Not much bargain if it can't play H.264

    • -1

mate, most scene releases are x264 not h264, ive hardly seen h264

      • +4

People often use these two terms interchangeably.

x264 is the name of the encoder used to encode movies using the h264 codec.

      • +3

They mean the same thing. H.264 is the standard. x264 is a free software library for H.264. Scene releases using x264 are just h264. Wikipedia has all the gory details.

    • +5

ok so what price would this be a bargain at. Its a bit like saying a Yaris cant do 250km an hour, while a Merc can.

is H264 absolutely critical. There are video converters available. And yes thats a pain, but for $45….

More the issue is the interface and how easy it is to use.

Just letting everyone know for the real media files it only takes up to 640x480 resolution, otherwise this is a good deal :)

  • +3

hang on, these even play x264 mkv files, yes only is 720p but that resolution still looks great, heres some details.

    TOP BUY!

    • +2

thats for a different player i'm pretty sure

      • +2

ur right, its for a different model, still good buy at 40 bux.

    • +2

      isnt that for the AP-300?

    • +1

That's the wrong player - The forum you linked to is for the AP-300 which is a completely different model. Direct link to the AP-32B forum is here:
      http://www.astone.com.au/forum/viewforum.php?f=22

Astone is quoted below saying that because the AP-32B is an entry-level player, no extra development will occur feature-wise:
"as a entry level media player, no more feature request will be accepted, sorry about this."

The AP-32B would be great if you already have a lot of content encoded into AVI from DVD, like my friend who can use this to play his DVDs when he's travelling. He can hook the AP-32B up to the hard drive he already carries for backing up conference material, so he can watch them in any hotel room anywhere. He owns all his DVDs, doesn't use Blu-ray and never downloads anything so this device is perfect for him. This device is also good for turning a cheapie LCD TV into a monster size digital photo frame.

    A decent deal from COTD…….finally!

    Good deal & good price

I have one of this, here are few Pros and Cons

    Pros

Very easy to use, my grandparents in their 80s can use one with 15 minutes of teaching
Very small and makes no noise
Supports multilingual on screen menu and file names

    Cons

The processor in it isn't very powerful, sometimes it skip frames when playing RMVB and AVI files. Not sure about other formats, as I haven't tested any other formats.
The USB port is forward facing, I would prefer it to be rearward facing, but this is personal preference.

  • +1

Does it play 720p and 1080p quality movies?

  • +1

NIce.. so if i plug in my NTFS harddrive it can play movies from there? even my xbox cant do that!

  • +2

This is my second one. Got my cousin onto it as well. Really cheap and works great. Even if you take it away when traveling, it's a great little media hub. 720p is fine it's purpose and price is great enough to suck me in.

  • +1

This is great. Only catch it it does not play .mkv files. I get an read error. However, can get around it by playing those files via a computer.I have seen apus offer it for slightly lower price earlier.

  • +1

    SOLD OUT!!! Damn!!!

  • +1

Good cheap player for most files if your NOT looking to do HD. I have previously purchased 2 of these for the in-laws & my parents so I can stop burning dvd for them.

  • +2

This unit will not play MKV files.
however, it can play High-def xvid/divx files at 720P
due to its limited processor, 720p playback will have some lags.

This unit was designed as an alternative to your DVD player, not an alternative to a blu-ray player.
The other models will do that (ap-100 or ap-300).

    • +1

But the specs say it does play mkv files.

"Divx 3/4/5/6, Xvid DivX 3.11, DivX 4.12, DivX 5, DivX 6, DivX HD, Xvid 480i/480p/576i/576p/720p/1080i
Xvid: GMC not supported AVI MKV

      Now I'm confused.

This is cheaper at Anypc by 1 cent!!! And still available

    • +1

Is AnyPC Any good? I have never tried them. I noticed that there are no credit card options, but just PayPal/Internet banking transfers.

  • +1

I have one of these…. some movies play perfectly… some I can't play at all.

Can anyone reccomend some code encoding software and/or encoding settings so I can re-encode movies to play on it?

    cheers.

total video converter , bloody awesome program

  • +1

good spotting colaman, just purchased x1

  • +2

It's a brilliant price for entry level and the specifications are exactly that. For someone who's currently using a dodgy dvd player to watch divx movies and tv shows this is a much better option but for the geeks and those who want a real HD media player (aka cheap and silent "htpc") the ap110D at a minimum is for you (~$70 more).
