3G isn't for everyone, so here's a bit of info around the limitations.

Wi-Fi

A Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Voyage with Wi-Fi is a great choice if you already have a high-speed internet connection and wireless router set up in your home. If you do not have Wi-Fi set up at home, a 3G model may be a better option—3G connectivity lets you download books anytime, anywhere.

Wi-Fi + free 3G

A model with Wi-Fi + free 3G is the easiest option because there is no wireless setup—you are ready to shop, purchase, and read right out of the box. Built-in free 3G connectivity uses the same wireless signals that cell phones use, but there are no monthly fees or commitments—Amazon pays for 3G wireless connectivity. The added convenience of 3G enables you to download books anytime, anywhere, without having to find a Wi-Fi hotspot connection. Your Kindle may use wireless connectivity to make other services available, such as wireless delivery of personal documents, which may require an additional charge. For more information, see Wireless Terms and Conditions

With wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, 3G lets you download books anytime, anywhere, whether you're relaxing on a beach, halfway through a hike, or waiting on the tarmac.

For U.S. customers traveling abroad, additional charges apply for wireless delivery of periodical subscriptions. To avoid any charges, you can always use a Wi-Fi connection or download items via your computer and transfer them to your Kindle using USB.

  • Do these need screen protectors given they are touchscreen?

    • +1

I've had a Paperwhite for a couple of years and the screen still doesn't have a scratch on it, so wouldn't be overly worried about that.

  • are these the same as the ones that were going for $109 a few days ago?

    • This one has 3G + Wifi

    • Where-as the other one was WiFi only

    • -1

just reading through the comments in the previous deal, it seemed most got the 3G version even though they paid for the wifi!

      • It seems that one person lucked out with a 3G version, certainly not most of them.

      • I got the $109 model , I was given a WiFi model not a 3G . Really lucky ones must have got the 3G model

I don't see 3g as a huge value add for the paperwhite anyway , coz the number of times I may use it is so low , I can't justify extra $50 or so bucks . .

Yeah I agree. This is best for travellers. It's just the cheapest price I've seen this and thought it'd be helpful for a couple.

        • @93matt: I agree with ur deal listing mate , it is a bargain certainly :)

Just not my cup of tea :)

p.s +1 for the deal for saving $$$ off the normal price

  • What else can you use this for besides reading books?

    • Cookbooks, instructionals, PDF's etc. Pretty much just for reading :)

Paperweight, vanity purchase, weak skateboard, terrible pillow.

Lucky enough to get the DSE $109 deal. Still a bargain if you missed that deal. Good piece of kit but people will need to make their own mind up if the 3G is worth it.

  • How do you tell if it is "NextGen"? I have 2 (wifi only) and neither said next gen on any packaging or instructions or in the unit itself.
