  • More of a netbook than laptop since it's an Atom.
Can the 2GB RAM be upgraded?

    • Most Laptops now are unibody, so yes, but its difficult and requires a professional.

    • +1

ram is not upgradeable as far as I know

I have been using mine daily for the last couple of weeks

Browsing using Firefox 5-10+ tabs, Netflix or YouTube & other apps running in the background, its quite snappy and does well

      VLC & Kodi works fine

memory upgraded via SD card slot

uptime is between 6-8 hours depending on what your doing

Would've been pretty disappointed if I'd bought my ASUS X205TA (same CPU, same amount of RAM, same performance) with the expectation it'd be snappy.

Used mine daily for almost a year, and it doesn't take much web browsing etc. to be reminded I'm not using my desktop. When I hit resource-intensive/poorly-optimised sites, it can get downright frustrating - e.g. 33 seconds just to complete loading Woolworths in Firefox vs 9 seconds on my desktop; 15 seconds vs 8 seconds for IE.

        • Firefox is a RAM hog and on a device like the X205TA, you're better off using Chromium or Vivaldi for complicated web pages.

        • +1

@Droidyy: Firefox is slow but Memory usage is lower on Firefox. And Google chrome eats most memory compared to pretty much any other browser.

      • +1

Still better off saving that money for a higher quality laptop. Even at twice that price at 400 you're looking at a far better experience, and you're less likely to run into a performance brickwall.

From the Lenovo site, this 100S uses an Atom Z3735F CPU:
      http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-100/ide…

From the Intel site, the max memory suported by the Atom Atom Z3735F CPU is 2GB:
      http://ark.intel.com/products/80274/Intel-Atom-Processor-Z37…

  • No one should be buying a laptop with 2 GB

    • +4

      why?

      • +2

While Microsoft would tell you the Minimum Ram required for a 32bit system is 1GB (which I believe this one is) in real world cases its 2, after stripping programs and turning off unrequired services does the system become stable enough to run programs, even then I would say that you are limited to one page web browsing and light program use. I say this a someone who would rather not see see a non tech savvy user buy this.

Edit: Not to mention the bloatware the computer might come with, one HP computer I worked on had its trackpad software using round 500-1GB of Memory.

        • +5

you may be suprised at the performance. I have 3 separate firefox instances running with several tabs open in each - one has 10+

listening to streaming radio at the same & a few apps running in the background - it does well

        • +1

I am using Unisurf 10 (intel atom with 1 GB ram) attached to FHD TV and using with wireless mouse and keyboard. Using Kodi and youtube in 1080p and no problems. I use MS edge but multiple pages for browsing is no problem. After about 5 pages computer starts to slow down. And I have steam installed on it too. Mostly for steam stream but I play few games like gta san andreas and battle block theatre etc natively too(not in FHD though).

        • +1

I'm the kind of idiot that buys an Atom tablet for gaming on the go (Acer W4 8"). 2GB RAM.

          Steam installed, 32GB MicroSD in.
CSGO runs at a stable 45-50 FPS at 1024x768.
          Most games run similarly.

I've had 5 tabs open in Chrome at once - one of them being 720P YouTube. No slowdowns.

Don't underestimate how far Microsoft has come with optimisation in recent years.

        • @Droidyy:
I have a couple of similar tablets and was wondering how things like portal would go on them. I guess you have answered that question for me. Thanks!

          BUT MY ANECDOTAL TESTIMONY!

    • +2

Its 11 inch screen. I don't think anyone would want to do 4 tasks at a time on it. 2 GB should be enough ram for someone getting 11 inch screen laptop.

  • Bought for my kid for Xmas (at $247, damn it). Works well, nice screen, light, snappy response times. Am happy with the purchase.

    • +1

If you buy within 7 days in HN and bother to do so for $20+, can try - HN price guarantee

    • did it have office 365 m8? cheers

      • Nope, sorry.

    • Does it stream 1080p fine? How about from the HDMI out to a TV?

    PC World Review.

The biggest concerns are probably the 2GB of ram and 32GB of storage. Would make a good chrome book or linux with nfs.

    • I think that is review for Ideapad 100. And this is 100S. Different specs and screen sizes.

    • no problems with the 2GB its been snappy and fast for what Ive been using it for (mainly browsing & watching video). I was quite surprised at the performance for such a cheap unit.

32 GB storage, upgradable via SD slot have a 64GB card in mine permanently approximately 96bg total - should be enough for awhile

    • +1

Please note that these baytrail systems are difficult to install linux on. Do a google but be prepared for headaches and no Wifi, sound or BT.

  • It's a good laptop for Netflix, video watching, internet browsing and playing some retro games. Don't expect the world from it. It's on par with those Intel PC sticks but has a screen, trackpad and keyboard. If you get a USB ethernet hub you can wire it. It's very snappy and boots up in 10 seconds.

  • Thanks so much! I was just about to buy this from jb might see if they'd be willing to price match. Only getting it to use whilst backpacking for a few weeks for movies on transport, backup/upload my photos and book hostels. I'll probably add a 64gb microsd card to expand the storage, disappointed it's not usb 3.0 since backups would be a LOT quicker but for $200 I can't complain.

$178 as you get $25 cashback from Microsoft good deal!

    • How?

        • You sure that works when Office 365 is included with a PC? You need to upload proof of purchase and I'm not sure if they'll accept the receipt unless it specifically states "Office 365".

        • @decryption:

Product can be purchased as either product key card (PKC), point of sale activation (POSA), electronic software download (ESD) or included with a device. Purchases made from auction or bidding websites and overseas online retailers are not eligible. Office 365 University is not eligible for this offer.

        • @decryption:
yes done it before twice :)

        • Is office 365 included with this though? Can't see anywhere on hn or lenovo sites that it is?

        • @Wilburre:

On the lenovo US site, it says office 365 1 year is included

        • @easternculture:
Ah it didn't say anything on the lenovo au site so I wondered if it was a regional thing

        • @Wilburre:

Its still a good price though. Trying to find something decent for $150 to buy with so i can claim the $50 amex. Any suggestions ?

        • @easternculture: Bought one today. Office 365 is not pre-installed.

        • @SnakeCasablanca:

not even a Card with office 365 key ?

        • @easternculture: Not that I saw. Only a card with a Twp year 100gb cloud storage with one drive.

        • Easternculture/aussman - thanks for the info, it helped me lodge a claim a couple of weeks ago. How did you demonstrate that you purchased a device that has office included? They've just sent me the below email which says the product (presumably office365 personal or office365 home) must be stated on the invoice/order confirmation, and they already have a copy of those with my original claim so I'm not sure what else I can provide that will satisfy them. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your recent claim as part of the Microsoft Office 365 $25 Cashback.

We have tried to validate your claim but need more information from you to do so, as one or more of the following points are not visible on the receipt/invoice/order confirmation already provided.

In order for us to validate your claim, could you please reply to this email with a copy of your purchase receipt/invoice/order confirmation, making sure that the below points are clearly visible on it.

          · Date of purchase

          · Product purchased

          · Payment finalised & made in full

          · Store purchased from

Please note that this needs to be received before 31/01/2016 or your claim will not be able to be validated.

  • Thanks OP. I will only use for web surfing, email, watching movies and streaming as I'm using my Asus memo pad 7 mainly for those now and it got 7inch display only. So this is an upgrade. But i feel constrained by the memo pad's storage of 16gb and that only take 32gb microSD cards.

I see the lenovo only has 32gb so thats a bummer. Can I use 128gb SD cards on this. I guess other option is portable HD which I can't use on my memopad

    • yes to sd card

      • Cheers

I bought one today. I have a pretty powerful home computer and was surprised at how quick it is. You also get 100gb of one drive cloud space. I was a bit worried because I have seen slow and laggy cheap netbooks and this one is pretty good. Guess I have to wait until its all loaded up but happy with immediate performance.

I bought it for media use on trips etc.

Also picked up a 128gb Sandisk Ultra Fit from Ebay as well for about $52. I know about the potential heating problems… Im gonna risk it :)

  • So please anyone can confirm that it will support 1080p output through HDMI from web streaming??
I'm after something cheap that I can use as media player to attach to my tv
    Cheers

    • I am keen to know this too…. so close to pullin the trigger and using this as a Web stream box/holiday laptop.

      • I bought it. I'll let you know how it goes

        • Haha, today? Am trigger twitchy :D

        • Gah… could not resist. Bought one!

  • Guys is this laptop fanless? Can someone please confirm.

Some reviews on YouTube state this is a fanless laptop.

    • I bought one yesterday. Im no expert but would say it is fanless. Doesnt make any noise at all and considering it only has 32gb EMMC it wouldnt need it. Its a sleek device and am happy with the purchase.

      • +1

Cool, I have been looking for a fanless machine for work.I connect using a Virtual desktop for work. So local processing power is not important.

  • just picked one up. been using it all day and my battery is still on 40%. very good battery life, and performance has been great too!

I have 4 chrome users open with 50+ tabs and it was handling it well.

love it so far! no office 365 included though..

    • glad to know!

  • I received my Lenovo 100s today. Unfortunately it has a stuck bright green pixel. After some fretting i called HN and then went to the store and after MUCH stuffing around trying to get a hold of freakin staff i had it swapped. Staff did not haggle over my wanting a replacement but they were just so hard to get a hold of and very disinterested in general. Anyway, got the replacement and this one is fine.

Initial thoughts… viewing angles on the screen are not good, will have to see how annoying this is later when sharing between 2 people, but otherwise its pretty light, small, feels decent build quality, browsing and streaming are fine, all in all pretty good for $200 i have to say! Will be very handy when travelling.
