Features

The advantage of cool & quiet

Heat has a large impact on the overall reliability of a HDD’s life over time. It can also lead to increased power consumption, the requirement of additional fans and increased fan operation, increased noise levels and the increased chance of failure. WD Green drives come equipped with WD GreenPower Technology which allows the drive to operate cooler with increased overall reliability.

Power management with performance

Best-in-class power management, reduced heat output, and next-generation technologies such as IntelliSeek offer a perfect balance of performance and power, making WD Green a leader in performance when compared to the competition with our 6 TB HDD.

Reliability with an increased lifespan

Quiet acoustics, reduced vibration and advanced 4K HDD formatting makes WD Green a stronger solution when compared to the competition and perfect for PCs and external drive applications. WD Green also features a Dual Stage Actuator, which delivers higher precision motion for 2X the data performance and increases drive reliability.

Capacity storage

Large capacity offerings of up to 6 TBs help expand customer capabilities and application usage of WD Green including primary installations in desktop PCs, as secondary storage in external cases or as reliable backup storage.
Next-generation technology

Reduced power consumption, improved data tracking, and WD GreenPower Technology all help to improve the overall reliability of WD Green making it an efficient solution that lowers your total cost of ownership. NoTouch Ramp Load Technology also protects the drive by ensuring the recording head never touches the disk media, reducing wear and tear to the head and increases drive reliability.
Easy upgrade

Acronis True Image, available as a download on the WD Support website, enables you to clone or copy all your data to a new drive so you don't have to reinstall your operating system and applications to get all the benefits of a new drive.

The WD advantage

WD puts our products through extensive Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T.) prior to any product launch. Normally $129 at Umart

    Not a bad deal.

  • Good deal, but I don't rate WD Greens because of the 5-10 second spin up time. Frustrating even if I just use it for media and file storage.

    • Just don't spin down then, or set the time-out to something longer, so it only needs to spin up around once a day.

WD Green drives are notorious for their autoparking.

They auto park after about 8 seconds. Leaving them on 24x7 results in a very high cycle count, they have a finite cycle count and failure due to over parking is NOT covered by warranty.

    • Good deal, but I don't rate WD Greens because of the 5-10 second spin up time.

No difference between Greens and other internal 3.5" drives in this respect. The spin-down behaviour is set by the OS, while spin-up time for Greens is much the same as others.

It's aggressive head parking that sets the Green drives apart. Can cause a momentary (fraction of a second) but nevertheless annoying delay when accessing non-cached data.

  • 3TB drives seem to have higher than average failure rates according to the data here:

    https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-update…
    https://www.backblaze.com/blog/best-hard-drive/

Not unbuyably high (~7-8%/year for 3TB WD, vs 1-3% for say 4TB overall across brands) but still worth keeping in mind. Also, the data I reference is for a different model, so this may not be applicable, but it more depends on which factory it comes from, rather that the model. One of the reason I picked up a 4TB instead recently.

    • I'm surprised to see that the WD Red has a annual fail rate of 8 percent, despite being a drive built for NAS applications. I expected slightly less than that.

That makes me worried, I've got a 2TB and 3TB WD Red in my main pc…

      • Don't worry too much. 7% in the broad scheme of things is not huge, and in most cases you can get the vast majority of your data (if not all) off it before it becomes unreadable. I've had 3 hard drives fail (out of ~10), that's unlucky in itself but only 1 of those just abruptly refused to read (a Samsung), and that was years ago. The rest started giving read issues but I didn't lose anything.

  • Can you put this in an enclosure?

    • definitely can..afaik these drives are marked more as a desktop machine drives than anything so general use are more recommended rather than putting these on a NAS.

      • So they would be good for storage of movies music and other things with music and movies being used regularly?
I prefer external as when i go away i take it with me connected to a laptop at night for something to watch.

        • yup, should be ok. I've been using a 1TB WD Green drive for around 3 years on an enclosure myself and no issues so far.

        • @blahoz: ok awesome

Just one final question is it free shipping or not?

it comes to $106 then it shows $9 shipping but it doesnt add that $9 to the balance due.

          is it $106 shipped or?
i dont want to click confirm and process order if it's $106 + $9 postage as thats not that much of a bargain when msy is 129 and just down the road.

        • @holden93:

Reading the title, yes it should be inclusive of shipping. There's a breakdown of the costs in the post below yours started by random451. You have to register and log in to an account, otherwise the code will not be accepted.

        • @blahoz: i just bought it and only $106.10 came out of my bank account.

          so thats good.

  • I get $116:

    • You forgot to apply the coupon "NEW10OFF".

      • Ah, I did, but it wouldn't apply it until I logged in

  • Will this fit/work in a PS4?

    • +2

No, it won't, sorry dude. This is a 3.5" drive and the PS4 requires a 2.5" drive. Apparently there's a product called the Nyko Databank that lets you use 3.5" drives (http://www.nyko.com/products/product-detail/?name=Data+Bank+…) but you'd have to look it up for more info.

    • +1

Just buy a 2.5" directly. It will cost you just a few dollars more for a 2 TB drive which is more than enough.

    • you need this one.
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Seagate-Hard-Drive-2TB-Backup…

I've installed this hdd to my ps4 and all good working.

      • +1

Thanks for the heads up. My PS4 is full, need more space if I want to buy more games!

        • You definitely need more space. I upgraded my PS4 hdd the week after i purchase it. i knew 500gb won't be enough

  • thx op just got 2.
    $35 a TB is a bargain !!

Expect more sales on these older drives in the near future. 3TB looks tame next to the 6, 8TB options and 10TB coming soon.

Not saying it's junk because it's smaller but it is a fair way behind the pack now - expect more bargains on left over stock.

    • everything gets cheaper if you wait but right now this is a decent price.

      • In the case of SE it does not. Take the HP N54l for example. SE have increased the price of their old stock which has the 2gb of RAM.

I have x3 WD green drives on my desk right now. All have failed. I would not recommend Greens. I would pay the extra and get the Reds instead.

    • +2

3TB seems to be the curse of HDD capacities. Seagates were the worst but WD had its share of failures too.

Here come a few more negs

    • +2

Its worth mentioning as well, in my experience Shopping Express has terrible after sales service. If you need warranty on these SE will probably get you to go though the manufacturer rather than themselves. Thats what they did with me with my DOA product.

  • I added one to my cart and applied the coupon. It showed the $106 price. Went to pay by paypal. It then took me back to SE website asking for further address etc details and saying order not complete until info provided. But showed a price of $115. The line item for the coupon was showing 10% discount for the hdd but they had added $9.50 Aus Post courier cost which wasn't dedcucted. Too much effort to continue with. Had bought one from MSY that I hadn't opened and was going to return but doesn't seem worth the effort given the discount is not working properly.

  • When trying to apply the code it's now saying "Special Discount 'NEW10OFF' is invalid." unfortunately. Must be expired.
