  • Looks interesting. Could be good for those apps that still dont have chromecast support (e.g. nearly all tv station catchup apps)

Chromecast is far less capable. No idea why you even mention it in comparison.

      • It is because of the existing software which is already compatible with chromecast.

        • I am not criticising chromecast - I have one. But devices like these are far more capable and serve a different market That's why I was querying the comparison.

      • Trying to decide whether I need this if I already have forked out for a Chromecast and have plex etc working well.

  • Good find. It would be good/better if it came with a matching remote control. I know you can use a smartphone app, wireless keyboard/mouse, etc. but I like to also have a dedicated remote control for convenience/simplicity and the partner, oldies, etc. Feel free to please suggest a good/easy to use cheap one, thanks.

  • It does have a remote,
A K400 Logitech is great for all these boxes.

  • It works as a remote OK,
as mentioned K400r Logitech is the go.

  • Is Hulu and Netflix apps on this,if not can they be put on this?

    • Not that I can see, easy to install.

    • Netflix will be limited to 720P on this, I expect Hulu would be the same.

Just to warn everyone, this device only plays HEVC/H265 in 8bit only.

A lot of hevc content these days is coming out in 10bit HEVC/h265 and this device won't be able to play it.

    Have a look here http://kodi.wiki/view/Android_hardware

Also for devices like these you might have some issues with Android, I had issues with audio latency and a few similar personally.

That was all fixed with installing openelec, however openelec doesn't support all devices.

    • Oh, thanks. Is this still very capable/good ignoring 4K HEVC/H.265? Issues with Android and audio don't sound good (pardon the pun :-)

      • Considering devices that can do 10bit cost more then this its a good deal.

Personally I would never buy a device like this without choosing a model that can run something else on it like openelec though. You could also dualboot with android and something else.

  • Can this stream movies from a shared drive from a router?

Kodi 14.2 is installed on this Box and is working ok
      also Plex, looking good

      Excellent find

    • OH NO DOES NOT WORK THOUGHT IT DID BUT CHANGES ANOTHER PRICE
Edit: it does work but not for this deal - so sorry

      • so which deal does it work for?

        • Anything that isn't already on sale.

        • @Clear: cheers

  • How is this compared to this more expensive 64bit box? Wonder if I overpaid for the 64bit one.

    • I was just wondering the same thing. I bought the Tronsmart too.

  • I have a couple of Android boxes with similar specs. Whilst they generally do 1080p OK when streaming videos from a local server, Kodi does not, for whatever reason. Also, the rendering of live TV from my mythtv based server is awful via kodi on the android media players. So, if you are thinking of getting it because of Kodi, you might be disappointed.

    • Can you be more specific? Kodi is what these things live for. What did kodi have trouble with? What sort of "local streaming" worked - a built-in player app?
What myth trouble ? I've seen the automatic de-interlace not happen, and had to manually turn it on.

Kodi would be the reason to buy this. Netflix on Android is not great -use chromecast etc for that.

Great price, especially with the remote included. It looks OK for Kodi. I don't like air-mice.

Can anyone tell me if the s/pdif 5.1 works properly with Kodi on these? (Netflix is stereo only).

        The matter had been covered before when discussing low end android media players, but in the main;

        • in the settings of the android box it is usually possible to set screen resolution. The two (actualy 3, but I can't get one to work at all) I have let you set the screen to 1080p. The android video players generally render accordingly.

I am running Kodi isengard on both. Neither lets you select a display resolution. Only "windowed" and full screen is available. Full screen is definitely not 1080p, and I reckon not even 720. It's a fuzzy washed out display. It gets worse when watching live TV using the mythtv pvr plug in (I have a dedicated Mythtv 0.27 dedicated backend server with a number of tuners). SBS HD is particularly bad when played on Kodi on either of the android players.

The Kodi wiki offers this advice:

It is highly recommended for users to not make any purchases in anticipation of running Kodi on Android without first researching the device you want to buy. Before you do buy, make sure multiple people have verified that it works! If in doubt, do not buy that hardware!

There's a fair bit of discussion around, so I'm still fiddling. But essentially, Kodi android does not seems to have a screen resolution setting, probably making an auto-determination based on the available hardware info.

Interesting. I just tried Kodi on the low-cost mk808b+ (S805 SoC), and it does appear to use a 720p framebuffer, even when set to 1080p output signal.
I think that may well be a limitation of the ROM I installed (Finless) which must reflect hardware limits, I suppose?
The text on the desktop and overlays is clearly not 1:1 pixel mapped.

However, the video quality was still great, and no trouble decoding 1080p mkv files that I tried. Nothing fuzzy or washed out. No trouble with Mythtv, except I'm reminded of the general poor quality of free-to-air in Australia these days :-( (Too many shopping channels squeezed in.)
The video quality is indistinguishable from raspberry pi or PCs. - unless I freeze-frame a 1080p video and scrutinise closely. I did not try any super-high bit rate rips.

So I'd say the Amlogic S805 SoC is one of the good ones.

It does not seem surprising that Kodi lacks display res settings, and leaves that to the system settings.

I will admit I struggle greatly to distinguish between 720p and 1080p if the bitrate is sufficient. (Definitely a 4K skeptic.)

  • do these have apps for greek tv?

  • Since this only comes with an US or EU plug. Where can I get an Australian power plug? Can this product run apps like Stan, Presto, Quickflix and Netflix smoothly?

    • Australian power adaptors are available at places like Dick Smith, Jaycar and Altronics. Take the foreign adaptor with you, and usually one of the staff members will be able to help you. Expect to pay about $25-$40.

  • +2

As was suggested to me a while back, get an "international" adaptor. Works for me.

    • For something that is going to be left powered 24 hours a day, I'd rather have an adaptor that has Australian compliance markings. Australia's testing laws are more strict than a lot of other countries, and you are risking burning down your house and killing all the occupants.

It might be a small risk, but it's not one I want to take when the stakes are so high.

  • Quick question. The pic for this deal states that the box has an aerial input. Is this correct? Can it decode DigitalTV signals? The product pics also don't show anywhere where an aerial could be connected for DigTV. Can someone who has one of these attest to the fact that it can be used to watch FTA digitalTV?

    Cheers.

    • Aerial is for wifi. You need a DVB dongle. Plenty for sale at gearbest. Note the mini aerial included is probably useless in australia. You want a roof-top one.

      • what does a DVB Dongle do?

        • Also known as a "Digital TV tuner" USB stick.

DVB is the digital encoding system used for digital TV in Australia. More precicely, DVB-T, where the "T" is for "Terrestrial", i.e. "on the ground". There is also a DVB-S system for satellite broadcasts.

        • @Russ: i read some descriptions on ebay..
arent these useless with all the features tv's have nowadays or do these add something extra?

        • +1

          @Hirolol:

Depends on how smart your TV is. Can your TV record an entire season of a program for you, even if the timeslot of the program changes from week to week?

Personally, I'd take one of these with a "dumb" tv in preference to a "smart" tv. I recall a lot of people were rather annoyed recently when Youtube changed from Flash video to (HTML5?), and the Youtube app on their smart TV stopped working, and then they found that their TV was non-upgradeable. That sort of problem doesn't occur as much with a separate set-top box, and if it does, it only costs about $50 to fix the problem with a new set-top box.

Compare that to the $$$$ to change to a newer-model "smart" tv.

        • @Russ: Oh wow, this sounds pretty good then.
the change youtube made from flash could be the reason why my youtube on my Sony tv stopped working… well it plays about 10mins then stops.

Thank you for the information. Very Helpful indeed!

          @Hirolol:

Actually, I think I got a bit mixed-up. I was thinking of MythTV with the "record whole season" bit, I have no experience with KODI or XBMC. Wouldn't surprise me if they can do the same, but YMMV.

    • There is no no Wifi aerial its internal, not confusing dc in ?

    • There is no aerial.

FYI: This is a fake Beelink.

Gearbest (noone else) is selling it as a Beelink, but the company makes no such product, and there is no beelink name or logo on the item.

    Info found here and confirmed:
    http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-support/allwinner-tv-pla…

    Genuine Beelink website here: http://www.bee-link.com/index.html
The P1, P2 and M808 at Gearbest appear genuine.

But lots of good info on the X2 in the above freaktab thread.
