Thanks for letting us know but i wouldn't consider this when optus has the same but two extra days as well as data rollover

    • +1

Well said. I am happy with Amaysim on Optus.
It costs less than $20 per month per mobile for unlimited national calls, messages, 5GB 4g data, 50 international sms and 150 untimed international calls if you stock up on recharge vouchers during promotion and add $5 Pennytel freedom plan to share in the family.

I would only consider Vodafone when it pays me to use it.
Its indoor coverage in my local area is so poor and has no noticeable improvement in the last decade.

  • +26

Boykott Vodafone and other companies that have 28day renewals. The made a year have 13 months with their recharge practice

    • +1

OP, thanks for the post as I'm boycotting Optus. In Sydney CBD and inner west, their network is so overcrowded that it's like only having coverage for 20 days out of the 30.
In contrast, Vodafone's coverage in the areas that I live, work and commute is almost, but not quite, as good as Telstra.

Nice to learn that I'll get extra data if I stick with Vodafone.

    • +4

That's a good point. Sneaky way to add an extra month's charge.

  • +7

    Hi op,

good first post, i would argue that the $30 Optus pre-paid plan for unlimited calls, txt & 1.5Gb with unused rollover is probably more competitive. Its 30 for 30 days too, not just 28.

    • +1

I dont see where when i click to recharge it says the following on Optus…

      $30 recharge will give you:
      - unlimited standard national SMS, voice calls to Optus mobiles, and mobile access to Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, eBay and Foursquare
      - up to 250 minutes to be used for standard voice calls to national numbers and 23 selected countries,13/1800 numbers, and Voicemail (charged in per minute increments)
      - a total of $30 Credit
      - up to 500MB of data (Charged in 1kB blocks on the yesinternet access point (APN); 1MB blocks on other APNs. Check your phone's user guide for details on changing your APN.)

      ALL FOR USE WITHIN AUSTRALIA
Optus Mobile Fair GoTM policy applies.
Credit expires after 28 days or on your next recharge, whichever is the earlier

      • I feel Optus and Vodafone both (and quite possibly Telstra too) are ripping off pre-paid customers. Vodafone (since the old 3 days) used to have rollover of unused credit if you recharged by last day of cycle. Alas no longer. Must say though; the unlimited data and international calls on weekends for prepaid Vodafone customers ($30 plan and up) has been a firm favourite of late. Shame that ends this 16th (has been extended twice) so we may cut the prepaid recharge next month. Will have to evaluate on next recharge.

On an unrelated matter (although someone did diss Vodafone before) we have an excellent Vodafone 3 and 4G service in our area and areas we frequent. Surely anyone looking to change provider should check their own areas coverage first by picking up a prepaid sim.

Ripping off pre-paid customers by offering them much better deals than post-paid customers?

        • @Maverick-au:
Prepaid customers generally, shell out for their phones.

        • @daver:

Prepaid customers generally, shell out for their phones.

Contract plans also include BYO and the value is far greater in pre-paid plans even when you take into account the inflated value of the handset on contract plans that include a handset.

        • @Maverick-au:
There might be a void to fill for improved lock-in plan although those have not been my choice in a while.

        • @Maverick-au:

Same as I was wondering. I am on the $40 post paid plan for which I pay $35 as a long term customer.

Son is currently on the $30 prepaid option. I used to pay $20 for his recharges, but the free unlimited data and international calls on weekends (which were very appreciated) for $30+ recharges was the reason for the increase.

Actually I am not certain that the new $30 prepaid recharge would be better for him; he doesn't make that many calls or send that many texts, and uses wifi most of the time for data.

  • +1

What about the unlimited data weekend offer. This would surely trump data roll over atm?

    • +1

Only till this weekend unless extended.

      • Yes, applicable until 16th … but Vodafone has extended the final date twice already … hoping hoping!

    • that expires this coming sunday.

      • If they have any brains they will extend it.

        • Don't hold your breath though… don't see why they would introduce a better $30 cap and at the same time also extend unlimited weekend. Let's hope they do however.

        • @wildstone:
Well its the only reason im with them so if it stops i wont reload with them. I have optus as well so no big deal.

        • @paulaus:
Don't think they r extending. It's a promo they run every 6 months

  • +1

Not a great deal, Optus much more better and good coverage

    • +7

Have you tried the Vodafone network lately, with all the cheap sim cards about lately I've been bouncing between Optus, Telstra (and Boost), and Vodafone a lot lately so have had a great opportunity to compare. Vodafone are a very strong second to Telstra, in some cases out performing (coverage areas) Telstra, with Optus a very far behind third/last. YMMV, I travel a lot across the Newcastle and Hunter Valley and am quite happy on Vodafone across the entire area.

      • -1

Optus second to Telstra round stkilda and voda phone very patchy

        • -1

          voda phone

It's not like VodaFONE are new to Australia or anything!

      • Oh thats good to know. I've stayed on Telstra here in Newcastle but Voda was slowly catching up last time I looked. Might have to try them again.

        • Up Medowie/The Dam/Nelson Bay my Telstra (work) phone would loose reception so I'd pick the call back up on my Vodafone device (Both are late model 4G Handsets). Similarly up the hunter. It's not perfect but I certainly don't complain about the few places it does let me down at.

        • @dewy: Thanks, dewy :)

    • It blankets metro, rides Optus for regional, I'm aware. So, the comment is demented.

Vha wont do anything with weekend data, that popular and helps it provision. Good its finished changing the date around might end some uncertainty.

  • Optus also a $10 off deal if you have a broadband connection with them. I am still on a contract, but I plan to change to the $30/month, 1 GB, Unlimited calls and text Sim-Only plan. I get $10 off, so that's $20 a month. :D

  • +1

    nvm ..

    • Um … nvm. Eh?

  • Good on Optus introducing unlimited calls and text on the $30 prepaid plan last month

Vodafone is just playing catch up to stay competitive.

    Now Telstra needs to respond….

    • If i am not wrong. I saw similar plan for telstra prepaid at a local woolworths last night.. Will recheck today and confirm.

      • Telstra offering unlimited calls on $30 prepaid. That would be awesome.

  • Shit, what does this mean for us buying favourites packs with the $450 cap credit?

    • I bought 6 of those.. uh oh.

      • Same shite
Asked the Q on whirlpool http://whrl.pl/RenfKz

      • I have 5 of these left. I go through all my calls about once every 3 months, anywhere up to a week before, resorting me to pop in the next prepaid.

      • +2

Explains why they were clearing the old stock! I assumed you would get the new offer, i doubt vodafone code the sims to recognize the old deal…a $30 starter pack is a $30 starter pack!

      • derp Favourite packs have -not- been purchasable from starter packs for well over one Y3AR. The deal's been strictly recharge of that bonus (retired). Pay a lot more than silly start kits for it too.

        • Really? I bought a favourites packs just now -_-

        • @Food:
          Using pre-existing (recharge) account/
          Any alternate discussion or evidence?
I get- http://three.net.au/VFPacksPasses/Home/Error for my 2 week starter while old sims process fine.

        • +1

@daver: YEs, using a pre-existing sim, sorry for any confusion

        • +1

@Food: I just bought some Favourites Pack on a $40 cap. Existing old grandfathered SIM. Although, I think next time I'll change to Telstra 4GX. $140 for 280GB, 2 yrs expiry, or $50 for 100GB, 1 yr expiry.

Only reason I would use Vodafone is for free weekends.

Carrier Aggregation (4GX) makes a big difference to speed on phones and mobiles that support it.

        • +1

@futaris: I only caught wind of Nicois' $10Ctrl-40GB winback plan very recently (iPad $3 GB packs changed and from that I defected to vodafone ages ago) .
But i'm still optimistically hoping Vodafone could up the ante to a free data nights bonus rather than just status quo or shrivel up, although the match to Optus must keep it relevant.

    • +1

but this is called a 'prepaid combo' hopefully the 'prepaid cap' will still continue

  • +1

Cannot find any other mobile plan that offers INFINITE calls to selected countries for that price - IMO the best deal for International Callers and Broadband ain't bad either!

  • +1

Wish the current "free weekend data" would be extended instead.

    • +2

Agreed. I think they run that promo every 6 months

    • If they were do a Six monthly campaign I wouldn't mind a one called Data Nights: Voice is old to many and this would up 48 hours per week to 84h.
      keep it to fone hotspots.

  • +1

Here I was thinking unlimited calls (within limits) was simply amazing but boy was I underestimating those telcos: now we can have INFINITY calls (within er … finite?).

Infinity ((within er … finite?) is obviously better than unlimited (within limits).

    • I always wonder where the infinite ends and the "reasonable usage" clause comes in … yet to be realised yet though.

  • +1

I am also thinking change to a prepaid deal now. But don't think this deal is a good choice. please advice if i am wrong

Compare to the old deal, don't think the 'infinite call and txt' would include international calls. So it's not a better deal than the old one with $450 can be used for international calling. Now the international call if you need would cost you much much more because vodafone's international call rate start from over $1.00/min plus connection fee.
Compare to Optus, Optus has data roll over up to 10GB. Optus gives you $5.00 extra credits for international calls and their international call rate starts from 2c/min and no connection fee. It equal to 250 minutes to a few popular countries.

    • +1

It really depends if you want international calls. Personally I prefer unlimited national calls so this deal is good for me but paying $30 a month seems outrageous given these sims go on sale every month! I wouldn't pay more than $15 for a sim card.

I have been on prepaid for 2 months now and i don't think I will ever get back into a contract

    • I finally have untethered my International minutes from any national sim card deals. Happily.Skype.Premium (closed:jan2015) supply 300 call minutes pm mobiles of 50 countries++au., early bird catches the worm. Paid to 2018 !
international no pull for me, nor any unappealing commit.

  • What is this total BS with the 28 days in a month that Telstra, Vodafone, Optus etc. have introduced.
Just because one month of the year is 28 days, doesn't mean it extends to the other eleven months.
I'm still on an old 30 day pre-paid offer, but I'm waiting for Telstra to shaft me down to a new one

    • -2

Agrees wholeheartedly … and miss the unused credit rollover too. Would be fun if there was a legal challenge on the 28 day issue and it was ruled illegal. Murphs Law.

      • +2

Agrees wholeheartedly … and miss the unused credit rollover too. Would be fun if there was a legal challenge on the 28 day issue and it was ruled illegal. Murphs Law.

You were just complaining further up that the three networks were ripping everyone off by not offering unused credit rollover so which one is it? Either they have it or they don't.

And on what grounds would there be a legal challenge on the "28 day issue" and on what grounds would a commercial decision be found to be illegal? And what on earth does Murphy's law have to do with this?

"Murphy's law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong."

I cannot see how this saying can fit this situation!

        • Both:

I do agree they are ripping customers off by not applying unused credit rollover (like they used to).

Further agree the 28 days cycle is a rip off when it used to be 30 days.

Commercial decisions have been ruled illegal in the past and retributions made. Commercial decisions therefore fly in the face of Murphys Law. A rip off is a rip off, but some do come undone.

  • +1

Thanks OP, although the timing of this new plans makes me think we'll see the end of free data weekends.

    • Value would get better over time, so far SMS/ MMS have stuck, National voi e is next so who knows.

  • So we don't get any credit ? So can't do international calls then..?
    Optus seems better.

    • Compare Lebara 2+2GB data HSPA+ ±$10 optional rates int., postp Voda net.

  • -2

Hilarious, vodafail. You want quality you want Telstra. Which network will congest and fall over first? Hint, hint.

    • Actually Vodafone (broadband) did offer free unlimited data on 2 weekends Australia wide not too long ago (many reported speeds and data used on this site); the broadband network did not fail.

  • +1

They offer unlimited call internationally which is something nobody else offers and they bumped up the data to 4Gb. Nice.

  • After having used vodafone, telstra and optus exclusively last few months. For Brisbane I would go in this order. Telstra, optus and then vodafone. I actually think vodafone are by far the worst network. I actually find their data unusable in many many places, and pathetic. And 28 days is not even a month.

  • +1

(According whether the OP's start date is right) there hasn't been any news from Vodafone regarding the new plan, for something meant to be starting in 3 days

  • can confirm that the new plan is being launched on the 19/08/2015.

    • So, what happens to the current $30 starter kits ? It clearly states on the pack 1GB with $450 credit.

I prefer the $450 funny money that comes with it.

      • +1

The current $30,$40,$50 cap plans will be grandfathered. If you want 1GB + $450 credit, you will have to get the new $30 prepaid combo.

        • That means after 19/08/2015 any new activation, regardless of the starter pack will be put on the new plan ?

        • +1

@CoolMJ: Nope. If u're activating a cap plan, then you're on a cap plan. Activate the new combo plan, you'll be on the combo plan… At least that's what I've been told.

        • @Jar Jar Binks:

Thanks, that sounds better. Having the choice to activate on Cap plan or Combo makes more sense.

        • +1

          @CoolMJ:

If you've bought a combo starter, then you'll be on the combo plan.

If you've bought a cap starter, then you'll be on the cap starter.

        • A big phew if that's right RE the cap plans staying.
Didn't want to lose my great $10/ 10GB/ 2 months deal!

        • +1

just tested out with one of the cheap starter kit that i brought.
no option to choose cap plan from now
didn't try on phone but i guess it will be the same which need to be confirm
that sucks as i use that 450 money mainly for oversea calls as i don't do much local calls
the new plans ripped me off
now ill just focus on buying telstra to port in and out as the value are better with the 30 (creditme2u) + cap credit which can be use to ring oversea
but damn i still got about 6 vodafone starter kit left lol

        • @jang:

Send a blank SMS to 1512, it should reply with full details of your plan (cap or combo).

        • @CoolMJ:
          cheers mate
          will try that out
probably use up alll my vodafone for the following 6 months before they take out that option

  • ta

  • +2

    FYI
I just ported my number over, you have the choice of the old cap or the new combo to use.

  • Bit more data if recharged online, ie $30 prepaid charged online is 2GB not 1.5GB now. I only receive 500mb on my Red $40 plan that I pay $35 for.

    • Update: Vodafone has now advised two new post paid plans also. Yet to decide whether to sign up for another two years (some free mobiles with plans too such as Galaxy 4). Some attractive enticements like shared data/calls over mobiles on same account.

  • I think this is the best offer if you call overseas, especially to one or more in this countries list..China, India, USA, UK, NZ, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and South Korea
