  • This seems too cheap, 280$ return to penang from goldcoast for 2 people with 1x baggage on the way home. WTF.

I just called the Air Asia call centre. They've confirmed that you CAN in fact (for example) book Sydney to Ho Chi Minh Return and just get off at Kuala Lumpur. You obviously will not be refunded for the entire Vietnam leg of the flights. However, they've pointed out that you'll need to be at the airport 3 hours BEFORE your flight back to Sydney and that you'll need to inform the ground staff that you've skipped the flight from Vietnam to KL. It should be fine. I'm also going to do this.

It may be a bit tricky if you have checked in luggage (you may need to confirm this with them), but for carry-on luggage, it's fine.

    • the theory is quite make sense for the return leg viet to aus. since you're not checking in at Saigon it'll be empty seat 'reserved' for you (if they don't sell that seat yet). but better to confirm again with airasia

      • Yep, I did confirm. They said it would be okay to do it that way too.

    • +5

I think it's a big risk for the returned flight. Going there and getting off at KL I think there should be no issues. But for the return flight, your ticket may be cancelled as you have missed the first leg of your return booking (Viet to KL). Full service Airlines usually will cancel all further flights if you miss one leg of your booking. For AA I've read they treat going to a destination and return as seperate, but if it's a fly through then it could be an issue. Even though you miss the KL to Viet, your return ticket should still be valid. But if you miss the first leg of Viet to Syd, there could be issues. Unless it is stated on writing, I wouldn't take Air Asia call centre word for it.

Hmmm… you make a good point. I was in a similar situation once. I think I'll give them another call to test their consistency. Thanks for bringing it to my attention in a different way!

        • let us know the outcome?

      • I did this once with Singapore Airlines and they charged me $100 to amend my itinerary, or else they would cancel my subsequent flights. Pricks.

  • +2

Amazing deal - I think the cheapest ever to these destinations?

  • +1

How prone are they to cancel flights?

    • +2

I've flown with them countless times and have never seen a cancelled flight. Delays, likely, but cancellations, not so much.

      • +1

My first flight with them was this January, they cancelled both our outbound and return flights and put us on alternate flights. Adding an extra 4 days to our trip. YMMV

        • There was no flights closer to your original flight times? Did you have to pay fare difference?

        • @sagrules: Those were the closest flights. Didn't have to pay extra, if I did then I would've just canceled it

    Crazy Prices!

  • Mostly just Mon/Tues pairs for SYD-SGN left. Also cutting it close on the KUL-SGN flight with only 2hrs transit time at KUL.

  • Tried to confirm a booking $120 return from Perth to Ho Chi Minh in Sep and website crashed ):

  • Website crashing - looks like it is being ozbargained…

  • Yep crashing

  • Anyone find any dates for SYD - HCM?
Can only find return dates @ $57.00, nothing for depart.

  • Warning: Travel dates are smack bang in the middle of monsoon season for beach destinations. I'll pass :/

    • +1

Wet season in Phuket is still better than any time in Singapore :)

      • But can you get Singapore Noodles in Phuket ?

The last time I went to Phuket in late Oct/Early November it was sunny every day, we had maybe.. 30 seconds of rain the whole time?

Koh Samui on the other hand.. is meant to be pretty terrible at that time.

    • Depends where you are going. Destinations are in different countries. Even in Malaysia, East & West coasts have different wet seasons.

  • +2

far out that's annoying. No reservation while you're filling out the forms. Twice now I was clicking to do the final page and seats are gone. Pretty good way to piss customers off.

    • Seems like all dates are sold?

      • out of GC yeah seems so.

  • I can't find any dates for GC -> Anywhere. Has anyone got any?

    • Sold out 45 mins ago mate

      • more like 15 ago. I was about to confirm one and it only would have taken me 2 mins to fill out the forms.

  • which one of these 3 do you recommend and why?
    Penang
    Langkawi
    Phuket

    • +2

mate, dont wait for replies, the fares will be gone… just book!
first time traveller, just go to Phuket like the masses, cant go wrong, there are options to get in the thick of it or go to quieter locations like khao lak.

    • Penang — eat all you can!

  • Site up and booked 2 flights!!

Can't believe this is during school hols as well

  • I can't find cheap flights to Phuket from Syd…when I say cheap I mean under $300 one way

    • Same here. Maybe all sold out?

      • try 6 oct to 13 oct. $132!!!

        • Yeah eventually found it. The cheap fares don't show up if you click into the "View by month" thing up the top right.

  • +1

Can't find any cheap ones departing from Melbourne :(

  • Got MEL-SGN(Ho Chi Minh) for $122 return… insane prices.. I probably won't take the return flight but it was only $40 in case…

    • dates?

      • +1

        7th-16th of November

      • Seems to be dates to all 4 locations early/mid Nov…

        • Did u book just now?

        • @mlburnian:
          2 Minutes before posting…

Those dates to Langkawi are still ~$110 from Meblourne. The outbound to SGN in still $78 but the return is booked…

        • @mlburnian:

These fares don't show on the Monthly Calendar. You have to look week by week and the return flights are only discount(at tax + fees) if purchased as part of a return.

  • Can't see anything for the Gold Coast.

  • Thanks, got family of 3, Melb to Phuket return for $500 in mid Oct with some baggage and meals. Awesome deal.

    • It cost my partner and myself $550 return for the same thing :/ weird.. we booked 20kg baggage each and selected our seats, for some reason it cost us $20 each to book our seats from Melb - KL and back but only $4 each from KL - Phuket..

Or did you choose to not select seats so you didn't have to pay the fee? We didnt choose any meals either.. eeh. $270 each is still damn good

      • didn't do seats, $20 each, each way - no way (didn't even look at the short flight!) some food each, 1 bag there, 2 back.

        • Ah okay. If you don't select seats does it just mean you aren't guaranteed to be seated together? I don't really know how it works if you don't choose.. like if they still try and seat you in the same area or not

        • @Lunawinter: Yeah no seat. No guarantees. I assume they won't let a child fly in a seat by herself, so that at least guarantees two of us sitting together, web check in early enough, should be able to get three in a row for free.

  • Thanks OP, Phuket or KL here we come, also thinking of skipping the Phuket leg, however I know how airlines can be, some clause as mentioned earlier and your return flight is stuffed

  • +2

    I guess I'm going to Phuket then…

  • sold out by the time i was booking ,had site error few time ..eeeerrr , guess i am not going anywhere

  • Can't see any perth ones left :(

  • Hopefully you get to actually fly to where your going. They have a history of cancelling their flights then delaying refunding the customers.

  • Managed to get MEL <> SGN Oct 5 - Oct 31 for 4 people at $122 each!

  • JV, you have done it again!

  • +1

Just checked SYD-PEN and SYD-HKT, both sold out

  • I've never seen this price before, but SYD-PEN should be gone, sigh

  • I got 2 to Phuket for $286. Got scared at PayPal and cancelled. Went back to AirAsia site and the booking went through and give me a booking number but says NEEDS PAYMENT. Wonder how long before I need to pay.

EDIT: Actually it says - " Please pay now. This reservation will remain on hold until Thursday, 12 March 2015 at 21:50 (9:50 PM) "

  • Ohh too bad.Just get back from Phuket last week.

    • Phuket mai? Dee mak krap.

  • Only very short trips left in November for SYD-PHUKET. Otherwise, it's gone…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DT7bX-B1Mg

Tony Fernandez was on TV tonight complaining about the Taxes and charges for Sydney airport. He quoted $67 per person. With these fares they wont have much left after paying those. However I hope that he keeps complaining, and loudly. Sydney airport is an absolute rip off.

    • Assuming we're only covering taxes and charges at these prices, I'm actually more surprised that Melbourne was only $9 less. If the difference really is only $9 they seem to get a lot more love from airlines than you'd expect.

      • These are zero fares plus taxes - tells us in fare breakdown

        Fare. 0.00 AUD
        Airport Tax 310.00 AUD
        Arrival Tax 124.00 AUD
        Total 434.00 AUD

        That's for 4 passengers return

    • Not to mention the curfew of Sydney airport too. I think thats why Melbourne is becoming an attractive alternative for carriers to Australia due to no curfew and no congestion.

  • $415 return MEL - SIN not a bad price for Mid October if choose the right dates. Only downside is a KL transfer. Funny thing is MEL - KL is actually more expensive… approx $525 return.

    Still great prices.

  • +2

Looks to be all gone for Sydney people, all destinations, both ways.

  • Deals keep re-appearing, just got myself Vietnam return for $106.50 from the gold coast.

Looks like it must be from people who had their reservations held but didn't book.

  • bleh..all gone..all the promo prices gone..no fun when it's up at OzB

cant see any perth to langkawi $78 one way anywhere…anyone has managed to book one?

    • Some November days for Perth to Langkawi but no return trip available. I booked and will wait for a good return flight to pop up sometime in the next 7 months…

  • I got five of us Perth - Phuket over the Sept long weekend for $120 each - amazing!

  • Crazy prices!!!!!!

  • $314 for 2 from Mel to Phuket, 14th - 28th of Oct. Absolutely crazy.

  • Is it closing down airline?

  • All gone

Can someone help me find decently priced flights for MEL-Langkawi or MEL-PHKT? Kindly appreciated :)

  • +1

Wow…first impulse buy for international airfares. Thanks OP.

  • no more tickets

  • +1

For Sydney people: there are still a few tickets left if you look around the end of October/early November period.

    Eg.
    Syd to Phuket
Departing Sydney 20 October, return 25, 26 or 27 October
    $143 return

    • Not anymore thanks to this comment… been trying for the past 40 mins and kept loosing my tickets coz it's sold out :(
