Philips Tornado CFL Lamps $2 (Save $5.39/ $6.39) @ Woolworths [transient price error]

130

Update: See comment from mmd below, appears this was a price labeling error. Stores would have likely removed the labels.

Came across these at MacArthur Central CBD. These are a great CFL. Original price came up when scanning at checkout however they honored the $2 shelf price. The staff were unsure if the shelf pricing was correct and were considering removing the labels. I noticed on the Woolworths website they have new packaging so perhaps they are clearing old packaging.

I picked up 12, 15 and 20 watt B22 Warm White. There was also the smaller bayonet cap and edison screw, all with warm and cool white options.

These are high quality lamps, worth checking out. Unfortunately the don't stock the big 24 watt which is the king of CFL's!

This is the second week in a row that Woolies has had bargins on lamps. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211971

  • This deal has been running for a couple of weeks already. So most places have probably already been ozbargained.

This deal, specifically Philips CFL started yesterday. I've not seen it previously and I've been looking quite a bit.

  • So is any stock available now?

In my experience, if the price tags are out of date, they would usually be removed straight afterwards.

So unless someone can confirm stock now exists, it's a pricing error, expired, or insufficient stock to make a

The yellow labels have 30/09 - 10/10 marked on them.

        So confirmed & upvoted.

But you were then entitled to 1 free product of each variety - store scanning policy.

I find my local Woolies in Brisbane does not update prices on first day of sale period. Deli manager just asks what I want free. Have got so much free smoked salmon, cheese, & olives ;-)

        • Yeah I didn't want to push that one, the 20w warm BC were not yellow labeled so I asked they be removed from the cart. After scanning the rest (and overiding the price) they offered the 20's for $2!

        • @fatty:
It's not an issue in my experience, but depends on staff.

Staff are amused by my frugal ways (considering I get premium products free). Gives them something to talk about.

Was given 2kg of good Tassie Smoked Salmon ($100RRP) 2 months ago, without even asking :-)

          (Used 3 $10 off $30 offers & got a $30 Woolies mobile pack for $1 just yesterday.)

Still a great price. Thanks for the deal & useful updates.
          Back to Woolies for me.

        • Yeah that's awesome. I had 3 varieties, 7 lamps all up so that would have brought the average price down to $1.42.
I actually don't shop there on Wednesday morning due to the yellow labels not being applied by then, however if there are specific things advertised it's always a great opportunity to score items for null cost!

  • I hope there are some cool whites when I check my woolies, I was scrumaging through my box of CFL's the other day (must have 30 or more) and they were ALL warm white except 1.All the CFL freebies over the years tended to be warm whites.

Anyway $2 is a good price for my favourite brand CFL. Thanks OP.

  • So did this turn out to be just one store or nationwide?

I think it was a system glitch. I spotted this deal (and only bought two globes) at a woolies yesterday and was going to post up the deal along with the woolworths online links (most Tornado links were $2). However I did not have access to a PC (woolies online site is even more user-unfriendly on my phone).
I went to two stores today and they all have 'normal' prices. I'll go back to the original store tomorrow, but I doubt it will be on sale as the online store has reverted back to normal prices.
I should have bought them online last night :(

      • +1

        Wow thanks for the report.

        • No worries. Will report back for further updates.
          Did you spot that today?
Congrats on the post! Beat me to it :)

        • @mmd:

Yeah spotted Thursday lunch time. Might go back today out of curiosity to see if they are still marked down.

        • @fatty:
So I went back to the store today, and lo and behold, the $2 tickets were still up. I grabbed as much as I could then headed to the counter like a madman.
I went to the counter with my stash, and my heart sank, as I saw $7.39 displayed on the till.
After I pointed out the price error, the attendant quickly removed the tickets. I was not able to purchase them for $2 unlike some lucky ozbargainers.

Woolworths is a big corporation and I thought they would have honoured the price (think of the toilet paper fiasco). However I think the timeline goes something like this.
Prior to 30/09: Human/system error meant that most Tornado globes were reduced to $2 Australia wide.
I think some tech person accidentally loaded the Tornado globe range at the same price as the Olsent $2 globes last week.
30/09: 'Promotion' goes live online (I saw most of the Tornado range was $2) and store staff printed out tickets. Stores that had adequate staffed numbers, placed the tickets up. Stores that were short staffed, wouldn't have the time to do it.
Woolies head office realise error and force price update which wouldn't apply until the 1st October.
01/10: Prices reverted back to normal, however the tickets are still up. The 2 stores I went to had no tickets, and the stock didn't look like it has been ozbargained (I dont think they put up tickets in the first place).

Now, how can I get Bunnings to price match? Cos 3 of my globes just blew :)

        • @mmd:
You didn't ask for 1 of each free under scanning policy :-( (recommended above) As shelf price was lower than scanned price, you can do that. After the free first one, will be full or price. Free bulb confirmed by OP

That was the best part of the bargain here - free bulbs (if they charge full price & shelf price is lower) ;-)

        • @Infidel:
No! I recalled your comment, but the attendant explained that I could get the first one free if I bought the second one for full price! I was running late so I couldn't be bothered arguing. haha

        • @mmd:
That's not what scanning policy states - naughty staff member :-(

Yes, freebies can take a little longer. Local supermarket staff know not to argue with me - they never win ;-)

Others state they use photos of price labels to price match a Bunnings!

I always take a photo in case of disputes - saves time of staff checking shelf price.

The Code of Practice for Computerised Checkout Systems in Supermarkets - never leave home without a copy ;-)

          The Multiple Purchase Policy
Where multiple items bearing identical bar codes, or the same PLU number, are scanned and the scanned price is higher that the shelf price, the customer is entitled to receive the first item free of charge and the remaining items at the lower price (that is, the shelf price).

When scanning error deemed to have occurred?
A scanning error shall be deemed to have occurred when an item has been scanned, or the correct PLU number entered, and a price higher than the shelf price is displayed at the checkout or on the customer receipt.

It is not necessary for the customer to have paid for the item or to have left the store to be entitled to receive the item free of charge.

    • I don't think the 20Ws are on special (now) . However I asked a passing staff member if the 20s were also $2 and he said they'd do them for $2 because they had $2 on them earlier in the day.

Don't know if he was expecting me to get 16 of them though! Cleaned em out of CW. I couldn't resist 74% off.

  • Big thumbs up to the OP!

Checked out Eastlakes NSW store and they had $2 tags on a few of the varieties. I've uploaded a pic of the tag for the E27 15W Warm White variety - http://tinypic.com/r/2e14sbl/8

However, the tag that's on promo does not match up with the barcode on the actual product they had on the shelf. As people have suggested, the $2 special tag is likely pointing to the older packaging product (which woolies didn't have on shelf) and so Woolies were unable to sell it at $2. I also tried Eastgardens NSW store and they didn't have any of the $2 tags on.

However, with the pic I took, I went over to Bunnings in Alexandria NSW and the girl at the counter was nice and quick with price matching the photo I showed her =)

Ended up buying 20 of them lol

I returned back to MacArthur Central CBD today to find that they had removed some, but not all of the yellow price labels so some lines were still available for $2.

    Picked up 9 x 15w BC (7 x Warm, 2 x Cool), normally $7.39.

Paid $16 all up, including one (but not two) complimentary under the scanning policy. That's $1.77 each, bargain!

Store manager then removed all the $2 labels on Philips Tornado.

I do have some close up photo's of the labels which could come in handy for price matching at Bunnings.

    • I had a similar experience today at my local WW. Picked up the last few 12W BC Warm Whites which were marked at $2 but scanned at $7.39. Thanks OP!

  • Robina still have $2 labels today.

  • Alas, no $2 price tags today at 2 Brissie Woolies :-(
Wasn't that desperate for bulbs to make a special trip.

Did pick up a $2 ("save $15.79") 4pack of 14W ES Cool White Olsent CFL. (800lm, packed for Woolies)
Certainly not Philips quality, but cheap & bright!
