  • Is 1.35v low voltage RAM a tautology? I mean is there 1.35v that isn't low voltage?

    • +1

Well DDR3L is 1.35v but the original DDR3 was 1.5v

  • +1

So since this laptop is sub $300 and I will be using it solely for work, then can I claim the full cost at tax time?

"As a general rule, desktop computers are depreciated over a period of four years, and laptops can be depreciated over three years. You can claim an immediate deduction for the full cost of the item if it costs $300 or less."

    [Link to ATO Article] (https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/In-…)

  • +2

Just sent cashback form, it says $10 fee will be deducted from gift card, this will bring $39 down to $29.

    • Dafuq? That doesn't sound right!

    • +2

You must have misread the terms and conditions. It says if you have to change your name or address details, they will deduct $10 from your cashback.

      • Yeah I recall reading the $10 thing but not in relation to gift cards, that would seem odd.

  • Shopping Square have the low voltage ram (8gb) for $69 (with $7 shipping)
    http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_415904_Kingston_KVR16LS11…

    Somewhat unrelated
They also have some ram for microserver n54 (non-ecc but this works)
    http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_415902_Kingston_KVR16N118…

    • +1

Good option for people not near a MSY. Nitpicking here, but actually $69.95 + $7.95 = $77.90 delivered

Here is a suitable Patriot you could pick up for $75 if in stock near you,

      http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/memory/15710--patriot-so-dim…

Or a Kingston also @ MSY for $77 pick up, more delivered.

      http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/home/12483-kingston-so-dimm-…

      • My local MSY was out of stock, plus i was thinking of getting some microserver ram as well. With the combined shipping i think i ended up slightly ahead without needing to travel anywhere (although delay in getting the items!)

        • Yeah, good call if getting multiple items and not in a hurry. Was just giving an alternative :-)

      • +2

Cheapest compatible 8GB stick I could find was this Crucial one for $70 pickup from Centrecom. Good alternative for those with a location near them:
        http://www.centrecom.com.au/8gb-crucial-sodimm-ddr3-pc12800-…

Shipping is also available, came up as $7.45 for standard shipping to addresses in VIC and WA that I tested

  • Is the screen on this PC touch enabled ?
I managed to do all the recommended upgrades and so quite happy with that as it was unfamiliar territory.
I probably missed the fact that screen was not touch enabled ?

    • No the screen is just a regular LED screen so not a touch screen

      • +1

Touch would be nice, unlike most people I actually like touch screens. But for this price you really couldn't expect it to include it.

My other wish would be to have backlit keyboard, obviously same as above.

I wonder if either are upgrade-able from a higher end model? Would be a totally silly investment but still curious if it's possible :)

  • My local MSY was sold out of both Crucial and Kingston 8Gb today :( Will now look on eBay - has anyone looked there?

    • +1

I found myself and another guy 8GB Kingston sticks there for ~75 delivered during the first deal. I'd imagine $75-80 is still doable on eBay.

      • I got this http://ebay.com.au/itm/191588936345

Bought 2 during father's day promo. Worked out to be $67 each

        Working well

        • Will order some from here, price seems reasonable $77 inc post. Too bad the exchange rate is so sucky found kingston 8gb on Amazon for $55 USD inc post.

        • That's cool, got yourself a bargain there. Cheapest local price I've seen for awhile (RAM used to be cheaper years ago, but DDR3L probably wasn't out in SODIMM form then)

    • +1

See my comment above for a 8GB stick for $70 pickup if you are in VIC, or works out to be around $77 delivered to other states

    • I bought the Lappy today and my local MSY were also out of RAM.

I'm going for the Shopping express deal to get them together.

      Sandisk 128GB SSD SATA SDSSDP-128G-Q25 $59

      Kingston 8GB DDR3 1600MHz SODIMM $88

Total with $9 Shipping to Vic $156

A couple of dollars more than the MSY Kingston RAM & Kingston 120G SSD ($149 Pick-up or $165 Delivered).

      • Great SSD price but the 8GB RAM is $11-12 overpriced

      • I looked at that ssd but iops are really bad

        • +2

Any other recommendation that won't take forever to arrive?

Or would the SanDisk be okay give the Lappy is only SATA II anyway?

This I think this say's it all for this laptop, any SSD will do, or an upgrade to a SSD will make all the difference over a HDD and that difference between a super-fast "top end" drive and a cheaer SSD upgrade will be unnoticed by most of us.

        • +1

@HelpWanted: personally I will be waiting for a decent ssd deal. Upgraded ram and removing bloatware is getting me through at the moment

        • @pacsman:

Problem is I can't get either (RAM or SSD) local at the moment at a good price, I'd like to open the box in the knowledge something is on the way!

  • Am thinking of getting this to take o/s for 6wks. Have never done any upgrading or anything before and basically have nfi in that area. Is it simple enough for a complete novice to do? Thanks

    • +3

Piece of cake. Briefly follow this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDVcPCH1YB0

Similar laptop but our ram is much easier to locate. Takes approx 15min even for a novice

      • +2

Thanks sooo much pacsman. Really appreciate the reply:)

        • +3

Just watch the single cable when you separate the case. It pulls out relatively easy. It connects the mobo to the speakers on the case.

You will see the ram slot straight away.

Case is a bit tricky to get back on. You need to start on the left side and get around the head phone jack. You will work it out

        • @pacsman: many thanks, will do

    • +1

To put in the new RAM sticks you push it in and it snaps back into place. Any video on the internet will make it clear and easy.
Also slide the bottom panel off through the headset port side and slide it back in that direction.

      • Thanks heaps !

  • I'm thinking of buying the Celeron one for my wife, but I'm a bit worried about the processor as we bought an HP Stream 13 in December and it has turned out to be very sluggish for basic tasks (i.e. browsing the web, watching SD videos in YouTube). I don't know if it's because of the 2Gb RAM or the N2840 processor (maybe both).

Considering that we'd want it to last for at least 2 to 3 years, would this one be a good choice (after the upgrades) or would we do better by spending the extra $100 or so and getting the i3 one (with 4GB RAM and regular HDD)?

    Thanks for any help.

    • +5

For what you want it for it a great laptop i have had many laptops and this is as zippy as any of them for general use. Just buy it and stick 4 gigs of ram and an ssd in that's enough i still have 2 gigs and an ssd and its surprisingly fast.

    • +3

4GB RAM and an SSD will make this Acer excellent. Browsing the web, emails and watching videos takes up RAM not processing power.
Combined with an SSD it will be much faster than an i3 with a mechanical HDD. The Acer also has a decent screen and great compact build quality. The i3 would use more electricity and run hotter.

Open up the expanded Task Manager in your HP Stream 13 and monitor the "Performance" tab to see if anything's getting maxed out.

  • +1

Upgraded the 2 I bought for the kids with 4GB RAM and 120GB Patriot SSD. Grabbed the CD keys before the swap and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 to get rid of all the ACER bloat.

Anyone else installed Win 10 and managed to find all the drivers? Not stopping the use of the laptop but there are a couple of not recognised devices, one which is the i2c HID mouse driver, so I had to put the touchpad into basic mode in the bios to get it to work.

Incidentally, boot time from power button pressed to login screen is 6 seconds. Not bad for a sub $300 laptop, probably about $220 once the parts are sold!

    • do you mean just download a win 10 with bing and install it on SSD with CD Keys from laptop bottom?
if i have installed the win8.1 on hdd and now want to swap to win SSD with win 10, can i still just the steps above?

      • +1

As far as I know, Win 10 is just developer preview until later this month. By all accounts Windows 8.1 with Bing will have a free upgrade to Windows 10, and from memory, these laptops will just upgrade to 10 once it's released.

I wanted to get rid of all the Acer bloatware so I just installed Windows 10 developer preview. It's not concrete yet, but the info available says that once Windows 10 is released, you will be able to apply for a new Windows 10 key using your old Windows 8.1 one and then add the key to the developer preview and the correct features will be enabled/disabled depending on your version.

Whether this is the best path or if a complete re-install would be better will be seen once it's officially released, but given how close we are to release date it's probably a safe bet that if you install the latest version now it's going to be pretty close to the final version. Windows 10 must be RTM by now.

Last thing is that there are no cd-keys on a sticker on the laptop, so be sure to get them from your hard drive before removing it. You can use a few different programs to get them after removed, but it's easier to get them before the upgrade.

  • Any deals on 4GB RAM anywhere?

    • +1

MSY has 4G Single 1600 Patriot-1.35v for $40 ok price.

      • Thanks.

Those in need of a cheap 128gb ssd

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198395

    $61 delivered :)

  • how do some basic games like hearthstone play on it? (or dota2/starcraft2)

    • +2

I'd say you probably have a chance at running hearthstone passably, although I don't think dota or starcraft would run near close to playable even on lowest settings - the graphics just aren't there.

Used $250 voucher which I bought for $231.25 (7.5% discount) and paid rest $3.3 ING paywave.

turned out just less than $200. After installing the SSD, the laptop works perfect. laptop is so light and portable.

    Thank you for the post!

    • What $250 voucher are you talking about?

Edit: oh you must be talking about purchasing a JB-Hifi gift card from woolies using your 7.5% off big w egift card..

      • Sorry,

My employment benefits gives me discounts for Jbhifi Vouchers.

Just visited a store and purchased a voucher using my ipad and show the voucher to the staff.

  • +1

How does this thing run excel after all the upgrades? Read through the whole entire thread and I'm surprised to see no mention of excel!

The main concern I have is still the software and people saying that it's hard to reinstall clean.. But I'll probably still give it a shot.

Mofos at Harvey Norman Auburn won't price match due to being "below cost price". This being said even though they are currently selling it below cost price anyway (cost price: ~$380, selling price ~$318, ticket price ~$417).

Pretty sure they can't refuse a price match just because it's under cost price. Yes I understand they're losing money, but they're covered by a blanket price match policy which is consistent across all franchises. I'll try my luck tomorrow before the JB-Hifi offer ends at another branch. No doubt I'll be writing to complain to head office.

    • +1

I got them to price match on their chat service online, just had to give them the JB link and they gave me a coupon to order online with then pick up later

      • Oh what so you can even order it online? That is very handy…
I would've done what other people said (similar to you) about getting online chat to issue a "receipt" which you can take in-store to price-match but I have no printer :(

        • +1

Yeah, once they give you the coupon it's just like a regular purchase. If you choose click and collect instead of shipping you just need to show them the confirmation email on your phone.
If you do do this though make sure you point out JBs 1 year warranty to the person on chat too.

        • +2

@shapers: 1 year warranty as opposed to?
Also, just tried. Can't price match because it's not listed on Harvey Norman's website at all.

        • @illumination: Ohh, sorry didn't realise they had removed it from their site

      • It's not listed on HN website. I've had no luck with chat keep saying we don't have that model online.

  • 2 questions:
    1) What's the battery life like?
    2) What's the keyboard like?

    • +1

      1) very good as CPU is so low powered and it doesn't run very hot
      2) I like the keyboard but would be better if it was backlit

      • I assume it has wired LAN, is it gigabit?

        • +1

          Yes & yes.

  • Since I couldn't get the Slatebook I'll take this instead and it'll be much better with the Sandisk SSD. Good idea to claim on tax too :)

  • +1

Been able to price-match with Harvey Norman @ Ryde. Added an extra one year warranty of $29 and a $20 Trend Micro Mobile Security ($0 after cashback) to make it just over $300 to activate the Amex deal… :) Happy customer

    • price matched with an unhappy hn manager, added an navig8r of $58 and used amex deal

    • Hi Kskh954, just wondering which HN did you go and get price match ? I just phoned the HN @ Domayne North Ryde 2113 and the staff checked their system and couldn't find this particular model in their system. Thanks in advance.

  • Acer ES1-411-C1WD 14" Notebook $214.30 (after $39 Cashback) @ JB Hi-Fi - Wifi connection was really bad, kept dropping out of home wireless network every 5 minutes. This seems to be very popular with Acer's low price range on Windows 8. Since I don't have time to muck around to fix this and heading overseas in a month time, I don't dare to take this trouble with me around the world, so definitely will bring it back to JB Hifi today!

    • +3

I dont have wifi problems at all

      • +1

        Same here.

  • +2

I wonder how many of the "wifi problems" I read about could be cured
    in windows power options.

I would guess at around 95%.

    • +2

I was thinking the same, any chance of checking advanced options for the cards config and making sure it's set to never sleep, or at least to minimise roaming etc…

Found similar issue in with some Dell low cost laptops where disconnections were frequent, changing the config of the card seems to fix a lot of that..

      • +2

Indeed … and they also don't realise that "allowing automatic updates" is likely to cause more harm than good.

  • Anyone can confirm what type of touchpad it is? I have a handwriting software needs synaptics to run.

  • Anyone recommend a good cheap/free anti virus? Something that doesn't install all this extra rubbish that slows the laptop down!

  • +1

Good cheap lappy for the young daughter.

  • +1

Showing as $298 on their website

    • Yeh, they had a laptop sale a few days ago.

  • +1

Even at this price this is still a good deal with the cashback. The performance is surprisingly good in stock form without the mentioned upgrades. It boots up in around 20 seconds even before bloat ware is un installed.

I compared the listed Acer ES1-411-C1WD in stock standard form with spinning hhd, 2GB ram and all bloatware still present, against another Acer V5 with a i3 3227u and a Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB installed in a Sata 3 connection with 8GB ram and also running W8.1. Boot up time is almost even, go figure.

Obviously in other task you will notice a difference, but you can not complain about out of box performance for this very low priced computer with extra improved performance potential.

Also again to re confirm, this model is the thinner one, 25mm front and back, and weighs only 1.8 kg.

Keyboard and even the mouse work well enough at for most laptops/ultrabooks under $800, if only it was backlit ( dreaming at this price ).

Oh, I don't want to brag here, but I actually got in early with the HP Slatebook thanks to a returned favour from one of the Ozbargain community classics before it was posted here on OZB., and received my order.

For the price it is an unusually funky looking unit with full HD Touchscreen running Android more used as a consumption tinkering toy, but I would say for most peoples use, this Acer would be much more useful and versatile.
Even the screen on the Acer is actually good and even comparable to the HP's Slatebook.

  • If a decision had to be made between upgrading the HDD to SDD or RAM from 2GB to 8GB, what would it be?

    • +2

I asked a similiar question. General consensus is sdd upgrade will show greatest improvement

  • Hi guys, I don't have much experience with computers, I have bought the correct 8gb ram and a 128gb SSD, but I can't load the Acer Recovery Management, it prompts me to make changes to my computer but doesn't load at all. I've read the comments about using the Bing iso, how does this work? I'm not sure what I should do. Please help. Thanks

    • +1

Had the exact same problem.. so,
I used Acronis True image to clone the original Hdd and transfer everything to the SSD .. it automatically resizes the partitions for you as well.
Once cloned and the SSD installed into the machine I would recommend you reinstall the Operating system and start from Scratch..

It was easy enough to remove most bloatware afterwards as well.. starting with McAfee AV. And the crap games ..

      • Thanks bazzazz. Did you connect the SSD with a cable, I was planning on using a usb to boot the laptop. Sorry I don't really know what I'm doing, do I need to purchase Windows and reinstall?

        • +1

I had to do the cloning on another computer . I connected both HDD 's to the other computer ..i used a USB HDD dock for one HDD and connected the other via a sata connection and then ran the Acronis software.
But I should point out a bit of know how is highly recommended as you could end up wiping the original drive and cause more problems for yourself.

        • @bazzazz: Yeah I think I could do that okay, to clone the disk I need a full-version of Acronis though, the free trial doesn't allow disk cloning?

  • I ummed and ahhed too much, this deal likely to come around again soon?

  • Yep, finished on Tuesday. But even at the current price of $299 after the cashbak, in my opinion it is still well worth it. Not a lot comes close for this performance in a thin, light compact design.

  • Anyone with this laptop having issues with igfxEM module having high CPU usage? (~30%)

I've done a search on google and have not found a fix to this sadly :(

    • Neither of my (2) laptops have this issue.

Having no idea what that even is, a wild guess would be it is associated to Acer bloat not cleaned off completely? Did you do a fresh install? That would rule that theory out. Decrap should also rule it out but nothing beats fresh installs IMHO.

      • Might do a fresh install however am unsure about whether the touchpad drivers will work as some have mentioned that it was an issue.

        Did you have any issues?

        • You may come across minor issues but nothing to worry about.

When you download the drivers, ignore TouchPad_ELANTECH, because your touchpad is installed using IO Drivers_Intel - the Elantech drivers are buggy for this model.

Once you complete all the windows updates you may find your touchpad stops working, this is caused by an optional Intel driver update, don't fear, if you install it you just go to your Device Manager and find the exclamation mark <!> and click Roll Back Driver, touchpad now fixed.

    • +1

I have read that this issue is fixed by installing the latest graphics drivers (which is what igfxem is part of).

      https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=N2940

      • Thanks will give it at try!

However am heavily considering a fresh install now.

        • Fresh certainly is best if you don't mind doing it. Seems daunting at first if you're new to it but it's really about as easy as an install of windows gets. Your product key will be automatically detected (provided you are using the 8.1 "BING" iso, don't proceed with any other version or you'll get nowhere fast!) and then install the Acer drivers, run Windows Update, happy days.

        • @Click_It:

Yep sounds easy enough. Where did you get the acer drivers from? The official site?
