    Is this place any good?

    • +2

It was alright but it didn't make me come back the next day.

    • +25

      For $5 it's great.

    • +14

Better than Mad Mex. For $5 they are worth it.

      • +6

Am I the only one who prefers Salsas over the both of them?

        • -3

Salsas is alright (which makes them better than GYG and Mad Mex)

        • +3

Yes you are, Salsas is shite!

        • +5

Salsas was good at the start but as usual the portion sizes have shrunk month after month…

I swear they are almost half the size they first started at….

        • +2

Salsa's does do $2 taco's every Tuesday (at least for Gasworks @ Newstead, BNE)

        • @allegiance86:

Salsa's has a chicken guac Burrito, so no.

GYG has an actual hot sauce, that's actually hot. So theres that.

        • +1

          @billyb67: Thats VERY TRUE!

        • Taste-wise, I'm with you, Salsas is better that those two

        • +2

nope. Salsa's taste like a bland salad.

        • lol salsas is AWFUL

        • @timohill:

Picked up four of these yesterday, they taste amazing at $2 each but unsure if they would taste as good at full price :)

    • +2

Depends on what you compare it to. I quite enjoy their spicy steak burrito with the free-flow sauces. The habanero sauce is awesome!

    • +1

Ok for $5. Certainly not worth it for full price.
It tasted a lot better when they first opened in Brisbane, but they have since gone downhill like most places do.
I only go there as a last resort. That just about sums it up.

    • +1

      No.

    • It's awesome much better than mad mex.

    • +23

      You're all missing the point.

By far the best thing about these guys, over every other mexican place, is the little self-serve chilli sauces. You can choose whatever you want: sliced jalapenos, Smokey chipotle sauce , mild jalapeno vinegar sauce, fiery habanero sauce, etc.

You can put them into little cups and take back to your table, to administer the right flavours in exactly the right amounts. And they are Super Delicious.

The food is great, but it could suck and still be fantastic, cause it's all about those sauces.

      • I agree. I had a burrito at Mad Mex and found it weak. They didn't have the self-serve sauces that GYG had.

        • +1

They should have the sachets of Tapito hot sauce. Almost everywhere ive been in Melbourne has them.

      • they put sauce into cups, just ask them for it, they do it when you get take away quesadilla

        • +1

Well now I know for next time! It certainly wasn't obvious like GYG. I use 1.5 cups per burrito too.

        • @eug:

You know the biggest problem, only Salsa's in Bridge Rd, Richmond, puts El Yucateco Hot Sauces on the tables. That stuff is phenomenal if you haven't tried it, but its HOT!

      • +3

Ruined my first lunch with my over zealous sauce application. Learnt quickly that "my" hot and Mexican hot are very different! I hit up medium now.

      • +1

        Agree 100%, dat sauce

  • +5

I've had one of these. I paid $12 for a burrito and it was 70% rice.

    • +6

Maybe your store was n00by. I've had quite a few and find the rice-to-meat-and-others ratio just right. I did have one from a new store that didn't taste satisfying though.

They should be $10.90 if I remember right.

      • Well they charged me extra for brown rice which I didn't ask for. Didn't find out about it until later when I looked at the receipt.

    • +2

Lucky you, mine was at least 90%.

  • +2

Try the barramundi burrito. Agree value is lacking at full price but I'd take these $5 ones all week long.

    • That's a hit and miss also. I have never tried but a few of my friends have told me that they had a very fishy taste.

      • +9

It does have a fishy taste. Tastes just like barramundi. That's why I was recommending it.

    • +3

Well tough. You can only have the offer for 5 days long.

  • +2

I love their burritos, but why do I have to wait for a month before I can buy them for $5?

    A new age marketing tactic??

  • +1

I just wanna say that its a whole lot of rice.

    • +1

Who asks for rice anyway? I almost always cut the rice out, and get beans.

  • At $5, it's a great deal.

  • Overpriced pocket of rice!

  • +4

That's lunch and dinner sorted for the first week of uni!

  • +1

I'm an ozbargainer. IMHO, if these were priced in the $8 range, then they would be perfectly comparable, valuewise, to the majority of takeaway lunches I'm familiar with.

Therefore, they are a few dollars dearer… However, as far as burritos go, in the two GyG places I've been to, they've certainly hit the spot. They were very good burritos.

    • -1

      you are not a bargainer.

      • +2

I'm sorry you feel that way.

  • Thanks OP! Great deal! Looking forward to going!!

  • +2

Have loved their burritos for a while. Haven't noticed a drop in quality, been eating them since 2010.

  • Recommend the Anzac square branch for anyone in Brisbane.

  • +2

Spicy chicken burrito bowl with brown rice and heaps of free coriander and few jalapenos for that tangy spicy punch….lunch and dinner sorted for the work week! thanks OP!

  • +2
    • $54 for corona? lol. Being an oz bargainer, you should know there's cheaper than that. Don't be fooled by the false advertisement that is Dan Murphy's lowest liquor prices.

  • +2

If Tuco were alive today, he'd utter an enthusiastic but tough sentence that started with an upside-down exclamation mark, and ended with a right way up exclamation mark.

Thanks man, will definitely get in on this. ¡Long live Mexy March!

  • New GYG going up around the corner for me, gonna be MINTOX

  • I never really gotten into burritos… had a few from the usual places but each one never left me with wanting more.

    Good bargain though for $5.

  • Too bad there aren't any stores nearby

  • Good price but I know I'm going to forget this come march

    • +1

That's why you put reminders in your phone/calendar… Mine is full of future deals :)

  • +6

I eat at GYG at least once a week. $10.90 for a chicken burrito bowl and add $1 for a can of soft drink is good value for money when compared to your other fast food chains. The ingredients are always fresh, meat is very tasty and the selection of free sauces are delicious!

I rather spend $11 at GYG than Subway, KFC, Nandos… etc…

    • Agreed.
I've only tried it once when visiting Sydney. The Rhodes outlet served up a great pulled pork and bean burrito.
Nicest fast food I've had in ages (previous nicest was Ogalo's).

      • You should get out more.

        • So I choose not to pay for overpriced crap on a regular basis, and you're saying I should?
          Nice one.

  • This is proportionately a better deal in WA and North QLD since for some reason burritos are $1 more.
I guess that's what I get for living in Boomtown.

  • -7

Nothing beats Chipotle Mexican Grill, not Mad Mex nor GYG, nope.

    • +1

where the hell is Chipotle Mexican Grill ??

    • +11

That's as useful as saying nothing beats El Huequito* - not Chipotle, not Mad Mex, nope.

      *in Mexico City

What's relevant to us is what's good here. We can't fly to the US for lunch.

After three minutes membership, you post that clanger.

Must be a record. Well done!

    • -1

      You are a funny dude.
Can't believe they no one gets your sarcasm.
      Keep up the one liners

  • This is great news since its exam time for Open University Students over Summer.

Also first week back for 1st Semester Students On-Campus. Don't surprised if you wait a while near RMIT.

  • +2

I wish I was American for two reasons.

Hunter S Thompson was brilliant. And the Mexican food is MUCH CHEAPER there (also much better).

  • This is a pretty good deal. Better than a Big Mac - half of them that I've been getting have been cold!

  • Their website informs me that the Toowong Village (QLD) store had a free burrito opening day on 26 Feb… OzB how did we miss this!

    • It was all over Facebook, how did you miss it ?

      • Isn't the purpose of Ozbargain so I don't have to check company Facebook pages?

        • Apart from the fact it WAS posted on ozbargain, it came up on my Facebook feed almost every day for the last two weeks. You didn't have to go looking for it at all… Just saying don't know how you missed it..

        • @billyb67: With 2 comments. Cmon now, it's not like it made the front page. And I don't use Facebook. In any case, no harm done. Moving on..

      • Touché! Need to keep a better eye out :)

  • Is it all stores or just World Square?

  • whew just mised the giant que by 2mins, qued, ordered and received all in 3-4mins

  • +2

Queues were pretty long at Australia Square at 12:30pm but I was in and out within 15 mins.

    • Do you need to print out the coupon and bring it to the store?

      • +1

Nope, just turn up and order.

    • +1

I was in and out within 15 mins

      So was the burrito ;)

  • +1

Anyone tried the pulled pork burrito? How's it?

    • +1

The pork's the best! I buy the bowl though but same ingredients.

  • +1

Pork flavour is one of my favourite ones.
    No coupons needed.
The place was packed when I went today. (Parramatta Westfields)
In case anyone was not reading the ad properly like me, it's $5 for 1 burrito OR 1 Corona.

  • +1

You'd probably will get asked if you want guacamole, sourcream and brown rice. Be advised each of this is extra and your burrito or burrbowl will end up at $8.5 instead of $5

  • FROM THE T&C'S

"The GOMEX loyalty program is eligible for both earning GOMEX points and redeeming $GYG dollars."

The world square restaurant is refusing to redeem gyg dollars :( wtf

  • Am i the only one wondering why anybody would choose a mini burrito over a full sized burrito? Am i missing something here?

    • I can only think that it caters to the female mindset: He won't love me if I'm overweight, so I'll starve myself.

      • +4

A real ozbargaineress would buy the full-sized one and save half for tomorrow's lunch!

  • +1

Got one at North Sydney and found the about 6 pieces of chicken in my chicken bowl… rest of it was packed rice. Disappointing that the ratios aren't anywhere near what they are usually when full priced

    • GYG is my fave burrito place. The ones I've bought during this promo have been the same ratio as they always have been.

I have had variances in the past though. I think it's more of the person making it rather than this promo.

      • Maybe I did luck out.. I've bought from them before without any problems. Ah well!

  • What a great week of burritos it has been. The customer service at Guzman Y Gomez at Canberra City especially, but also Belconnen Mall, is great. Friendly greeting and patience while I stuff around with my confused orders and busy wallet despite that I bet that they are getting smashed with orders all day and all week. Oh and the turn around time on orders was excellent, they are a well oiled machine. They definitely will be seeing the occasional return visit from me for a full priced burrito in the future.

  • +1

Just walked past the brisbane post office square one today, how dead do they look compared to last week! lol
