TCL 3S Octacore 1920x1080 2GB+16GB 4G 13MP+8MP Eyeprint Identification @JD US $119.96 Delivered

1090
JD618X

A few good deals @ JD.com at the moment. This is my pick of the bunch, 5 inch, beefy front and rear camera, lots of frequencies to make many people happy, octacore and decent battery. I liked the redmi listed earlier today, but for $20 more you get better screen, more memory, better camera, similar battery, more processors, and TCL is one of the top 7 phone manufactures in china. I have spent a good bit of time translating through chinese websites and it seems some of this model has the sony exmor and some have samsung isocell camera - both pretty darn good. One site even said it has a metal frame.

US $138.99+$0.97-$20(coupon) = $119.96 roughly AU$150 depending on who you pay with.

  • 1980x1080? I think it should be 1920x1080. Never heard of 1980 resolution.

    • +2

Thanks for the heads up, yes typing in bed on a laptop, fixed the heading now.

    • -3

Actually, as it's width x height, so 1080x1920 is perfectly acceptable. Of course it's 1920x1080 if you turn the phone sideways. Gsmarena lists phones with the same kind of display as 1080x1980.

      • +1

Brezzo, I had a typo in the heading, 1980x1080 not 1920x1080 as I have corrected it. But yes I too have been caught when they swap the 2 values.

        • +3

Oops, my bad. I misread dadeadman's post :(

        • +4

@dadeadman: The numbers 9 and 0 have nothing to do with how I misread it anyway, no need to be patronising.

  • +3

    Awesome specs for the price.

  • Special Technique Eyeprint Identification — > looks like has a iris scanner
Dont see where it says anything about Sony camera/Samsung camera. Doesnt seem to indicate whether battery is removable or not. Otherwise specs look good considering its a 5 inch phone :).
Hmm nothing about micro sd slot — some articles indicate will have one. Also OTG

    • +1

Other spec sites say sony and samsung cameras, I have spent hours looking for the info.

http://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/7c7d3431 says ISOCELL which is the samsung.
      http://www.chinaphonereview.com/tcl-m2m-3s says Sony Exmor
http://translate.google.com.au/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=ht… is the translated site which says randomly shipped as either sony or samsung "TCL Meme da 3S will be randomized to Samsung ISOCELL and SONY stacked two image sensors, relatively speaking, it may be more familiar sensor ISOCELL Samsung, Samsung ISOCELL can enhance imaging The signal to noise ratio and dynamic contrast ratio, and has the same image quality with SONY sensor stack. The machine also uses a lens module IR blue glass filters and AR AR coating, making the image sharper transparent daily, in a later article we will bring them to the aircraft's photo proofs." - Google translated but you get the idea.

Battery is not not removable, but the youtube footage pulling the phone apart shows it's not hard to get to.

      I hope that helps.

      • Thanks!!. Something to consider :)

        • Yeah it took ages to find it all as its a new model too.

        • @ShipShapeRC: I was try to find review about the phone. Would like to know how good is iris scanner. If you find something, please share.

        • +1

@dadeadman: It's new technology, I think it will a "Hey look how cool my new phone is with Iris Scanning". I never lock my phone anyway, but I sure will be once this arrives! I wonder if it has a special preset filter called 'The Morning After' with 'red eye' reduction.

All these cheap Chinese phones are really really tempting me now.. My S3 is dying anyway. This one looks like a top phone for the price.

    My concerns:

    • Does it work with Vaya for 4G? Not familiar with the frequencies at all..
    • Is there good custom ROM support? I would assume not (the less well known the phone, the worse the support). A quick google search tells me not.
    • If not, can the phone at least be rooted so that bloatware (if any) can be removed, or just simply so I can get support for apps/features that require root?
    • Is the battery capacity quoted really what it is?
    • Warranty - I would assume you could forget about it lol

Great that it has dual-sim too :)

    • +2

Supports the major 4G frequencies for Vaya (which runs off optus, B1,3,7,40).

Won't fully support 4G Plus though from the specifications, but not really a big issue.

    • -2

The only bad thing about these phones is the battery. The capacity feels like it quickly degrades. So like in the first few months they battery life might get you a full day. But 6 months later it barely lasts half a day.

      • +10

        Do you own one?

        • I've owned a couple of chinese phones including the THL 4000 because of the "large battery" but its pretty much the same experience.

        • @oringal:

Many phone brands are in China and you need to select the one with good reputation and is large company. THL is the brand i never heard before.

If you can try Huawei, Xiaomi or Meizu, they are all good. TCL is not bad, too. TCL also makes reasonable price large screen TVs which you can buy in Harvey Norman.

        • @oringal: Anything could be going on here, and could happen to mainstream brands. Really need some hard battery stat evidence to say something like that

      • I've had a mpie G7 for about a year now and the battery life is still great, uses about 40% a day. 2 hours of phone calls and prob 3-4 hours fb/email/web etc.

      • Same with my Nexus 5, I barely get 1/2 a day. I would really love a quantum jump in battery technology, a week would be nice.

        • our workaround: Carry a PowerBank.

      • +3

Have brought in multiple THL and Elephone units for myself & others. Have never had an issue with battery being as advertised in any of them.

        • +1

@infinite Real experience is what people need to hear and you have supplied just that. Thanks!

    • +6

      Vaya uses Optus 4G network.
      Optus 4G network uses LTE 700 / 1800 / 2100 / 2300 / 2600 MHz

This phone get bands B1, B3 , B7 which are

2100MHz (B1) FDD – Telstra (a handful of sites), Optus (Darwin, Tasmania)
      1800MHz (B3) FDD – Telstra, Optus, Vodafone
2600MHz (B7) FDD – Optus, Telstra. (TPG have a license but have not announced plans for it.)

So, yeah, this phone would work with Vaya

  • +1

Great specs for the price, but my +1 is for the 'Real-Time Skin Beautify' feature.

  • Is the CUBOT X12 any good for USD $93.90 with the same coupon?

I need a phone for my work sim.

    http://en.jd.com/product/CUBOT-X12-5-0-inch-64-bit-4G-FDD-LT…

    • +2

For $20 less its screen is way poorer, camera is lower speced both front and back, 4 core only, less frequencies in 3G (Telstra folks wont like it). But aside from that, it seems an okay phone if you dont need the specs. I think the redmi deal a few hours earlier would be better if $20 is that important.

      • Thanks, The redmi is too big Im trying to get something around the same size as the S3 LTE I am replacing so maybe the TCL would be best. I hope airwatch works on it, its fairly picky about what phone it works on.

        S3 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm
        TCL 139.8 x 69.6 x 8.9mm
        Redmi 154 x 78.7 x 9.5 mm

An unboxing.Looks like battery is built in. Damn. dealbreaker for me.Oh well.

    • +2

Yes it is but as I replied above, look on youtube for disassemble footage. It seems pretty easy with a scew driver to swap it if the main one is worn out. If you work away from power, just take a xiaomi power bank.

  • +2

Looks great for the price, do these phones generally allow you to select English during setup?

    • +1

      They always come in English.

  • Looks like a better option compared to the K3 we've ordered recently :S

  • 'Lewa OS 6.0 Base On Android 5.0(64bit)' - so does it have google play installed out of the box? or do we need to do something else to get this working?

    • +2

in answer to my own question, on the JD website for this phone:
"If we got firmware, we will root the model with the firmware and shelter the update function,so that the model can enjoy multi-language and Google Playstore"

      so eh, im not sure

      • One of the youtube review clips had play store on the screen. Was not english so not sure if they added it off camera.

        • Is that confirmed?

        • +1

@slvrln89: Nope, I dont have it in my hand to confirm anything. But it must be able to be added if it's not.

      • If you want/trust them to root the phone for you they can add play store and other google services to it. That is not hard at all.

    • Google Services is banned in China, so typically these phones don't come rooted or with Google Play Services (much like with MIUI, Google Services is not included). But usually there is an easy workaround - the LewaOS App Store, much like the MIUI App Store will have a Google Installer which basically downloads the framework and everything else needed to get Google Play running. You can also try sideloading the apk

  • +3

I almost went for the redmi. Glad i waited for this. Thanks OP! Also prefer the 5" screen on this phone as opposed to the 5.5" on the redmi. Phones over 5" are to big for my liking.

  • Does anyone have a link to a phone case for this?

    • I did see one on ebay, but it's a new model, accessories will come…

    • +1

No link but Ali express has $2 gel cases and. US$10 pu leather cases

  • Are there phones that you can choose between both sims for the data?

Also are there any other ROMs that we are able to use on this?

    • Not sure about this, but I have the original Zenfone 6 and you can choose which sim is used for data. On the sms and call screens there are two buttons - sim1 and sim2.

  • +1

specs are great for the price.
    are there any custom roms?

The only things keeping me with buying a chinese phone are.
    1) would the development community pick it up and develop custom roms, specially as the phone ages, and the manufacturer can't be bothered in releasing updates?

    2) resale value.

    • +3

Resale value of a $150 phone?

      • +1

yeah. what happens if I hate it… need to offload it.

        • I would pay max $80 if you sold on ebay.Take this with a grain of salt as might get more but thats my max second hand.

        • How much do you think you would lose on resale of a near new premium phone if you didn't like it?

        • @bxpressiv: That depends on the phone's market value and it has nothing to do with how much you paid for it.
Back on topic, I think you can easily get $150 back with those specs if you resell it within 3 months.

        • @maxhu:

I'm just pointing out that the loss of resale value shouldn't be a discriminator for this phone vs any other.

    • I was in a similar position - for resale you're also looking at a much smaller market of people.

Also don't forget about warranty claims etc…

  • +1

Anyone purchased from this mob before? They reliable and fast for delivery?

    • +2

JD China is one of the online shopping site giants that currently splitting the market with Amazon in China. Don't know how good the US version is though.

      • Didn't notice any low price offers from, eg, AliExpress…

      • didn't know Jing dong ship to overseas.i prefer JD to tmall anyday, let alone taobao.

    • +1

the boss of this site just bought a 15 million house in Sydney.

the site JD is a very large and reliable. JD is also an US NasdaQ listed company, should not be any problem.

    • +3

Awesome.. give a neg to someone asking a legitimate question..

  • +6

TCL makes Alcatel handsets so they are a high quality brand and not one of those 'Chinese" handsets.

    • +1

You are spot on, they brand TCL in China and Alcatel outside China.

      • +1

Is it the same TCL TV brand sold in Australia?

        • +2

          I believe so.

        • Yes, they also make air conditioner, fridge, washing machine and etc. I am not joking…

        • @jjj123: Toyota was originally a sewing machine company.

    • Interesting, but was Alcatel ever known for quality handsets?

In fact, I don't recall any Alcatel handsets for quality… Only for their low price but subpar quality in Australia, based on reviews.

      • +2

yeah I'm not sure I've ever heard "dude check out my new alcatel!". They are a known brand, but they've always been a budget brand

      • +1

They are actually very well known for good build and quality, in the low-mid range cost phones. As with any business or industry, charging a premium price has no correlation to actually having a premium quality product.

        • Yeah you see. that's what I'm disagreeing with…

They aren't known for quality at any level. They're known for cheap AND bad phones (looking at reviews and ratings).

I'm not trying to change your opinion, just giving my own.

If I were to buy a budget phone, Alcatel would never be on my list (or ever). These come to mind when I'm thinking of a budget phone: Motorola, acer, 1+1, and that new one that that long like a Nexus 4, forgot the name…

…omg, the one that looks like a Nexus 4, IS an Alcatel lol!

Yep, besides the Alcatel one touch idol 3, I don't recall any Alcatel phones to be of high quality with good reviews.

      • +1

In this context Alcatel was used to compare with Jiayu, Ding Ding, WahZee

  • That 60 day shipping kills it for me. Otherwise I'd be snapping this up.

    • +2

In another 60 days you will be like, damn I should have got that phone.

      • So true

    • +1

Thats because its a new model and presale. Shipping includes presale time.

  • +2

We discussed this in the last K3 thread. I looked for antutu results and this apparently gets 29000~, the K3 Note apparently gets 46000. This may have a good front camera and screen colours, but it's not a great processor and is only 5 inch opposed to 5.5 on the K3. This processer is 4x 1.5GHz and 4x 1.0GHz.

The K3 note is better. :)

    http://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/7c7d3431

    • +1

the listing says 8 core 1.5Ghz? it's not 4 core.

      • 4 + 4 = 8

        4 x 1.5 GHz
        4 x 1.0 GHz

May be 8 cores but it's misleading.

        • +3

You will find most 8 cores do this, run on 4 fast ones when needed and slower ones to save power when not. Common practice and description.

        • +1

          you're right..
the plus for this is the cpu is not a mediatek.. meaning there's more of a chance for custom roms (if that matters to you) for me it does..

thought I would much prefer to buy a lenovo..

        • @elcheapoinoz:

Agreed there, MTK have always been a pain for custom roms, but here are a heap for the K3

          http://rom.7to.cn/romlist/lenovo-k50-t5 (In Chinese, use Google)

This phone is only months old and very well spec'd, I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more rom's for this one.

        • @AngryAlfred: Good specs are not enough to get a custom ROM. Popularity wins instead

        • @ShipShapeRC: And then you have what Mediatek calls 'True Octa-Core' where there is no switching. This started with the MT6952, with the latest incarnation being the MT6752

    • wheres this K3 note you speak of?

    • I agree..
Unless you really can't stretch your phone budget to a wopping ~$210, the K3 Note is the Chinese phone to get.
      http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_180347.html

      • +2

Use the coupon above and get it at JD for about $25 less than gearbest. GB's warranty folks irked me on my last purchase.

        • thanks for the info re JD and their awesome discount.

    • +1

AngryAlf - I remember you were defensive of your purchase on the other thread too. Both good phones in my opinion. K3 might suit you better, this will suit others better. Quite similar but a few interesting spec differences. No one is better than the other, just what suits each person better. This one plays games well enough on youtube, and 8MP front camera that takes 1080 videos at 30fps is rather handy. 95% Gammut means better colours. Plus metal in the frame is a nice strengthener. But each to their own.

      • Yes, I didn't mean to put this phone down by my comment and totally agree. This one has dual band wi-fi, 8mp front camera and 95% NTSC colour gamut. So this would be really good for somebody into photos that wants accurate, vivid colours.

But they advertise it as "Octa Core up to 1.5 GHz" I have a THL with quad 1.5GHz which isn't that great, nobody would rush out to buy a quad 1.0GHz phone either. This is just not a great processor.

If the K3 wasn't an option I'd gladly buy this, but as it stands for me the K3 is better.

        • thanks for pointing this out guys. i went with the Lenovo simply because the brand is more famillier/westernised and there seems to be a lot more hackers/support for the K3. i couldn't find any community forum or anything for details on the phone in this thread.
