Audiosonic 7" Tablet for $17 @ Kmart [Parramatta Westfield, NSW]

350

Single core rockchip processor
512MB ram
7" screen and low resolution
Android 4.1
Micro SD card slot

Black for $17 and pink for $25. Maybe at other Kmart stores too.

I was not expecting much from this tablet but its pretty nice tablet for your little one. Don't expect any multitasking from this device. Screen looks ok and experience is not smooth. But its still very useable device.

The perfect stocking stuffer that will soon turn into a closet stuffer but at $17 I guess it's not the worst investment.

Surprisingly these costs less than $5 to manufacturer and they make a very, very good paperweight.

    • where did you get $5 from?

what differentiates these vs a raspberryPI?

      • A video of a factory that produces an Allwinner equivalent, but production ceased about 2 years ago. The quad core Allwinner A33 only costs $4 and the Intel Atom's found in the cheap Windows tablets only cost $5. Everything is cheap when mass produced and sold in thousands of units.

        • im interested in this stuff do you have a link to the video? you mean allwinner is out of business?

@furythree: Nah the tablets with the A13 chip are out of production.. You'd never be able to buy a tablet at the manufacturing price, but you could pick up a basic quad core for $25 each… if you buy 1000 :P

Here is a video of a factory tour of a company that made the A13 tablet. This manufacturer provides OEM tablets to the big chains of America (Walmart, Target etc). I wouldn't be surprised if they made the Audiosonic ones too.

        • The Allwinner chips are cheap, yes, but do you realize the SoC is a single part of the tablets? You have the rest of the components on the PCB (and the PCB itself), the battery, the display, the chassis, the housing. And we're just counting the raw parts and not considering the machining involved, the labor for design, assembly and QA, the packaging, the shipping, and so on.

Also curious as to where you found the Atom Z3735X series SoCs selling for just $5. Last time I checked they were ~$17 with a bulk order price of ~$14.

@ausmechkeyboards: Yeah, I'm aware of that. The Allwinner A13 is a very old and discontinued chipset. $10 is probably a more accurate price to actually assemble it. The chipset is well below $5 though and I'm not saying the whole tablet costs that much to develop ;)

The Intel Atom's are starting at $5 for manufacturers. Intel is intentionally selling these at a loss, just like how Microsoft gives away the Windows 8.1 license out for free if the tablet is under 9 inches.

Good enough as a photo frame

For $17 I think there might be some validity in that sentiment.

K-Mart Burwood (VIC) had the Dual-core KitKat version of this tablet on clearance for $25. So I picked one up. I was prepared for a horrible low res screen and lots of lag so that really didn't bother me. What did bother me was the utterly horrendous viewing angle. I'm not talking about what happens when you angle the tablet away to some significant degree, but the fact that it's barely possible to avoid the issue when looking at it straight on. It's hard to articulate precisely what I mean but I think it's probably safe to say that most people will find it unacceptable even for the clearance price point.

Aside from all that the particular sample that I picked up had already been opened and used for long enough for it to acquire some smudges and scratches so it's going back (it wasn't labeled as returned stock).

Still, this will probably do for your kids or whatever other low-demand application you might have in mind.

  • i would not use this for any kind of entertainment. seriously would not even give it to a 7 yr old. words cant describe how much junk this is

my kid has an ipad mini

they think a nexus 7 II doesnt hold up so this pile of shit? throw in in the bin… or spend $17 on a meal instead of this shite

      • +4

Hey Kanye, hope North is loving HIS iPad mini.

      • +1

So what? That's like me saying my young one plays PS3/4 games on the Xperia tablet and wouldn't even look at an iPad, so you should've spent that $500 on food/their school fees.

Everything has their targeted consumers. If this is completely useless to everyone they would not be manufacturing it in the first place.

I can see parents putting simple games/Youtube videos on to their toddlers entertained.

  • Could be good for IP camera monitoring perhaps?

    • +1

      No

    • IP camera monitoring actually needs a reasonable amount of CPU power and RAM, particularly if you are going to record and use motion capture.

A picture frame as someone suggested, but a picture frame needs a good viewing angle.

  • My Grandma got one of these last year. It can work while plugged in, but it's slow, and the battery life is under ten minutes. And I've seen numerous news reports that say we should not use these types of devices while they are charging because of the fire hazard. Not sure that all of these are the same, but… not going to suggest this for anyone.

  • very useable

Nothing in your description indicates that.

    • It's not best device but it's still useable because you can still watch online videos on it, play most games and apps. There is bit of stutter but it's bearable. Most things work as intended with with minor slowdowns or stutter.

  • Would this work as a netflix remote for chromecast?

    • My guess would be yes, but are you sure you want a 7" remote…

      • +4

Good point. I'll hold out for a 10"

        • +1

          That's what she said.

  • Sold out only pink ones left

    • Marked as expired. Thanks.
