FREE Multi-Domain / SAN SSL Certificate from WoSign

50

Via Hacker News. WoSign, a Chinese Certificate Authority, is offering multi-domain / SAN SSL certificate for free for up to 2 years, allowing up to 100 validated domains to be bundled into a single certificate. Not sure whether it has always been free (doubt it), but a free certificate would be useful before Mozilla's Let's Encrypt is live later this year.

Purchasing it could be a bit tricky because the site is entirely in Chinese and pretty slow from Aust. Freerk Ohling's blog contains step by step to get the certificate.

See discussions on LowEndTalk especially this comment to properly chain the certs together to be recognised by modern web browsers.

A free chinese SSL certificate should be ringing your alert bells.
Obviously consider your customers first when signing up to this.

    • A website with customers? I probably won't use this. For inter-server communication and other not so important sites? I might give it a try. Note that unlike CloudFlare's CDN SSL, you actually use your own private key.

      • Is Ozbargain going to get this? That would be frugal. :)

    • Not sure I understand your scepticism. Yes, the CA system is broken, but these guys have root certs in mozilla & ms CA lists so it won't cause a problem. If you're worried about the 'chinese' part, then make sure you double check your system root store, because the chinese gov has hundreds of certificates in it :)

  • Has anyone tried this one? StartSSL process is insanely confusing and bombs out all the time.

  • The root CA is USERTrust. There will be multiple intermediate CAs it seems. The signer CA will be "Certification Authority of WoSign —WoSign CA Free SSL". Basically, it is good for trying out SSL setup (because most browsers have USERTrust root CA cert in the trust store, unless you are using really old browsers). Not good for real business as it is still obvious that it is a free certificate.
