Is this suitable for using as a Foxtel Go / Netflix box connected to the TV?

    • +1

I know that other people have said Foxtel Go runs well on other devices with the same processor and RAM, so Netflix should go well too.

    • I too would like to know how Foxtel go would run on this connected to a TV rather then a monitor. If it does run how would it look?

      Has HDMI out correct?

      • Like a computer, you can change the resolution to fit the TV. Yes, the included HDMI cable is Micro HDMI to HDMI, so you can connect it to your TV.

        • But will Foxtel Go work and if so how will it look that is the question

If the graphics card is not really good then the image will be not very watchable

        • @Twisty: Might be worth asking Millikano as he said on a previous deal that it runs well. The VOYO has the same CPU and GPU as this one.

        • @Twisty: I'd like to know too.

        • +5

          @corksta:

I've had a good chance to try Foxtel Go on the Voyo PC with similar specs. What I've found is that it isn't as good as it was on my Mac, and in live-view mode the quality jumps between the lowest res and the highest while it tries to keep up (though this could be a combination of factors including the actual program running silverlight not being very efficient). When watching the 'catch up' shows, however, it seems to do a bit better, holding quality a lot more. It still skips a bit every half hour when the TV schedule is updated (known problem with Foxtel Go on PC), but it's pretty acceptable for what you pay.

It runs Netflix reasonable well too, and 720-1080 youtube and iTunes content runs fine, though they all take a bit longer to load than on a faster computer.

Honestly, for a working computer for around $120, it really is cheap and can at least run Foxtel Go, unlike the Apple TV for around the same cost.

Hope that helps, and good luck making a decision.

          Cheers.

*Edit- On a side note, the adapter was supposed to be an AU plug with mine but was sent with EU plug which was a shame. Runs fine on an Apple 12W charger though.

        • +2

@Millikano: sounds more like internet problems

        • @astarman:

Could be, but as I mentioned, everything works fine on my mac, ps4, apple TV etc at high resolution settings for streaming.

  • Yer foxtel go runs at highest res on my imac, just want something to run foxtel go on the highest res but in bedroom, might have to buy a Mac mini but that's more $$ but might be the only option to get highest res without skips etc

  • +2

Twisty, about anything can run foxtel go nowadays, you do not need a Mac mini for that. This can easily be used as a machine for kids or TV and even a torrent downloader

  • Sounds good for openelec kodi/xbmc

    • Why install openelec when Windows on these devices is blazing fast with XBMC/Kodi?

      • Ease of use, quick boot up and no need for windows updates/antivirus etc and no windows license cost

  • Looks like a good kids/internet/word processing PC….. any idea on how it runs adobe flash based games from the web (like Club Penguin, Moshi Monsters etc).

  • will heat be a problem? i'll be impressed if it lasts for 2 years.

    • It's throttled down to 1.3 Ghz with bursts up to 1.8, and a reported power drain of 2.2W. When I were a lad, that was the rating on a 3.2 Volt torch bulb :-) I think the days when a computer mag had a face off between an AMD Athlon and an Intel Pentium - which was the quickest at frying an egg - are thankfully behind us.

    • Heat in low end pcs isn't a problem anymore. My new entry entry level laptop doesn't even have a fan and doesn't generate enough heat to notice it sitting on your lap.

I think all the advancements in mobile phone CPUs to create low energy/heat computers has benefited these PCs

I ordered from these guys two weeks ago and paid for express, 3-5 day shipping. My order hasn't been sent.

They up'ed the shipping price on me twice, the second time (third price) for a courier I wasn't using (so I refused). Their excuse sounded reasonable, but their stuff up would have cost me $25 to ship a $25 pair of headphones, which I wouldn't have bought if their shipping calculator worked right.

They hinted at third shipping increase (fourth price) so I paypal disputed. They finally agreed to ship on Wednesday for the second price but my order still hasn't left their warehouse.

I offered to order more stuff and pay the extra shipping, reorder with their preferred courier, even change my shipping location because they said the extra shipping fees are location based.

Their only reply was basically 'pay us more money'.

If you order with these guys, I strongly suggest airmail it and prepare to wait.

Tl;dr: 3-5 day shipping still not shipped after 14 business days.

    • +1

Since I'm not a store rep, I can't say for certain why there were these issues, but I do know why there may have been a shipping delay. After the Chinese New Year there was a large backlog of orders that needed to be fulfilled, because of this there have been delays in processing and shipping. Typically it takes 2-3 days to process and then how ever many days it says for the shipping method.

If anyone else has any issues, please send me your order number and I can contact the store reps directly and help get your issue resolved.

      • Nothing to do with New Year, they have replied to most of my messages with-in 12 hours. And have been demanding more money for a fortnight too.

Just to make my position clear:

I bought items with 3-5 shipping via TNT. They said they need to ship one item via DHL. I said ok. They then said I owe them $40 (AUD) (I'm leaving out a lot here).

The thing is, when I add that one item to my cart, go to check out, get to the payment page, it will still let me select TNT for half the price of DHL.

I've never bad mouthed them or used extremes, I just suggested people use airmail.

Sorry for any errors. I have far more important stuff I should be focusing on then their shipping calculator playing up.

        • Sounds like the $40 AU is a surcharge for being in a DHL remote area, but I could be mistaken.

        • @Clear:

Their last message said they can ship everything via TNT. The message before that implied they wanted to charge me a DHL remote area fee for both TNT and DHL. Anyway, rant:

DHL was $2 for my full order. I paid. They cancelled my payment and up'ed DHL to ~$46 for my full order. TNT was ~$32 so I changed to and paid for TNT.

After they stuffed me around (there is more) they wanted me to pay for both TNT and DHL, making it ~$72. So DHL went from $2 to $46 to $72 requiring TNT.

How is this in anyway reasonable?

If I reorder I can ship it to Sydney CBD for less than $10 for 3-5 day DHL.

Still, I tried to be nice and offered to buy more accessories to make shipping more palatable. Twice.

You can't charge someone for 3-5 day shipping but screw up the price then refuse to either ship as paid or give a refund.

12 full business days have passed without shipping. They can't expect me to pay any form of express shipping anymore. I don't expect them to ship products at a loss either, so it is well past time for them to provide a refund.

  • A search brought up a code on a site called " Freaktab " - ZGHHOVZD - which carried an offer of this box at $89.99! Geekbuying needed a log-in to apply that code so I am not in a position to check it out, either the offer to Aussie users being $20 U.S. higher with an added expense for a conversion rate looks like the usual "aussie tax" is becoming an international standard, or there is a better offers available if you become a member.

[In case people are wondering, the price was showing as $109 U.S. when I posted this - I presume the O.P. hasn't had time to annotate the edit yet:-P]

    • I is very confused by this. The OP has indicated "It's only $89.95 USD with the coupon" being UYWUOYON however you have found another code which also discounts it to this same price.

Both codes tested and confirmed working. Unfortunately they don't stack.

      • The price and the code were different when I posted. The price was changed a few minutes after I posted, with no acknowledgement or reason given so I modifed my post to reflect this. That the OP made this change without acknowledgement of the reason is one factor in my consideration of this deal, good as it is…

        • Wouldn't there be revision history on this post if that was the case?

        • @cynic:

Unsure - I do know that the reason I noted the $89 price is because I did a Startpage search on Geekbuying following This Guy's post [ result - delivery times can be elastic, one person out of [X] didn't get a package, conclusion, if you want Selfridges, go to London], and the unit itself, and noted a listing for $89 U.S - which was lower then the $109 U.S it was originally posted for. When I went there, it was a U.S buying site and the post had today's date. I posted what I found, and when I checked a few minutes later to see if it was, as I thought, a "members only" offer, the price here was now $89.

Whether or not there should be a revision is a question that occurred to me as well - I looked for such, or a comment from the OP announcing that he had negotiated a better deal, and saw nothing, so I altered my post so people wouldn't be confused.

Oh - and mods - shouldn't there be a special star for trying to stack the codes… :-)

        • +1

@terrys: Sorry for the late reply. I'm not a store rep, so I come here when I have time.

I don't think I fully understand what you're trying to say. The coupon I provided lowers the price from 109.99 to 89.99 and the coupon on Freaktab does exactly the same. I have not edited this post and neither have the mods.

        • +2

@Clear: Weird - I believe you, but it was showing as $109 on my system when I first saw the post, which is why I queried it - it was showing $129 when I went to the site so the code was fine, just the final price differed.

I'm suspecting my system may have been having cache problems maybe, and I pulled an earlier version of the Geekbuy site? It's all I can think of.

FWIW, I +'d the deal and liked it. Ty for the response.

        • @terrys: Ah, now I understand what you mean. I can only guess why it could have been raised to $129. Cache is very possible though.

    • +1

Terrys, from all of my research they seem legit. Their prices change frequently because they try to have the best price.

I've spent way too much time on their website stuffing around trying to recreate my problem. I never experienced this. Like you said, you might have been visiting a cached page from before a price change (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/186319#comment-2622597).

I've only incurred 'inconsistencies' with their shipping calculator.

Their handling of my issue could be any combination of cultural differences, language barriers, mistrust, thin margins and drop shipping.

From my experience I highly recommend using airmail.

I am only one guy. The closest to a real complaint I have read about geekthinking is that it took 32 days to receive a package. But advertised dispatch is 2-7 business days and airmail is 15-30.

      • +1

Yep -that was what I thought - hence the "selfridges" comment. It's sometimes hard for people to grasp that 100 complaints can equal a 0.001% dissatisfaction rating, and most people don't say a thing unless something goes wrong. I was reminded of that when my link hiccuped twice today, and i had to remind myself at least I didn't have to whistle down the phone to connect…

My only holdout on this deal is " Do I want to wait for USB 3" lol.

  • Dere D35.

Is this just a clumsy rip off of the John Deer D35?

  • +1

the only thing missing from this device is a network port.

personally I would skip these TV boxes and opt for a windows8.1 tablet with HDMI out. plenty available at a slightly higher price point, with the added portability makes better value. I believe one was posted earlier this week. just make sure the device has 2gb ram and 32 sd/ssd with sd slot.

    • I'm in two minds on that - if the use is for a TV box, then the extra for the tablet monitor is pointless, and ~ $30 [US extra to up the storage from 16 to 32 gig isn't quite as vital as on Android, as an SD card can be used as disk expansion under Win8.1, as the double-edged feature of android's "permissions" safety don't apply in Wintel world.

I was thinking of a portable unit a lot more transportable on a bike than a tablet, but I'd have to throw a HDMI to VGA converter in the box to use my workplace monitors :-/. At least I can see plug it in easily as we do have the electric lights now. USB wi-fi dongles are getting into the "free with three boxes of Chocky Colon-Clean brekky cereal", but I imagine the reaction any work-place I.T. asked about authorising one of these would make the BOFH look like Santa Claus…

      • +1

I am comparing the unit to - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/185660 - its only a few $$$ more. It all comes down to your requirements. You may also want to take a look at the PipoX7. Do your homework before purchasing. Good Luck :)

    • Pipo X7 has a a network port

  • I was looking at an Intel NUC/Gigabyte Brix predominantly to replace an aging ATX desktop computer we currently use to stream 720p MKV files from our N36L NAS.

Does anyone have any comments about how this compares to a base model NUC? The absence of infra-red receiver and limited memory are nearly offset by the price saving.

    • Video streaming looks fine. The review below states the CPU lacks H.265 and 4K video support. 3D playback at 1080 may or may not work (only simulated):
      http://www.cnx-software.com/2015/01/31/kodi-14-video-playbac…

Easiest way to think about it is the NUC is a desktop tower crammed into a tiny box. This computer is a tablet without the screen or battery. And modern tablets normally play back most videos fine.

      • +1

I thought I saw 4K - it's listed for the Pipo which is a similar specced unit with more ROM and a blinged up box - but it would be @ 24Hz. I think we have to wait a little while for $90 display port/dual HDMI equipped boxes :-)

        • The review linked stated that the same CPU in a different box played some 4k videos fine, some ran at ~10fps and some failed.

The review stated 4k isn't officially supported on this CPU and I'm a little too worked up about my unshipped order now to be helpful and find out more.

Without further research I suggest a NUC or a two year old laptop if 4k is a priority. For 720p this computer looks great.

  • Currently $121.89 AUD (using supplied coupon code) Shipped to Australia via Registered Airmail with a 15-30 Business Days delivery time frame.

  • Can anyone suggest a similar unit but has at least one USB 3 port? Can be android or Windows

  • Ordered one of these, pity about the exchange rate being rubbish - lets see how long it takes to get here :).

  • this is kinda kool

  • Has anyone actually received theirs yet? Still waiting on mine.

Edit - just checked the tracking number, looks like it might have only been sent on the 24th! 72 hours my arse. Looks like Geek Buying are another dodgy one.

    • mine just arrived today

    • Sorry about the shipping in 72 hours. Turns out they actually meant 72 hours after processing. I won't add it in further deals.
