Not sure how good this deal is but for $39 would be good for small projects. What's your ideas?

  • need to add memory, OS and usb2.0 only. But for the price looks like a fun toy.

    • I'm trying to resist

      • +6

i have a few of these (dont ask)

they are useless for windows as the video card driver is rubbish

they do however make fine NAS and firewall boxes esp. this one with dual nic

i actually bought one today, its oem pack so you only get a backplane and sata cable

also only dual sata but you can get $10 sata cards off ebay

        • Video good enough for HTPC?
I've been looking for a small board like this to replace my aging AthlonX2 HTPC system.
Need VGA as that's the only input my (aging) PJ takes at this stage which has been the hold up to moving to previous project boards like these.

        • @scubacoles: It should work according to specs and an old review linked in this deal comment https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198012#comment-2818373 but you might want confirmation from someone with direct experience.

        • @scubacoles:

you do well with a VGA card, the GMA3600 is useless even at 720p

    • Need a power supply as well. 1x 24-pin ATX.

      • +1

        I'd suggest a picoPSU-80 - mini, fanless, external 12V brick.

  • Please be careful cut-n-pasting outdated info.

    new Intel® Atom™ processor D2500

Its actually rather old. Runs hot and slow compared to current low-cost Atoms.
Still cheap for a mobo, if things like speed, usb3 and hdmi are not important.

    • Would this be an acceptable motherboard to run as a MAME?

      • +3

It's a really old and crappy processor, so if you want the best performance for the absolute lowest price, I would probably look at getting one of those cheap Chinese Win 8 Stick PC's.

When you take into account the cost of procuring the DDR3 RAM, hard disk, ITX casing and power supply required to run this motherboard, you may as well go for a compute stick or box for roughly $120 AUD.

        Geekbench scores

Intel Atom Z3735F 1.33ghz (quad core) Windows 32 bit
        Single Core score 785
        Multi core score 2223

Intel Atom D2500 1.83ghz (dual core) Windows 32 bit
        Single Core score 481
        Multi Core score 830

The trade off is that none of the compute sticks/boxes feature upgradable memory or graphics, but for a dedicated MAME box you probably won't need memory expansion or a faster GPU.

I have this board running with pfsense for my home router.
Handles everything without a problem. Great cheap (is now) board and will buy another one as a backup or a NAS.

    • +1

mind running openvpn on it and seeing how much bandwidth it can handle at full load?

      • Don't need to run openvpn yet, so it is running a very basic setup.
Kids computers assigned OpenDNS for web filtering.
Roku 3 get routed through Getflix smart DNS so I can watch Netflix US and anything else with geoblocking
        Rest goes through Optus DNS
        bandwidth monitoring
CPU sits around 15% on full load
As I'm on Optass, at night at the moment I only get 5Mbps while through the day I'm getting around 88Mbps.
Don't think I would run any version of Windows on it.

  • ROFL - the same speed as an Athlon XP 300, so it would be great for running Win Me for a Halloween horror stunt. As pw2002au said -It looks like great fun:-)

  • Not a bargain to me considering so many sub $200 laptops recently.

    • +4

Seems a bargain to me considering the lack of sub $40 laptops :P

  • You need DDR3 1066 memory with this… so take note if you have 1600mhz RAM it may not be compatible, have to hunt down older DDR3 memory from ebay.

  • unless one has specialist use for it.. IE: control loads of surveillance cameras, some factory production line monitoring..build your OWN NAS for special purposes etc… there is really little use for such a thing….

better off one of those 37XX series boxes or stick

  • Thanks for the heads up. Bought one to use as a pfSense firewall. Found 2gb of ram on ebay for ~$15

    • Was that new RAM? If so could you please post link
