I have one of these in my kitchen, it was gifted to us. Works great! Love that there are stations that just play music, no ads and no talk back.

    • +1

Genuine question, not flaming: is there any benefit of dedicated device over what I can do with mobile phone, tunein app, and bluetooth speakers? advice welcomed.

      • +4

I guess it would just be the simplicity of having a dedicated all in one device that is already set up. Then all you have to do is simply walk up to it and turn it on without the need for setting up speakers, navigating to a website or application and connecting to the speakers.

      • Agree with benllben. It's handy having everything in one unit. I've got a DAB with AM/FM as we still use AM a lot.

And I just had a look and it's on sale (again) today at DSE. I did mine click and collect at the time and I think it might have 50% off.

        • Aren't all the am/fm stations on digital radio?

        • @luke73:

          Not yet..

http://www.digitalradioplus.com.au will give you a listing of what is available in your area. Plus you can also listen to digital only stations from that site.

Most stations will stream through their website but not everyone broadcasts a digital signal.

      • +1

I guess just data usage, we are out in the country and have limited data, both at home and on our mobile phones. This just requires power.

        • You can pick up a little DAB+ USB stick for ~$10, and it'll do DTV (DVB) too. But that's a bit less convenient, and the antenna is often shit, and the last time I tried the drivers only worked on Windows 7 (not 8). On the plus side, you can record more easily.

        • @elusive:

Yep - I had one of those but as you said convenience is a bit on an issue. I think I paid closer to $100 at the time, it was early days.

          I ended up donating it.

AC/DC Operation (4 x AA Batteries). Good to hear what's going on when there's a power failure and your phone is running out of juice.

      • +1

yes, you need this if you want to listen to abc grandstand cricket commentary. it's no longer available for streaming through tunein etc due to the rapacious mofo's that control cricket broadcast rights

  • 2nds World have a Telefunken DAB+ for $25.00 but I don't think it has a headphone socket so you can't connect to an amplifier.

Got it for $29.60 with the ebay 20% off tech deal last week. Not a bad unit for that price.

    • That's a great price. Did you post that deal?
      I don't recall seeing it.

      • no i didn't as i only saw it an hour before the deal ended..

      • I saw that deal about 2 days before the deal ended, at that time already out of stock …

  • Is it only mono or stereo?

    • Not sure why you got negged, I thought it was a fair question however a simple Google search revealed that it has a stereo Headphone output. Obviously being a single-speaker unit it's only 'mono' via the speaker.

      • So why are people claiming that the sound is so good, if it's only mono? It would be better to use an stereo FM radio than invest in a new mono digital…

        • Actual 'Sound Quality' has little to do with if it's stereo or mono or even 'surround sound' for that matter. One very rough example is that most live music venues and large concerts only run a 'mono' FOH PA system unless the particular music style or artist requires a stereo mix. In other words you've most probably been exposed to pretty hardcore audio at some point in your life that was in fact only 'mono'. The venue itself creates a lot of the rest in the form of reflections from walls, floors, ceilings, other people etc. These radios only have a single 'mono' speaker however they can probably reproduce many more frequencies better than a lot of cheap 'boombox' type stereo systems and that's most probably why many are reporting good quality sound.

Not every mobile have fm option and also if u use apps to play radio than it uses Mobile Data.
This dedicated let u relax and let u play music with awesome sound at home or on the go too. @Pensionday

Apparently it does have option to select Mono/Stereo.

  • Can this be used for ABC when they broadcast cricket on their am frequency (612 ABC in brissy)?

I have a Tevion long wave radio in my office for such times but would like to upgrade it…

  • Paid this price over 12 months ago nothing that great for an average DAB radio that looks a little dull too.

  • +1

Wow the digital radio coverage map is really disappointing. Is this then basically useless for anyone not in a major city?

    • Unfortunately so. Pester your MP to get it rolled out in your area. You can still use it as a FM radio, but I assume you would have that already.

    • +1

Time for XM satellite radio. 100% coverage where it's available. C'mon Australia.

  • Officeworks also sell this. So should be able to price match JB or The Good Guys and get a further %5 off. If its more convenient to get to.

  • I was a big supporter of DAB until I found out about the horrendous bitrates they transmit at in Perth, being mostly 64kbps or less. Quality is significantly worse than FM transmission.

    • "until I found out about the horrendous nitrates they transmit" - Woah, how do you transfer molecules through the airwaves?? I thought that was only possible on Star Trek.

      • Haha…. yeah, that was my phone's autocorrect. I changed it since then, hoping nobody would notice. Congratulations, you got in before I fixed it :)

        • If you receive e-mail notifications of updates, then it's impossible not to notice :) You could even read it hours later.

    • We use one here in Sydney. Digital is a good replacement for old poor outdated AM (especially where I live) but for actually listening to music as you said FM sounds much better.

    • +3

Nah, tests show it's a little poorer than FM but almost as good. Most people can't tell the difference. I record the ABC jazz programs and have for years so I know. Now they've moved the jazz to AM, DAB+, or digital TV so FM is no longer an option for me.

Don't judge DAB+ by the tinny speakers on typical units. Put the signal through an amp and it will sound great.

      • You can't say that across the board. Check this website out: http://www.wohnort.org/dab/australia.html
I can very easily tell that the frequency range is very limited for 48kbit/s. No deep bass, and certainly no trebble. Personally I can tell that 128kbit/s "misses" something, so anything below that I can definitely hear it (on a decent sound system or with headphones).

        • +1

All I can say is that if anything ABC Jazz actually sounds a little better to me in DAB+ than it did in FM. No lack of bass either. Remember that those bitrates are compressed, using the same psychoacoustic compression techniques as MP3, which I know upsets some people. Those same people should also be in theory upset with streamed music. For ABC RN, it's mostly speech so who cares.

        • @greenpossum: The ABC and SBS have more bandwidth to play with than the commercial outlets - that have now also spun-out many channels. Some really lousy bitrates to be heard.

The OLED display on my radio is on the fritz, so I can't see current state-of-play, but even with the ABC channel-group, I certainly noticed a distinct drop in fidelity across all channels (noticeably below FM w/full-quieting), as more were added and bandwidth (not always judiciously) apportioned.

          @°0°@D

(Attempt at a sad koala DJ. Sorry.)

        • @greenpossum: I should add that I was an early adopter of digital radio.
The 'Pure' radio I have must be almost five years old. Apart from its now dodgy display, it also has an output to feed an amp. Radio's (actually pretty good) speaker could be bypassed.

The first stations up here in Brisbane to stream sounded amazing, courtesy of the bandwidth and bitrates the stations could play with.
Triple J sounded amazing. One of the commercial's applied an even higher bitrate to their one (at the time) station. I only listened to Hamish and Andy on said station, but the few interspersed songs in their show sounded sparkling.
Subjectively, every little bit as good as best-case FM reception.

Noticeably different now, to my ears, anyway.
          I really can't vouch for a koala DJ's.

          :)

  • Those u have doubt in sound quality.

I have that and digital radio channels got
Awesome quality and so clear sound quality.

I am listening songs on it and it does resembles stereo quality music.

    • Clear, yes. Because there is no static. But the detail and depth is lacking (depending on which station you listen to, as some broadcast at higher quality)

  • :(

  • Can anyone who owns this tell me whether or not it has a telescopic (or any other type) of antenna?

    • Couldn't find a pic of it however the manual (http://www.bushaustralia.com.au/wp-file-browser-top/bushmanu…) does suggest "For a better reception, extend the antenna…"

      • Yep I had already looked at their terribly scanned manual, but wasn't 100% convinced that it wasn't generic info that they had copied from another manual. Something seems quite unpolished about this company to me.

        • +2

BUSH are just like many other brands these days ie. they test a generic device being pumped out of a factory in China at a cost they're happy with and once it passes they get a few million produced with their brand name printed on them. Nothing wrong with that at all but it does mean things like User Manuals and packaging can suffer. Costs too much to reprint something that already exists I suppose… even at a tenth of a cent per unit!

        • @SteveAndBelle: Precisely.
All of the 'Bush' branded gear is badge engineered. Same models can be found in different markets under different names - including by way of just store-branding and also low-cost in-house brands i.e. equivalents of Dick Smith's 'Digitor'. It's certainly the case in the U.K., with multiple - identical models - of various generic stuff, being flogged. Sometimes in markets, with different brands, on same models, side-by-side!

        • @Tas: … not that there's anything wrong with this of course! Been happening for years in the car industry and will happen more & more over time. As long as it benefits the consumer then all good :)

        • +1

@SteveAndBelle: Yeah, but I think in this instance (at this pricepoint) we are talking about some marginal quality gear, with a (pretty likely) brief lifespan.

    • +2

yes, telescopic one at the back

Got one of these from Officeworks today, They were about $50 but price beated TGG/JB Hifi.
