Wintal DAB+ and iPod Dock $10 Clearance. Free Pickup or + $10 Post @ Radio Parts

270

Just got back from Radio Parts in West Melb, picked up a few of these Wintal DAB+ and ipod dock radios. Not sure if anyone else aparts from me still listens to radio, but I reckon this is a decent deal.

Supposedly RRP $139, on eBay for about $90 (still overpriced), fair retail value would be about $50 I reckon. But for a clearance price of $10 I jumped on it mainly for Double J. I know I can stream off my phone/computer etc but hey… $10?

Anyway, my mini review: it hasan ipod dock - but only 30 pin. Supposedly should come with a lightning adapter, but mine didn't. Had time and dual alarm function if you want to use it as a bedside radio. The real attraction for me is the DAB+ reception. Cheapest other DAB+ radios I've seen are about $30 (eg Aldi had one recently I think). Doesn't do scrolling information off DAB+ like track title, weather, news etc that I can find. Has a (composite) video out, and an aux in.

Sound quality is reasonable for $10, won't get super loud without distortion but fine for a study, bedroom or garage/shed background music.

Not many left! They also had a few other 30 pin clearance items like wireless speakers, ipad dock, wireless docks but most of them out of stock.

  • $15 delivery to Perth. Still a good deal, 24 left at time of posting this (not purchasing, but it's cheap for what it is!)

    • $10 by truck (up to 10 KG, will ship to PO Box))

      • Nope, any 6*** postcodes are showing $15 by truck

  • Just note this warning from the page…

    "Problems with iOS7

Unfortunately the DIPD11 is currently not working with iOS7 (charging is still supported). We are endevouring to find a solution to this problem. In the meantime, don't forget the DIPD11 is still a great DAB+ Alarm/Radio in it's own right!"

    • Yeah I saw that warning - that said, I've just connected my old iphone 4S, running ios 7.1.2 plugged into this dock, and can confirm it charges corrently, plays music stored on the phone, streams itunes radio, streams tunein radio etc all just fine.

Also the box for the dock has a sticker on it saying "firmware update applied January 2012" (yep 2 years ago).

    No headphone out?
A shame. That would make it a useful dab tuner for a proper amp.

    • Haha I just said that!
      A shame, indeed.

Not unlike a similar (but better) one from DSE a few years back: also included Internet Radio… but NO Audio Out

For those with no 30-pin apple gear, Kogan has a BlueTooth device that plugs in & lets you send any compatible device audio to radio, use it as BlueTooth speakers. As said, DSE's was better, and = last price I saw was $52. (again, years ago)

Something to use your Kogan $10 voucher for? Ie, on a Free Shipping day.

PS I can only guess: No Audio Out so the cheap radio won't destroy a costly stereo…?

The thing's power block may not have isolation transformer & probably no Earth-ground

        • All SMPSes and even the no longer made 50Hz transformer PSes are isolating by definition. Did you really think the mains was somehow connected to the LV side? All your wall wart power supplies are small SMPSes. It's only poorly made SMPSes that are dangerous.

    • Agreed, that's the one that that sucks on this unit. I have a PS vita plugged into my proper home stereo, running tunein for when I need DAB+ loud at home.

Just rip one open and trace the signal. Should be fairly easy to find the line-level signal feeding the amp IC. Once found just solder it up to a couple of RCAs and mount them on the back or just rewire the 3.5mm 'Aux IN' socket already there.

  • Please note, there's no headphone jack so you can't plug it into an audio receiver or headphones.

  • These are great. Already have one and just bought a few more as back-ups. Thanks OP!

    • Any battery mode for when power goes off?

How's the build quality? does your distort at higher volume levels?

      • AFAIK , the is noo need for a battery backupo in DAB radios. they get the time from the network.

        • That's true on my radio.

However, mine has problems with daylight savings - you need to change the alarm time the night before if you want to get up on time on the day it changes, then you have to change the alarm time back for the next day.

Most people don't need to get up early on Sundays, so perhaps that's why you never hear about this problem.

      Broden?

      • Sadly no. I'll probably end up giving them away as Christmas presents :/

  • they still selling cd player

    • Hey, don't knock the CD Player! After 17 years of listening to near 100% discless audio and loving it (I converted my large CD collection in 1998 than again to higher bitrate in 2000 then again to FLAC in about 2004, took many months each time!) I recently delved back into the world of CDs. Bought myself a vintage Yamaha CD Player circa 1985, fitted two new belts and a laser assembly (still readily available on eBay) and I've gotta say the clarity so far is outstanding! I'm very very surprised! I'm actually planning on pulling all my CDs back out of storage and using them again alongside the SONOS and the Turntable. I will be doing an A-B comparison/listening test in Jan/Feb so I'm looking forward to that :)

    • and many scart-related products too.

      • Can understand CD players being popular. I still have and use a 6 Disc Onkyo carousel CD changer and love it. Along with the resurgence of Vinyl and record players.

Scart on the other hand was never popular over here only found on a few older entertainment and computing products. It is more of a European standard.

Just can't believe they still sell those cd/radio/cassette all in one units.

  • Thanks OP!
    Great Xmas presents :)
    Also 'NO STOCK LEFT'

    • +1

yeah thanks a lot. damn slow work internet.

    • Anyone else that just bought one, probably a good idea to reply back to your email order and confirm that it comes with the Lightning Adapter :)
Otherwise they might not send it and keep it for themselves and sell it at $10 a pop =P

  • What's the Video out for?
    ipod video?

Nice find. Wish they had AM though

    • +3

You don't want AM on a DAB+ radio, it will make you hate yourself :-)

    • +2

The whole point of DAB+ is to replace AM Radio with better sound (at the expense of range)

      • Oh that's what I meant, wasn't sure if they had the AM type stuff on DAB. ABC Radio National etc.

        • Audio quality of DAB+ is worse than FM, but far better than AM.

        • +1

@scubacoles: Agree. If you mainly listen to AM then than DAB+ much clearer and interference free. On the other hand many people will say that FM sounds much better than its equivalent DAB+ station since its lower bandwidth. DAB+ also gets additional exclusive radio stations. Not found on AM or FM. And the more additional stations a radio station tries to squeeze into there allocated space on the dab+ band then the lower quality each station is going to be.

Alternatively you can listen to most of the AM/FM and additional DAB+ radio stations through the internet if you don't have a DAB+ radio.

        • @g12345567: I must be the first and last person in the world to use the Internet for things that already exist.

I absolutely hate watch movies, TV online as well as radio.

I do however find out about a good interview or come across a person of interest having done an interview on radio and download it to listen to later on a portable music player.

But the thought of using data to stream anything live when it's available free and with less electricity is so strange to me. It also has redundancy during power blackouts. I cringe when people don't have portable radios.

Also what do these people do when their Internet goes down like Bigpond did the other day? They must go insane as they can't and have forgotten how to access old school analog stuff. They don't know how to use a phone book, if they even have one or read a real book. /end rant.

  • …….Ozbargained :(

  • WARNING - I jumped on this deal as soon as it appeared and there were 25 left, paid with paypal and got an invoice. Rang them up to check when I could collect and they told me they had no stock and they had oversold it.
    Pretty poor service from RadioParts.

    • +1

Poor form from RadioParts. I can never understand how anyone can 'oversell' anything these days. Proves how poor their inventory & stock control is. I mean c'mon, it isn't that difficult to create a basic spreadsheet is it?
