      Standard USD price maybe..
Certainly not the Standard AUD price if the Pebble website is indicative.

I like your name and the votes.

Thats pretty cheap. Luckily I sold mine last week for $200.

    • +1

This is from owner of pebble time kickstarter (used it for 2 months) campaign: Dont get pebble if you had iOS. WHY? Here are my reasons:
      1. limited functionality e.g. cant use mic; pebble cannot browse your iPhone music library until you started to play some music first (you require a companion app to do this). In contrast with pairing andriod device, the pebble get much more notification interaction function whereas the iPhone only get the function to 'dismiss' only.
      2. Ugly bezel and it can get scratch mark very very very easily (the same scuffgate as iPhone 5), dimmed screen (too dark regardless with highest back light setting),
      3. Alot of apps require companion app which require user to install on the iPhone first. Pebble can only run 1 background app at a time. Often time the background app would disconnect from the pebble which then require user to re-launch the app again on the iPhone. I am lucky that my phone is jailbroken and had an app that fixes this problem.
      4. Not sure about others but my pebble often misses notification alert.
There are many more but I couldnt think of it right now. This is just my experience though, others might be different.
      Please forgive me grammar

      • +2

After using a PTS with iOS for a week I agree with some of these points.
Readability of screen is brilliant, second to none in direct sunlight. Backlight in the dark is adequate, like any traditional digital watch.
Although not ideal, a GadgetWrap screen/bezel protector solves the scratch problem.
There ain't many smart-watch options for iPhone users, and the Apple Watch certainly has its pitfalls.

        • +2

          I am with you jbuttnz
Right now this is a great watch and the Steel is over $500 cheaper than the equivalent Apple.
Though, the watch has limited functionality it does do the essentials well.
10 days battery life is also a bonus.
I think the standard Pebble Time looked a bit cheap, but my Pebble Time Steel looks fantastic.
Looks like DS have some good prices considering the AU$.

        • +1

I owned a pebble long enough to know that notifications on the wrist is a compelling feature but got frustrated with the lack of interactivity. I ended up buying an apple watch sport and am supremely happy with that decision.

        • @Alphaeus: How is the battery life? Which model? Should I wait for the 2nd gen?

        • +1

Absolutely, you need gadget wraps I bought my gadget wraps bezel protector and screen protector and no scratch at all. About USA $17 includes shipping
          www.gadgetwraps.com

They ship to Australia. It's worth it if you own a time.

          Slick wraps is cheaper slightly

        1. Being an Android user I can't speak for iOS related issues and what impact they have on day-to-day use, but it's just an unfortunate side-effect of Apple being Apple.
        2. The bezel is subjective, Pebble have a history of gear that damages fairly easily, but there are a range of screen protectors and skins for them. Hopefully this is something they work on in the future. The screen looks great to me, they added an extra brightness option to the watch so make sure you're using that. The screen is never going to be as bright as a full-on LCD, but that's the price you pay for having a screen that's always on.
        3. It's a basic smartwatch, it's not designed for running a bunch of apps in the background. If you're after what's basically another phone on your wrist then it's probably not the device for you, if you want a simple smartwatch that can go more than 2 days without a charge it's fantastic.
        4. I've never had that issue (that I've noticed), on my original Kickstarter Pebble or my Pebble Time Steel. I'd say it's another iOS issue as the watch can only display what's it's told to display.

I know a lot of people don't see them as a fantastic option, but I'm a big Pebble fan. The Apple and Android watches are fancy and pretty but personally they're overkill, give me something simple that just tells me what I need to know and lasts a week without charging any day.

        • +2

I have been using black and white pebble for 2 years before switching to time, for me pebble is simple to use does what it says and battery life!!
It really very simple it's a watch and it does what it says. The alarm is so reliable it never fails!

      • So the mic for iOS is useless then? Can you at least answer call and speak using the watch mic or just like the older Pebble you can only reject incoming calls then call the person back when you get your hands on your phone? Please let me know so I can made up my mind. Thanks in advance

Want to know because I am Thinking of upgrading my old Pebble to Pebble Time which has a built in mic so that I can quickly answer or pickup a call when my phone is not on me (like in the shower or doing my dishes) and if the Pebble Time mic's failed that then i might just stick to what I have.

        • +2

The mic is not for answering calls. plus there is no voice speaker in the watch for hearing voice calls.

On Android i believe you can send a voice message reply only, though has potential to do other things.

On iPhone, Apple have not allowed any functionality of the mic to be utilized (as yet).

If you want to be Dick Tracy, i suggest you look at another watch.

(Though for what it can do, i love my Pebble Time Steel)

  • +8

That's a great price for the Pebble Time - if you order via Pebble.com you're looking at $199 USD (Converts to $288 AUD).

  • Hm good price, can't find price referencing on the link/catalog though.

    • Yeah I don't think it's advertised online yet, though can confirm it's in their system instore.

  • +1

    Thanks Op.

Seriously considering upgrading at that price.

I have and love the Pebble Steel and was wondering what to upgrade to as I want just a few more options and a colour screen. I am almost entirely Apple devices now (just a PC desktop left) so the obvious thing to look at is the Apple watch but the price tag and stories about short battery life have been putting me off.

The Pebble range is getting dearer with every model also. Paid AU$149 at Dick Smith for the Steel.

Any comments on this vs the Apple Watch (for a largely Apple user)?

@notewar Sold yours last week - did you get the early adopter deal from Pebble?

    • +4

I find basic notifications from a good looking waterproof watch and a week+ battery life trumps what Apple currently has to offer.

      • Agreed.

Was just wondering whether there is a feeling on apps, performance etc of one vs the other for an Apple user.

I am starting to regret not doing the kickstarter deal now…
Dammed if I wait, dammed if I don't.

    • May i ask you where you got it from? i am actually after the steel

      • +1

DSE in Canberra (next to Costco), a few months ago now though. Have not been there in a while though to know if they still have stock.

        • +1

@clgt Just be aware he is talking about the Pebble Steel. Not the new Pebble TIME Steel.
the Pebble Time Steel is the new good looking one with the colour screen.

        • @deal88: i know, i actually feel the pebble steel is better looking and the new time steel despite lacking some features. But since it has been out for a while, not sure at what price i should get it

    • I have an apple watch, it only gives me less than 48 hrs if I use the activity app, could be longer if you don't. So annoying you have to keep it juiced up every night. But overall, I love it.

      • do you take it off anyway to sleep? I thought my G Watch would annoy me but it's not hard to just plop it on the charger when you go to bed

        • Yeah I do. I have the sleep cycle app to monitor sleep. Charger's magnetic just like yours I would say so it's easy. Sometimes I forget to charge it and when it asked to be charged, it's full in less than an hour.

  • +4

Question we are all thinking is.. Does one actually get this at a lower price than anyone else by pre ordering? Don't wanna get buyer remorse getting it and then there's a Dick Smith coupon code later on…

    • With DSE who knows.. If you're in the market it's probably worth risking for a $25 deposit.

    • +1

Why would you offer a consumer who is enthusiastic enough about a product to give you money without recieving anything other than a promise a discount? That's the type of consumer you take to the cleaners.

      • I don't understand your angle.. The consumer pays the deposit then the retailer delivers the product when available for the agreed price. The pre-order process is probably a good indication of how much stock to order.

  • +4

Having just received my Kickstarter Pebble Time Steel a few days ago, I initially felt a bit ripped off that I paid 249 USD when DSE are going to sell it for 249 AUD. However, I think the benefit of buying it via Kickstarter is that you get both the leather AND steel bands. I suspect that the DSE one will only come with the leather band, and that the steel band will be an optional extra.

    • +1

I also received mine last week, what's this steel band you speak of?

      • Did you get a Pebble Time or Pebble Time Steel? On the Kickstarter, PTS backers get 2 bands, (one leather, one steel). They were all meant to be delivered together but there was a manufacturing delay on the steel band, so that is being shipped separately.

        • +1

Kickstarter PTS in silver. Was just being facetious, patiently awaiting the steel band.

        • +1

          @jbuttnz:

          Hah, you got me :)

        • +1

@capnstoobie: I think everyone is still waiting for the steel band. Biggest issue for me is that I can not swim with the leather band. And weirdly, you can not buy an original Pebble time rubber watch band as an extra.

I have still been using my old Pebble with the bluetooth of when i am in the pool.

    • From the picture, it looks like the DSE Pebble Steel Time will only come with the steel band.

If that is the case, you would expect DSE would not be selling the Pebble Time Steel until all kickstarters have received their steel bands.
That would suggest a fair wait if you preorder.
I don't think Pebble would be stupid enough to sell the Pebble Time Steel with steel band to the public with out sorting out their current customers.

      • The price above will not include the steel band. I imagine it will sell for an additional ~$50.

        • +1

Just keep a copy of the catelogue. It's being advertised with a steel band. You could press the point if push comes to shove…

        • @S3ISOR:

          Big time!
I would expect a steel band. It hadn't even occurred to me that it wouldn't come with a steel band!

  • +1

Hopefully they'll get it in store soon. Really want to see it on my hand before commiting. I've got a pebble but the time is a bit different..

  • +1

I really wanted to try the Pebble Time Steel and that price is great.
I just preordered in store. I also discovered they have three colours in their system, black, gold and silver. I preordered silver (hoping to avoid scratches on the black). Thanks OP.

    • I have the silver. looks great. Not sure how the beige leather band will look in a few months and am really looking forward to getting the silver steel band.

      • Nice. The stone band does look nice as well. Are you finding yout PTS silver marks/scratches easily?

        • Been very careful with it. the silver seems fine.
Just the leather band "looks" dirty. i don't think it is actually but it is almost suede and looks used.

        • @deal88: Thanks for getting back to me :)

  • I have been tempted to upgrade and curious to experience additional features/improvements but I am concerned about the water resistant membrane of the microphone because my pebble's still going strong after 12 months wearing it surfing in the ocean no problems. My research suggests users that suffered water leaks may have been due to early/faulty units but it might still be somewhat risky for this kind of vigorous water sports. Can anyone confirm? And/or care to comment on additional features/improvements is it a really great/must have upgrade? Voice commands might be nice while driving I guess.

    • What phone do you use? My understanding is that the microphone only works on Android at present.
As an owner of both new and old Pebble, the main reason to upgrade is styling.

      • Samsung Galaxy S5 so Android. And, I just read a review that indicated the Timeline feature will also become available as software upgrade for the Pebble.

      • Yer, this was my concern to. I love that I never have to take my watch of. I also go surfing and have had no dramas (other than that wierd screen glitch due to lack of pressure within the pebble)

  • +1

I have a Pebble Time for the past 2 weeks running off my S6 edge.
It seems to be hit n miss with notifications and it seems to consistently disconnect from the phone.
I came from a MS Band and Lumia 930 and I must say I prefer the battery life of the Pebble, its waterproof and the watch does what I need it to do.

Hopefully the minor bugs will be ironed out, as it is a great watch for the price. My Bezel is very marked, but then I am not very kind to it, so it shows.

    • How's the battery life of both your devices? I'll have the exact same setup soon.

      • +1

I am getting around 4 days of heavy usage. The best part about the PT is that it seems to charge very quickly, so that you only need to connect it for about an hour to go from 20% to fully charged.

        • How has using it affected the battery life of your phone?

        • +1

@ChillBro: Not that I have noticed, as the S6 battery life sucks at the best of times.

        • +1

@ChillBro: Having the bluetooth connected supposidly uses 5-10% extra battery life, though I'm finding phone battery is lasting longer due to not constantly looking at phone for emails/calls/messages.

    • Amazon now taking Microsoft Band 2 preorders shipping 30 Oct you can use a reshipper service.
More curvier amoled screen heart rate measure USA $249 iOS and android compatible.

      https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_fb_0_6?url=search-alia…

  • Thats a great price, considering how much it is in USD. Wanted one initially, but ended up getting a moto 360 when it was on sale, and do not regret it :)

    • Speaking of the Moto 360. Pebble have also announced the Pebble Time Round.
Good looking watch (possibly more suited for the ladies?)
Really thin but less battery life.

      https://www.pebble.com/pebble-time-round-smartwatch-features…

      • Be interesting to see the cost of these. They really remind me of the Swatches from a decade or so ago!

        • +1

I liked the time round until I saw 2 day battery and more importantly can't take it underwater!

        • @zukand: When released, these are meant to be the same price as the Pebble Time Steel.

      • still eagerly awaiting the huawei watch! but it'll probably be double the price :(

        • @sane:

Double the price of an urbane on sale.. geez :/

        • Don't see what's so special about the huawei except the high price. Guess different strokes for different folks.

I prefer one with more battery life (e.g. pebble time's 10 days) and Huawei's 1.5 days just doesn't cut it.

      • That IS a nice looking watch, but since it's a Pebble, the 2 day battery life makes it less appealing and the bezel is huge, however it does look nice the way it is implemented on the watch. May be something to consider in the future for the missus.

Thanks for letting us know deal88 :D

  • I've had my Pebble Time for a couple months. Awesome.
Doesn't seem to have the screen corruption bug that the Pebble had.
So far nothing to complain about.

  • I got a PT a couple of weeks ago and have been fairly happy with it. It disconnects from my phone (Galaxy S3) every now and again but not very often. That being said I don't know if that's because of the watch or because of the phone…

Anyway I'm kind of feeling jipped right now because I paid ~$280 AUD direct from Pebble so the DSE prices are quite good.

    • +1

Though DSE "pre order" timing could be anywhere from now until Christmas.
And the Steel version already has delays on the steel band for current customers.

      • +2

Thanks for trying to make me feel better ;)

  • I've had a quick look through the reviews for Time Steel and they are not nearly as overwhelmingly positive as for the original Pebble Steel. Is it because they're no longer the only game in town?

I switched from a red Pebble to a high-end Android Wear device earlier this year and haven't looked back, although I do miss the terrific battery life of the Pebble. Granted, I paid a few times the price of my Pebble for the Sony but it's still half the price of the equivalent Apple Watch model.

    • Did you get the Smartwatch 3? If so, how is it? It's the only Android Wear watch I'm considering because of the GPS. Would hate running with my phone.

      • +1

Yes, I have the Sony Smartwatch 3 Steel (aka Executive) edition and I absolutely love it. I actually got the regular one first, which is probably the ugliest variant of its generation of Android Wear devices.

The clever thing about this smartwatch is that when you swap a band you essentially swap the body, so it has a completely different look.

When the stainless steel band was announced I was going to get it for sure, the only problem was that, unlike their silicon bands of different colours, Sony would only sell the steel band together with the watch ($377 at OW & TGG at the moment). And I didn't want to go through the hassle of selling my black silicon version, while also taking a loss, and then paying a few hundred more for a new one.

So I bit the bullet and bought the hard to find stainless still band from a seller in Europe for around $166 delivered. Yes, it's not pocket change and you can almost buy another smartwatch for that but it's literally turned the Smartwatch 3 from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. It looks even better on my wrist that it does on photos and I actually started getting complimented on it. Oh and I still have the silicon band, which can be swapped in seconds, for sports.

I realise that it probably doesn't answer your question but I haven't used its GPS capabilities without the phone. However, you can use it as a stand-alone bluetooth music player with 4GB storage if you have a Google Play Music subscription, which I do, but don't use the Smartwatch 3 for that purpose as I it doesn't sound as good as my a phone (probably due to a cheaper DAC and / or lack or AptX), but would be completely fine for podcasts and such or if you're not too picky about sound quality.

Besides the GPS, the Sony also has NFC, which is not currently supported by Android Wear but makes it more future proof than other models released in 2014/2015.

If you want to know anything else, let me know and I'll do my best to answer.

        • Thanks so much for your detailed response. I'm just looking to test the waters with a smart watch but I'm convinced with this one. Now to find a good price.

        • +1

@rorymeister: My pleasure. As far as getting the best price, I would definitely consider getting one used - the going price on eBay seems to be $180-$190 delivered. The used market for the steel / metal version is pretty thin but you can get a brand new one for $350.

Keep in mind that a new version will probably be coming out in the first half of next year, but it's likely to have 4G and be more expensive.

By the way, I forgot to mention that, contrary to the below post, I don't have random bluetooth disconnects, although I did experience them with a Pebble (although I was using a different phone at the time so not sure which device was the culprit).

        • @elektron:

          Thanks mate

      • Ugly lousy screen, short battery life intermittent Bluetooth disconnect extremely difficult to charge due to removing the rubber eyelet that covers the charging micro USB port to make it waterproof.

        • +1

I take it you know all this from extensive use? As a long time owner I can tell you that most of it is dead wrong.

The transflective screen is amazing - the brighter the ambient light the easier it is to read. I can even read it on a low brightness setting when going for a run on a sunny day wearing sunglasses. Try doing the same with your phone!

The battery is the best in class - I occasionally get 2 days out of it, but never less than a day. It had a bug causing an occasional rapid battery drain but it has been fixed through an update.

The micro-USB compatibility is awesome (especially if 1-2 days battery life is not enough for you). I can charge it at different rooms of my house, in the car, or at work.

I only struggled with the micro-USB flap on the day I when got it. After I got a hang of it, it takes me under a second to open it (and I keep my nails very short). And yes, I don't take it off in the shower or a swimming pool.

  • +1

Ffs I just got my Pebble Steel last week for 169. I'd happy pay the extra for the regular Time. Anyone here reckon it's worth the almost immediate upgrade? I'm liking the Steel but I do want a colour screen over B&W. And what other additional features are there?

    • It really is about styling. The colour screen (though nice) does not add much and possibly the contrast is better on the original.
I had (actually still have)the original Pebble, i sold my basic Pebble Time as i did not like the look of it (i thought it looked cheap). But i love the look of my Pebble Time Steel.
Functionality is "Same, Same, but different".

So i think it is only worth the upgrade based on your styling preference, especially if you like your Steel.

    • The time has a different user interface over pebble original.

      • There is meant to be an update coming that will bring the new user interface to the original Pebble.
Though, I thought it would of been released by now, so possibly there are some issues?

        • Possibly although I believe most pebble classic owners have upgraded to pebble time.
And of course the new time round.

    • It's definitely an upgrade if you have an Android phone. You will be able to action most notifications and reply to messages using templates or dictation.

  • Damn good price.I love my Pebble Steel.

  • +2

I just tried to preorder in store (Northland, VIC) and they don't know anything about it or able to take preorders. They can see the Pebble Time Steel in the system for $249 though (with zero stock) which is the important part. I was thinking the price was an error.

    • +3

They can take pre-orders. They have to do a 'customer order'. It's a slightly separate process. My local knew nothing about it either, but were happy to process an order with a 10% deposit.

      • +1

I will try this, coz I just came from glen waverely store (Vic) and they know nothing about it.

      • 'customer order' successful. Pebble time black ordered with a $20 deposit.

  • I bought mine from USA pebble website 2 months ago and paid $300 includes delivery paid too much for time as mine was USA $199 plus USA $25 shipping.
