Telstra Cruise $10 @ Harvey Norman

620

Remember when phones were phones? When phones had keyboards? Now with MS killing Nokia ZTE has stepped in. Touch over 9 days battery life with light usage - verified with the one I currently have. No GPS, no wireless, but it does come with email if you are drunk and feeling brave. All on a tiny 2" colour screen at a svelte 70g. Seems to be a permanent price. Perfect for Telstra long life - 6 month prepaid for $30 as of this post.

Firstly, I wish you would write copy for the Telstra phones, this was hilarious. However, I do have one quibble here. As someone who is old enough to have been around, but not rich enough to have owned, one of the original "brick" phones, the display, camera and mp3 player are only something we could have dreamed of back then.

How much would cost to unlock?

  • my era's mobile phones had the size liked esky.

  • Used something like this, a tiny little Nokia 4 digit something model, a little while back as my smartie was out of commission. The experience was so jarring LEL I think we really look back at the Nokia era with rose tinted glasses.

    • The experience was so jarring

      In what way?

I have a Nokia C5 old school one and a Lumia 635. I switch between the 2 with no dramas.
Sometimes I even get better reception with the old Nokia.
I can even use it as a 3G modem for my laptop.

Only jarring I get is if the USB socket is too tight.

      • I've lost the ability to touch type on the old T9 keypad for E. G

Imagine trying to compose email on a T9 keyboard, would take ages if you're not used to the lack of predictive text.

SwiftKey has dumbed my skills down.

        • I actually got quite used to the 3 letter per number typing and can type quicker on that than a regular keyboard.
My fat fingers have never really come to grips with the new touch screens.

I must admit, swiftkey or swipe or whatever on the touch screen Windows phones is pretty nifty though I'm trying to stick to standard typing so I don't lose whatever typing skills I have.

      • Everything was slow. It took non-trivial amounts of button presses to do much eg. "apps" button (forget what they call that) -> my apps -> 3 directional presses because only 6 shortcuts can fit on a screen etc.

        Just … tedious.

        • Fair enough. I pretty much only use the calendar and internet with mainly a few bookmarks on the old Nokia.
I have my main "apps" on the bar at the top of the homepage. You can fit 5 shortcuts plus another 2 hotkey buttons at the top of the keyboard.

I suppose for anything else, you do have to drill down a few menus to get to various settings etc.

  • I think most people have one of these as a "spare" phones but never actually use them.

    • I've got 4 spare android + 1 spare blackberry reasons to never need one.

    Telstra locked..forget it..

    • can be easily unlocked guys.

  • I remember this phone from a previous post. I am pretty sure the OP is serious that everyone should stop using modern smartphones and start using this phone.

    • +3

INDEED. Such a refreshing product. When a phone really is a phone.

  • This was my first mobile… the Nokia 1610 brick.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_1610

Wiki is wrong btw… it didnt come standard with a NiMh battery. It was definitely a NiCad (the NiMh was something I upgraded to 12m later).
Single colour green screen with two lines of text, pull out aerial (which did nothing to increase reception), and I had an awesome red leather case for it too.

I was rocking this bad boy in 1996 selling 486Dx and Pentium 100's in David Jones computer department.

Under 20yo and at the height of my popularity :).

    • Wiki is wrong btw

      NO WAY!

You do understand that you can edit the wiki to fix it, right?

      • In theory you can.

In reality, anything you change is immediately reverted and you need to argue your case to someone who has little to no knowledge of the subject but spends all their time arguing with people on Wikipedia.

Your comment is a stub. Maybe you should expand it to a full rant? ;)

  • 3 hours talk time.

    • Name one person who talks on a mobile for 3 long hours? 30min is pushing it. Is it a conversation of your life story with the full orchestra?

      • +1

only if you gf is very talkative and you dont want to upset her. Otherwise you might not get any sex for a whole week lol

        • @Diji1: Exactly. Not a gender thing at all.

      • Spoken numerous times for almost that long and I have had the mobile on call to a tech from Germany to get their blasted machine to work for over an hour.

If it had a full qwerty keyboard I would be on it hard.

I have a note 2 I use daily but if it didn't need the apps and ability of it I would go back to my nokia e72 e5 combo.

And for you going kids yeh hardware keyboard

  • If only it were a flip phone.

  • +1

I use these phones for my kids. They can call/message me and I can call them. They cant do anything else or cost me money. They aren't teens yet, so there is that.

its mostly a 'just in case' phone, if they miss the bus or need picking up. $20 recharge for 6 months, or whatever it is (cheap anyway) plus - the major bonus - you only have to charge them every weekend and so they are always working. Forget the cheap smart phones that require charging every day, that will be forgotten on the day that the phone is actually needed

Although by 'these phones' I mean 'old candy bar' phones, not these particular ones. They are quite hard to find nowdays

    • +1

Look into an Amaysim sim card mate. You only pay as you use, and you'll probably save money (instead of giving Telstra $20 every 6 months for nothing).

$5 start credit for 90 days, then you can set it up to auto top up as you go (credit or debit, set and forget). That $20 you give to Telstra will get you a whole year with Amaysim (they use Optus for coverage). No frills and relatively expensive per call, but for once off calls in an emergency for kids its perfect.

      • Yeah, been using Amaysim for a few people that need emergency only access, 12c is the minimum spend every 90 days.

      • thanks - checking it, I'm using a $15 per 6 months with Virgin, but the kids spend around $5-8 over that 6 months. So it might save a few dollars.

    • Yes good for that. Want and need are two different things.

    • +1

Here;s an idea for you - unlock it and get an ALDI SIM for $5 for 360 days…just a thought

  • +2

Anyone knows if I can use Aldi sim with it?

    • Not by default - you'll need to unlock it

  • +1

I still have an old Nokia like this which still has good battery capacity. I used to put it to good use as a clock alarm as I don't trust that power does not go off in the night for the bedside clock radio, making me late for important work. The annoying things about new smart phones are that their alarms don't work unless you leave the phones on. I normally turn off my Nokia 1520 phone at night unless it requires recharging (which is only every 3-4 days).

Though since I have bought myself a solar G-shock, that has become my alarm as I am not as concerned re using the power off the battery.

    Cheers.

    • i keep alarm on my note 4 and keep it in offline mode.

      • +2

Hmmm… never thought about that. Have to give this a try and see how much battery is used overnight in flight mode (whereas the old Nokia phone used to need a recharge every 3-4 weeks just being used as an alarm).

        Cheers.

        • It is stupid when you need to have the phone switched on for the alarm to work

  • i belive coles have the voda prepaid handset for $9 saving of $30 which is android touch screen device.

  • Is this unlock? Or do I need to be with Telstra?

    • Not unlocked you need to do that

  • Does this get good rural coverage?

  • +5

Telstra Cruise… The name of Tom's next kid?

    • Sounds like a good name for a baby scientologist

  • Acatel onetouch 2052 for $9, locked to vodafone, unless anyone can unlock them?

  • its a good disposable phone for me… and also good as an MP3 player… just need a new micro SD card. I picked mine up at Coles for the same price.

  • I want a phone to use as an alarm and not have to have it turned all night for it to work. Will the alarm work if this phone is off?

    • +1

There are a lot of alarm clocks you can get for $10 #justsayin

  • Did I donate $10 to Hardley Normal as a gift?

Got the receipt and a message they'd email the invoice and notification to pick up.

    Since then, nothing, nada….
