Shoppingexpress has the same model laptop, but with 8GB of RAM for $299 shipped on Boxing Day. 2GB really is very very low.

    • +1

I concur but right now SE price is $319.00 with 2gb ram

    • 2GB is fine with a 32-bit OS.

      • Both Win7 and Win8 can come as 32bit editions. And they run like a dog with 2GB RAM.

        • No they don't. I have 2GB on my Compaq 621 running 32-bit Win7 and it's fine for the most part. I've never noticed Windows memory usage exceed 2GB.

        • @MrZ:
What is the response like when using Firefox and Microsoft Word/Excel at the same time?

      • +2

Are you on drugs? Cause no one in their right mind would say what you just did.

        • +2

I should rephrase. 2GB is fine for low end tasks, which is what people using a low end laptop are going to be doing. Why on earth would you need more than 2GB to browse the web, view videos, and use MS Office?

        • @MrZ:Sounds like you haven't used many laptops with 2gb ram it isnt enough even for basic stuff.

        • +1

          @holden93: No, MrZ is right.

I have a laptop with the exact same specs as the one in this deal and there are absolutely no performance issues associated with the low end tasks mentioned above.

@kamoi: Back when the Samsung galaxy s3 came out i thought the screen on it was the best ever and right now with the galaxy s5 i can see how truly crap the s3 screen was compared to 1080p display on the s5.
my point is you might not tell the difference but there is one.
ive used many laptops from 2gb ram to 16gb ram
          and 2gb IS NOT ENOUGH
im not saying it wont run but you can notice the difference when going from 2gb to 4gb.

someone who doesn't know much about computer wont notice a difference

        • +1

@MrZ: browsing the web isn't a good example, with 2GB if you open say over 20 browsing tabs you will definitely feel the lag particularly if some pages are Flash heavy or running scripts

        • +2

          @morpheu:
20 tabs? That's some super serious web browsing.

        • +1

@BTRaynes: not really, but if all you do is play Flash content like youtube videos or web games you could experience lag even with just a few tabs open, conversely if you had only google search pages with 2GB you could probably open 100 tabs without running out of memory, as they say, YMMV!

        • +2

@holden93: Mate, I've been developing software for over 20 years so trust me when I say that if there were performance issues associated with low end tasks it would certainly not go unnoticed by me.

          • Browsing the web: Sure I can notice a big difference if I have a ton of tabs open, but I don't think that can be considered low end tasking anymore. With a few tabs open at a time there are no issues. Checking email, OzBargain, Facebook, etc. All great!

          • Viewing videos: Plays back at the speed I've been accustomed to all my life. A 30 minute video will still only take me 30 minutes to watch. VLC isn't showing any dropped frames either.

          • MS Office: Unfortunately my typing speed has decreased ever so slightly, but I believe that is due to the keyboard rather than anything to do with the amount of RAM. Also there is a noticeable difference in opening a 5000+ row spreadsheet which is heavy on formulas and conditional formatting, though that is a CPU issue and probably not even considered a low end task.

          What else should I test?

Laptop is the $199 HP from this deal

          @kamoi:It's pointless arguing
you "think" there no difference and what ive experienced say's otherwise.
and life history no offense means nothing to me it doesn't make you right and certainly doesn't mean you know more then everyone else who's younger then you (such as myself).

4gb is the sweat spot for basic office web browsing iTunes vlc things like that 2gb can do it but not a smooth as 4gb.

no need to reply we already know you disagree lol

          Have a good day :)

          It's pointless arguing

          I was having a discussion…

I'm not going to argue with you. I'm happy to continue the discussion if you change your mind.

        • @kamoi: no use really its not like i can show you how a laptop runs with 2gb ram and then with 4gb ram. Well i can but not online lol. My nets too slow to upload youtube videos.

  • is there room to add more Ram on this machine?

    • Different places sell them with 4 or 8gb (I have the 4gb) so its certainly possible to swap out the ram stick, not sure if theres a free slot though

edit: yes there's a free slot

      http://youtu.be/zIBnPkt-Gus?t=2m40s

    • Yes. However, according to Toshiba:

      Memory: 2GB DDR3 (1600MHz)
RAM slot allocation: Total memory expandable to 8GB (authorised service required)

You may be able to do it yourself but it sounds like you would void the warranty (and it may be difficult, technically, to add more Ram).

If you need 4GB Ram, there is a 15.6" laptop on offer at Kogan (i know) for $329 + delivery. Quite a jump.
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-atlas-x1510-laptop/

It has a slightly faster processor and about 100 grams lighter. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Pentium-N3540-vs-Intel-Celeron…

Also worth noting that this same Toshiba C50B Celeron is also available for $268 at Officeworks, Harveynorman and Bing Lee.

Not a bargain. This is the standard price for this laptop.

Well there you go, it's funny when you want a cheap laptop you can't find one anywhere, then when it rains it pours… Laptops…

    2Gb…nah

  • +1

mmmm great now I can have 2 tabs open and I may not bottleneck.

  • +2

for those wondering if 2GB is enough, especially if your current machine is on Windows 7, keep in mind Windows 8 is more memory efficient than Windows 7, take a look here http://www.askvg.com/comparison-between-windows-7-and-window…, Win8 not only has a smaller memory footprint but you may also note the cpu graph which shows the cpu usage is slightly lower on Win8 which may translate into longer battery life

  • Ive seen one one these boot up and run and its still bloody fast, compared to my old i3 HP ProBook 4720s with 4gb ram.

  • These have been selling quite well on their eBay store, somebody bought 10 today!
