MK808B Plus Review

MK808B Plus Unboxing

Previous discussion here on OzB.

I personally own one of these and they've been great so far. Perfect for Kodi/XBMC and come with it out of the box. It has a REALLY good custom launcher that works great with a remote so you don't need to deal with the stock 4.4 interface.

No analog or s/pdif audio out?

    • +6

This form factor is way too small to accomodate analogue audio output, you can however get Android TV boxes that have SPDIF/Ethernet/ and multiple full size usb ports.

    • +5

Nope, HDMI only. Apparently you can use a USB hub and an a USB audio card though for 3.5mm audio.

      • Thanks. Hope you're right, or I'll be needing a new TV :-)

      • USB audio works automatically when plugged in. (And no hub needed.) Thanks.
Just need to find a way to do ac3/dts passthrough now.

  • According to the Gearbest page, it only comes with a US or EU power adapter?

    • Looks like just for the USB cable - I presume any local adapter you can plug a USB cable into would do? Can't be sure though.

    • +1

The power adapter is a 5v 2a USB plug (that you'd use to charge your phone or iPad or whatever). You can request an Aussie plug converter thing though which is what I did (and they sent it).

      • +1

Of course it won't be an Australian approved power supply.

I can't speak for this particular unit, but many similar looking units had problems with wifi and stability/overheating. Might be better to spend a little more and get something better.

        • My old tablet got really old when using the HDMI-out port and charging at the same time. I placed the tablet on a mini-laptop cooling fan next to the TV which cooled it a bit. I'm sure a small desktop fan aimed at the stick will solve most of the heat issues.

        • That was 2-3 years ago with the Rockchip chipsets. The Amlogic chipsets in these are much more stable (I haven't had any WiFi issues or overheating issues personally, compared to my old Ditter I got from that half-price DX sale a while back which was horrible).

        • @ausmechkeyboards:

          This is good to hear.

Does this support MicroSD cards? And if so, what's the limitation?

    • +1

      yes.
      - Interfaces: microSD Card, HDMI, USB2.0, Mini USB + Mini USB OTG;

    • +25

      Should've gone to specsavers

      • Yeah probably.
Didn't read the does on this post, rather, went to the product page and was reading the specs from the picture of the box, which only mentions TF cards

        • +6

for future reference TF = MicroSD

        • @scubacoles: Cheers! Never heard of them being referred to as TF cards before.

        • +3

          @SuiCid3:
          TF = Transflash

Hey guys, for running power to this device. Anyone tried/know if the USB ports on TV's is sufficient or you have to use the power adapter that comes with it?

    • -1

In my experience with similar model, yes it will work if you don't attach anything else besides a microSD card in it and HDMI, and powered through USB from the TV.
I can't say it for this model though, and it also depends on your TV too. But with 2A power input, I can even attach a portable HDD USB drive.

    • I tried to power from the TV's USB and it does not work for me unfortunately :(

      • -1

What TV do you have guys? I have a Sony 55-inch KDL-EX500 that I am trying to see if the USB power will work for this device.

        • -2

Have the exact same TV, would love to know if it will function on this too :P

        • -1

I tried it on a Hitachi 17" LED that we have in the kitchen, if that helps any…

        • -1

I dont even have one on my TV so I plugged it into the USB slot at the back of my xbox, even powers it when the xbox is off. You might have other devices that can power it other than the TV, if the USB cable isnt long enough (I think mine was) its a pretty standard cable.

  • +1

Ah I used to use one of these, now I just use a chromecast…

Good to turn a monitor into a android pc.

  • Does it support one of the lite versions of XBMC? Eg openelec?

    • openelec is not a lite[sic] version, but full version bundled with a minimal Linux platform.
Android is already small, just add xbmc/kodi.

    • They come with a customised version of XBMC that is optimised for the Amlogic chipset. It's fully functional and runs all-add ons, themes, etc.

I've been running XBMC on Amlogic devices for a couple of years now and the S805 is awesome. My unit is a bigger (Apple TV style) box however, and I can't vouch for these tiny sticks personally…

  • does this miracast work with samsung phones? I had problem with samsung and mibox , samsung had some kind of protection :(

    • +1

I've successfully used Miracast from My SG Tab S 10.5 with a Tronsmart S89 Vega Android box, which also uses an AMLogic CPU I believe.

  • remote control, how do you control the device ?

pay a little extra and get a android tv box with a remote….

    • I would think that you would use your TV remote via the CEC function. Can anyone confirm this please?

    • An Android phone should be able to control any function you want, either via app to app control (eg Spotify connect), third party remote (Yatse for XBMC) or a universal remote app such as Unified Remote.

      • Personally speaking a remote that I have to look at to use (anything with a touchscreen) is something I can't put up with.

I like buttons so I don't have to look at the thing ;)

  • +1

hmm, anyone know if there's anything similar to this that actually has a gigabit NIC on it? i don't fancy streaming my high bitrate stuff via wifi.

    • +1

You could probably attach a USB to NIC adaptor. Obviously the max. speed you can get would be around 10 Megabytes/sec .. enough for most MKVs. If you want GigE, you won't get it at this price point. You'd be looking at something like the Minix X8-H Plus.

      • thanks for that! gives me something else to look into!

  • +1

would the plex app run of this, just the viewer not the server itself

    • +1

Yes, it does. No problems at all. Source - I used one for a year.
My only issue with it was that the WiFi wasn't brilliant on it.

  • +1

Anyone got a guide for getting one of these set up. Just got one a few days ago from the last sale, plugged it in & realised I had no way of controlling it… so I need to install a remote app on both my phone (android) & this device… my question is how do I install on the device? Do I need to side load an APK while connected to a PC? (Have been too busy to spend any time on this since I got it).
    I plan on using DROIDMOTE.
    Thanks

    • plug is a usb keyboard / mouse

google play should be installed …

      • hahaha.. so simple… thanks.

  • Can I attach 3TB external hard drive through the OTG?

    • yes dont see why not. as long as its externally powered, otherwise usb powered hub will do it.

      • Thanks. I'll see once I received the item.

  • is there any onscreen keyboard in this thing?

    • +1

It's android, basically running like a tablet, so yes it has an on screen keyboard, but you'll need a mouse and keyboard to get around anyway, so not much use for it (in fact I disabled it).
Simple (cheap) keyboard and mouse combo - http://www.logitech.com/en-au/product/wireless-touch-keyboar…

      • using a usb mouse alone is more than adequate. ive got a cheappy Belkin which i picked up from MSY for $5 a while ago. I use it in conjunction with my unit (box+remote) makes like easier at times… still use the on screen keyboard with mouse…

  • So you could say this is better than the Chromecast, having more features and usability?

    • You can't really compare them … there is some overlap, but they are also different.

    http://www.geekbuying.com/item/MK808B-Plus-Amlogic-M805-Quad…

It would seem Geekbuying and Gearbest are trying hard to compete.

    • -1

or maybe they are just the same company with a different name XD

    • +1

      aarrgh … I just lost USD3.01 :(

Where can I find geekbuying's coupon for android phones when they have promo?

    • +1

Just got one from geeksbuying… thanks Clear

    • Damn, just bought one from GearsBest. I have bought from them in the past and trust that they actually sent stuff over :) How is Geekbuying?

      • +1

Processing takes a couple of days and airmail/registered airmail has always arrived in about 3 weeks for me. Support is a bit slow to respond, but it's improved over the last 2-6 months. Low priced goods get refunded without sending back or a new one sent.

    • +1

I bought two, to get USD10 off of both, you need to do it in two separate transactions.

    • Code expired :( " Sorry, the coupon cannot be used over 20 times."

      • Damn. They never used to do that.

    • looking for a new coupon…

  • Ordered one. Let's see how it is. It says it comes with XBMC. However since I couldn't find XBMC for my Samsung smart TV I migrated to Plex. Anybody would know if I could run Plex on this? I don't see any problem though.

    • XBMC has been replaced by Kodi
      http://kodi.tv/download/

      • Good to know. Cheers. That doesn't mean that Kodi is available for Samsung smart TV doesn it?

      • +1

Still good old XBMC and it is still pretty much the same sofware. they renamed it Kodi because XBMC was an archaic name referring to the older versions when it was a media center front end for the original Xbox, but since the current Xbox generations cannot load 3rd party software and is no longer capable of running XBMC, they decided to update the name.

That doesn't mean that Kodi is available for Samsung smart TV doesn it?

Kodi (AKA XBMC) can run on Smart TV's that use the Google Android operating system, but if your smart TV is non-Google, then no.

  • Ordered one too, thanks OP

  • +1

Coupon VQMDKOJO in GeekBuying doesn't work.
Gives the error, "Sorry, the coupon cannot be used over 20 times".

    • me too, thanks for posting anyhow…………..bloody Ozbargainers

      • arrrghhh, the deal is slipping away. Had to change from a Tab2 to a PC, that cost me the Geekbuying code. Now GearBest is $37.96 inclusive of coupon….. (as he rushes back to Geekbuying)

I'm off to the gym all this consumption anxiety is to much

        • Damn missed that coupon :(

  • Why not just use chromecast?
    Looks like no big difference.

    • +5

Chromecast is more for mirroring, this is more independent.

  • -2

Are there any deals on a windows 8 version? I prefer something that has proper flash!

      • Windows on that isn't activated. It's just a 30 day trial.

        • How much does it cost to activate?

      • Thanks for your reply. I'll look into it. Windows > Android IMO. Just more functionality for my purposes and especially for watching crunchyroll as you can adjust the bandwidth/quality of feed. Not sure why I got downvoted.

    • Pipo X7 is about $95 atm afaik.

  • +1

I need one of these android sticks but with ETHERNET included.

    • +1

Then get an android TV box, not sticks.

    • +3

You can add a USB Ethernet adapter to these AFAIK. This sort of thing http://www.geekbuying.com/item/High-Speed-USB2-0-to-RJ45-LAN…

    • +1

Like Binary said get an external one, cheap as chips just keep in mind it only has two USB slots (one mini) so best get a powered usb hub as well.

Some of the ethernet adapters actually double as a hub (USB slots on the side). Not all usb ethernet adapters have the same drivers though so might be worth researching if the ROM comes flashed with the drivers for it (otherwise you are having to Root and all sorts of messy stuff).

      • +1

actually after reading review says its already rooted out of the box so bonus

  • +1

Does anyone here have direct experience with one of these? I want to know if they can play large videos with AC3 audio smoothly and also H.265.

  • Seems Gearbest and GeekBuying have both now jumped the price up.

EDIT Ok bit the bullet and bought from Gearbest for USD30

  • Reviews from Amazon seem to be pretty average
    http://www.amazon.com/MK808B-Plus-Amlogic-Bluetooth-Miracast…

  • Does this come with XBMC or Kodi, and does the customised XBMC/Kodi version included allow h265 hardware decoding?
I'm looking for a Kodi client that can handle h265 to replace my RaspPi which can't, but I run a centralised MySQL database so all clients have to be on the same Kodi database version. (Surprisingly, even my old Rockchip 3188 tablet does a half decent job software decoding 720p h264, but it does fumble still)

Shame it doesn't have an IR receiver or LAN port, but guess they need to leave something out at this price point. Suppose would need to step up to a box for that. USB LAN adapters are cheap tho, so long as the android build supports it.

    http://www.gearbest.com/mice-keyboards/pp_24739.html

    • Am I missing something about these Android sticks?
Can't a bluetooth kb/mouse be used seeing as it has BT 4.0?

      • +1

Yes.. but not many people have BT KB/mouse

    • Can I plug my Logitech wireless dongle in and use my wireless kb+mouse?

  • So torn, I want this but already have the previous model (never use it) and a Pipo x7 minipc on its way.

    • +1

update (for those in same dilemma) - purchased
