No data - it's just a sim? What's the big deal.

I got a 3G wireless modem + Sim + 2gb of data from Harvey Norman for $25 two weeks back. Sounds like more of a deal than this…

    Please - enlighten me

    • +1

It has $30 of credit towards services, so it's not just a SIM.

I think I saw a normal stand alone SIM for $2 while I was there also which doesn't come with the credit.

    • +2

It has $30 credit as Smigit said above and one can choose how they wish to apply the credit.

I for one, would choose the 2GB offer for iPad, so it's a bargain for $1 per month for 2GB data or $12 a year for 24GB! Bargain!

      • +1

FWIW, results may vary but the one I was handed has an expiry of 24 Oct 2016, so plenty of time to activate this one. Could certainly stock up if one wished to.

      • -2

        Makes more sense now.

But 12 sim cards over a year. You would need to active each one which is a pain. I wonder if Telstra would do anything about it…

        • +1

I don't think Telstra would care as they are simply starter kits anyway. Not that much of a pain, just jump on the phone and tell them to activate it as a ipad plan. For $1 what more could you ask for?

        • +1

It can easily be activated online. And Telstra doesn't care how many numbers you have associated with your account.

  • Yes I would not be suprised if you have to purchase groceries and not gift cards and transport tickets as the margin on these is so small . Woolies have amazingly high markups on groceries that they can afford to give you the cheap telstra kit. It seems that they can afford to knock 50% off items quite frequently now and still make a profit. My local IGA 7 Day shop is cheaper than Woolies/Coles for all deli items these days and much fresher.

    • It doesn't work when buying a Telstra $30 recharge.

  • +3

Picked one up about an hour ago from Woden, Canberra. The groceries receipt didn't mention the offer (I spent $34 or so), but I showed the staff the Woolies catalog on my phone and he ran it up, and the receipt for the SIM has a 'Telstra Redeem' discount item for $-29.

    • If someone can confirm you have to purchase groceries or would Opal/Bus ticket works too?

      • +1

I purchased a MyBus2 travel 10 ($29.60) plus some random item bumping it over $30 and it worked.

        • Hey mate, can you tell us do you scan your everyday rewards card again and it will take away $29 dollars off from the starter kit? That is after your initial purchase of your ticket and groceries scanned with the Everyday rewards card.

        • +1

@neonlight: It was linked to my EDR card after my initial purchase. When I went to purchase the Telstra sim pack, they scanned by EDR and it took $29 off.

        • I couldnt get it to work for 2 seperate orders - 1 x mybus1 (plus groceries to get it over $30) and 1 x $40 opal top up

The store manager said its probably because the catalogue says groceries so bus tickets or opal top ups didnt seem to activate the offer - although its not excluded in the T&Cs

        • @mrshorty: I just tried for my 2nd pack and the same transaction (1x myBus2 + small item to push over $30) didn't work. Not sure if it's because I've made a claim already, or if they've changed the system to only accept grocery total.

        • @aaronbaron:

Is it possible you already had an > $30 transaction before on your EDR which activated the offer for you?

Either way i assume its 1 per EDR since T&Cs state 1 per person

        • @mrshorty: I read the T&C on the brochure and I can't find where it states 1 per person….

EDIT: Ok, so it says it on the attached photo to the deal but not on the actual Woolworths catalogue.

  • +1

    Confirmed works at Northbridge NSW

  • +2

purchased a $30 telstra recharge, and then subsequently tried to get a starter pack for $1
    no dice

purchased $30 of groceries and then went to front counter, swiped EDR card for -$29 telstra redeem

so it seems like there are exclusions

    • +1

It said doesn't include Telstra recharge or kits I think.

The only thing I want to know is if you top up Opal or buy travelten, can redeem or not

      • It says groceries, so I would assume it would exclude monetary items like gift cards (as well as the explicitly mentioned exclusion of Telstra starter kits, which I would assume include phones).

  • Dang it, gotta miss out on this one. Never bothered to get a EDR.

    • +1

Just get one. Doesn't take long/much effort!

  • Bought 4x$10 skype card for $20 plus $10 groceries, it did NOT work at the scan, but I pointed to the catalog and it was put thru for me manually.

  • Nice offer! Does this offer work in Tasmania (the state of decay)? Woolworths down here runs an alternative loyalty scheme called The Frequent Shopper Club. Has anyone flashed their FSC card and got the deal yet? Thanks.

    • Nope. The same page on the catalogue doesn't have as much, and this offer isn't mentioned.

  • So its one per edr?

    • I don't think there's a limit. Just 1 Starter Kit per voucher.

      • So there's a voucher on the receipt?

        • Yep.

        • +3
        • No

        • @Navgsc:

Oh. Is it mentioned at all on the receipt?
"Telstra $30 Starter Kit for $1 has been linked to your EDR"?

        • +1

@sween64: Definitely no mention on my receipt so went to customer service desk where it was processed manually.

        • +1

          Nothing on the receipt.

        • +1

Nothing mentioned on the receipt, but I got auto -29 when I asked for a starter pack and scanned my everyday rewards card.

  • It doesn't work when buying a Telstra $30 recharge. You need to buy groceries to get the voucher. Asking for a manager to manually discount may work however.

    • The terms and condition said Telstra recharge and starter kits are excluded I thought for the initial purchase

      • Not in the T&Cs I just read. It states $30 groceries must be purchased. I wonder what their definition is.

  • Damn, out of stock @ my Woolies.. Have saved the receipt so maybe I can use it at another store.

  • +1

Got one this morning. There is no voucher, or automagic anything to do with your EDR card. Was a bit of a drama, I bought $30+ of stuff at self checkout, took the receipt to the counter and showed them in the latest catalog. Guy had to refund the old receipt completely, then add the sim pack and make me pay for it all together.

TLDR: try and get it and all your stuff at a checkout on the booth that has the sim packs!

    • There's a bit of drama with this one, the store I went too did the exact same thing as demod's did and while I was there a gentleman came in with 2 receipts and wanting 2 cards but they said it was limited to one per customer.

    • I had same experience this morning at Macquarie.

      • Same experience at Drouin, VIC - bit of drama with the staff but it works.

  • Does anyone know if gift cards work?

    • Doubt it. "Groceries" must be purchased.

  • +1

I think we should really read the fine print, everything we need to know is there.

  • Bought one too at local Northgate SA. No dramas just showed them the catalogue.

  • Can someone link to catalogue please

  • Going there after work. Please don't run out of stock…

  • Bought 2 x 30pk coke for $38, scanned EDR card and paid. Went to counter with SIM cards and went through ID stuff, it came up as $30 until she scanned the EDR card again and then drops to $1.

So I have 1. Has anyone tried doing it twice on the same EDR card? I have another 3 cards (wife plus kids have them when I used EDR to get them free Qantas FF membership) but I'm curious if you can spend $30 twice and get 2 vouchers, or spend $30 and redeem the voucher then repeat the process with the same EDR card.

  • I used a Big W e-card with 7.5% discount for EB members to pay for my $30+ groceries:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/172639

No voucher was printed on my receipt so I took it to the service counter & staff read it, sold me a starter kit for $1, manually overiding the price on their console. Looks like I should have asked them to scan my EDR card & the price may have lowered automatically (from comments others have posted today).

MultiSim starter kit with expiry Sept 2016. Good buy!!

    • So if they didn't scan your edr card you probably still have the right to this offer sitting unused in your EDR account - AND you have until 31 Dec to 'redeem' the offer by requesting the $30 starter pack at a service desk.

By rights when the service desk scans your EDR card with the $30 starter pack purchase, $29 should be deducted from the cost of the pack. </I_think>

      Correct, People???

  • +2

Confirmed- you can buy more than once on ONE EDR card. I have bought two.

But you'll need to purchase $30 with each transaction, for the price to drop (after scanning the EDR card).

Having said that, some stores may just scan your EDR card (without receipt) after you have spent $30, to get the price to drop. Some stores may insist that you spend the $30 TOGETHER with the SIM pack, meaning you have to pay at the counter where they stock the SIM packs.

    Hope this is helpful.

    • Did you just buy groceries or did you also buy vouchers/bus tickets/etc?

      • Yup same answer I'm after

        • Expiry date was October 2016 :)

      • Diapers, milks, basically groceries :)

      • Also, the funny thing is that you have TILL 31 December to redeem, right? Then why are the staff insisting that you HAVE to buy $30 on the spot, when the promo actually ENDS on 24 December???

That's a good question to ask the staff ;)

    • Did it print something on your receipt to say you are eligible?

      • +1

No. I can confirm nothing will be printed on your receipt. Tried three stores, three purchases of $30.

    • Some stores may insist that you spend the $30 TOGETHER with the SIM pack

This may be the case if you didn't scan an Everyday Rewards Card in the groceries transaction. The T&Cs on the flier say to activate, scan Everyday Rewards card to activate, and that you can claim before 31st December by going to the Service Counter.

      • No, I think that is incorrect. I scanned my everyday rewards card at every transaction. Still, that particular store insisted.

        • Did you make both transaction at the same Woolworths? I just tried for my second one today at the same Woolworths but didn't work. $30 of only grocery and tried both buying the Sim pack in the same transaction and separate. No dice.

        • +1

That's wrong. Get them to read the T&Cs again and ask where it says what they are telling you.

        • @aaronbaron: I actually bought my second pack at a different store, without receipt. Just by scanning the EDR card when I told the staff that I had purchased $30 at a different store and they didn't have stock (and that's the truth) :)

  • +1

Just got 1. Bought groceries through self serve then took docket to service desk and asked for $1 sim card.
Staff and manager knew nothing about the deal but scanned sim card and then my edr card but still came up as full price. Had to override price and manager seemed to believe it would only work if the sim was scanned as part of the same purchase.

Seems to only be working on some edr cards

    • Some what similar to me I bought $30 worth of stuff. Got EDR scanned first time. I didn't get anything when I went to claim the offer scanning shows $30 original price.

I explain the offer is meant to be redeem after receipt was printed and stored of EDR card.

She didn't believe me and refused to process the discount, keeps telling me I have to buy together with groceries.

In the end I said I want a refund then we can process the lot together

      She then override manually.

I also had a bit of drama this morning because another lady didn't use up my gift card but charged my credit card more than what they should have etc on my first$30 purchase. Maybe that kind of helped because I was unhappy they wanted to keep me happy I guess.

But she keeps saying I have to buy with groceries at the same time

I printed the brochure page to argue over all this

      • +3

        Precisely my point!

T&Cs state that you have TILL 31 December to redeem, right? Then why are the staff insisting that you HAVE to buy $30 on the spot, when the promo actually ENDS on 24 December???

That's a good question to ask the staff ;)

        • Yeah but they don't seem to care. I asked that question she just keep saying no no no.

I didn't want to argue any further even with the print out

        • @neonlight: Two courses of action:

One: Be the 'nice' customer and go to another woolies

Two: Excuse me Mdm, may I have your name? I will be calling EDR to ascertain the accurate procedure for their promotion, and referencing to this woolies outlet.

          I usually just choose Option 1….. :)

  • Today morning I did Opal card top up $40 at Town Hall and the staff said I can't get this sim for $1 : (

  • +2

OK the actual type of Telstra SIM pack they scan seems to matter. Bought one at the same time as groceries with an attended checkout. First they tried an orange colored "standard" SIM, no good. The purple multi-fit one automatically applied the discount.

  • Ok so I spent $35 on groceries, the lady scanned them through, and took me to the service desk to pay for the groceries and the sim together.

  • Also got one, but had a drama too. Self -checked out with $30+ groceries then went to service desk. They knew nothing about it & scratched around for a catalogue. Then they couldn't find the correct SIM pack, producing an orange colored 'tablet' starter pack. That didn't work. Eventually they found some on the shop floor shelves. Once they'd scanned my EDR, the price dropped to $1. Had to hand over my driving license for ID as well. Expiry Sept 2016, so am happy. Will try another store later

  • +3

    ShootingStar3388

Thanks got 1 today (no dramas)

spent over 30 on groceries then scanned edr/went to service desk after i had purchased groceries.
scanned up a multifit sim as pictured/ paid 1 dollar and away i went.

    • +1

      Snappy1234 you're welcome mate.

Just went to Newington Woolies and half my luck, they don't have any of these multi-fit starter kits in stock. Must be oz bargained!

However, the operator was really helpful and offered me a $30 nano sim starter kit for $1, perfect for my ipad.

She did say that I should have made a $30 purchase PLUS the $30 starter kit, scan my EDR card and it will automatically reduce the starter kit to $1. I said this isnt what is stated in the catalogue nor the flyer I originally posted in this deal. She had to manually override the $30 to sell me the starter kit for $1 when I showed her my $30 receipt.

This is so confusing, WW should make it clear how to redeem this offer.

Also, they didnt ask for any ID with the purchase and no doubt when you activate online, they will ask for your ID then.

      • Just tried my regular store again today for a second time. The lady frowned and said it had to be done together, although I pointed out the difference between the promotional period and the redemption date of 31 December.

She tried to refund my purchase, rescan, tried to put in a dud $30 purchase, but the SIM pack wouldn't drop to a dollar. It did drop by $5 (strange) more than once of the many times she tried.

In the end, I said- I've met the terms and conditions, spent $30, scanned my EDR card, thus I should be eligible. Why don't she just charge me a dollar?

She spoke to the manager (I think), they shrugged and did it.

I'm beginning to suspect it's once PER STORE. because I did manage to get another at a different store by spending another $30. May try one more store to prove the theory!

    • +1

Same here. It was as easy as that! No ID asked for.

    • Well my second attempt went to err shi…using same edr at different store/day
but convinced the CSO after they said shop with sim *as part
      of your shop not after,
      so they just overode price.

  • ID was funny. At Coles the other day they didn't ask for ID and I assumed it was because I scanned my fly buys card but WW still wanted ID. I guess you could register your EDR with fake details.

    • There's no requirement for ID to be checked by the retailer now (there used to be). Now ID can be checked when the SIM is activated.

      • Thats good news was so annoying. When did it change?

      • Really? Where is this stated?

        • On the AMTA website somewhere, I can't find it right now.

      • +1

They punched my drivers licence into the POS

        • +1

Piece Of Sh…OH point of sale.
          Right, cheers.

      • I expect it's still part of WW procedures though, thanks.

  • +2

These Telstra SIM packs are amazing….

I'm sure it was $20 at one point in time (anyone can verify this?), then it dropped to $10. And we all thought that's cheap. Then Harvey Norman sold a couple at $8 (which we thought couldn't get any cheaper).

Those of us who managed to get the Dick Smith $10 gift cards at $5 could buy them at $7.50 if they had more than one (Dick Smith was doing them for $15).

So it couldn't get any cheaper. Then NOW it's ONE DOLLAR.

    What next? Free?
