  • Not too bad for 5 GeeBee

    • OK.

So, for our incoming-only Telstra PrePaid:

      • Can we buy these w/ $1 + our $139.84 of -accumulated- credit, via the Telstra 24x7 app (or at a Telstra shop)?

      • NOPE (only "Browse Data Packs" w/ COSTLY, old offers)

      • [ Hey, Telstra, -UPDATE- YOUR APP w/ these new prices! ]

In any case, does that app show data usage accurately?

Does Telstra charge by the Kb, or what?

PS If, in your area, actual/average 4G speeds aren't much faster than 3G:

      Virgin's standard 3G prices include:

      6 GB for $30 / mon = $5.00 / GB
      12 GB for $40 /mon = $3.33 / GB

      http://www.VirginMobile.com.au/tablet-plans/

So, these long Telstra deals might clog-up a Smartphone, & preclude use of competitor's data…? (UNLESS, of course, phone is Dual-SIM)

      • According to a Telstra Shop staffer, NOPE, my Phone service's accumulated $139.xx canNOT be used (with some pocket change) to get the 2 year deal.

TELSTRA, YOU DISAPPOINT ME AGAIN!!! :-(

        • Wait! There's more…

I found the CIS for this offering, & it gives prices for sending SMSs & MMSs.

Can anyone confirm that this works in a phone (as well as a tablet)?

    • +1

Does AmaySIM charge by KB blocks or, 1 MB blocks?

    • They look like the normal prices on their new plans….

So this post is just an announcement ?

  • -1

    What's the discount ?

    • +9

Old Price was $180/12GB/365 Days, this is $140/16GB/730 Days. I don't know what % more value you get but it is a huge improvement on Price and value, a minimum $40 saving. It is actually a deal because if you are on an old pre-paid plan it doesn't automatically roll over to the new one, you have to explicitly change it to get this offer.

      • -3

        Old Price was $180/12GB/365 Days

It still is, I just checked my account.

        These are different products.

        • Correct, the deal is that you need to upgrade to the new Offer to take advantage of the deal

        • +3

@jv: It is a significant discount compared to the old pricing and this deal will continue until they decide to withdraw the offer in lieu of another one which may or may not be as good.

        • +16

@jv: far out jv, stop arguing for the sake of arguing

@Matt P: Hands up if you logged in just to neg JV….

        • +1

          @sternocleido: i didn't, this time

        • Android app "Telstra 24x7" only let you buy very Costly "Browser Data Packs" that die after 30 days!

Telstra, add a bit of Consistency to your Game!

  • +1

Can it be used to make outgoing call?

    • +4

      Yes, with Skype…

      • +1

Dunno why you were negged. I used 4G data and skpe to make all my calls. True Ozbargain.

        have a +

        • +6

It doesn't matter what jv says, he will still get negged

      • -6

Looking to neg a new JV comment, can you post a new comment pls?

      • +1

And - depending on your device - maybe your VoIP provider's app will let you use dat to ring out.

Eg, MyNetFone's app for Android usually works.

    • +2

      This is a reasonable question.

Why? Because I use these data pack sims in my phone since I rarely make outgoing calls, but the option is there if I need too.

Also some samsung tablets with sim card capabilities can also make phone calls. Although I doubt anyone uses that.

Another thing would be if it's a data pack or not so that it will put data in a plus pack instead of having a dollar value in your account for credit me2u usage.

I think from other answers below it's can't make outgoing calls and is a data pack so presumably no credit me2u too.

It sounds like a good deal but I'll still have to research more to see if I should swap from my grandfathered data plans.

  • +1

Ah, this is Mobile Broadband. Damn.

  • +1

No improvement on a per GB basis, but fantastic for long expiry plans. Previously it was $200 for 12GB 1 year, now its $50 for 5GB 1 year. Perfect for my usage pattern

    • +1

..and no rollover on the older plans… not sure why Telstra a still keeping the older ones ???

      • +2

Telstra always "grandfather" their old plans and tend not to force you out. I think when I first started it was $150 for 12GB over 365 days, then if you joined later it became $180, but if I kept renewing mine, I get to stay on $150.

        • +4

Telstra always "grandfather" their old plans and tend not to force you out.

not only that, but when I try and recharge, I cannot see the new plans…

        • @jv: not only that, but when I try and recharge, I cannot see the new plans…

Same. I guess you'd just let it run down and ditch it for a new plan. I think when you think about it, Telstra is safeguarding those who wanted to stay with the plans they signed up to. It's just that in this case the new "offer" is a better "deal" than the one they "superseded" as far as the 2 Year Pass is concerned.

For a data SIM, you'd have no issues with keeping the same mobile service number anyway.

        • +3

@jv: Hey I contacted Telstra Livechat yesterday and they readily modified my MBB SIM to the new plans - the new data pass options then became visible …..

        • @cim85:

          cheers cim85…

    • +1

How is that not an improvement on a per GB basis?
      It was $15 a gig, now it's under $9.

      • Forgot how bad the post-July 2014 plans were.. best one is $100 for 10GB ($10 per GB)

Previous to that they had $100 for 12GB (30-days expiry)

    • I'm still bouncing around credit on my 2 sims credit me2u every 2 weeks to extend the expiry but might finally get off my grandfathered plans for these ones since it's a pain in the ass to do that :p

  • +1

1gb on 2 year expiry is pretty damn good for parents who infrequently use the Net

    • -5

      Which is …um no one.

    • +1

        I blame my phone.

    • agreed! Already told my parents.

JV, If you look at the Terms and Conditions:
        https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consume…

You will see that it is actually the same product, the only difference is that they added a table "For activations and transfers on and from 12 May 2015" with the new rates.

        • You will see that it is actually the same deal

I ran both docs through diff and it showed they were not the same…

      • +4

Have to agree with JV on this one, since this reads the same as the Telstra press release its just a new product and not a 'deal' or bargain. It's just an ad, even if it's better than one of their older products it's still just a standard product now at RRP.

      • +1

        Thanks jv
You make this site a whole lot more interesting and entertaining … and you do it for free … that's why this deal is a bargain

Just ignore him… Always trying so hard to be funny.

  • Can the credit be transferred out from the account to another prepaid mobile account like Simplicity?

    Any idea anyone?

    • No. You can't make calls with them either.

The main uses are International BrowsePlus Packs (roaming data), text messages, and content charges (i.e. Play Store).

      • Thanks mate. That's a pity. So much one can do with that credit!

  • +5

See Data Passes - the new way to buy data from 12/5/15 in OzBargain's Telstra Starter Pack Wiki.
Link there to discussion on Whirlpool.

Mainly focussing on these new data plans for those with $30 Starter Packs, but of relevance to all Data Passes.

Particularly of interest for those buying the $1 Telstra Starter Packs from Coles.

The $30 Starter Packs now again give 3GB for 30 days, PLUS $30 credit. Not bad for $1 with your shopping.

But credit can't be transferred out of any Data Passes just in. Credit can only be used up at $2/MB once data allowance is used up, Google Play purchases, or buy International roaming packs.

    From Whirlpool discussion…
Warning about transferring credit to new Data Pass - once transferred in, there's not much you can do with it. Keeping old plan means you can creditme2u to keep old data plan alive & topped up at old data rate!

    • I have NFI why you'd ever want to "top up" an existing SIM at the prices they charge.. Just spend $15 (currently $1 at Coles) for a new $30 starter SIM. Take the plunge and get a VoIP phone number. Pennytel has $5 plan includes a phone number, heaps of calls and cheap international rates.

      • +4

I think you misunderstand the difference between expensive Recharge & cheap Top ups that could cost as little as 3c!
        (it's the language Telstra uses)

Top ups transfer existing credit from another Telstra SIM, using CreditMe2u. $1 credit extends expiry up to 14 days. That can be handy if you need more time to use included data. Adding more credit adds more data.

Buying a $1 Starter Pack at Coles will result in up to $29 credit to top up another SIM (25c fees per transfer). That could extend the expiry by quite a while at $1 for 14 days. That $1 + 25c top up costs around $1/29 or about 3c!
(Activating that pack on Freedom plan will also give free calls, $220 of capped calls & SMS, and there's 1.3GB of data as well.)

It's a very handy feature. I have never Recharged in years on Telstra.

Using voip is an alternative to a phone, but with $1 Starter Packs, I get a year of phone access & 400 minutes of calls for $2.

International rates are as low as 15cCredit/min to expensive Japan (divide that by 30 to give actual cost = 0.5c/min)

That account is a handy spot for credit transfers from Freedom Plan etc. So I've been using both a long time, but haven't had a voip number in years (it was with Pennytel). I'm currently moving my calls over to WhatsApp for free calls on data to friends using the app.

It's in the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki.
Currently being updated, when I have the inclination.

        • Great economy 6 hours per year ; 30¢/hr. I considered blending something like these plans in DSDA handset, only bought the OnePlus One however. Dollar days may compare with Freedom

The thing I won't like is any operator restricting caller identification in SKYPE purchased last year $170 (rather, cards on special=$85). That would see this decade out, ideally, or unwed me til VoLTE/IP see out old, Timed.

Those who subscribed before 2015, got >50 countries mobiles landlines (incl AU mobile) up to 60 hours per year= AU 38; $19 after cards so about on par 30¢/hour, just variable QoS

The silver lining of QoS is consolidation/independence. Can use it any network any flatrate data/video, boasts wideband audio and has presence.

      • MyNetFone's Whirlpool account charges NIL per month, but maybe $10 / DID number needed.

        • $9/hour vs $3h-payg Skype v $1.6h-prem v $0.3/hr-prem 2014.

MNF were good quality have a good voicemail to gmail function but Skype can't CID stamp that no. (Nor even their own Skype nums ..in this country). Still piloting Skype, but probably will dipose local DID/$5Mnf in medium-term, tel-co has left it stagnant.

Can attest Skype forwarded Vodafone CID today, passes optus fortunately too.

        • I use Pennytel $0/mth 8c untimed calls to landline numbers. Often ring from overseas, or sometimes when shopping, on free WiFi for up to a few hours to landline for 8c. But I've always got to many calls to use up other ways.

      • +1

Pennytel is has left the market, try www.telecube.com.au

        • wow, $3/month for DID

        • @Phoebus:

i remember paying as low as $2 per year a few years back. That was before the unlimited mobile phone plans. Now hardly anyone uses landlines to make calls. Id imagine they are only used for ADSL and Fax services.

Offcourse im only talking re personal use

  • +1

So when does this deal expire and what are the normal Prices going to be after the expiry? Or is this just a product announcement?

    • +1

Considering these were discussed yesterday in the Coles $1 Telstra Starter Pack deal, I've already written about major aspects of them with links to other discussions in the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki…

It's a new product announcement of interest to many. Telstra has changed its prepaid & postpaid data offerings. Helpful to make choices.

Hiding it away in forums - it will be lost. I look after the Telstra Wiki & I was unaware of these changes until late yesterday. (Introduced on 12/5.)

      • +1

Hiding it away in forums - it will be lost

        That doesn't make it a bargain though…

The 'Deals' section shouldn't be used for public announcements…

This belongs in the forums or the wiki (thanks for posting the details there)…

If people here miss stuff because they don't use the forums, bad luck to them….

      • -1

Still doesn't make it a bargain, nor means it belongs on the front page, the forums here are not that popular but I'm sure most were viewing the whirlpool threads on it since before the 12th and just because some weren't doesn't mean it should be in the deals Section. Perhaps oz bargain needs a new product announcement section up there next to comps.

        • +2

One of the first additions to the Telstra Wiki update was links to whirlpool discussions in Data Passes - the new way to buy data from 12/5/15.

Normally I would agree this should be in forums, but it is a big change for a few OzBargainers to be aware of or change their purchases.

There are a few aspects that need careful consideration. Forums are better for information like this.

Of course, I could say it was a dupe, because most was in the Telsta Wiki first ;-)
But wikis aren't useful for debate. The Wiki is updated from the discussions.

  • +1

If Telstra is to expensive just join something like amaysim, that uses Optus, join a network that uses Telstra, they are usually cheaper.

    • +1

Telstra is not necessarily expensive for a 4G/4GX network.

$1 (with your shop at Coles) for 3GB plus $30 for Google Play purchases too expensive? Discard SIM & repeat ;-)

It's just their new offering to compete with Optus, according to the chatter.

    • just join something like amaysim, that uses Optus

Really crap reception in many areas I visit outside of Melbourne CBD though…

  • Could I port my number to one of these, and then receive calls? I would be happy to use VoIP for outgoing calls.

    • +2

yes, when you activate the sim, you have the option to port your number

    • +2

Yes. I receive calls & SMS on my 4G phone on a Telstra data SIM. I'm posting on it now.

      • +1

But the only catch is that you cant make calls, right?

        • +1

Voip, Skype, WhatsApp, etc on data. But no straight Telstra calls. It's a data only service, but the SIM has a phone number.

        • +1

@brucefromaustralia: sure, but not actual calls? What happens when you dial a number?

        • +2

          @hashtagbargain:
"Calls to this number are not available" - I just tried it.

        • @brucefromaustralia: can you call 000?

        • +3

          @ongrudy:

          can you call 000?

my phone can call 000 even without a SIM…

        • @jv: what phone is that?

        • @ongrudy:

          iphone

        • +1

          @ongrudy:
I think all modern smart phones are set up to do emergency dial - without a sim or entering pin etc.

        • Could you CID stamp the service num from using any of these platforms? I know it just forwards restricted to the receiver a Call out from Skype, for one.
The Huawei Y550 is enough to power it, although it takes 24h somehow to verifyactivate a Num in order to try CID OUT

Telstra is the only company that gives me good connection for online gaming, low spikes and lags, it's worth paying the extra.

  • +1

Just recently visited Bali for holiday, bought cheap sim cards A$3.5 for 11 GB (3g connection). Just wondering why we have to pay more expensive in Autralia ?

    • +2

Higher wages, higher costs, higher prices.

      • +1

$3.5 vs $100 :) sim card they might just bought it for 20-30 cents. the rest only the data :) I m not sure how adsl2+ provider able to sell unlimited broadband for $50/ month.

    • +1

Goodluck using up that 11 GB in Bali. The speeds are worse than dialup. Worst 3G of all the countries I've been to.

      • -1

it was with Indosat, pretty good connection around Sanur beach, constant speed I got around 5-10 Mbps.

        • Well… you know one provides 192hours /8 days/~70Mbps-20Mbps, today. Vha ain't far away.

    • +1

4 $1 Telstra Starter Packs from Coles cost $4 (assuming you do the shopping there) giving 12GB on 4G/4GX plus $120 to spend at Google Play ;-)
