NetGear Arlo HD Multi Camera Security System - 1x $245, 2x $268, 3x $501 Inc Post @ Wireless1

240
CLICK15

EDIT 2: Major development! Price for the 2 camera bundle just dropped from $435 to $375, or $268 after CLICK15 and cashback, and includes bonus item as below! Thanks VIVh for the co-spotting

Good evening fellow ozbargainers! Struggling to think of what to use your last CLICK15 transaction on?

I have been itching to get the Arlos for a few months now but was holding back due to pricepoint when comparing against the cost in US (yes, I miss the good old days of parity)!

For those of you who don’t know much about the Arlos, these are IMHO currently one of the best fully wireless security cams out there. These have only been mass stocked in AU for a few months hence very little movement on price from local retailers. The product page can be found here and it has received great reviews from CNet, Gizmodo, PCMag, TomsGuide, TechRadar, Amazon and others.

What makes this deal even sweeter is that in addition to the eBay 15% off deal, depending on the number of cameras, you also get $50 cashback from Netgear and/or some freebies being bundled with the deals:

Spent some time comparing prices and observed this:
- 1 camera system: W1 had the cheapest one on eBay, the other 1 camera sets are ‘add on’ versions which will require the base station so don’t pick those up unless you already have an Arlo set
- 2 camera system: Shopping Express, Sydney Tech and Futu all have this set listed at $435, but none include the bonus stuff which can probably be resold for around $50 - I’m thinking of gifting the Bluetooth speaker for mate’s bday.
- 3 camera system: The actual 3 camera bundle from Netgear carries a $75 cashback, but the cheapest one I could find was $801 inc post or $626 after CLICK15 and $75 cashback. From what I can see, the Wireless1 bundle above contains a standard 2 camera set, and they have added a standalone unit to it, which makes it essentially the exact same system as a 3 camera unit, but $125 cheaper (please let me know if I am missing something extra that would be only in the standard 3 camera set as I am guessing here).

While these things are rated to run 4 to 6 months on batteries, I would recommend picking up a rechargeable set of CR123A’s. Fellow ozbargainers are discussing this very point here

Lastly, the $50 cashback from NetGear will be by way of a $50 Visa prepaid card. Form here and terms and conditions here

Personally I am sitting here tossing up between the 2 and 3 camera kits and will probably pull the trigger at 11:55pm.

I currently have a 3 x Stem Izon 2.0 setup and for the most part it works quite well, especially after updates to the camera firmware and IOS app. However nightvision (or lack thereof) leaves a lot to be desired. I know there is an Izon View which has pseudo night vision but I was unimpressed with the results and promptly offloaded it on eBay. The resolution, image quality, and frame rate were simply not justified in the asking price of poorly implemented night vision. In fact if anything I thought daytime vision was actually better on my Izon 2.0s.

Hope you guys find this post useful. Took a while to put together but then again I’m just killing time till midnight deciding on which to buy… 2 camera or 3 camera? Either way, will try to post up a small review here of how these beauties go.

Original CLICK15 deal

EDIT 1: ok I'm an idiot. Just realised CLICK15 ends tomorrow midnight not tonight, so going to sleep on which one to get haha! Thanks mods for updating expiry date.

  • good post op. I've just started looking at putting on a home cctv system so apologies for the ignorance but just wondering if anyone can comment between this and Foscam, which I've heard of here and there as being a pretty decent wireless surveillance camera, which one would offer better images both daytime and nightime?

    • Mee too. Foscam are famous. And compatible with my synology nas

    • This battery operate cam hardly a security cam, may be for temperate use like building site is ok, but most likely lack of pre-record tho. For outdoor use will probably need to charge couple times a day

  • Can one add more cameras later on.
Thinking of buying the 2 camera deal.

Is this p2p camera technology or does it give access to camera?
    Would prefer the latter.

    • Yes you can add more. I'm in that dilemma too - get a 2 camera set and play with it (getting the add on later) or just get a 3 now at an overall cheaper price? Decisions decisions.

Re your second question, pretty sure it's the latter. EDIT: actually not sure about this!

      • +1

Easy decision that - get two of the 2 camera system and sell off the extras

        Total Cost = $435 * 0.85 * 2 = $740
        - 2x$50 cashbacks = $100
        - 2x128gb sticks (at $50 each) = $100
        - Sale of Spare Camera and Base station (effectively a 1 Camera System) $200
        = $340

        • I was thinking that too, but will need to get another person involved as:

          1. Netgear only allows 1 x $50 cashback per person and per address per the T&Cs; and
          2. CLICK15 only applies to a maximum of $100 per transaction so as soon as your total goes over $666 you no longer get the full 15% off.

Like the thinking though. Unfortunately I already have too much stuff sitting around which I purchased from ozbargain using that logic but never bothered to resell - most just get gifted on :)

        • Nice ;)

        • @ccrap: haha, same boat as you with the ozb purchases.

  • The 2 camera with Belkin Surge board also has a click and collect Big W & Wollies
Not the others, wonder why. Or just forgot to add that.

    • oh yeah, that's strange! They also have that option for the 3 camera one too but not the 1 camera. Maybe it comes from different locations?

  • If the camera are proper cameras unlike p2p (restrictive to the supplied software)
then I like these camera already

Would like to be able to port forward, add to TinyCam Pro (Android app)
& baby Monitor Pro (iOS same developer TinyCam Pro)

Anyone with the above cameras please post
If it has its own ip address & whether camera and its settings can be accessed via it.

    • Thought I read somewhere you could access cam direct but can't find that anymore so please don't take my word on that point (above comment! Hopefully someone here has experience doing this?

    • It doesn't work with other cameras. The cameras fire themselves up when they detect motion and send the video back to the base station, which connects to the Arlo server. That's how they are able to run from the batteries for long periods.

  • Could you use this system with a generic IP camera? The software looks pretty user friendly

  • +2

By the way guys, looks like the price on the 2 camera systems have been been lowered down to $375 from $435. This brings it down to $318.75 after the 15% discount and still includes the $50 cashback and the extras.

    • +1

Holy Guaca-friggin-moley! I just saw that when I went to see the model of that surge protector to work out if I needed it. Updating the deal now! Thanks.

Btw I"m definitely getting the 2 lots of the 2 cam version now :D

  • Thanks Op for the post. Was looking for something like this. Purchased the 2 camera pack with the bluetooth speaker.

  • 2 camera systems with bonus 128GB USB back to $435

    • This is the one I want!

Now waiting for the price to come back down again…

  • Was about to buy some but then found out everything has to be recorded to their cloud service, there is no option for local recording. So if there is a problem with your internet connection they wont work.

    • Whoa! Thanks for pointing that out.
      No deal for me then.
I thought it used local hdd & cloud

    • I remember reading on their forums there will be an update soon so you can also record to local hdd.

      • One of the review stated that zwave support will be coming. Is this still the case? I didnt see any other zwave article on these. Would love to have zwave integration as my cheap ipcamera(foscam ) has decided to end its life

      • The base has a couple of USB ports in it, which don't seem to do anything. They probably intend to allow you to record locally using those. The software was pretty raw when they released it so I would say they've got a lot of features planned that they may or may not implement.

        • Tech radar review above says. Base stations contain no storage themselves but can also be used to connect external USB storage devices for saving footage locally rather than the cloud, so having three of them lets you potentially connect up to six external hard drives. Each base station has five lights along the bottom to indicator power, internet, camera sync status, ethernet and USB.

    • Wow, nearly pulled the trigger on these. Been looking at them for ages, did not know this… Time to look for alternatives.

    • Decided to buy one anyway since it is so cheap. Got a best offer of $374 so saved an extra $1 😁

  • Damn! Another super enticing deal. I looked at these when they came late last year but simply couldn't justify the cost then. Decisions……

  • It looks good but here are the issues for me:
    1. no sound. It is really helpful to have sound when something you watch goes out of frame.
    2. cr123 batteries: cheap in the US, expensive here. Rechargeable Li-ion (16340) are available but run at a different voltage. Need to make sure the system will work ok on rechargeable. I have some and a good charger, but good rechargeables and charger will add $20-40.
    3. Only uses 2.4ghz: hopefully you are not in a congested area
    4. cloud service only, and monthly charges apply for better storage.
    5. Recording lag. From what I can tell, the system doesn't record until motion is detected. This results in significant lag between the first detection of motion in the image and video being recorded. My current system (wired) is always recording to buffer and when it senses motion it stores the video of 8 seconds before detection, until motion stops. Very useful. Not sure battery systems will cope. Ok if the field of view is such that the first few seconds don't matter.

Here is another review I read. Seems pretty good.
    http://www.wegotserved.com/2015/07/31/review-netgear-arlo-sm…
I am tempted for the price but it could go either way in the future: no support and dead dodo, or great support and expanded features.

    • I'm tossing up too but I think probably worth a punt for the 2 camera pack.

      On your points:
      2. Not sure how sensitive these are to battery voltage but 16340's are generally 3.7v, I believe there are rechargeable 123a's which are 3v.
      5. Unfortunately motion recording is the price to pay for battery operation. The bigger issue is the camera doesn't detect head on motion well so it limits the mounting options a fair bit.

      • I had a look at the community section on the arlo website and it seems 16340's work, provided they are good ones. Battery level monitoring doesn't work of course.

I agree it is a good price if you can live with the limitations.

  • If you buy 2x 2 camera package. You will only get 50 dollar instead of 100 dollar? Looks like you can only claim once

  • Thanks OP!

  • only the power-board 2camera unit is 375 now

  • Has anyones order shipped yet?

  • Submitted my redemption form and haven't heard anything from Netgear, not even a receipt confirmation. Anyone can advise of their experience?

    • same here, blindly waiting…

      • Called Netgear's 1300 line because the head office is hopeless at answering their phone let alone returning phone calls.

Apparently they are aware of the failure to notify. I'd say spending 10 minutes to get a case open to express your concern might be a good bet. The CSR in that I spoke to in Phillipines apparently forwards the case to the local AU office.

  • Offer limited to one claim per customer. The claim must be made on a correctly completed official claim form via the website (www.netgear.com.au/arlopromotion), be accompanied by an electronic copy of the receipt verifying purchase of the eligible NETGEAR product during the Promotion Period and a photo of the serial number on the bottom of the product (not the box) via the NETGEAR website.

Anyone else see that in the Terms and Conditions? Cant see anywhere in the form to attach a photo of the serial number.
Also the date format for the form is mm/dd/yyyy

    • Damn.totally missed the photo part. I'd resubmit it but I have a feeling they are not going to play nice.
