  • I missed out on last one so might get this one.Anyone know what vodafone quality is like?

    • i've tried vodafone and virgin and am currently on 3.
Vodafone was the best for connection quality IMO, but their self service website is useless. doesn't work a lot of the time, and usage tracking is up to 3 days behind.

Depends a lot on reception though, and usage in the area. I've found that all the carriers suffer slow speeds at night after 6pm. though, atm 3 is really bad… seems like it can have fast speeds for one connection, but when you try to use more than 2, it just dies. -.-

    • quality of network? well i know that vodafone just upgraded their network. also vodafone now uses 3's network. as 3 and Vodafone are one company VHA

  • Do you think we can get them from officeworks?

  • Has anyone used this one with Linux? The Telstra one doesn't work at all with Linux but need one that does.

That's all you need to get it going :)

I had one small issue, and that is it only activates the modem when you launch the program, so you can't just plug it in and use say Gnome Network Manager. There's a tweak in the forums somewhere which fixes it if you want to search for it.

I've got mine unlocked for free (see the old ozbargain thread) and working with an Exetel (OPTUS) sim. The vodafone linux software lets you use any APN/network (if unlocked) whereas the windows software doesn't.

Vodafone coverage seems better where I am, with better latency/ping, but the optus network is faster (when it gets a decent signal).

Light Blue led means you've got a 7.2 connection ;)

      • Thanks for the info :) Much appreciated.

  • Can you swap the SIM's out? can you just use the device without being tied into Voda network?

  • Bought one in early January for that price.

It is locked to the Vodafone network but can be unlocked for $50 apparently.

  • Unlike December, there is no free 1Gb d/l on offer, correct?

From the catalogue (linked), it is just the modem.

    Good news!
Vodafone's page shows this $79 prepaid modem with 1Gb if activated by 31 March! :)

Effectively a revival of the previous deal, expiring end of March.

I am with Vodafone for both mobile voice and data. Not greatly impressed. Firstly, their service and recordkeeping sucks. I have a $20 voice plan plus a $10 data pack (200mb) which I ordered from their website. They rang me to confirm the order, the girl left out the data pack and I specifically told her then I wanted it. When I got my first bill, it was for something like $400 as they had not included the data pack. When I queried I had all sorts of hassles. First, they denied I ordered the data pack at all and made me prove I'd actually ordered it (ie I had to produce the screenshots and receipts from the transaction on their website). Then when I did prove it they came up with some convoluted formula that meant that even though I'd only used 70 meg of the 200 meg of data (and $140 of the $150 cap) I still owed them $210. I tried to explain to them that it was impossible but they are utter morons and were unable to understand it. It was only when the telecommunications industry ombudsman became involved that all of a sudden they understood what I was trying to tell them and they corrected my bill. Then the next month my bill was incorrect as they made the same mistake again (fortunately this time I sorted it with a single email). They are probably only the same as every other telco, but I'd be hesitant to use them again. Once my contract is up I'll be moving on. I'd certainly never deal with them on the phone, I'd want everything in writing. I've also not been impressed with their coverage. I'm not going to negative the deal - it'll no doubt suit some people - but as I say I'm very wary of Vodafone.

    • This dongle is prepaid though ;)

  • I am thinking to purchase one dungle unlock it then join dodo prepaid plan as it is cheaper than vodafone. Do you think my plan will work?

    • I'm using mine with Exetel who use the Optus network (Dodo does the same).

The only issue is that you can't change the APN using vodafones connect software in windows. There's some Huawei modem connect software that apparently works, but I couldnt get it to work in Windows 7. If you can't get it to work then your pretty much stuck with vodafone if you can't find another software alternative.

The linux software I posted above is different and lets you change the apn.
