You can not convert or add it to your google play credit balance. When you purchase a app/game you can select an option to charge it to your Telstra credit.

  • Such a good deal. I love ozbargain.

  • I've read the wiki and I can't find anything in there regarding this question (though I could be blind)…

If I have 2 packs - can I transfer $29 of credit to 1 sim and have a balance of $59 and then use that $59 to buy a $50 6 month 5GB data pass?

    • +3

      @frig

Have a look at whirlpool…interesting stuff happening regarding data pass data

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1207893&…

      • +2

        Thanks for that link.

All this info is doing my head in.

    • +1

      It's all new.
Updated that Wiki section on 13/5, 1 day after launch.

Haven't been on Whirlpool for days. A lot has changed. People are testing out the system ;-)

Last week, opinion was Data Pass has to be bought with cash, not credit.

What could be done with credit transfer was unknown.

Data Pass is a big change.

Anyone can add details to the Wiki.

    • Post a screenshot proof if that what anyone has done. Until then I just defer to Vodafone [2x $15 packs, ±$1T.Promo] thats the only game in town for 16 days unlimited data 14 hours phone access across 8w. Rather easier and more use

  • +1

    So the method is

    1) take one $30 telstra stater register as a Data sim note it's mobile number
    2) register a second sim as Long life
    3) creditme2u from the phone sim to the data sim in $1 lots up to $10 per day
    4) profit = 27Gb for $2 outlay

    Thanks

    • @ iratepirate

      ;)

    • Once registered as a data sim, can you use it in your smartphone to also receive calls and texts?

      • @ rdaun

Yes- just can't call out (just txt)

      • Covered in Telstra Starter Pack Wiki.

      • They hold the right to charge it back@200¢per Mbyte though, also known as pay-as-you-go rate, outside of a tab use registered. Well, unless bonus data is immune for this ltd fone tip.

I considered too but phone no. won't report outbound for SkypeOut.

    • You've tested this in last week on new Data Pass?

What's the expiry on the added data?
How long does $1 credit extend expiry?

Data Pass adds a set amount of data for a set time.
The $1 Starter Pack set up as $30 Data Pass has 30 day expiry.

Buying 1GB with $1 credit… that's seems a glitch in the system. Discussed on Whirlpool. No one knows if the data will be clawed back.

Good if confirmed & data remains.

    • Very succinct summary. Nice.

      So then…

      5) do a $50 recharge to get 1 year expiry on the lot?

      • You'd have to amass a lot of data to make it worthwhile.

And keep recharging to keep the data. Data Pass is use or lose, unless you recharge.

For instance $50 = 50 $1 SIMs with standard 3GB per SIM gives 150GB (after buying a lot of groceries). And you use the data when you want until early 2017.

I use about 2.5GB/month, or $12/yr on the Woolies & Coles $1 SIMs. No good for me, & I've already got $60 credit sitting on LongLife-Simplicity.

It's all about the expiry date unless you use a lot of data per month. Adding data I may not need or lose is not good use of the credit. Paying Telstra to store my data credit also does not make sense for a low data user.

So maybe good for high users.

But paying to store that data that Telstra could take back may be risky.

It would leave you with credit that can't be transferred (info from last week which may not be up to date!) just spent on Google Play.

So seems to suit high data users, not low ones like me.

Off to do some research on Whirlpool.

      • +1

I'll wait to see what they do about the bonus data. If i get to keep the 30gb i've recharged so far i'll lock it in with a 365 day $50 for 5Gb recharge on the last day of the data expiry.

I've spent the transfered credit on google play books and music so lets see what happens. I guess they'll do the sums on how much it will cost them (not much it's mobile data) vs. how much it costs them to reverse.

        • So the expiry date is still 30 days after the CreditMe2u transfers?

        • The data expires 30 days from the date that the Data Sim was first registered, unless you recharge to make it roll over or with $50 for 365 days /$140 for 24 months.

The Creditme2u money (that you can buy google play with up to $19.90 per purchase) gets its expiry extended but I don't know how long for with each recharge. When i go to m.telstra.com on the phone with the sim in it says this credit doesn't expire until September.

        • @iratepirate:
          Thanks IP

          So to clarify…
          there are 2 expiry dates.

One for data (still the 30 days that was initially set up with the $1 $30 Starter Pack)

And another expiry date on the credit, which has increased with CreditMe2u transfers)

Discussion on Whirlpool earlier was that credit could not be transfered off the Data Pass, but could be used for Google Play, as you've done.

          Have I got that correct?
I usually like to check this myself, but am not connecting a Telstra SIM on data until end of month.

CreditMe2u is often used with other plans to keep credit or data alive - extending expiry by a maximum of 14 days if applied on last possible day.

Too early to know if that works yet, but would be handy. Some on grandfathered iPad Plans have kept them alive for a very long time with $1 CreditMe2u transfers on expiry date every 14 days.

          I'd like a 14 day extension & 1GB for $1 credit ;-)

        • @brucefromaustralia: reading between the lines, if minimum cm2u went up $9, then multiple glitches will closed.

And is 32 gig really cheap in risky terms [$15+$15.+$50] — that about matches what I have access to convert bimonthly on the better streaming network (thx to weekend and 2x cap$40 VHA) minus the Skype caller ID/backup circuit switched calls. Google Play does however make it appealing.

        • @daver:
I think quite a few OzBargainers will be using their credit on Play. Activating a Data SIMs previously gave no credit.

Doesn't seem to suit a rare Play user & fairly low data user like me.

But Telstra will get hammered by high data users at this price.

Current price (after shopping for groceries) is [$1+$1 (+$50 if want to last 1 year)] so stock up.

Of course this generous offer of $1/GB probably won't exist for long.

Low risk at $2 & activating the phone SIM on FREEDOM Plan gives extra data, included capped calls, & free call options (eg 6pm-6am) anyway.

    • A few explanations & suggestion for using the credit transfer outlined by iratepirate.

Data Pass is very new, so information is still coming in, and how it will work over time is untested.

Someone found transferring $1 credit increases data available by 1GB, while adding that $1 to the credit on the SIMs account.

Credit transferred onto Data Pass can't be transferred out again. It's available use seems limited to Google Play purchases, or wasting it at $2/MB when the Data Pass expires.

Credit is transferred using CreditMe2u from the phone plan. On a mobile, phone #100#, select 1 RECHARGE, then 6 CreditMe2u, enter phone number of Data Pass SIM, select $ amount.
      Otherwise use the internet.
Details at Telstra or the Wiki here.

There is a 25c credit fee for every CreditMe2u transfer. So $5 does 4 $1 transfers. $30 credit transfers $24 credit of 24 $1 with a $10/day limit. That translates as 24GB, plus the original 3GB when the SIM was set up on Data Pass = 27GB.

PHONE PLANS to activate for $30 credit to transfer to the Data Pass SIM…
I'd recommend activating the Starter Pack as FREEDOM.

It gives you more benefit. You still have $30 credit to transfer, PLUS $220 capped calls, 1.3GB, and free calls options. Lasts around 28+ days against 6 months on LongLife. Cant see any down side, just benefit with that plan choice.

Longlife should only be activated for use of included credit over a much longer period. But the Data Pass expires in 30 days, unless you make a relatively expensive recharge.

This information is contained in the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki.

      • Thanks.
        Is this confirmed?

        • +1

          Well I haven't yet.

But plenty on Whirlpool have transferred $1 for 1GB + 3day expiry extension.

Credit is transferred from wherever you have real (not bonus) credit. So any plan that leaves you with real credit (FREEDOM, SIMPLICITY, LONGLIFE) - choose the one with maximum benefit. FREEDOM includes $220 cap calls, free call options, 1.3GB, etc more than LONGLIFE. The choice is yours.

LONGLIFE only has 1 benefit - 6 months expiry with $30. It's a parking space for credit. I've got $60 stashed away there.

Plus, Telstra stuffed up a Starter Pack activation (gave away phone number), so I could use that to recharge my LONGLIFE for another 6 months & add another $30 credit to my retained credit.

LONGLIFE is then changed to SIMPLICITY plan for 15c/min calls on the same credit.

I've written about these in the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki.

Whether Telstra takes back all you ill gotten data - time will tell.

  • Original discussion in this deal about Data Pass on 13/5, plus some comments with links to Data Pass information & discussions

That formed the basis of the Wiki update. Things have changed in 1 week.

  • The most appropriate place to discuss the new Data Pass plan is to create a Forum to discuss it, with

Title: new Telstra Data Plus Plans (or similar)
    Discussion Category: Mobile.
Adding this current discussion, info from whirlpool, and these links.

That should attract a broader discussion than here. Should be of broad interest.

Data Pass has been discussed in Telstra 4G Prepaid Data Packs: 5GB Annual Pass $50, 16GB 2 Year Pass $140 + Roll over Unused Data. There was discussion if it was better to discuss as a Forum.

But Whirlpool discussion is the place to go for latest info. You will have to go back a fair few pages to follow the development. Discussion started around 13/5.

(Also $1 deal Whirlpool discussion start)

Once the details are sorted out, a summary will be added to the Telstra Starter Pack Guide Wiki for future reference.

So who wants to start a Forum?
(I don't have a strong personal motivation to post it. I rarely read or participate in Forums. You need to be motivated & interested as a primary reason for posting a Forum discussion.)

  • Worked this deal easy as at Coles Mclaren Vale. Purchased my items through the 12 items or less check out. Then asked for one at the end and only $1. Excellent!

  • Bugger forgot about this today, spent $50 and could have gotten another one lol.

  • +2

    I'm up to 10… :0

    • The only thing stopping me from buying more than my meagre 4, is a full fridge & cupboards :-(
(Already had 6 unused from Woolies $1 deal, which at the end required no $30 spend.)

With so many targeted instant $10/$5 off $30 spend at Woolies (4 in last week alone), & ($30 cash back + $10 off $100 first free delivery offer, paid with $50 free credit from previous offer + FlyBuys credit) from Coles my kitchen can't take it any more ;-)

After all, in years of using them, I've never spent more than $10 for these Starter Packs, & never bought a recharge for an activated SIM.

So I'd prefer an instant discount at Woolies, & discount + cash back from Coles spend.

Show me the money, not the SIM.

      • -1

You could always buy a single $30 item, get the sim and then return the item.

        • +1

Just don't tell everyone that ;-)

(Seems the morals hit squad didn't like your suggestion.)

The receipt will show the deal. Unless the staff member misses the "loyalty discount -$29" - at the bottom of a 2 item receipt, you won't win!

I had a reputation within my friends for tricks like that in my Uni days…

Would buy at one store at a dramatic discount & return to another store for for up to 10 times the credit, then buy something there at a discount &… the cycle continued.

My friends said all stores within 100km should be issued with my photo ;-)

But I'm now reformed. Trust me :-)

These days I get it to easy - stores accidentally give me too much with my orders or genuine refunds.
Last month Woolies gave me $100RRP of smoked salmon - my favourite, & earlier Aldi gave me $100 too much when returning a faulty TV.
Protection money is such an ugly term ;-)
          Capisce?

    • +2

My unused SIM inventory, all from OzBargain deals:
10 Telstra Starter Pack $1 each
1 Telstra Starter Pack $10 from 2013 - so expensive!
1 Telstra Starter Pack $10 from 2013 - (stored as $30 with Telstra when they stuffed up activation)
1 Telstra iPad Starter Pack 50c
10 Vodafone 3GB data $9 each including USB Extreme modem
3 Vodafone $50 packs with 3GB bought with $40 Huawei Y550 phones - 2 free from grateful friends I put onto that deal
A few Optus $10 Starter Packs free
Plus an assortment of $2 type SIMs given to me free.

      • Good effort. Something to aspire to haha

        • +1

I still think 10 in just over a week is a great job :-)
          (And a lot of groceries.)

It's taken a very long time over many deals to amass my stockpile.

It's OzBargain, I'm still an amateur here. There are OzBargainers out there who will scoff at my measly pile, my precious ;-)

    • Hi, do you scan your flybys card at the same time? or not worry?

I read it was limited to 1 per customer… or does it still work anyway!?

      • +1

Still works anyway. I did two in a row on the same FlyBuys card - same staff member. No worries.

  • Clarification if I use creditme2U to transfer to data pass once I recharge with 50 bucks will, all the data rollover to the twelve month expiry or does it get taken away thanks

    • +2

I did a $50 recharge and all my data listed has been given 12 month expiry.

  • +2

Just bought a starter pack from Coles Carindale with a $30 Telstra voucher. Also saw an advertising sign confirming the deal and expiry date of 26th of May.

    • Good to know there's stock at my local. Was there a few days ago, staff couldn't find stock. Another staff member pulled out 10 each of phone & tablet packs. Still plenty of stock after those!

  • Question for Bruce and others: With the transferring credit using creditme2u, and it extending expiry by up to 14 days: If I have a SIM on the FREEDOM plan, which has the $220 of included cap credit, and I transfer $1 to that SIM, does the remainder of the $220 cap credit also have its expiry date extended by 14 days? E.g. if I had used $100 of the cap credit, transfer $1 using creditme2u, would then I have another 14 days to use the remaining $120 of cap credit? Because if so, that could be mighty handy … and it makes me think my next phone should be a dual SIM phone, to support 2 Telstra SIMs.

    • I can't answer, as I only used Freedom once. $1 for 28 days! It's a wee bit expensive for my frugal tastes ;-)

[I should know, because I operate an informal 'credit transfer service' for another OzBargainer to keep their FREEDOM alive every 14 days ;-) I receive $2 credit for a $1 CreditMe2u. I'll be rich in Telstra credit one day. But don't tell anyone… it sounds a bit like money laundering ;-) ]

Others with more experienced of Freedom may help.

Don't forget to transfer your $30 credit at start of use. So many people fail to use their credit.

I'm on a $2/year Telstra set up with 400 minutes of calls from my number I've had for years. Otherwise I operate off cheapish data, for calls, etc.

I carry 2 smart phones - both $40 4G, 1 for data, 1 for calls - mainly incoming. Can then use both on free WiFi at places like Regus Business Lounges.

    • I'm fairly sure that a creditme2u transfer only extends unused recharge credit, included cap credit and bonuses does not get extended by creditme2u afaik.

  • -1

[BNE] [BRISBANE] $30 Telstra Phone Starter Kit - WANTED

Looking to buy more and willing to share the discount with you.

  • +1

Run out of things to buy at Coles. 5 Sims now though ^_^

  • EDIT: Can do up to $10 transfer in 24 hour period from one sim at a time… means you could potentially accumulate A LOT of data on to a data plan recipient SIM.

  • Still on today?

    • It is still on today.

    • according to the OP today is the last day.
Wonder which store will have the $1 deal next??

      • Maybe Woolies :-)

  • If I buy the tablet sim card can I use it as a mobile?

    • Yes, if it fits.
Also depends on what you select when you activate it.

      • I mean instead of the data only plans I want to choose the freedom plan?

  • When your main SIM runs out of credit, you can either
    1. port your number to Optus and then port back to another Telstra $30 starter kit OR
    2. Activate the 2nd starter kit and use credit me2u to transfer $29 (over 3 days) to the main Sim.

    Which option has more benefits?

    Thanks

    • Porting out & back - means you can keep the same number. That's handy for phone calls, but pretty useless for Data, unless you want incoming calls & SMS.

As I discussed, there are sometimes free sims available (port out & back same day as I usually do). Other suggestions in the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki.

It depends how many Telstra & other SIMs you have, what they cost, what you are using them for, and possibly the benefits of the plan chosen with each SIM.

No simple answer. There are many variables/ options.

Over many years, I have done both, depending on the benefits each time. The only constant is - I never recharge.

      • Thanks Bruce.
        I have a few $2 optus sim that I got for 50cents.
Not as good as free, but close.

If I use CM2u and transfer $29 to main sim.
How much data and calls do I get?
I am on Freedom nights for main sim.

Can I still use the $29 on Google play from the main sim?

The porting out and in option seems to be better due to the glitch?
After porting in, you can cm2u the $24 into a data broadband sim and have 24GB extra.

You can then recharge $50 to get 1 year expiry date on the MBB sim.
Seems to good to be true?

        Thanks.

        • My head hurts with all the possibilities. Those discount $2 will be useful to keep number, but can't see any other benefit.

My comment on recent free SIMs for porting

Yes, $29 over 3 CreditMe2u can be used for Play.

For tricks to get longer use with multiple SIMs, see the Freedom+ method in the Wiki. My budget system is a variation of that, listed below that.

Haven't looked at that section of the Wiki for over a year. Just did a quick update ;-)

That's that the wiki is for.

  • +5

Just got back from my llast coles mission. I've become an expert at buying non-perishable items which total between $30 and $31. 15 sims is a solid haul. Thanks for the heads up and moral support, gang.

    • You're kidding! I now feel inadequate with my measly 6.

      • Yeah I only got 7, and I was trying too! 15 is quite impressive!

    • please share your purchased items.

I have run out of items to buy at 6 different purchases over a week.

      • Haha I've got it all! All the 1/2 price specials. I basically did the $250 weekly shop day by day on the way back from work.

    • I managed to get about 15 as well over the course of this deal. Now, with all the prepaid sims I've been activating, along with all the existing data sims I had, I'm wondering if I hit some kind of limit of prepaid sim activations, as I'm now getting a

"Sorry, Pre-Paid activation is currently unavailable. We're working hard to make things better. You may still be able to activate your new Pre-Paid service. Here's how:
Chat online to a consultant. We're available 24x7.
      Call us on 125 8887
      Visit a Telstra store"

This is on the 19th SIM that will be on my telstra account. Wonder if its just because the system is down for maintenance(around 1am here) or maybe I hit some kinda limit.

    • You guys are lucky to get many of them! I only got one but I think that was the one and only pack my local Coles had during the promotion period. Period.

    • +1

i ended up with 10 sims, a lot of food both here and in the work freezer. Cleaning products and batteries too.
Don't think i could handle it if Woolies does their $1 sim promo next.

  • +1

Just happened to see this last Thu at Coles Eastgarden. Proceeded to customer service desk with around 100$ receipt and ask for the SIM card, the gent said that I had to buy this WITHIN one groceries transaction, oh man :(

He obviously saved me 1 buck :))

    • Lol he could easily do it for you then

  • Not sure whether this should be asked here. I activated a starter kit which was expiring soon (from harvey norman sale). Activated as long life then switched to freedom anytime but don't see any of the bonuses come through. Anyone know why this might be the case?

    • u wont get any of the freedom bonuses unless you do a recharge (or u activate the starter kit and choose freedom at the start)

I think ur getting confused with switching between long life and simplicity

      • Thanks I am

  • Anyone not getting the 1GB with the credit me2u?

    • the 'glitch' already fixed :-( but its 500mb now, tried just now.. better than nothing :-)

      • Still pretty good in my opinion. If you got the $30 sim pack for $1, basically paying a buck for 12 GB of data. Even if you paid normal full price for the $30 sim pack, that works out to be ok prices for data ie. $30 for 12GB of data, around $2.50 a GB.

Hope this becomes permanent. Long live the "glitch"!

        • Huh? What have I missed. How do you get 12gb of data ? Quick explanation from anyone or do I need to trawl through the thread ? I'm guessing you can't get that and the $30 google play credit ? I think $1 for $30 google play credit is pretty sweet in its own right.

        • @belbo:

The glitch no longer gives 1GB per $1 transfer but 0.49GB per transfer
So pretty much instead of 24GB you will end up getting 12GB.

        • @belbo:

Go through this section of the comments: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/194025?page=4#comment-2768…

Doing it this way means you'll end up with 12GB of data(was 24GB of data during the full glitch ie. 1GB per $1 Creditme2u transfer) + $24 worth of google play credit on the mobile prepaid broadband sim.

This is of course assuming they don't alter the "glitch" any further.

        • @Kenb0:
          I explained the maths above
          $5 credit does 4 $1 transfers. $30 credit transfers $24 credit of 24 $1.

That translates as almost 12GB, plus the original 3GB when the SIM was set up on $30 Data Pass = 15GB, down from 27.

Plus the calls cap, data, free calls on the other $1 SIM you are transferring credit from, as I outlined.

          Still great for $2.

        • +1

          @brucefromaustralia:

Ya, I already had a separate SIM I used for data on my mobile router, so I didn't have to pay the extra $1 just for a new datapass sim with 3GB of data. Rather use that extra $1 for another freedom mobile sim to result in another 12GB of data :)

  • Still getting the approx 500MB.

Now what to do with the credit amassed on the broadband sim :S

Has anyone tried to stick it in a phone and credit me2u back to a phone sim - (or another data sim?)

  • "Message from your mobile service provider: User was not found" - I get this message just after I activate a SIM, however if I wait a few days the message goes away. How soon does Carrier Billing get enabled after activation? Does anyone know?
