Ben & Jerry's is one of the few brands that I don't mind paying more for. The best ice cream and ethics
ethics
Ok. I was curious and read this.
They use a lot of buzz words like commit, honour, believe etc but what do they actually do that is ethical compared to other ice cream manufacturers?
Creating a new flavour to fight for climate action support for Torres Strait Islanders
That and a whole lot of talk. Good on them. I guess.
Yes lol because we all know how ethical Unilever is. They own Ben and Jerry's who justified using child labour by saying:
Ben & Jerry’s head of values-led sourcing, Cheryl Pinto, “said that if migrant children needed to work full time, it was preferable for them to have jobs at a well-monitored workplace,” according to the New York Times.
True, but only in the sense that if you have to lose fingers it's preferable to have them removed under anaesthetic rather than having your hand shoved into a meat grinder
Honestly, really appreciate you bringing this quote to attention - it's not something I knew about prior, and after reading into it a little, it's quite worrying how pervasive child labour is in the USA. However, Ben & Jerry's is also currently and historically huge in advocating for a number of human rights, including marriage equality and abortion rights, among many other political issues (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-15/ben-and-jerry-says-it…).
They've also been very vocal about their support of the Palestinian people, such as how they deserve aid and support and should stop being bombed by a US-backed army. I'd garner that the reason that quote is coming back is because conservative media (e.g., Canary Mission, Fox News, NY Post) are trying to degrade the credibility of the company by pulling up issues from the past.
Please think critically - if a news article really cares about telling the whole story, why would the only quote from the entire NY Times article be the one seemingly justifying child labour? The whole NY times article discusses the systemic flaws that lead to migrant children needing to seek work to pay off debts from sponsors, the quote is in the context of "this is a bad situation, we do what we can".
Child labour is bad. Genocide is bad. People will try and put others down in order to bolster their side of the argument - that doesn't mean they're right.
Free ice cream on this day doesn't make sense.
