    Do they have CGNAT?

    • +4

      This is the important question.

edit: I just called support and reached an Indian call centre - at first he had no idea about static or CGNAT etc… but he put me on hold and came back with a definite answer of "Static, you will get a dedicated IP address".

So I guess I am transferring over!

      • let me know how the churn process goes, i would to changeover too

        • +1

I just signed up and am waiting to "hear from them" not sure what I am waiting for lol

          • +2

@bunnybash: Tried to port to them last week but they were slow and I didn't get a good feeling from the process so I cancelled the order before my existing plan was about to renew and went with exetel instead.

They didn't ask for payment on signup?, Order confirmation email took 3hrs to arrive, after 24hrs with no update on transfer status I decided to call support and cancel the order, indian support was hard to hear and understand, never got confirmation of the cancel via email..

Signed up to exetel and was ported in under 2hrs.

            • @Bohlen: So I got switched over today, they still don't have any of my credit card details… I am not sure if I have to pay for this service lol…

It seems to be ok except that even over ethernet I am only measuring about 600 down and 40 up, which is way less than 1000 down and 50 up.

My mate got Superloop to pricematch when he tried to cancel, but when I tried Superloop only offered me $99 for 1000/50 YMMV

              • +1

@bunnybash: I've just received an email bill for a full month even though I was never ported to them, plus new provider I did port to (one week so far) which charged me upfront said Id been disconnected and they're sorry to see me go etc but still shows my services active with them…

I assume southern phone support didn't cancel the transfer like I asked OR they've just ported me again anyway.. who knows. Either way it's going to be an interesting month with them both trying to charge me for the same month..

Bit crazy you can have your phone or internet ported away without any confirmation first from the customer to prevent Sim / service hijacking.

          • @bunnybash: as am i.

      • This would be great to know the outcome. If true, customers wanting a static ip would save $10 over Superloop per month. Even when using the Black Friday deal.

        • Ive been with superloop for 3 years and have used the static IP service for a while, it was $5 extra per month (at the time, not sure if thats changed.) Worked as expected and you could call up and have it changed to a fresh IP address if necessary.

      • +1

        ipv6 support?

      • apparently you can opt out of cgnat. at that point you get a dynamic ip and just use dynamic dns service i guess.

      • Just to clarify, a true static IP address with Southern Phone costs $7.05 a month, I believe the free IP address you can ask them for is a "sticky" public one.

        • Sounds like you could be right. When I asked for a public IP address and disable CG-NAT, I was not advised of any price increase.
The dynamic IP is good enough for me at $85 for 1000/50.

    • +3

My service was activated overnight (~3AM). I just messaged their online chat support and eventually got them to switch me over to a public IP (free) but I won't know if it has worked for 2-4 hours.

When I asked "can you disable CG-NAT on my service?" they kept saying "we don't have CG-NAT" (they clearly do but probably just don't use/know that term).

Further asking, "why is my router IP address different to what I can see externally?" was met with "is your connection working?" and "is your speed effected?" multiple times. At one point they even semi-acknowledged they have CG-NAT (or other) as they tried to sell me a static IP for $8/mth, of which I refused.

What got me there was mentioning that "I can't access my internal network from outside my home", they then asked "do I have security cameras?", I said "Yes" (I don't, but same same).

      • +2

Thanks for posting this. A hard pass for me.

      • UPDATE: it's been 12 hours and I'm still behind CG-NAT and cannot access my home network outside of home even though they insist their systems are saying I have a public IP. (Yes, I've rebooted my NCD, router, forced interface resets in OpenWRT, etc. basically I know what I'm doing/saying.)

I've since contacted support and they've raised an internal ticket to assign me a static IP… which may take up to 5 days!

        Do not do it.

        • Sounds like support are going to look after you though.

        • +1

spin up a box externally and route traffic back while they get you static or dynamic ip up?

        • +2

Ok so I started writing my next message with the heading… We might have a bigger problem with the CG-NAT setup.
After the customer service agent tried a few times to apply a public IP address.
Got escalated to next level and they had it sorted within a few minutes.
I can confirm I have a public IP and can access the network from outside, awesome!!
I only have good things to say about Southern right now.

          • +1

@TravHall: I got escalated to a "Natasha" when I contacted support this morning. She fixed my problems in 2 minutes. All is well again - 4 days of hell was kind of worth it for the savings I'm getting.

Somehow the non-Australian support staff do not know what CG-NAT is or how to properly apply free public IPs. I've asked Natasha to bring that to light and hopefully have their training/scripting improved. Also, static IPs are charged $7.50/mth - which I also had removed and credited by Natasha. (Hello if you see this)

            • +1

@HcNguyen111: Yes Natasha is the same person that sorted it out for me.
The most important thing is, there first level customer service were helpful and escalated quickly enough to Natasha when the IP update wasn't working.

Southern Phone are doing everything right, from price to speeds and customer service. My evening speeds have been faster with Southern than with Superloop, so for a saving of $25 per month and more consistent speeds, it's thumbs up from me.

              • +1

@TravHall: Yep, other than that rodeo (a minor hassle more than anything) their speeds (I'm getting 103/18 consistently), price/savings, and everything else are great. Has been smooth since the IP change.

            • @HcNguyen111: It’s called a static public ip address.
And it’s normally a standard charge at all ISP’s (additional fixed price per month).

  • Was just about to sign up with dodo $68.90 100mbps now this at $65 that's a bargain but are they any good ? does anyone have comments about these guys please .

    • +8

Have to be better than stuff I've read about DoDo

    • +3

      Please don't dodo. Rip off.

    • +1

if you have power and gas with dodo you get an extra $5 per service off NBN charges per month. I pay $58 for 100 mbps, static ip and have been with dodo nbn for 11 years, I was with dodo back in adsl days as well. Personally I've never had any issues with their service so I don't get all the dodo bashers. The one issue I had with service dropouts was ta-daah! poor copper in the area, which was an NBN co issue. Which NBN co. came out three times before they resolved it.

  • +4

Looking up my address it says good news nbn is available at your address but it only shows me 100Mbps and nothing faster?

    • same here

    • Are you FTTP?

      • I'm on FTTP and the highest speed it says I can get is 250Mbps?

        • I checked with mine and it offered the 250 and 1000 plan. Maybe a specific line issue at your place?

          • @Weshouldgetsushi: Yeah true…I'm okay with 250 but worried the server might be over East, as I'm in WA.

            • @bobwokeup: Prob best to check with other isps if you want 1000 speed. I feel the inability to give more speed is an indicator of their service quality.

    • I'm not sure if their ordering system is capable of showing this info but there could be a bandwidth limitation at your POI. I recently switched ISPs and wanted to activate my second port (FTTP) before cancelling my service on port 1 so I wouldn't be without internet. I got denied because there were bandwidth problems. I could either churn or provision a 100 Mbps service instead.

    • yeah same on HFC

    • Me too. HFC.
Same with other local random addresses.
Only time I saw anything else - only 250Mbps option - was in the city.
If that's how their service starts…

    • Same. Gigabit HFC is available, but they don't offer it. So what's the point?

      • Gigabit HFC is available in all areas. Not being able to get Gigabit HFC is a limitation of Southern Phone's network in selected areas.

          • @PainToad: All areas that have NBN HFC have been upgraded to reach 1GB.
End of 2025 will see this lifted up to 2GB (new range of plans out then), as stated by NBN in the next stage of upgrades.

          • +1

@PainToad: Gigabit HFC has been available everywhere since about late 2021. It really was 750Mbps with bursts up to 970Mbps. nbn removed the HFC speed bursting earlier this year and it's now more consistent with a maximum of 970Mbps.

            • @Twix: yeah I can't even get 350Mbps on a 1Gbps HFC. that's if the hardware isn't down

              • +1

@M00Cow: Not all routers and devices are capable of Gigabit even with Gigabit ports.

What is the model of your router and devices?
                Wired ethernet or Wi-Fi?

                • @Twix: cheers, yeah I tried with a laptop plugged directly into the NTD (you should have seen all the attempted incoming connections). But yeah I initially tried with my Asus.with 2.5g wan then a spare Uniquiti Edge router 1g wan, port with hardware nat offloading enabled & then the laptop directly.

    • Has anyone been able to get 1000/50? If not might be worth a neg till they fix their system.

      • Same here. Brisbane inner suburb on HFC. No option of 1000.

      • I'd be surprised if anyone gets full 1000/50.

        Anecdotally I got this
Date /Download (Mbps) /Upload (Mbps) / Ping (ms)/ Jitter (ms)
        2024/12/18 00:24 / 919.63 / 35.97 / 14.47 / 0.21

You have to scroll to the right using the icon.

      • +1

There isn't one (for my address.)

  • looking at the fine print, they seems to be owned by AGL. Not sure if they are good or not though.

    • +1

I had 6 months of AGL internet (invoice would be paid to southern phone) before churning to exetel on 100/20 FTTP, no complaints at all, never without service.
Never had to contact support though, but easy enough to cancel on the AGL app etc…

  • +2

Does the 50% cashback on TCB only applicable for the 1st month? And Southern Phone currently can't do a delayed connection date, only as soon as possible.

    • I see 32%.

      • +3

        TopCashBack is 50%

  • +5

No idea if they are any good, their website won't even load for me… but also found this:
    https://www.acma.gov.au/articles/2024-05/southern-phone-pays…

    • +3

This kind of stuff is why I stopped churning NBN providers. It's nice to save $10 a month, but when the internet is down that $10 doesn't seem worth it.

I've had two issues when on NBN, one on a budget provider, one on superloop. Budget provider was useless, kept trying to reset things on their end, ending calls with "give it half an hour and we'll reset something or another" and having to keep calling them back to tell them it's still broken.

Superloop was a couple of weeks ago, on hold for 15 minutes, 15 minutes diagnosing, tech organised for the following day (NBN tech who fixed something at the street level). It was so much less painful.

    • Maybe they'll improve after getting a hefty fine like this; that or they'll end up going broke as the next fine will be more.

  • +4

They appear to at least not have the dodgy 30 day notice period to leave that most others do now…

    From their customer terms:

    You can cancel your service
If you need to cancel your service, you can do so by simply getting in touch with us. Your
Agreement will end within 5 business days of your cancellation request and, unless your
Agreement says otherwise, you’ll receive a refund for charges paid in advance for the
remainder of your Billing Period on a pro-rata basis. See clause 6.3 for information about your
    Billing Period.<

I'll likely look into this as anything to get away from Spintel stooging me after connection, without notifying me that I couldn't get the offered sign up deal as I had been with them in the past.

  • +2

We were with them around 3 years ago, the customer service (If you could call it that was woeful, the min wait time was at least 1 hour, we could not leave them fast enough.

    • )

    • +4

the min wait time was at least 1 hour…

Superloop isn't much better for keeping you on hold on the phone, and man the oboe and flute tune you have listen to while waiting is torture….where's the noose?

  • +2

    1.6/5 on Productreview

  • +2

Only 100Mbps on HFC… weird. Would join if higher speed was available.

  • Oooh thanks for sharing. I’ll have to hop on this

  • +2

I put my address in, which has HFC, but the maximum it offers is 100mbit. So either this is a bait and switch or something is wrong.

    • +2

They appear to have an issue with qualifying addresses by the looks, very odd maximum speed limitations that you don't see with the others.

  • Aagh I have to wait for another 3+months so I can get my cashback from the Optus deal. Advance connection date is only available for Jan 2025

  • +1

These guys used to run the AGL nbn service. They were fine in the period I had them

  • Do these guys have POP in Melbourne?

  • No matter how many times I select 15th January as the connection date (to wait for Exetel) it shows as 16th December on the review details/confirmation screen. Very suss, watch out anyone else coming from Exetel! Removed my + on this basis.

  • Good prices. Superloop have just increased prices so need to move.

  • Is this the cheapest 1000/50? Interestingly available at my address.

    • +1

      It would appear so.

I don't want to ring them to sign up haha - I want to book a date in advance.

  • Bad provider not worth supporting

  • Would've jumped from superloop to this if only they offered 1000/50 for my area (superloop does)

  • +2

Buyer Beware! Never seen a company where 94% of customer reviews are negative https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/southern-phone-mob…
1.3 out of 5 stars rating, wawwaweewa!

    • +1

To be fair to them, looking through many of the latest reviews more then 50-70% seem to be related to mobile plans and not NBN issues.

    • I heard the same horror stories about Circles.Life for mobile and they were awesome, I'm not with them right now as they don't do 5G but I would go back without a second thought when 5G is introduced… But everyone told me they were bad and reviews average, they were not a problem.

My bank for 15+ years. If I have to go by productreviews I should switch out all our accounts immediately.

  • I am with them for 3 mobile plans. $20 for 50 gb with unlimited talk and text. Actually have 3 numbers with them. Only interaction with them was on the phone to combine the 3 seperate accounts into 1 account. I think I have been with them for a year or so now and no complaints…

  • The upload speed is too low… I would be willing to sacrifice some download speed for a symmetrical speed of 500/500…

  • +2

Always try reaching out to the retention team with your current provider to match/beat this price. I’ve done so successfully with Superloop twice from past deals (am happy with them so far, no issues/major outages).

  • +3

My experience, selected the 1000/50 plan from Southern at 8:30pm on 16/12
Superloop sent a cancellation request email at 2:50am on 17/12
Received a successfully ported email from Southern at 4:10am on 17/12
Modem auto connected, no settings required
    Speedtest is showing 930/45

    Awesome work Southern, thank you!!!

And a note for anyone leaving Superloop, they mention the 30 day minimum charge to the account as per agreement on the cancellation email - thanks, I'll remember this :)

    • do you have to cancel with superloop, do not want pay double for a single month?

      • No it all happens automatically when Southern request the NBN service transfer.

        • i wanna switch from superloop to southern phone

        • so my undersationg to give them notice now , so end will be 16/1 , and request new service to be activ about 10/1
explain my logfic if that is correct thinking
          cheers
          DT

          • @Flakuciernie63: You were right, even though Southern transferred the NBN connection, I still needed to cancel with Superloop, otherwise they would have continued charging me every month.

      • You will pay the remainder of your pay month with superloop so make sure you cancel them

    • Hey TravHall, sounds a great move…..do you know or can you check please if you're indeed given a static IP address for free with Southern as they told bunnybash

    • just so I'm clear, If my billing cycle ends 6th Jan 25, Ideally I give Superloop notice on 5th Jan to cancel, then plan for this plan to start 4th Feb or so? This way I don't pay much to superloop for no service?

      • That's what I'd do yes.
