Silverstone Grandia GD08B HTPC Case $109 @ CPL Online

110

Hi everyone,

I've been looking around for a replacement HTPC case that could house more than two hard drives and came across the SilverStone GD08. This bad boy can take 8x 3.5" hard drives in addition to 2x 5.25" drives and 2x 2.5" drives.

Anyway - after seeing it at the usual places like PC Case Gear and Umart for $165, I discovered that CPL currently has it for $109. A big saving of $56 (or 34%). Staticice listing here: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=gd08+-kit&s…

silentpcreview.com has a great write up here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/SilverStone_Grandia_GD07_GD08

I grabbed one this arvo and moved all my gear from an antec nsk2400 into it - it's a great case.

Cheers

I have their GD06 HTPC case. It's fantastic. Nice and compact.

They also have the GD06 for an extra $19:

Doesn't support as many drives (4 x 3.5"), but has a nicer finish for a HTPC IMO.

    • What made the 06 great for me was the 340 mm depth. Meant it would fit any TV stand that would fit my amp. My previous one was even nicer but too deep (full ATX).

    • i was going to go the GD07 which has a similar front to the GD06 but was a bit too deep for our tv cabinet. i know the GD08 is pretty average looking but ours is hidden away :)

  • not bad, which motherboard and cpu will you put?

    • nothing special. specs are:

      gigabyte ma78gm
      phenom II 905e
      4gb ddr2
      vertex 4 120gb
      radeon 6550
      2 x 3TB
      1 x 2TB

hoping to expand the drives and start using flexraid.

Bitfenix Prodigy much better, this one can't support higher cooler

if you're after a cube case that 'support higher cooler' and a mini ITX mobo then yes it's better i guess.

if you're after a decent HTPC case, the GD08 is much better because it fits in with tv / hifi gear, takes more drives and supports a full ATX board.

      good comment though

        LOL good comment though

  • Wow what a beast. I can imagine this replacing my Microserver.

If you were to keep this on 24/7, what mobo/cpu would you use?

    • -1

lol i've kept mine on 24/7 since 2008

specs are in the comment above (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/181159#comment-2540385)

Funny that CPU was released in 2009….

        • true that. i turned it off on 5/5/10 to upgrade the CPU and ram. original system was built 11/03/2008. i should have clarified that 24/7 means it's powered on and running 99% of the time. maintenance, power outages and holidays are other times it's powered down.

          good comment though

  • My current HTPC is a NUC - so much smaller than these. All my hard drives are in a NAS in another room. A NUC can be easily hidden out of sight. One of these beasts, not so much.

i was considering going down this route but i hated the idea of needing two computers on (weather it's a small server or a NAS and a HTPC).

our tv cabinet stores the amp and htpc behind doors so we cant see them anyway. more efficient to have one box that does it all rather than multiple. having said that - everyone has their own requirements

    • +2

Can your NUC record 3 TV channels at once?

      • -1

Wow, you must have the whole set of Global Shop Direct

      • No. But who watches (or records) FTA in Australia any more? The quality and the scheduling are both terrible.

I have four tuners in my older Media Centre PC - and they're just sitting there idle.

You can always plug in USB tuners if they're a requirement, and I did read that the newer NUCs will have swappable lids - and there'll be a lid with a built in Hauppauge tuner.

        • +2

My tuners get a flogging with FTA so not everyone's situation is the same.

          @scottb721:

yeah same here. we have quad tuners and the wife often manages to use all 4.

@ideasman:I know what you mean. Two dual Compros in mine.

I built one of these back in 2008 with an Opteron 265, problem was cable management is terrible and they look larger than life, sold it at a loss after a month

    • cable management is a moot point if you know how to build properly. none of the cases I've had over the years had "cable management" but they were still super neat. i had no trouble with this case either.

I'd like to see a picture of your internal cabling in this case

  • 2.7% paypal processing fee. Is this allowed??

    • who knows! CPL's work ethic baffles me.

i chose pickup because I thought it would be easiest. walked in, no one else waiting in line but had to wait 5 mins while the two guys behind the counter argued and answered phone calls. finally paid but then had to wait another 20 mins for them to bring the case out.
