24 packs of bottles water are normally $7-8 here… various brands. Not much of a bargain

    • +4

      But it's still a bargain.

    • +9

      Every dollar counts mate.

      Thanks TA.

      • Not when the opportunity cost of saving the dollar outweighs the costs. In this case it might be acceptable ;)

  • +1

$6.69 at aldi for their northbrook brand everyday
    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/groceries/home-of-the-lowest-pric…
    69c cheaper still a bargain i guess…

  • +1

About 2c for that much draught water here.

  • Only drink nobles water, taste a lot better and does not have all the stuff these brands have. Always buy water in a cask.

    • then you miss out on 24 drink bottles, i'm sick of buying $10 drink bottles and they start leaking after 3 months or get left behind and lost, also hard to carry a cask around.

    • Goon of fortune just isn't the same these days…

    • In a cask?

      Going high class I see.

  • +2

IMO this is a bargain in the same sense that a $30K bottle of scotch reduced to $20K is a bargain.

    • More like water worth a small fraction of a cent selling at thousands of times it's value. Wait that's not a bargain. Unless you consider the marketing to be worth that much.

Oh wait you did think it was worth that much if you bought it, heh.

  • +2

    Water sucks, Gatorade is better.

    • H2O!

    • +5

We should grow our crops using electrolytes.

      • +1

        Brawndos' got what plants crave.

        • Ow My Balls!

    • LOL. Gatorade is as good for you as cordial unless you are an elite athlete. Sugar, salt and water. If you're using it for anything other than an occasional refreshing cold drink or to save your life in the desert it has no purpose. Water (even if you have paid for it) at least performs an important function without forcing your body to have to detoxify the fluid first. I'll admit I keep bottled water in the house as it's extremely convenient and I have a heap of bottle neck clips on my Bug-out-bag for when the zombie apocalypse (or next cyclone) arrives.

      • wouldnt athletes have something far better to drink? anyway, at least Gatorade is 'uniquely' produced, even in the loose sense of the word, bottled water isn't even trying.

        • Both true which is my point. The only people who could gain any benefit in drinking sports drinks are elite athletes and they all have very strictly controlled intakes so it's not marketed at them. Also, as I said I buy them for the convenience. They are truly marketed at those of us who are too lazy to clean a drink bottle or those who think fluoride in water is a deep conspiracy. I grab a bottle every time I get in the car to prevent myself from driving through KFC or Red Rooster for a Coke Zero or Pepsi Max then thinking "while I'm here I'll grab a chicken burger and hot chips. Oh, wait. An upgrade means I get a large bottle." It even works 9 times out of…100!

    serious…
crap i went to coles saw for $7, pickup a slab, and woolworth was just close by :-(

ahh well gnna stock another slab or two

  • +1

Bottled Ice House leaves me with mixed feelings.

  • +6

Iva Davies gets 5% of every bottle sold.

    • Yep.

You have to pour a little bit out for him.

  • Any news of this in SA? Is it available? Is it $0.10/bottle return and if so is it $8.40 here rather than $6?

    • AFAIK it's illicit behaviour to sell a bottle without that return charge in SA.

  • +14

Sorry for neg, but there is a reason why people are not buying it. Purchasing this just transfers cost of ownership for clean up somewhere else while giving negligible convenience in most cases. Real deal is to buy a glass/metal bottle in a silicon case and refill it.

    • -7

      Hear hear!

      • +5

Uh huh. And what do you think this achieves. The water is already sterile but hey you could save time by buying some iodine tablets and pointlessly adding them. Would save your heating bills as well.

        • +1

Water might be of a very high quality in Melbourne, but probably not sterile.

      • +2

Not too sure why you'd be boiling water. If there's a specific reason that you are boiling water for beforehand, that might indicate something more sinister on a local scale as opposed to a water quality problem.

I replace my plastic bottle every month.

    • "If you don’t have one, visit out our online store."
"You can save all that money by drinking tab water."
"And after all bottled water is expensive."

They really need some assistance with their site….

    • +1

Why is there not a container deposit scheme in other states, like we have here in SA? It works pretty well here.

      • +2

        One word: Lobbying.

      • There is a non legislated scheme in Victoria, by the name of Envirobank. It is loosely based on the issuance of points instead of cash, which are then redeemable for a selection of rewards. Reverse vending machines play a major part in this cycle.

Some might contend that it is more trouble than it's worth.

      • -1

Why is there not a container deposit scheme in other states, like we have here in SA? It works pretty well here.

Because the people in other states are intelligent enough to realise that paying 10c extra for each bottle, then having to transport them (at our cost) to a collection depot to get your money back is a waste of time, money and effort.

In Sydney, we pay no surcharge on each bottle, and we recycle by placing all our bottles in a bin which they COLLECT every week or so from our home or work place.

SA bottles still go to the same place that other State's bottle go to…. the recyclers.

        • Because the people in other states are intelligent enough to realise that paying 10c extra for each bottle, then having to transport them (at our cost) to a collection depot to get your money back is a waste of time, money and effort.

Well I surely hope that most people in other states are more intelligent than to think that things work that simplistically here in SA. Most people themselves do not take bottles and cans and recycling depots. Instead these items end up with people who benefit with this money. Either sporting clubs and other organisations (with their "bottle runs"). And the ones that get discarded often get picked up by people who need it (such as the homeless).

In Sydney, we pay no surcharge on each bottle, and we recycle by placing all our bottles in a bin which they COLLECT every week or so from our home or work place.

And it's all good in theory, but how many are ending up in these bins? According to the link in JetBombat's post … "South Australia enjoys a recycling rate of cans and bottles of between 75-85% while the rate in other states is less than half of this".
(PS, we have a collection bin too).

SA bottles still go to the same place that other State's bottle go to…. the recyclers

As long as they are recycled. "According to the 2010 Clean Up Australia Rubbish Report, one in ten items found on Clean Up Australia Day were related to plastic drinking bottles."

    • +2

Even in Australia, so many of these bottles end up in street gutters and get washed out into the sea. Every time I see a plastic water bottle I think of this

  • This has been at my local for 2 weeks now.

  • -1

great deal… as a fans of ozbargain, mainly prioritise on the price on top of all other thing, this is a great bargain… Great bargain on Ozbargain… Heaps Thanks TA, another great deals again by you. Do appreciate your contributions…

  • +4

Bottled water is never a bargain. The cost on our environment is too costly.

If you must buy bottled water then make sure it's Thank You Water

    • +2

Are you actually that naive lel? You beliefs about the product are being guided like an obedient donkey by marketing rofl.

    • +2

Do u neg every alcohol deal because the cost of alcohol related problems is so large in society?
Oh I can some up with so many examples.
this reminds me of those neggers of caged eggs but will happily up vote $1 tee shirts from child labour.

    • -3

Are you serious? You are advocating TYW?

    • Water in Australia is clean but Woolworths have a market for this product bought by those who weren't born here which is about half of the population.

      • +1

a market for this product bought by those who weren't born here which is about half of the population.

Your numbers are correct, but your reason is wrong.

The reason there is such a large market for bottled water is because about half of the population is dumber than the average person living here.

  • they are also the same price at coles :) but coles normally sell them for $12

    • Lol, poses the question, is it a better bargain at Coles selling it for the same price, coz they normally have higher everyday price?

      Cole normally $12.10, Wooliesnormally $11.

  • +6

    Not a bargain.

Tap water (Melbourne) tastes as good as bottled water.

Not only does it taste as good, its free, and has significantly impact on the environment.

There is really no need to buy bottled water in Australia (SA excluded)

      • +6

Tap water is not free. Well yeah, maybe it is if you're freeloading off your parents and still live at home.

Indeed you are paying for water at home, though at a generous assumption of $3.00/kL, that works out to be:
        $0.003/L,
        $0.000003/mL, and therefore
        $0.0018/600mL.

For a 24-pack, this being 14.4L of water, that would work out to be $0.0432/24-pack or $0.0432/14.4L.

So yes, $0.0432 is not free. Four cents is a lot of money these days.
        Petrol might even be cheaper.

But obtaining it from a public source (eg: refill stations) is free. You could say that our taxes have somehow contributed to that refill station, but that's another story as you could also say everything else is somehow supplemented by taxes.

overseas tourists should bring their own tap water from home

Absolutely no need, at least in Victoria.

        http://southeastwater.com.au/LearnAboutWater/WaterQuality/Co…

        • @KaptnKaos,

Actually that's not correct, as the water usage AND the sewer discharge will both increase by using the tap water from home.

So it will be higher than your figures.

But I do believe that re-usable glass / stainless steel bottles is the way to go!

      • +4

Asking for a 'scientific study' on something as fundamentally subjective as taste is disingenuous.

I'd be willing to wager that in blinded testing people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between tap and bottled water. That would contradict any industry claim that bottled water tastes better.

I live in Melbourne's S.E. and the water is perfectly fine. Even family members who have lived in their houses for more than 40 years have no issue with the quality of their water.

        • +1

There is nothing wrong with Melbourne water.

          http://southeastwater.com.au/LearnAboutWater/WaterQuality/Co…

        • +3

          @KaptnKaos:

I know, I live in Melbourne. I drink the water every day. I was agreeing with you.

        • +2

          @Juddy:

Sorry if it sounded the wrong way. I was just supporting your claim.
          :)

      • +1

cmon pmupsinep, it's like you're not even trying anymore

        • +1

I think he's too busy spelling his username backwards there…

    • How can you compare all of Melbourne's water to all bottled water??

    • +1

I love these posts when all the city slickers assume that nice clean water comes out of the tap for everyone. It doesn't. There are a lot of people with no mains water.

      • +1

There's a lot of regional properties with water tanks. Used to drink that at my relatives farm and homes without mains. Water in plastic bottles at most Australian supermarkets didn't even exist and would have been an absurd concept.

        • +3

There's a lot of urban properties with water tanks and to be clear buying water in plastic bottles at the supermarket is still an absurd concept.

I get buying bottled water when you're out with no other alternative but if you're buying it at the supermarket in slabs you are then taking it home to open and drink rather than using a glass and a tap. Burning money would probably be more fun and cheaper.

      • +2

You don't really think all those people who don't have mains water live on bottled water do you? Apart from areas that have air polution, as long as regular maintenance is carried out, the tank water is plenty clean enough to drink, though a filter is probably a good idea.

  • These bottles are extremely flimsy, like really thin.

    • So? They're a bargain compared to the contents :p

      • +2

Considering the water content is worth at most 5 cents for the entire 24 pack, this product is $5.95 overpriced.

Hence, I say it again, no reason to be a bargain.

  • -5

    Interesting post.

Although this 24-pack of bottled water might cost less than rival store products, tap water is much, much cheaper and readily available. Melbourne water can also be consumed straight from the tap, with little end-user filtration required.

For those seeking water bottles (the container specifically - to reuse later), PET containers shouldn't really be reused as drinking bottles but it might be ideal for them.

No reason to upvote here. No bargain, sorry.

    • +2

Melbourne is such a great place. I just wish the people who lived there would talk about how superior it is to every other place in Australia a bit more often.

      • As the saying goes, you don't know what you have until it's gone.

        • +2

Paved paradise to put up a parking lot

      • You've got beef with all Melbournians?
        Sounds sensible.

    • +1

The link you provided has an online store. Are you promoting your own water bottles

  • $7 Here in SA… Bought 1 anyway for fishing trips.

  • there is a strong argument tap water is better for you (than bottled water), due to govt dosing of essentials such as fluoride etc, and sanitation via chlorine etc
    case in point:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation
among other less controversial dosing strategies
also yes the government does control the quality of your water and no you don't need to put a tinfoil hat on and worry about such things

    • +1

Not to worry, there's no doubt some do-gooder out there suggesting that the fluoridation of water is the government's way of killing innocent citizens :-\

  • also with regards to the taste - I believe some people don't like the taste of tap water 'fresh' from the tap, but I guarantee there is no regular person alive that can A/B blind test cold, refrigerated tap water VS cold bottled water reliably. The cooler temp kills the 'chlorine' taste which is generally the giveaway.

    • +1

Fresh tap water vs bottled tap water? Which to choose

  • Or just buy Coles 24pk for $7… Not much of a deal.

    • Or just don't.

      • -1

        Congratulations, completely irrelevant.

        • No, TOTALLY relevant.

The poibt is that t makes absolutely no difference if you throw you money away from your left pocket, or throw it away from your right pocket. The choice you should be making remains the same - especially on a website like this where the whole objective is to NOT throw money away unnecessarily.

        • -1

          @llama:
How is it relevant? My post was on topic and tommyc's was not.

  • +1

They had this on special last week at my local Woolworths, but didn't want to post it as I am not a fan of the Ozbargain community.

You are all as worse as those guys on the Whirlpool community.

However I made a conscious effort to stock up on a fair amount of this great bargain as I provide all my Uber Passengers with water.

    • +1

"I don't like this community but I'm going to keep commenting and interacting with the community."

      • Yes that is correct. One way street.

        • What don't you like about this website?

    • Cool story bro

  • -7

The lids on this brand are defective. The top of the lid breaks away (like a plastic 10c coin) rendering the product useless you want to use it to water plants or something I guess.

TA this is my 300th comment (sorry no coupon).

  • had a coles express nxt to us. printed free water atm vouchers with coles cc all year n never paid for water yet this year . with free bottle daily

  • +3

Taps at home / work don't work?

  • +2

Fyi, bottled water is worse for you than tap water. It's also worse for the environment. It's also worse for whoever's ground water is being sold for cents to a company which is gonna charge you dollars. Not a bargain. Buy yourself a water bottle and fill it up elsewhere for true savings (free)

    • I suggested that and got the hell negged out of me.
      Watch out.

  • -1

I buy bottled water because it contains no fluoride, tap water might be free, but having my ever lubing gubbermint care so much about my health they medicate it without my consent despite it being banned in many European countries. We here in Australia still love our sweet poisonous water and GMO foods without any labeling or warnings.

    • And there it is … the fluoride comment.

Bringing back conspiracy theories from the 60's.
