        • @ajedi2k:
For the N54L, then there's 4 HDD bays, and one optical disk drive (ODD) bay. The OS is normally on a usb stick (there's a USB port internally in the motherboard for this purpose) or one/all of the 4 drives.

you can throw an extra drive in the ODD bay, an use it's sata port. but you'll need a hacked bios if you want AHCI support on that port (for faster access, and TRIM support for SSDs). you can also squeeze another drive in the odd bay (depending on how you arrange them), and hook it up to the rear esata port.

I doubt the Gen8 would have more room inside, and in fact I have heard it has less.

There's certainly not a separate "OS drive" bay on either of them, though.

          thanks Salem

          Hi Rep
i'm also looking for LP graphics card that has an inbuilt audio chipset, has it's own audio output or through HDMI. have one on store if not can you recommend one for G8?

  • I run greens in my own file server with no dramas. Have done so for years.

  • Hey OP, do you have a USB 3 card to go in the N54L so that I can have usb 3 ports?

    Thanks.

    • Sorry - we don't have USB 3 card for microserver yet.

      cheers

  • i dont know much about these servers stuff, but would the 54L use less than a intel s5000vsa server? i dont know the specs really as i got it for free, but seems to use enough power to run a small country. id like to leave this on 24/7 doing its thing (just serving my movies to roku in lounge)

    cheers!

  • Hi Rep,

Any deals on QNAP 2 bay? like this one http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/qnap-all-in-one-2-bay-…

    thanks,

  • I love the N54L and wholeheartedly think it deserves the cult status it has, but I also think it's overkill for those requiring a home media/file server with little other requirements.

For those, a QNAP TS-420 ($369) + Seagate ST4000DM000 4TB drives ($178 each) is the way to go IMO.

Mind you, I'm a Sys Admin, and I love to be informed about the differences between RED and Green drives and the failure rates between Seagate and WD and excitedly reciting the nuanced slight advantages of each in my head.. but more than likely, most of it is for nought ;)

My N54L with 4 drives burns through about 70 watts when streaming a BluRay rip, 65w on start up and ~37-43w at idle. Like running a halogen downlight or two 24/7.

The QNAP with 4 drives use 30w when streaming FHD & torrenting and in the teens at idle.

QNAP also includes DynDNS like service so you can access the unit from anywhere.

Just my opinion but if it helps, it helps.

    Good luck NASing!

  • Hi Rep

Can Kingston 8GB ECC Ram work together with the original 2GB Ram in the N54L?

    • I saw a comment earlier from someone stating that they have this combo working. Go through the thread and you should be able to find it. Not sure if it was in one of the older threads, but there's good reading to be had on people who use it as a NAS

    Hi Rep,

Just wanted to comment on how amazing you guys are. I purchased a N54L around 1pm yesterday. Just got a call from my partner saying that the package was delivered at home. That's less than 24hrs after purchase!!!

I know, right. Mine had same day dispatch.

I wish SE would run for parliament. They at least listen to our wishes!

    • …mine still says Pick….

  • If i put an ESXI and an SSD in to host VM OS's. Will i be able to also put in a 5tb now and then add another 5tb later in Raid 1.
Also, further down the track, could i then put in an additional 2 drives in a RAID 10 configuration?

    …noob alert :)

  • It's a pity that there wasn't a good deal on the 6TB Red drives.

  • +1

N54L sold out, such sadness :( I knew i should have ordered one before work!

Not very keen on getting a gen8, seems like a step back in almost every way except horsepower from what I have been reading?

I have a few hours to decide whether I want to get a QNAP or just save the money for something else ponders
