  • Well this makes mince meat out of that other deal just posted. I really have no reason to spend on something like this but i must admit its quite tempting. 3TB of storage.. mmmm yummy :)

Exact details of the bonus items and the admin charge of $28 to $43 (depending on the item) for the redemption can be found at http://www.samsung.com/au/experience/promotion/files/itpromo…

So stupid to put an admin charge on a a bonus - gives a strong feeling of devaluing the bonuses - simply poor marketing :(

Agreed. They (Samsung) should absorb the (in reality) shipping charge as a part of the marketing. If I won a competition I wouldn't want them to ask me to pay for shipping even though I'm ahead $wise and grateful for the prize/offer - I think it's better PR value to absorb the cost. Good deal in other respects.

why does the admin charge increase with the size of the 'gift'? It seems like a shipping charge disguised as a admin fee which you shouldnt need to pay for in the first place.

Charging people for taking up a promotional offer is meh.

    • so don't claim the gift if you're that stingy.

I reckon its a pretty awesome deal, you could probably offload the LCD for $200

so a pretty nice spec'd lappy for $850

It's not so much about being stingy but the principle of the matter. A true gift does not have strings attached to it. By making you pay for a portion of a gift, it is not really a gift anymore.

        If I said heres $200 but I'm taking $50 away. I didn't really give you $200 did I? So I shouldnt say I am.

Looking at Ozem61 and daydream's post, I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

Pretty hard to offload the LCD when MSY sell them for $189 :(
        After the $36 admin fee, you'd be lucky to clear $150 for the monitor ;}

    • I don't see anybody complaining when the PS3 required $25 shipping fee as well for the Bravia promotion?

      • If people didn't complain about that promotion it doesn't turn this one okay.

        • Well I don't think Samsung's charges on free products make this deal bad… The computer deal alone without even considering the bonus items is awesome - so the bonus items are just a bonus.

        • It does, actually. Both companies (Sony and Samsung) charge shipping for the gift that comes with their product. Even Sharp charged $25 shipping for delivering their "free Xbox".

What makes Samsung the worse company here? Seems like a legit promotion to me, and some biased opinions towards Samsung from you.

          • @robhung: What others do doesnt change what it is. If you were caught speeding and your defence was the cars in front were doing the same thing it doesnt change the fact you were speeding.

You're also making the assumption that I approved of what sharp and sony did, but where did I say that? this thread is about samsung so maybe thats why I'm naming them?

            • @Lenneth: I will reiterate what I said below:

My point is: regardless of when you actually pay this “fee” (at the retailer’s point of sale or during online redemption): you’d still have to pay this cost regardless. I’m sure every redeemable bonus that’s ever happened in the past has had the shipping fees tacked on SOMEWHERE, therefore your complaint is moot. If you think otherwise, you’re just being awfully naive.

              • @pais: Just like you know that "You not having purpose for this memory != nobody having any purpose for this memory.", not hearing other people complain about Sony's offer != nobody complained about Sony's offer.

                • @Lenneth: I'm not refuting whether anyone complained about anything.. I'm telling you that you're lacking any logic/reasoning.

    • This is an included redeemable bonus. If they don't charge you shipping (which is essentially all this "administration fee" is, I'd have to infer), where do they recoup their loss that obviously has to be factored in? Tack the 36$ into the final price tag at OfficeWorks / JB / wherever you buy them from?

My point is: regardless of when you actually pay this "fee" (at the retailer's point of sale or during online redemption): you'd still have to pay this cost regardless. I'm sure every redeemable bonus that's ever happened in the past has had the shipping fees tacked on SOMEWHERE. If you think otherwise, you're just being awfully naive. This is a business; quit being stingy.

      • Well der, of course the cost of it has to come from somewhere. How about the same pool of funds that they used to do the giveaway? Some companies do do that and not charge shipping for their bonuses.

Again, this is not so much about saving a few dollars but about how they hide the shipping costs in the fine print instead of being up front with it. And most companies don't make you pay more for their bonuses or call it a 'gift' if they do.

Judging from the amount of complaints in this thread and the other one http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/21589 , I don't think I'm alone in thinking this is a badly run promo.

        • So…..

The issue you take is that you had to pay a shipping fee masked as an "administration fee", rather than stating it is a shipping fee. Meanwhile, any other company that runs this sort of promotion will mask all fees by lumping it onto the cost/wholesale price (or even just give a lower valued gift), and - in turn - you cop it at the point of sale.

One way or another, you're paying the fee. One way or another, it's masked somehow. Besides which, if you know that this "admin fee" is really a "shipping fee", then they're actually being more transparent about it than other companies that would recoup it elsewhere.

Having other peoples opinions reiterate your concerns does not validate your point, so it's rather, well, pointless to link me to other people's opinions. It's still an illogical argument. Get over your self-entitlement.

  • Wow…very tempting. I'm in the market for a new laptop. Shame it doesn't come with Windows 7 preloaded. That would seal the deal.

Going to have to look long and hard about this. Buy laptop. Sell HDD's for $300 = $800 laptop… hmmmm

    Thanks for posting the deal!

Once again the expected return on your "gifts" have been inflated.
Would be getting $140 for each of these ugly drives (but few externals are considered sexy)
      http://www.digitalstar.com.au/detail.aspx?ID=41989

So $280 minus the admin fee of $28.50 and your looking at (hopefully) $250.

      • Funny how they never show the tangled mess of power supply/cables for external drive promo pics ;-) Shame they aren't the eSata version to make use of the port on the laptop.

  • Good deal. Unfortunately I just bought a new laptop a few weeks ago.

  • Great deal, very tempted
however I will be holding off my next laptop purchase until it supports USB 3.0.
Expected to release in early 2010.

  • Currently shopping for a laptop on behalf of my half-sister. Budget is $800, but if i could sell the 2 x 1.5tb hard drives to get $250 off the price, then $850 would be an excellent price for a laptop with these specs. A C2D 2.53Ghz, and a 1gb GPU. Awesome.

  • Does MLN qualify for this offer?

  • Can anyone confirm that the monitor is the P2250?

On the Samsung website it says the RRP for this is $449
