  • Says "Manufacturer refurbished" - there seem to be a few places doing around this price on the Bay.

    • They are cheapest as they offer free shipping

All the others charge for shipping

You can also submit an offer and get it cheaper

  • That's a weird looking mSATA connector.

    • +4

That's because M.2 SSDs, not SATA

      • +13

Thanks. Starting to get behind the times it seems. Better hide in the PABX room, or I suppose they're getting rid of those too.

    • +2

      That's because it's an M.2 connector.

      http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2

  • +1

Please add Refurbished to the description. They are NOT new.

  • I personally would use them as external drives, a case for them is cheap

  • Wished I'd find some 2242 at that price point, refurbished or not. Still a good deal for a 128GB M.2 SATA drive.

  • +1

Bought 5 for $142 delivered 2 weeks ago. Last week they started to charge $6.5 for shipping :(

    • Must be more demand now, probably because the word spreads around. Just paid $155.50, though I'm still ok with that.

  • -1

Damn just bought a 120GB SSD on Gumtree for $40…

  • +3

    what does refurb even mean?

if it fails it goes back to the OEM and they crush it

it sounds like to me they are just pulls when they upgraded to 256gb

    • +1

if it fails it goes back to the OEM and they crush it

Yeah, you'd think it would cost them more than $38 to refurbish them. Much cheaper to destroy.

    • Eg. Dell manufacturer refurbs are usually when pulled out for upgrades, when a customer sends back an item for RMA but tested working correctly (user error) or used in a proof of concept eg Dell gives their customers a new system or part for testing in their current environment in order to up sell (but obviously nuked upon return).

    • How do you even refurb an M2 SSD? Clean the connectors with some alcohol rub and call it a day?

      Super bargain though.

  • +13

bit late to the party on this

you could at least link the source of this idea and pics

      I agree, pretty dodgy…
You've stolen the benchmark pictures without giving credit. Also they're for a different drive, you've linked to Sandisk SSDs, those benchmarks are for LiteOn SSDs. M.2 is nowhere near as common as the SATA interface and these drives are tiny and can't be mounted like normal HDDs. This deal required some PC knowledge and explanation but you haven't offered any of this. If you don't understand all this then this isn't a bargain and this deal doesn't explain this (and gives incorrect info).

      • +5

This doesn't change that it's still an inappropriate use of a negative vote. To me, it's still a good deal even if he's stolen it from elsewhere.

        • +4

Yeah doesn't make any sense, this isn't school

        • +5

It's poor form to steal without attribution but that's not why I gave the negative vote.
It's a bad deal however to post something of a reasonably technical nature that has incorrect information, that doesn't explain what's required to get it working and will end up with people buying things that they can't use in my option.
It's my first negative vote in my 4 years here, I don't have anything against EC and I can see my post above is getting downvoted even though it points out factual mistakes in the post but I think these deal needed to be written a lot better. As it stands it's confusing, incorrect and unhelpful. And not linking to the forum where you can get the answers is silly.

        • +1

@munted: I agree, credit should have been given, I agree, this deal could have been written better, yet, it's still $38.50 for a 128GB M.2 SATA drive (refurbished or not). Blame the poster, not the deal. ;-)

        • @munted:

I agree due to the technical nature I have already seen a few jump the gun but have not realized the difference between PCI-E & Sata etc. But regardless its a good deal & the responsibility with all tech products is on the consumer to make sure its the right part and to research properly.

        • @daerka: If the Poster fixes the deal then the Neg can be removed, or if the issue is perceived as irrelevant according to the sites rules then Admin can remove the Neg. Regardless, unless @Munted is breaking the rules with his Neg vote then there is no reason why he shouldn't cast it as such.

        • @Ebany: You've read those "rules"?

        • @marchi:

Yeah doesn't make any sense, this isn't school

will i be called to the principals office

        • @easternculture: Why didn't you put a link to the OCAU thread where you took this from EC? I can see you posted about theearth and Buckscoop Looking Like OzBargain 2.0 but didn't want to post where you got this from, seems like a double standard no? More importantly I would have though it would be useful for OzBargainers to read the thread as lots of the questions they're asking in this deal are answered there…

My neg got auto removed but I feel like even after 6 revisions you can't properly explain in the deal what this is and what people need to get it working then my neg on people buying the wrong thing is justified. It's not a bargain if you waste your money on a small paperweight or buy the wrong parts I would have thought.

        • +1

          @munted:

Why didn't you put a link to the OCAU thread where you took this from EC?

Why are you assuming i took it from an OCAU thread. Perhaps i was looking for a drive and found this on ebay. Then posted it here. Then googled benchmarks and found those images

you can't properly explain in the deal what this is

This is why we have comments on ozbargain. SO we can discuss a deal.

        • @easternculture: You searched for Sandisk M2 SSD benchmarks and got a Google Images result of a LiteOn M2 SSD benchmark which coincidentally happened for be from the same OCAU thread? Or what exactly was your search term?

I would have thought if you wanted help on installing an M2 SSD you'd have asked in the forums as opposed to posting a deal and using Ozbargainers as guinea pigs but that's just me.

Either way appreciate your answer, please don't take any criticism personally, I've upvoted your deals in the past, just not this one for the reasons I've laid out, it's easy to get the wrong impression on the internet and I have nothing against one of the most prolific Ozbargainers around…but I reckon I've caught you out here!

        • -1

          @munted:

          https://www.google.com.au/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=…

Third result is the overclockers link

Today's lesson for you : Never Assume

        • @easternculture: Huh? Doesn't that just prove you got the results by reading through that OCAU thread? If I click on Google Images for that search that OCAU picture which has been hosted on imgur isn't there so you didn't get the image without knowing OCAU thread.

        • +5

          @munted:

after i googled lite-on ljt-128l6g benchmarks, to supplement my deal.

You first accused me for taking this deal from OCAU, now you've changed your focus to the images i posted. Does it really matter or would you prefer to buy an SSD without knowing the actual R/W speeds

Oh wait, i dont have to explain myself to you. Just be grateful that we find good deals for you so you dont have to pay Full retail. And we do the research on your behalf

        • -2

@easternculture: Today's lesson for you : Never Assume
          I think this is unnecessary.

And we do the research on your behalf
I also pointed out that this benchmark was for another drive and shared that knowledge with the community so they'd have correct information.

Just be grateful that we find good deals for you so you dont have to pay Full retail
I think two posts up I expressed my gratitude towards the deals you've posted.

Perhaps we should leave it at that.

        • +1

          @munted:

I also pointed out that this benchmark was for another drive

This deal has been edited 3 times and the benchmark was for the first drive i linked to. I was still editing the deal at that point in time and crossed out those links

        • +2

          What is this, whinge pool?

        • @misterpotatomato: You tell me.

        • @daerka: God…. Do we have to do everything for you people?!?!?

See what I did there? ;)

        • @ryang: Since you're asking… lol

    • +5

OP of the original thread here. I agree, you can at least put up the discussion thread in the body of this listing and credit those benchmarks to Tek_01.

  • I think these are B+M key. Make sure you buy the right converter with right screw position. Look at this image to see the difference :

    http://www.hwtools.net/jpg/Compatibility%20M.2%20SSD_M2P4A_1…

  • Sweet deal. I wish it would work with my laptop, but alas :P

  • +2

Be aware guys this isn't one of the blazing fast PCI-E m.2 ssds.

This is a Sata m.2. Meaning there is no benefit to this versus a standard 2.5" ssd. And this particular model performs writes much slower than most current consumer SSDs.

But for $38 i wouldn't say no if i had an m.2 slot!

  • aaaaaaaaaand they're gone

    • lots more - look at seller's other listings

  • sold out lol

    • lots more - look at seller's other listings

    • Updated with Dell 2260

  • I was at the checkout page, one left, I forgot my eBay password, had to go to KeePass, logged in… it was gone…. :/ No sdd for Arch Linux now…

    • +2

      but its 50c more!

  • I was thinking of posting these for awhile I diverted due to being on eBay and due to the nature of selling Refurb Drives (however drives come from Dell and they mostly unused); they are refurbs from their ultrabooks and laptop lines.

Keep in mind these are sata based Sandisk X110's which are moderately fast (far from the best), so installing these in a Sata adapter (vary from $6-20) are a great way to get a really cheap SSD. There are some 256GB M.2 Drives as well selling under $100 if you want more space.

I installed one in my NAS as the OS Drive.

  • I have an older laptop (toshiba satellite p750) with a 750gb hdd in the sata3 (I think this is correct) bay. Is there a way to get one of these and put it in there? would be great to chuck windows onto thats all. Would I be able to get a caddy for where the bluray drive goes and install it so it could take an ssd or it might take the spot of hdd thats already in here and I get an adapter for the sata3 to m2?

    • -1

ive linked to adapters in the OP. They are the cheapest on ebay at time of post

      Cheers

      • +1

As far as I can see that adapter doesn't have standard mounting holes and is smaller than the standard 2.5" drives so installing that would be a pain and it might be better to get one with mounting holes to secure it.

In fact mounting that adapter in any system will require a bit of messing as it will not be mountable in any case by default. I ended up buy it however because it was cheaper & just gluing the Adapter to a 3.5" bracket - not recommended.

        • Hrrm ok, little bit confused.

So ill buy the SSD and mount it using the M.2 to 2.5" Sata Adaptor $8.88 Delivered (linked above) in the slot where the original HDD was.

Then I will need to get a DVD caddy for a 2.5" HDD ( http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Brand-New-Universal-9-5mm-SAT… something like this?) and place the original hdd in it.

          Is that correct? :)

        • +1

          @jonkhorne:

Pretty much, but the $8 Adapter eastern culture has linked will be really hard to mount in a laptop as it doesn't have standard screw holes for mounting in a 2.5" slot. So, to be honest it will be easier to simply buy an off-the-shelf SSD, as to get a proper adapter that will fit will in a laptop will cost $25. WHich is almost the same cost as buying a Brand New 128GB SSD ($38+$25) which will have no messing around.

        • @Haxxa: Cool thanks for the info. Im running a 120gb ssd in my main pc so I might buy a 240 to replace that and just straight swap the old 120 into the laptop and grab the dvd bay converter thingo and put the old laptop one into that.

        • +1

          @jonkhorne:

Sound like a good plan to me :)

    • +1

Yes if you want to keep your HDD install it in your DVD Drive Caddy Using Slim DVD Drive to 2.5" HDD Adapter and then a Sata 2.5" to M.2 Caddy.

  • can someone point out what adapter I could use to put this in my macbook pro 2011?

    thanks

    • You need a M.2 to 2.5" Adapter, unfortuatley standard sized ones are expensive and it will be cheaper just to buy a off the shelf SSD after messing around. In any Case this is the adapter - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-2-5-22PIN-SATA-Adapter-7MM-Ca… (Cheaper ones can be found on aliexpress).

    • think you'll need the "M.2 to 2.5" Sata Adaptor"

  • Can these be fitted in my X230T? It supports msata however not sure if all msata SSDs are the same?

    • +1

No they are different connector and size.

      • Thanks. Now need to do some more research before pulling the trigger.

        • +1

Yer be really careful M.2 is the new type of drive set to replace mSata (also know as NGFF). But there are so many different types such as B and M keying, length and data transfer type that these are really only useful in a handful of situations.

  • would anyone recommend buying this as a 128GB USB key?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/M-2-NGFF-SATA-KEY-B-M-2242-SSD-to…

I am really behind the times with technology these days…

    • +2

No the Drives are 2260 (long version) and the USB you have linked only supports 2240 version (short version).

      • thanks.

  • +3

Be really careful before buying! There are different sized M.2 Drives 2242 (Shortest) up to 2280 (longest). These drives are 2260 which may only fit in certain adapters. So double check, also there is PCI-E and Sata versions, so be careful there too. Also don't buy these for Chromebooks they use 2242 sized adapters.

  • Are these suitable for the new i5 nuc 5th gen BOXNUC5i5RYH that I am thinking of buying? Thanks

    • Yes they are the right size (2260) - that NUC supports 2242,2260,2280. It is also right keying (M Keying) and right data transfer method i.e. Sata. So looks good to me :) - Great buy for that NUC!

      • Thanks just got one, now all I need is a great deal on the nuc.

  • +1

Phew just snatched the 3rd last one (3 left when I clicked).
Now… to find the adapters. ((Anything for around $10???))

    • +1

What are you installing it in? If just a Desktop you could snag a cheap $8 one - only will fit if you mount it with glue or through weird positioning. Otherwise a 2.5" adapter will cost minimum of $20.

  • +1

There's also lots of 5 Lite-On units for $155.50 delivered.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171651801518

    • Bought!

  • Mist it dam

  • I currently have an Acer Aspire V5 573PG with a spare mSata slot. Which adapter would I have to buy along with the m.2 ssd in order for it to fit?

    • This - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NGFF-M-2-B-Key-SATA-Based-SSD-to-… but notice how 2260 drives are longer than full-sized mSata. Kepp this in mind when buying as in most cases you would be able to install it has it will not fit. There are ribbon cable versions but generally easier just to get mSata drive of proper dimensions.

  • So these SanDisk ones are slower than the Lite-On ones based on the benchmarks?

    • +1

Possibly but its really a small difference (when comparing SSD on consumer PC's), I have bought a lot of these drives and I have had less reliability with Lite-On (two failures), though Lite-Ons are used in Chromebooks more often and are generally decent; in either case I reckon you won't notice speed difference and they should both be alright.

      • I'm only going to install this in my car - as my current 250GB (not full) laptop hard drive plugged into USB case into head unit - was an interim solution and although it's help up okay for the last year and a bit.. i think a mechanical-less option is going to last longer. :)

As long as the SanDisk is reliable that's good for me… just now to find a USB case for this thing to stick in the glovebox.

        • that a really cool idea , i have never thought of doing that

  • Trigger happy and bought one, and now doing the research on the adapter and realise that there are 2 type of M.2, either PCIe version or SATA version.

    http://rog.asus.com/308552014/labels/guides/ssd-guide-pci-ex…

The M2 adapter here is only for PCIe version
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181462726700?_trksid=p2060778.m14…

This one support M2 SATA but is too short
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/M-2-NGFF-SATA-KEY-B-M-2242-SSD-to…

This one support M2 SATA but it is even more expensive than the drive itself
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/M-2-NGFF-SATA-KEY-B-M-SSD-to-USB-…

    Anyone find a cheaper alternative?

    • The M2 adapter here is only for PCIe version=
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181462726700

I was looking at that as well. In the description is says it's B & M key?

      Type 2230-D2-B-M: 30mm(L) x 22mm(W)
      Type 2242-D2-B-M: 42mm(L) x 22mm(W)
      Type 2260-D2-B-M: 60mm(L) x 22mm(W)
      Type 2280-D2-B-M: 80mm(L) x 22mm(W)

      • I just bought one of these, it seems the B & M keying can be flipped around according to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2

"PCB of an M.2 module provides a 75-position edge connector; depending on the type of module, certain pin positions are removed to present one or more keying notches. Host-side M.2 connectors may populate one or more mating key positions, determining that way the type of modules accepted by the host; as of April 2014, host-side connectors are available with only one mating key position populated (either B or M).[2][8][11] For example, M.2 modules with two notches in B and M positions use up to two PCI Express lanes and provide broader compatibility at the same time, while M.2 modules with only one notch in the M position use up to four PCI Express lanes; both examples also support SATA storage devices. Similar keying applies to M.2 expansion cards that utilize provided USB 3.0 connectivity.[2][11][12]"

    • This is a decent one it needs to convert sata to usb so that is where the cost is going but fairly cheap at $25 - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SINTECH-M-2-NGFF-B-M-KEY-SATA-SSD…

  • It's SATA.

Edit: Doh! Clicked the wrong reply button. Bought the lot of 5 Lite-On drives, good deal.

    • I know right very good price, just keep in mind of all the adapters needed and brackets, but still at $30 a drive, wow!

      • I won't be needing any adapters or brackets, so I'm good with $31.10 a piece. :-)

        • How? Do you have a motherboard with M2 slot or laptop? If I didn't need an adapter it would be an instant buy.

        • @Haxxa: Mini-PCs. These should fit in the new NUCs as well. If you want to get a cheap start with your barebone, rather than jumping straight to PCIe, it's a good buy.

Edit: Forgot about cashrewards. It's $30.50! lol

        • @daerka:

Yer for a specific case like this its a good deal as far as I am aware NUC's have 1 or 2 slots so you'll be getting a few I guess?

        • @Haxxa: These mostly have only a single M.2 SATA slot, but I like to stock up on specials. lol I'm sure I'll use them all eventually.

  • +1

A lot of confusion in the post, keep in mind buying adapters costs a fair bit and may bulk up price (still cheap though) also M2 Drives are complex, read this great article by Ramcity (Aussie Company) which explains compatibility really well - https://www.ramcity.com.au/blog/m.2-ngff-ssd-compatibility-l…

  • Well, I just got my sister-in-laws Toshiba Ultrabook as she said it stopped working and it was a dead mSATA! This deal couldn't have come at a better time!
