Pity this is only 3G, would have been much more appealing if it was 4G LTE. Still a great phone at this price point though.

  • Good price, but not sure if anyone will be interested now given we had a groupdeal on this for $200 with $50 voucher only last week.

    • Dayummmm nice find. Do you reckon the moto g 2nd gen will be much cheaper than it is now after 3rd gen comes out?

      • definitely but normally they would clear the stock before they launch the next gen stock, so, if you would like to spend around 250-300 for the next gen then wait, otherwise, grab this one now :)

I'm sorry, but I'm at a loss as to why oh why people buy these over priced and under specced "brand named" phones.
Way back when there was no choice but now, all you have to do is open your eyes and SEE. "I'm just a poor boy from a poor family" and I want the best for the least. Is that too much to ask? And it's there for the picking.
I have used Chinese phones for the past three years and they are marvelous. The latest offering on Ozbaby (four days ago) was from TCL (or was that THC?) where you got twice the specs, for $150AU. And it was a just newly released model, with right up to the minute specs. I've had two of them and never a hint of a problem.
Oh well, it takes all sorts, I guess.

    • Based on your opinion, no one should be buying Apple iPhones. but not everyone needs the "top specs", maybe perhaps looking for the nice user experience or just to flash the apple logo in front of friends. Interestingly Apple sells the most iPhones in China..

Coz they have the largest population, they also have the largest Android sale too. What's your point?

        • Not everyone is interested in the cheapest value phone!

    • I have to agree. I used to avoid Chinese droids but their hardware and quality have improved so much that they are the undisputed king of mid range / budget market.

      1. support, updates, warranty

      2. brand name = trust

      3. you need to do a little bit of tinkering, some apps on china phones are not compatible

      4. while its low spec i would say its good enough if you are not a power user

But with the first gen, now and its pretty laggy with the update + apps

Grey import vs local stock. Motorola excellent support in keeping you updated with the latest version of android.

The chinese phones seem great value if you are happy to flash roms etc. Some people just want their phone to work out of the box with no issues.

My dad's Moto G has been working quite well out-of-the-box. At the rate that they're getting updates, it seems they're the next best thing to the Nexus devices.

    • The overwhelming impression I get of Chinese Android phones is that they work but you have to tinker with them and the software and that to get them to work well.

I cbf messing around with any of that crap. So I bought the Moto G from Dick Smith last week. I took it out of the box, turned it on, and surprise surprise, it worked how I expected it to.

      • I've bought 4 china droid phones over the last 2 years and haven't had to tinker with them at all.

        • +2

Haven't had to tinker with them, but…….you bought 4 over the last 2 years to avoid tinkering with the issues every 6 months?

        • @Zoombini33: no, 1st phone died when it's usb port shat itself after a year ( an issue which happens to brand phones. 2nd phone for mrs altomic. 3rd phone for mrs altomic after she dropped and destroyed the 2nd phone after 6 months. 4th phone to replace 1st phone (been using it for over a year now).

@altomic: Appreciate what you're saying about China 'droids (& I've got one somewhere between China and here right now) AND I've had a USB port issue (refusing to charge) with a Moto G (XT1068) belonging to one of my kids.

The possible difference is that Motorola arranged for the defective phone to be picked up by a courier the next day, had it fixed and couriered back - all quite quickly. I suspect that if my new China 'droid had that sort of issue, it'd be fruit for the bin straight away.

        • @lostincanberra: yeah, the usb port issue. I was going to attempt to bypass this by installing wireless charging- 2 soldered connections . have the parts but haven't had the time.

      • I bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G and it has worked perfectly straight out of the box.

Must admit I bought the Moto G on the $160 deal recently for my wife to replace a Samsung S2 but I still use a THL W8 from 2 years ago and it stills works perfectly. I have an old TPG PAYG SIM and an Aldi SIM installed for best coverage/deals and both supplied batteries still work perfectly.

Also have a Nokia 530 as a bike/GPS phone as it's much smaller than todays 5" phones and works far better than cheap Androids. If it wasn't for just a couple of apps, I'd be Windows Phone all the way. I wish more normal users would go down that route than the Apple path as then we'd get those missing apps on Windows devices too.

That aside the Moto G is still a great phone and not a bad price considering.

    • I moved from a Lumia 530 to the Moto G. I've stuck with Windows Phone for 4 years and it still hasn't gotten where it needs to be, so I'm done giving it chances and waiting for the userbase to come so developers actually take notice of it.

The Nokia apps are awesome though. Best GPS ever.

I got this for $200 from the Dick Smith deal (plus the alleged $50 eBay voucher) and I have to say that the build quality as well as the overall experience (Lollipop) have exceeded my expectations. Was worried that the 5" screen would be two big (the biggest screen I've used was 4.7", which I thought was ideal size), but the almost complete lack of bezels actually makes it OK.

I bought this to replace a ZTE 4G phone I got for $99 (locked to Optus), which would have been great for the price if it actually allowed you to install more than 3 apps.

  • Both the MotoG 1st and 2nd Gen are Blue tick. In the absence of some standard of evaluation for reception I will continue to buy phones that have the Telstra Blue Tick

Ahaha. Hahahahah. Haahahaaha. "Unhappily struggling with an old phone can become a lost memory thanks to this Motorola Moto G phone." Well I bought a Moto G 2nd Gen and ended up unhappily struggling with a new phone. I was unsure if 1GB RAM would be enough. It is absolute, totally, unequivocally not enough. Never again.

    • What apps are you running on it for 1gb to be not enough? Not doubting you, just wondering. I only use my moto g for simple stuff, no games… Seems OK, not as fast as more expensive phones. I would have thought this phone lags a bit because of the slower CPU speed

  • I got Motorola for the prompt Android updates. My old Chinese phone is still sitting on 4.1. (Not that Samsung is much better.)
