Really I think we should be calling them the "Paperwhite Gen. 2" and "Paperwhite Gen. 3" to avoid confusion. The model labelled "NextGen" is actually the obsolete model.

    • Yepp, got excited at first as well

    • That is Amazon marketing spin, that company that patented '1-click' puchase.

      • +2

They are ill advised names, like New iPad and New 3DS.

        • After the naming disaster that was the "Wii U", the "New Nintendo 3DS" comes along… come on Nintendo…

        • @Symbiotic: New Wii U in 2016, confirmed.

    • Thanks for that, I've updated the title for those who are unfamiliar with Kindle.

  • noob question, is the paperwhite able to receive emails?

  • I've got a well used first-gen Paperwhite and am trying to decide if the lovely new screen is worth the upgrade to a third generation Paperwhite (or for the same screen, flat bezel and hardware buttons in the Kindle Voyage)

  • +1

I reckon the 3rd gen is a much better value than voyage. Have never used the 1st gen but I have the 2nd gen, and after reading some reviews I decided it wasnt worth the upgrade..

    • I think I agree about relative value between 3gPW and Voyage given they have the exact same screen panel, but the hardware buttons do strike me as useful.

AFAIK, the 1G and the 2G had the same screen panel but the 2G has a slightly bluer backlight and a significantly better processor (so better refresh rate). All the same, the upgrade is somewhat incremental, so not necessarily justifiable on its own.

      • +3

The 2nd gen has an eink carta display, whereas the 1st gen has pearl, which has lower contrast.

  • Can't find anywhere to click & collect the NextGen model; get's greyed out on checkout page, is it just me?

  • Just bought the '3rd gen'. Thanks op!

  • +3

Just bought my upgrade, whether or not you agree with some of DSE's business practices, this is stellar price for the latest model. Thanks for the post

    • For those wondering, "Kindle Paperwhite High Resolution 300PPI Display WiFi" is the just released 2015 model.

I've tried both the new Kindle Paperwhite 2015 and the Kindle Voyage. My personal choice is definitely the Voyage, and it was by a mile for me. There were a couple of big drawbacks with the 2015 Paperwhite - the screen looked overly yellow/sepia (worse than my Gen 1 Paperwhite), and this yellowness seemed to reduce the contrast and clarity and make it seem less sharp than the older Paperwhites. And the final deal breaker was the front light, which for me was still nowhere near even over the screen, especially in darkness. You can clearly see the LED lights at the bottom of the panel (and the resulting uneveness in the lighting on the screen) and the light was not even across the entire reading display. Overall I was very dissapointed in the 2015 Paperwhite. If you're only going to read in great light or outdoors, you'll probably really love it. But if you do any reading that relies on the front light, you might find it distracting and negative to the whole experience.
In contrast, the Voyage screen looks much 'whiter' and has a lot more contrast - it feels high resolution and sharp. The device is also lighter (not a lot, but it's noticeable). I like the 'pagepress' buttons and the vibration motor in the Voyage. Some people don't, but I found I was using the papepress buttons more than touching the screen. And the front light on the voyage was much, much more even than the paperwhite (and you can't see the LED's on the voyage, even when you look for them). It's not all perfect though, in darkness my voyage front light isn't perfectly even, but it's leagues better than the 2015 Paperwhite I had.
Maybe I got a dodgy 2015 Paperwhite, who knows. I still love Kindles (i've been using them since the Keyboard), but I just wish Amazon would actually produce a front lit screen that was perfectly evenly lit! They've had 3 or 4 goes now and they still haven't quite nailed it.
    Thought I'd share…

    • My PW2 was unevenly lit at first but after a few weeks it evened out much to my suprise.
I actually prefer the less blue light of the PW2 and according to "experts" blue light is more distruptive to sleep, if you read at night.

      • Fair enough. I hadn't heard of it getting better over time, but here's hoping :) Maybe my Voyage will get even better with time too?
I've also read other people say they prefer slightly warmer screens because it's easier on the eyes. And they're probably right. Although, when I say my Voyage is 'whiter' it's still not really white - it's more that greyish-with paper colour that the carta screens look like. In any case, I'm glad your PW2 ended being more even. At the end of the day, this deal is a bargain for these two Kindles, especially considering the Aussie dollar right now.

        • I'm currently tossing up between the new paperwhite and voyage. So do you think the extra $100 is justified?

        • @maybeamacy: The upgrades probably aren't 'worth' an extra $100, but if you have the money you might find you'd be happier with the Voyage. Personally, I'd rather spend the extra and be competently happy with the whole reading experience, rather than constantly looking at the imperfections. But $269 or $299 for an e-reader is too expensive IMO, especially when a PW2 is only $119. Just bear in mind that the Voyage isn't perfect either. In fact, going from all the reviews on Amazon, it looks like getting a perfect Kindle of any model is just the luck of the draw.

        • @S3ISOR:

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your Voyage?

It's a lot easier to read off a Kindle than an iPad - is that right? I find that my eyes get pretty fatigued when reading off my iPad for extended periods.

        • @maybeamacy: I don't mind; I paid $240, but was only out of pocket $140 after selling my PW1. So I was happy with that outlay.
And I find it A LOT easier to read on a Kindle over an iPad or phone for two main reasons - the e-ink screen (especially in sunlight) and the single-use function. Basically because the kindle can do nothing but act as a reading device you don't get distracted with email, messages, facebook, etc. With a Kindle, I can get absorbed into reading in a way that I could never achieve on an iPad, phone or computer. And the Voyage (and PW) are so small that they fit in my inner jacket pocket. A lot of people would also classify the battery as another big winner over an iPad - for me it's not a big issue because I don't mind charging devices everyday. The battery is useful for a weekend away or a week of travel, because you don't have to worry about charging it.

    • wouldnt less sharp be better for the eyes? yellow pages like a read print book?

  • I am so confused! I have a Paperwhite from when they first came out (and LOVE it), but wondering if I should upgrade as I have minor issues with mine,
    * it sometimes has indexing issues and gets stuck and burns batteries,
    * it is only 2GB and I'm almost full,
    * plus I'm curious if I might notice a decent increase in everyday readability.

    Thoughts?

Delete about 1000 of those free ebooks from amazon?

      • I wish! It's PDFs of textbooks that have diagrams, eat up space surpringly quick :)

But yes, It's the 120 (?) to 300 jump I'm most curious about! Readability is all…

  • Is it showing that click and collect isn't available for the older Kindle for anyone else? The Kindle that is attached to the thumbnail.

Go back to e reader categories. Click check store stock. Enter post code and choose store. Add to cart and proceed to checkout from there. That should help you :)

Sneaky dick removed the click and collect from the next gen landing page

      • Thanks for pointing this out, managed to order one with C&C :)

  • Can you pay in store with click and collect? I have a Westfield voucher burning a hole in my pocket!

Is the 3rd gen quicker to load pages compared to the 2nd gen?

  • WISH cards can still be used at DSE. I just ordered one for my Mum's birthday using one. I'm pretty sure many on here have been stating that WISH was no longer accepted however…

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/store-payment-options

Hence the additional 5%, or 10%, depending on how much you scored your WISH cards for, makes this even sweeter!

    • Those are in-store payment options. If you buy it online to lock the deal, it doesn't accept WISH gift cards?

      • I bought it online with a WISH card.

  • Rather annoyingly bought the new Kindle Paperwhite last weeekend as a birthday present for my wife - what are the odds of buying it again at $30 off then getting a refund on the previous purchase? Haven't even opened it yet. Should be okay, right?

  • Sorry double post.

  • Dammit just expired! Wish I bought one earlier.
How often do these coupons come around?

    • every day from Dick

    • Deal is now available again :)

      • Ordered.

        Thanks for the update :)

I moved up from a Kindle keyboard to the 300dpi paperwhite. The KN model had an external light and was never even. The screen was a bit dull and took a while to update. Nevertheless over the maybe 3-4 years I had it, it was the most used piece of electronics I've owned- I used it more than my phone. Loved it.

Could not justify the price of the Voyage, would agree with previous poster that the light on the 300dpi is a bit uneven but I don't notice it much anymore- I think it's acceptable. The thing I really don't like is the lack of buttons- it just seems dumb to hit the screen with a finger to turn the page.

the screen quality is great, I love the extra resolution. Purchased from Dick Smith about 2 weeks ago @ $199 with $45 off for buying on a Thursday- yes that seems like a great excuse for a sale……

  • I always use the official Kindle leather cover too. A good source is here

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111693134551?_trksid=p2060353.m14…

From Telstra on eBay. $35 with free delivery. A great price for the genuine cover. I think they are about $60 in store at Dick Smith etc.

    • $37/$38 atm @ DSE.
