  • When it would start in Au time?
Previously these phone are just toys for people because they can't be unlocked. Is the change to do with the new legislation?

    • -4

      Deal is on now

      • +1

        No its not.

    • its on at around 1PM tomorrow.
PST is 19 hours behind Sydney

  • According to the AT&T link, the phone needs to be in service for atleast 6 months, wonder if they enforce that rule?

  • woohoo, gunna buy mum a new phone.

  • Sipping $10.15 to Vic. Toatal price $76.00

    • price not active yet. Starts at 6pm PST in USA

      • +1

Do you mean 6pm AEDT (Sydney time)? So 1.5 hours from now?

Because the slickdeals post says 3am eastern time in US and it's 1:30am there now I think.

        • I think the time on Amazon for me is reflecting my local time. So i guess thats correct

        • +2

          @easternculture:

Cool thanks, yep that must be right as mine says 'Starts at 5:30 PM' and I'm 30 mins behind you in Adelaide.

  • Its a Amazon Lightening deal so will sell quickly

Is it worthwhile adding to cart now before the sale?

    • +1

microsoft is trying to clear stock for The new Nokia 640 to be released next month. SO they may have 1000's of stock to clear

  • +6

There are two models of the Lumia 635 according to http://www.gsmarena.com
    Nokia Lumia 635 RM-974 - international model
Nokia Lumia 635 RM-975 - USA, North America

This one selling is supposed to be the US model thus its 3G and 4G band will not be very compatible to our frequency:

    3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 2100 - RM-974
    HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 - RM-975
    4G bands LTE 800 / 1800 / 2600 (Bands 3, 7, 20) - RM-974
    LTE 700 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600 (Bands 2, 4, 5, 7, 17) - RM-975

So the price is very attractive but it can not be used as a primary 4G device in Australia even if it is unlocked.

    • +1

Damn gotta have that sweet 1800

Pack it up boys we're done here

EDIT: I just entered [star]3001#12345#[star] into my iPhone and apparently I'm connected to Telstra 4G on channel 28 - 700 Mhz

      So maybe it's okay?

      • Each user's mileage would vary I think, Vodafone only have 1800 4G at the moment

        • Vodafone also has 850 4G now.

      • That is why the device is only partially compatible to our LTE.

Note that the 3G bands is also not very compatible to ours. You might occasionally only have your phone on 2G/GSM network…

        • +2

Yeah you do really need 1800. Anything outside of that is as clear as mud as to which bands are in use.

        • +2

          @easternculture:
Are you sure it will work? Telstra 4GX and Optus 4G at 700mhz is band 28, there is also another 700mhz band 17 which is not compatible as far as I know.

          LTE 700 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600
          (Bands 2, 4, 5, 7, 17) - RM-975

        • @kaBargain:

Not sure how bands work. Ill still be happy using 3G on this if non of the above work

        • +3

@easternculture: yet posted a reply saying the opposite on my comment…

      • Telstra launched their 4GX on 700MHz and 2600MHz start of this year (in addition to original 4G bandwidth at 1800Mhz).

Apparently optus also now supports the above bandwidths.

As for Vodafone, no luck, only 1800Mhz.

        Ymmv indeed.

      • +2

        "700mHz Channel 28"
Don't think this will work with aus 700mHz as doesn't seem to support 28

        • -3

maybe .. happy to take a chance at $50

      • USA 700mhz is different to the one in australia. Their one is band 2 and ours is band 28

    • +1

Good if you want to use it for a US trip, but not very good for 4G in Aus as its missing the 1800 that the 3 majors have for 4G.

  • poster on slick deals says it starts at 3am EST. it is currently 1:30am EST, so it should be active in 1.5 hours from now :)

  • don't rush, they won't unlock this.

      • +5

I had bought 2 of this during BD sale, had to ask my friend in US to get the unlock codes with his On-Plan (Postpay) Account. He could get only 1 code, have to wait 60 days to get another code.
Mark my Words you wont get unlocks done with creating a prepaid account out of the sim that you get, I had already tried that way with the 520 (in 2013) and 635 (in 2014)

        • It does work. I managed to unlock the AT&T Nokia 520 for free. Use the option: "non AT&T Mobility Customer" does work.

  • Windows 10 Preview available for this model

    • Is windows 10 "preview" different to windows 10?

      • -1

They can't make it a proper windows 10, so they have to call it 'beta' .. 'preview'.. due to licencing and/or putting some manufacturers nose out of joint..

      • bound to be full of bugs….probably even after release!

  • Is this better than previous cheap nokia deals on Woolworths etc ($39/49 can't remember)

    • +1

Previous deals were for Nokia 530s. No 4G/LTE, smaller TFT screen, and locked to Telstra.

  • +7

This will NOT have LTE in Australia. It does not support the mainstream 4G networks in Australia which are 1800mhz.

In addition it does NOT support 700mhz 4G in Australia. While this phone has 4G support for 700mhz this is a different band of 700mhz to Telatras 4GX and Optus's 4G+ bands.

EDIT: I just entered [star]3001#12345#[star] into my iPhone and apparently I'm connected to Telstra 4G on channel 28 - 700 Mhz

      • +11

Yes band 28!!! According to the link above that post it says this phone supports 2,4,5,7,17.

        How can people not read???

        • +1

The biggest issue is actually unlocking the phone (give the provided link a try, read the conditions). AT&T won't unlock it unless you are a real/legit prepaid customer for 6 months or more.

So, the reality is you cannot even use it as a phone, not even 2G.

Anyway, for $38 USD, if it could be unlocked for free (which is not the case), then with just 3G, it would be more than fine. However, it is basically a Windows Phone 8 version of an iPod Touch, except it has GPS.

        • @netsurfer: Sorry, I was wrong. It does work. I managed to unlock the AT&T Nokia 520 for free. Use the option: "non AT&T Mobility Customer" does work.

  • Does this mean the 630 will drop in price soon?

    • Its been pretty cheap before. I picked one up for $80 from DSE, I am currently waiting six months to get Voda to unlock it more cheaply.

      • @paizuri, how much are they charging to unlock it?

        • 75 for first six months 25 thereafter.

        • @paizuri:looks like Vodafone & Telstra have the same model for unlocking their prepaid.

  • free delivery for me.. with my free delivery portal

    • what portal is that :)

      • +1

It's just an open order with free delivery.. i can keep adding items to it

if it's a lightning deal I can only get one..

  • +2

    LTE 700 won't work here, AT&T uses band 17.
Other than Australia, the only other place I know using the same rare 700 band 28 for LTE is Taiwan.

  • Is this likely to work ok on optus 3g network? I couldn't care less about 4g, but as long as it oks on 3g

    • +4

It's supports 2100mhz 3G which is the older Optus network used in cities. It will not support 900mhz 3G which Optus uses in regional areas and for its newer network in the city

      • ah ok, thx for that. just looked at my nearest tower, only 900mhz here. bugger

  • what about paying using following offer

Get a $10 Promotional Credit with the Purchase of $50 in Amazon Gift Cards

    http://www.amazon.com/b?node=11076307011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0D…

    • only for prime members?

  • active, just got one. $55.50 AUD delivered to Adelaide :) will be good for telstra 3g for now

    • wow. Amazon exchange rate is really bad.

The total was only 37.52 (to melbourne), so it should be just under 50 bucks with the citi debit.

  • So guys will this phone work in regional areas at all?

    • It will with telstra afaik, telstra uses 850mhz pretty much everywhere

      • Thanks for your reply pacify - My dad is with Optus wondering if it will work in Newcastle? - Looking to grab him one

        • looking at a few of the towers in newcastle, the ones i looked at all have 2100. It should work in newcastle, but it might not if go out into the country side..

edit/ actually all the towers in the general region seem to have 2100

  • +1

$50.55 to Sydney - always worthwhile having a spare phone as 'someone' keeps dropping her other one :-)

  • +1

If people are buying this. Please assume that it can't be unlocked. This way you won't be disappointed in case it turns out the ATT free unlock doesn't work.

Personally, I bought one. If it doesn't unlock and can't be used as a phone here, I will use it as a mp3/media player. Or give it to my relatives in the states, since they use ATT over there.

  • note you can buy 2 at a time which will help save postage compared to making 2 seperate orders.

    • Yes it cost 10us$ for 2x phones. 92 AU$ total with 28 deg card.

    • Free shipping only applies to US address.

  • PURCHASED!

  • Bought as back up phone.
Am traveling to the U.S. soon (thanks to a TA deal), so may be handy there.
If AT&T don't unlock, assume we could go with a 3rd party like DC Unlocker?

    • Most of the cheap unlock services may not be able to unlock AT&T Prepaid ones with IMEI starting with certain digits.
The ones who can will charge a lot (more than the cost of the phone).

      • Correction: The unlock URL does work. I managed to unlock the AT&T Nokia 520 for free. Use the option: "non AT&T Mobility Customer" as people indicated does work.

  • edited….

    • Those are probably the CDMA version, best to avoid.

  • Love a bargain but not going to go on this just in case it becomes an expensive paper weight and the screens a bit small for a windows phone and me

  • +1

The way I read it this is a Go Phone and it says "The device must be active for at least six months of paid service" before it can be unlocked.

Just like the Nokia in this past deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/144300 and this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/127724. Who ever managed to get a free unlock?

  • +7

I had bought 2 of this during Amazon BF sale, had to ask my friend in US to get the unlock codes with his On-Plan (Postpay) Account. He could get only 1 code, have to wait 60 days to get another code.
Mark my Words you wont get unlocks done with creating a prepaid account out of the sim that you get, I had already tried that way with the 520 (in 2013) and 635 (in 2014)

    • Thanks for sharing

    • +1

Thanks, helped me decide not to bother.

  • The link gives me a virgin and boost mobile option as well
What is that about? Any differences? esp in terms of unlocking?

    • Both are CDMA, so of no use.

      • Thank you. Also just noticed that they don't ship here

  • Don't need one, so going to resist temptation and save trees a fifty.

  • Does it come with a att sim?

    • Yes it does with an AT&T Go Prepaid Sim. No Starter Credit in it though

  • -2

512mb ram? Would I be better off with a Chinese phone with 1gb ram & Android for just a few more dollars?

    • +1

For everyday use I would say 512mb windows > 1gb Android. Windows os far less ram hungry

  • There's also virgin and boost mobile for the same price. Ay differences with these?

    • Those networks use cdma (ie don't have a sim) will not work in Australia at all

    • Virgin and boost mobile will not ship here in Au.

  • Cheapest ever according to camelcamelcamel

    http://camelcamelcamel.com/AT-Nokia-Lumia-635-Contract/produ…

  • +1

All, please go to that link for the unlock code and click it through…You will get stonewalled when u need to put in your AT&T wireless number.

    Save your $50…

Edit: select "non AT&T Mobility Customer". You "may" get lucky…

  • Great, got it for my planned two trips to the USA next year. Will be good to download maps and load music before I leave and know I can just take it with me and not have to go to a phone store when I get there.

A$49 looks competitive for a mid range prepaid smart phone in the US.

Shame I can't just take my current phone and buy a sim, but looks like the USA has their own bands for phones.

  • This is similar to the 830, but ~ $370 cheaper.

Guys I can confirm that unlocking via https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and option "non AT&T Mobility Customer" does work. I got unlock code for my at&t locked Lumia 520 (bought previously) within few hours. Thanks easternculture :)
