If there’s an outstanding termination fee it won’t work.

      • Again, not true.

  • Not sure if worth upgrading from s21 bought in mid 2021 for me. $550+79=$629

    • +1

I would say jumping from s21 to s25 is worth it. Also the 21 is End Of Life from October 2025.

    • I'm in a similar boat, although mine is S21+. Still working well so no need to upgrade per se.

These phone plans are also hit by inflation- they use to be free on $59 plans 😑

      • Dont even feel its worth upgrading from Samsung A73…
        Disappointing new phone

    • I just replaced my s21 battery, I can hold out until the s27, or when security updates cease, whichever comes first.

  • I was looking forward to upgrading my S22 (256gb) 3yr old phone but trade is only $260. So disappointing. If I could get my battery changed I rather keep using my S22.
    I got the s22 at JB (2021) with trade-in + 500 bonus discount for around 800.

    • can sell it for around $370 on mobile monster. Little bit better than the trade in

      • +2

TBH I would rather get the battery changed (if there is a service like that) and keep using it

        • I've asked Samsung for my S21 and it wasn't expensive to replace the battery. I haven't done it yet.

          • @mcmurphy: How much is it through samsung? I just did it myself for about $60.

  • +1

Surprised this deal aint getting more love considering ETC and overall cost if planning to cancel. Is there something im missing?

    • It’ll blow up on the last day of the promo then people will miss out. Where else can you get an S25 for $550 + $79?

      • Agree, surely wont get cheaper than this, and if it does, how long will one wait. I signed up yesterday. In my case ill be selling s21 and claiming TRS refund on the $1387 invoice making this ~$300 out of pocket. Will likely get 4+ years out of this phone.

  • Which is better value for money?

    S25 on $79 plan
    S25+ on $99 plan
S25 ultra on $99 plan + $437 (or $237 whatever the case may be)

They are all 512GB models and no upfront cost for the S25 and S25+.

  • Just cancelled and was told that the pay out will be $520. Happy days.

    • 256GB model? And can you cancel before you receive the phone?

      • 512gb. And yes I cancelled before receiving it.

At the store they scanned a voucher, so the phone is already paid for.

        • Can you sign up and cancel t the same time with the same sales person to save time? :D

    • Did you get the $79 first month refunded? Tried my luck but the Telstra support clerk was switched on about the TOS - might try my luck again tomorrow.

      • +1

My rep was very upfront about it being non-refundable, even though my SIM card was never used. I was considering to just use it for 2-3 weeks before cancelling, but decided to just cancel it right away

        • meh $600 is still a solid deal for a new s25 - had to get the 256gb since they ran out of 512gb

      • +1

I was denied $79 refund either

  • +1

How easy once the phone arrives instore after preordering is to cancel? Do I just go to Telstra chat and cancel. Through the app etc? And when does the $550 charge come through?

    • +1

I went home and cancelled straight away. Didn't even have to ask for the refund as they offered to do the refund for me.

Think I will receive the charge in the next couple of days.

      • Thanks. I thought it was $550 for the 512GB. So it is only $520? And did you cancel with Telstra via Chat or some other method? Did they confirm your cancellation fee and that you wouldn't be charged the $79 for the first month of the plan?

        • +2

I was surprised that it was $520 because the CIS stated $550. The person on chat said that they would process my refund next week as the transaction was still pending.

      • What's the advantage of cancelling straight away, vs if you wait until you get the phone?
Also could I ask, do you get the phone delivered or can go back in the store?

        • My understanding is that if you cancel straight away it's easier to justify a refund on the monthly fee.

I bought in store so it was pick up.

  • planning to do this today, and the overall fees will be $550 ? and still can get a new number during signup or it need to be ported from another provider ..

    • Did you do it? How'd it go?

      • I did went over to JBHifi and sign up for the deal, but still in progress due to Optus porting still pending (Sunday and Public Holiday) and hoping it will finalized this morning, will keep you updated how it go after.

        • Finally, the porting went thru an hour ago and straight to Telstra chat for cancellation and were told it wil be around $520.. and still waiting for the cancellation email… anyone got email confirmation from JBHifi on how to pickup the phone ?

          • @annielee: Nah I haven't received any email from JBHiFi regarding the phone only a paper receipt.

            • +1

@mystershopper23: hmm.. i dont even have the paper receipt, as the porting still pending during that time.. hope there wont be an issue when the pickup date comes.. also managed to get $79 refunded…total for the phone about $450 ($530-$79+$14-optus sim)

              • @annielee: Wait what? You get $79 back when you haven't paid that yet? How does that work?

                • @coldazure: my bad.. 1st time doing this and got my calculations wrong.. still $530 + $14-optus sim .. also $79 refunded yesterday already and now waiting for the phone to arrive.. and seems will get a tax invoice if im not wrong, hopefully can claim TRS for my next month travel.

                  • @annielee: Yeah it definitely qualifies for trs. That's still an amazing price for a flagship.

        • Did you ask about new number?

          • +1

@CodeXD: I did. Not applicable to this deal. It must be a port in. It should go without saying but that also means that porting in with an existing Telstra number won't qualify either.

  • Also id like to know does anyone know if this for porting only or new numbers are okay?

Also anyone knows what impact this would have on the credit rating to purchase and to cancel?

  • Bit of a noob, can someone explain this deal? My understanding is your sign up, get the deal and then cancel immediately where you get to keep the phone but have to pay the JB HiFi voucher fee of $550 thus making the phone only cost $550 ?

Are there any downsides to this? Seems a bit sneaky

      • +2

how's that fraud? you're paying the voucher fee which is part of the critical information summary if you cancel

    • downside is a credit enquiry on your credit report

  • So I signed up for a kogan esim this morning on a 10 dollar pre-paid plan.
Went to Jb Hi Fi and signed up for the deal - confirming the maximum payable for cancellation was $550.
    Kogan number ported immediately.
Cancelled with Telstra - rep wouldn't refund the first the month (might try another one a bit later?) but confirmed it would be ~$526 I will have to pay.

Only got a paper receipt from JbHiFi but was told I will get a call and/or email when my phone is ready for collection.

    • You mean $550 + $79 = $629? Plus eSim $10. Thats $639 for a S25.

      • +1

        No, I mean 526+79 + 10 for the esim.
Others here have had success getting out of the first month payment if they keep trying the online chat which I will do. Even with no luck thats $615 for a phone that is normally more than double that on release day, ill take it.

        • +1

Second person I spoke to gave me a refund for the 79

          • @Sm3g: I just did it, $526.93 for the early termination. Had to speak to a second person and they waived the $79, but as its a pending transaction, have to call them next week to make sure its done.

            • @bozaar: this happened with me as well, except the support person over chat told me to try in 72 hours.

EDIT: I should mention that chat asked me to check with them in 72 hours and request a refund then, because the initial $79 payment was still in pending so they cannot actually issue the refund now, and they expect that payment to clear in 72 hours. They haven't actually submitted the request yet. This means there's still a tiiiiiiny chance that they could reneg on that refund when I reach back out to them in 3 days, and it's likely that's what's happened with you as well. fyi.

          • @Sm3g: Hi i'd like to do the same, did you cancel straight away on the same day or another day?

Are you a bit weary that you wont get the phones since u cancelled or it's pretty clear you will get them.

            • @jes: I cancelled on the day. Easier to ask for the $79 back.

Given a receipt for the phone by JB, pick up on launch day

              • @bozaar: Is there any way to cancel with the JB sales person immediately? Or is that not possible or too shady?

                • @coldazure: No, you have to call or do webchat. Once the JB sales person does your contract, its not their problem now.

            • @jes: Same day, literally got home from the store, logged in, cancelled with telstra chat.

And I have a receipt that shows I bought the s25 with a gift voucher for the full value of the phone, its paid for a pre ordered just gotta pick it up when it's launched.

              • @Sm3g: Did you have to activate the Sim for this to work?

E.g. would it work if I just go into Kmart and buy one of those $2 Telstra prepaid and immediately go to JB without popping the Sim into my phone and activating it?

                • @coldazure: You need to activate it to port a number.

                  • @bozaar: thanks for replying, I did end up going ahead and found out the process. thanks buddy.

  • Hoping these deals get extended as I have about 2.5 more months on contract with Optus/Floptus and looking to jump on this one…

  • Does anyone know if we will be getting the phone one the 6th or the 14th?

    • The staff at the store mentioned that I'll get the phone on 14th Feb but the Jbhifi chat and website mentions 6th Feb so very confusing.

      • Yea, and now I check the site it says 4th of feb… hope we do get it earlier

    • I got a text saying it was ready this morning. Then went in and was told I cannot collect until the 14th

  • -2

So if we cancel the $79 plan we dont pay any fees apart from first month $79. No fees or cancellation charges for remaining 23 months of Telstra plan?
I get max Repayment fees to JB is $550 but that is against the voucher, what about Telstra fees for remaining term. Isnt this 24 months lock in?

    • The only fee is the voucher repayment, that's all telstra care about because as far as they're concerned they face jbhifi 550 dollars to give you a voucher and want it back.

  • First world problems, but fyi JB does not have Black option on release, which means you wouldn't be able to claim it as part of this deal either. You'll have to choose one of their available colours.

  • I understand the free 512gb upgrade offer will last until 13/02. Will the $0 upfront plan for $256gb S25 with $550 ETC + $79 be available after that? Asking as I am going oversea during Easter so can only purchase the phone in later Feb to claim TRS.

    Thanks in advance!

    • +1

Both deal ends on 13th Feb.

    • +1

Mate, you better take on the pre-order deal rather than getting TRS back. You'll only getting ~$120 back from TRS claim, but you're losing on the free storage upgrade and this telco deal.

    • Thanks for the suggestions, I will get it this weekend. :)

  • Thanks OP. I preordered 2 pcs. I have few Amaysim sim cards that I didn't recharge previously. Cancelled the plans through chat in Telstra app with early termination charges of $526.93 x2

Later the $79 x2 will be refunded too :)

The staff said stocks will arrive on 4 Feb ;-) for pickup.

    • Did Telstra say get back in touch with them for a refund after the $79 credit payment clears in a couple of days?

Just checking if you were able to get better assurance than that from Telstra chat.
