FYI Netflix maybe/are launching in Australia in the next few months, so a yearly subscription may not be worth it.

    • +10

You really think it will be as cheap as the US version with as much content as here?

      • +2

The price and the date is announced.
And it would have less content compared to US.

    • +1

March 2015 is the official date.

    • +15

So? You do realise you can still change regions so open up different shows that won't be available on the AU version of Netflix. That alone is worth just a couple of dollars a month for a smart DNS..

      • Yep. Also Netflix isn't the only international service that works with Getflix.

        • Yup, I use Hulu's free service a bit too. I also believe that Netflix's Au offering will not match their homeland's offering at startup and into the short term future anyway…

      • +1

Absolutely. You just have to check out moreflicks.com to see the huge range of Netflix titles across various regions to see the value in Getflix even once Netflix launches locally.

        • +1

Definitely agree. I will certainly keep Getflix after Netflix launches locally.

  • Agree with above, I love the Getflix service (and have annual) but may not be worth it in a matter or weeks unless you want to watch other overseas video

  • +4

Getflix Australia Day Sale….read as "We're going to go bust as soon as Netflix arrives sale"

    • +1

I got it for Netflix - but ended up watching Hulu much more. The video quality also seems better on Hulu.

      • +2

You must be the only one, Hulu's ad's killed me, and the lag between each ad was incredibly irritating.

        • Hulu have ads as part of a paid service? Glad I stuck with Netflix.

        • @elektron: I think that's not hulu plus

        • +2

          @brongz:
No that is with Hulu plus… The more recently released something is the more ads it tends to have too!

        • Yeah, the ads are annoying, but most of the content I want is only on Hulu. Also, Hulu is slightly better in quality, so even with content the same on both, I choose Hulu. Some of the quality on Netflix films is disgraceful.

    • +1

For the $25 or so I pay a year for Getflix, I won't be cancelling my subscription any time soon. Even if Netflix Australia covered all the content in other regions, which it won't, there's also Hulu and other services that you can use it with. I'm semi hopeful HBO Go will be an option when they launch their online only (no cable subscription required) version later in the year as well.

  • +2

Netflix will not be much good for a while as a lot of content is already licensed with other providers here. So it will be quite a wait until Netflix can be what we expect it to be.

    • +2

you can change the region to any other country with netflix and keep watching any catalog of movies/tv you like.

quite frequently change between US/Canada/UK to get different stuff

      • Yep, and many do, but i suspect it will still be a minority of Netflix users as really its that mainstream here and its the those users where Netflix will need market penetration.

        • +7

I hope they buy the market dinner first

        • +3

@damoo: At least they have the movie covered

    • +6

Netflix aren't doing this. This has been discussed a number of times on here already. It was spread by an inaccurate article that had a vested interest in spreading misinformation because they're launching a competing service (I'll let you guess who that is…).

        • I'm not referring to News Corp.

Never mind, just keep spreading misinformation about it then without doing some actual research into if it's happening or not.

        • @Porthos: It's not exactly misinformation. Whilst Netflix deny it there are many users who were legitimately experiencing the issues. Whether its still happening now i dont know.

        • -5

          @Porthos:

I've linked to an overseas report that cites reputable sources, whereas you remain merely obtuse and dismissive

        • The language in that article is pretty vague, dropping words such as "allegedly" and the like in front of its statements. Netflix has stated they haven't changed their policies and I tend to believe them given so many peoples service remains unaffected. If they really wanted to stop people, all that'd be needed would be a simple verification of the postal code associated with accounts credit card. I have no doubt that some select few people have had issues, but it appears the vast majority have had no problems, and if Netflix was deliberately trying to keep people from using the service they probably could do a heck of a lot more than they appear to be doing.

        • +1

          @Smigit:

Long may Status Quo continue …

But, their motivation might change after March, when ~300k potential customers are bypassing their local product; all while Foxtel complains of them not preventing a dilution of their local licensing rights

        • +1

          @Wally: Read this - https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2355216

Read the entire thread. See the links in the thread, the actual comments from actual users of Netflix, then come back and tell me how I'm wrong and that article is right.

        • +2

          @Porthos:
Thanks for making a positive contribution to this thread rather than smug dismissal

I'd note that there were reports of changes to Android & Roku Netflix apps which would affect the less tech savvy (being a large proportion of Netflix's customer base)

Also TorrentFreak arguably broke the story of Hulu's commencing VPN blocking last year, & TorGuard lead the countervalence of the effects of that

But yes, apart from a few reports of having to reset connections, it would appear the local VPN router scene has not yet been actively disrupted by Netflix

  • +5

Regardless of whether or not Netflix do block US stream you've still got Comcast, HBO, Hulu Plus, Amazon prime etc etc. definitely worth the annual sub

    • +1

Yeah, Hulu is all I watch now.

  • +1

Netflix still works in Australia. No issues for now. I guess it is that uncertainty which someone is trying to promote… around the same time as announcement of competition…

  • Any idea when this expires?

    • -2

      Probably when Netflix Australia launches

    • +3

According to their email it's valid until 2nd February 2015.

  • having a hard time finding a step that lets me add a coupon code, anyone successfully activated it?

    • +1

Try signing up for a free trial first or follow the instructions below:

      HOW TO GET 40% DISCOUNT?

Wait no further & get started. Use Coupon Code AUSDAY40 & join us on Facebook to get 55% off on this big day.

To claim this additional offer, simply login to your Getflix account and go to the "Subscription" section here: https://www.getflix.com.au/manage/subscription

Click on Like Facebook to activate your Facebook discount. Then click on the "Promo Code" tab and enter the code AUSDAY40 to claim your additional 40% annual discount.

Once the code has been applied now subscribe for 12 months at 15% off plus 40% off using either PayPal or your credit card!

      • Ahh yep, I saw Paypal and Credit Card and my mind just autofilled the last one without actually reading it. Thanks for clearing that up for me, next time I gotta look a bit better!

      • See my maths below, but if you're getting the final price of $24.19, then the actual discount is ~49%.

They've made a mistake in the email I think. They forgot that adding two percentages together is different then sequentially reducing a number by the same two percentages.

        • 24.19 usd or aud? For me, usd.

        • @bargdebarg: was a problem with my account tech support fixed to aud

  • Cheers, extended 2 of my accounts.
It seems if you're already paid up in advance by a few months you can only pay by credit card, Paypal isn't an option.

  • Question, getflix has setup an automatic payment through paypal to renew this yearly subscription. with this discount (and facebook) I got the yearly sub for $25. Does it now remain $25 a year or will the yearly payment increase as getflix increase their prices. that is, is the discount for life?

    • +1

When I got getflix on a special offer, the confirmation email confirmed the same amount would be deducted annually which ties in with what others have said on here previously - so grandfathered.

  • Pricing examples would have been nice.
The supported sites are a little lacking. No youtube, southpark, Netflix in Europe.
Although Star Sports in India might be handy for the cricket

    • +1

You can get South Park through Hulu and it supports Netflix Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland

  • I can't seem to get 55% even thought the "fb discount" has been applied. Max i can get is 40% off. Have they changed it?

  • The maths doesn't make any sense to me.

After doing the Facebook like and the Promo code succesfully, I'm getting $24.19/year (40% discount).

This would mean the full price for a year is $40.32, which doesn't match any of their pricing plans ><

For argument sake, IF the discounted price is actually 55% as advertised, then the full price is apparently $53.75.

Anyone know why this discount doesn't add up? GST or something perhaps?

    • +4

      Figured it out everyone.

      Full 12 month price: $47.40
      15% discount: 47.40 * 0.85 = 40.29
      40% discount: 40.29 * 0.60 = 24.174

      Actual price $24.19 (~49% discount)

      Hope this helps someone.
Now I await the class action lawsuit to recover the 1.6 cent overcharge.

  • +2

i think they removed the FBplus 40% combo. max you can get now is 40%

  • 12 months - AUD $17.64 (40% discount)

Already up, applied discount code, still the same - unchanged.

  • Would you still need Getflix if you are using one of the VPN services ?

  • Will it work on an iPad to watch bbc I player?

    • Give a man a fish and all that…you could answer this yourself by clicking on the deal link.

    • Yes, if you can install the iplayer app from the UK app store. Well worth it for iPlayer access alone.

  • Any difference between Getflix and
    https://www.unblock-us.com/

Obviously unblock-us is more expensive at the moment.

    • +1

      unblock-us was always more expensive

      • Why? Does it have extra features?

        • +2

          It was first

    • I think what you want depends on what you want unblocked. They should all unblock hulu and Netflix but outside that it varies

  • -6

max i can get is 40%

    12 months - AUD $24.19 (40% discount)

  • +2

I got mine bundled with 15% off and total yearly is $17.64 AUD and thats what it says on my PayPal

    • Also got $17.64, been with them a while and think my base plan is cheaper than the current one anyway.

      • +1

How are you guys getting $17.64 AUD?
Best price I can get having applied both Facebook and Australia day discounts is $24.19 USD which comes up to $32.17 AUD. Almost double the price of what you are getting. Is there something I am doing wrong?

        • From last deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/171011?page=1

edit: If you are a new member, the total yearly after the FB like seems to be about $24 compared to the $18. This is because users who signed up before the price hike get an additional discount. Getflix prices went up a few months ago and if you signed up during that time they promised to grandfather those rates.

        • Sam elgreco no idea how others are getting 17.64 aud…Perhaps my other comment from the last deal explains?

        • @bargdebarg: I'm a little late, but yeah forgot to mention I am an old member before the price increases

        • @JuggaloG: lucky! Mine was an account error and tech support fixed from 24.19 usd to aud for me.

  • -5

    Complete bullshit

  • Can someone please help me how this works? I've looked at their site and it looks like GetFlix works by allowing you to watch via Netflix, Hulu etc US account (which normally you won't be able to)? GetFlix alone won't be able to watch anything right? Thanks in adv.

    • +1

correct. getflix like a gateway. sign up with getflix, change your dns number of your router or device to evade geoblocking. once pass the blocking, then go to individual sites/channels listed at getflix to watch the movies (some with extra subscription fees on top of getflix fee)

  • -5

I thought it was a bit more official than it really is. No way is this a deal. Paying to pay further for something that's not even legal in the end.

Further, you're not supporting your favourite shows much AT ALL.

    • Please show, link and quote the relevant legislation in Australia which states this is illegal.

    • NOT illegal. By the way, are you lost?

    • It's a legitimate business. They are not breaking Australian law or attempting to do anything underhanded.

You still need to buy a Netflix subscription if that is what you are interested in. You are supporting your favourite shows with exactly the same amount of money as the 300 million people that live in the US.

Also, here is a link to Malcolm Turnbull's own website where it says:

"Q: Many Australians use a VPN to access Netflix in the US. Is it illegal for me to use a VPN to access Netflix?

The Copyright Act does not make it illegal to use a VPN to access overseas content.
While content providers often have in place international commercial arrangements to protect copyright in different countries or regions, which can result in ‘geoblocking’, circumventing this is not illegal under the Copyright Act."

      http://www.malcolmturnbull.com.au/issues/new-measures-to-tac…

      • Thanks Malcolm!

  • Nice one. $24.19 us for me.

    • I think you mean $24.19AU :-)

      • No, it's showing pending payment of 24.19 usd

        • Well don't know what you've done then, as getflix.com.au clearly charge in AU$ and have done for everyone else.

        • +1

@Porthos: Oh dear! I worked it out. I setup the DNS and then paid. I didn't notice but it directed me to the USD website!!!!! Should be able to change as within 14 day period. Just undid the DNS and AUD pricing appeared. Thought it was a bit odd to be paying in USD, but just pulled out the old 28 Degrees card!

        • @Porthos: Hmmmm, cancelled pending payments in PayPal and options have reappeared in Getflix.com.au - however still in USD (not via DNS). Interesting…

        • @bargdebarg: Hmm that's very weird as to why it's doing that. Paying is USD would have been better when we were at parity, but now it almost makes me cry how quickly the AUD has crashed haha.

Hopefully you sort it all out!

        • @Porthos: The exchange is horrid isn't it?!? I've raised a support ticket. Thanks.

        • +1

@Porthos: all fixed! Their tech support is great. Also fixed another issue with android app

  • Excellent! Thanks OP! For anyone wondering this extends your subscription on top of what you have already paid for. You aren't paying twice for any period.

  • I just renewed my 2 accounts and got $10.51 AUD for 12 months - not bad!
