I'd much rather support SE, though.~~

SPOKE TOO SOON! Free shipping if two or more.

    Bought!

          @ShoppingExpress:

I hope this doesn't get me negged, but can I do two orders? As I actually need 4 drives.

        • @rorymeister:

Got to be 2 please - otherwise stock will run out too quick :P.

          Cheers

        • @ShoppingExpress:
Any chance on a deal for the ecc ram? Really wanna try zfs on my n54l!

        • @viggenn:

Sorry mate - can't do lower on the ram. We do have them in stock and can ship out your orders today if you paid before 1:30pm

          Cheers
          SE

        • @ShoppingExpress: MUST we use ECC RAM?

I have an N42L that could use an upgrade in RAM?

        • @yacman:

You can go for non ECC Ram for the N54L & Below. Gen8 must use ECC RAM at the moment.

          Cheers

Looking forward to seeing some SanDisk MicroSD card deals soon!

  • +1

Thank you! Now I just need to decide which one to get.

  • Does the surge cable count as one item for free shipping?

    • yes any of the product on promotion page.

  • Does the Lenovo iomega NAS support 4tb drives?

  • +1

Nice NAS promotion SE, all that is missing is the Synology 415+

    • +1

agreed! would buy one straight away

  • +1

I'm looking at setting up a NAS. I'd probably want atleast 8TB, but thinking 16TB will future proof it somewhat.

What are the recommendations? There are a lot to choose from. I have no problems with freenas or similar (not played around with it, but would like to). I was thinking about the N54L.

Edit: Will be using the NAS for streaming 1080p to one TV via network, storing photos etc.

    • +3

Depends on what you need it for…

Edit: I have a N54L with Xpenology, can pretty much do all that.

Currently running N54L with Xpenology, 10gb of ram (8gb + 2gb stick that came with it barely goes over 4gb), 4x 4tb green running WDidle and with RAID5.

Just keep in mind RAID is NOT A BACKUP!

      • Maximum Internal Storage 8TB (4 x 2TB) 3.5" SATA

You can modify the BIOS to see 16TB, correct?

        • +2

Don't even need to modify the bios, I just slipped it in. You need to 'update' the BIOS if you want to run a fifth drive off the ODD bay. But you can run Xpenology off of a usb drive.

        • @Jonathon Y:

"Update" of BIOS is only if you want to run 5th drive off ODD bay at full SATA speeds

Will still run at slower speeds without BIOS update.

        • Also there is a modded version of the N54L BIOS that enables hot-swap on the drives.

    • HP N54L Microserver 4 Bay - $259
      4x WD Red 4TB Drive - $220
      Kingston 8GB ECC Ram for Microserver N54L & Gen8 - $126
      Total: $1265 + Free Shipping

      • +2

You don't actually need reds, the green and red are nearly identical aside from the parking and you can use WDidle to change that.

        • Hmm.. Greens are $175, bringing the total to $1085. Perhaps get the fifth drive for $1260. RAID 5 for 16TB..

        • I have greens that I deliberately didn't disable parking to save some power. Apart from the little bit of time for the drive to start when you access it are there any issues I am not aware of????

        • @turbodude:
As a non-TLER HDD fills up with data, the error detection firmware might take too long, and the RAID controller may drop that HDD from a RAID array.

        • @turbodude: Well for normal PC use not really, but for server use…. A server is suppose to run 24/7 you don't want your hard drive to be parking every couple seconds after a while It builds up and the hard drive will fail.

        • @turbodude: I had 4 x Green in a NAS, all died within 1 year (and then one of the replacements died in the same time period). Replaced each drive, one at a time, with Reds. Been running about a year now with Reds - no problems so far.

        • +1

@omniX32: Yeah, fair enough but I've always run the cheapest Seagate drives in all my NAS boxes over the last 9 years and fro memory only had one drive fail and that was a DOA which was quickly replaced by the retailer anyway. I'm currently using cheapie Seagate Greenies and have been for 12 months without any problems at all.

        • I should have clarified that it is just a media server so it is not being accessed very often. And it doesn't run raid. Thanks for the pointers guys.

    • +2

I have an N40L with 16TB raw (4x 4TB Reds). Runs Debian and Plex media server. It's a winning combo.

The N54L is essentially the same except faster CPU. A friend runs FreeNAS on an N54L using ZFS storage and Plex Media Server, sick beard and sabnzbd plugins. It's not noob proof but it's pretty close.

      I lust after a gen8 but can't afford it right now :-(

    • +1

Yep, I'm running a similar system to JonathonY… N54L with 6 x 4TBs (Seagate Green cheapies) & 16Gb RAM running Xpenology & Plex. Incredibly easy to setup and has been rock solid. Couldn't recommend it more however the N54Ls CPU gets hammered when streaming higher def stuff via Plex. It does it and is acceptable for me but I've heard others have issues so maybe look into the Gen8 OR just buy a 2nd hand PC or build one up yourself with a decent CPU and provisions for at least four HDDs then just boot Xpenology off USB and you're away!

I recently recycled a 9 year old 'Shuttle' HTPC with a Pentium 4 CPU, 2Gb RAM and 2 x very ancient SATA connections and run it as a nice little secondary NAS with 2 x 4TB HDDs… works an absolute treat with Xpenology but only the 32-Bit version but that really makes limited difference.

      • Is it during direct play or its it transcoding which is hammering the CPU?

        • +2

Transcoding as Plex needs to work hard to give the ChromeCasts what they want. Direct play via VLC or fed to a WDTV or other Media Player is perfectly fine, the data just trickles off the NAS and the CPU hardly breaks a sweat.

        • @SteveAndBelle:

Good news, all my TVs are Samsung smarts which support everything I've thrown at them

      • i got 7 drives in the N40L, 5 internal , 1 esata semi-internal and 1 extranal
        running windows 8.1 with 6Gb ram :D

        https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=C54Zm-y6rIU

I dont use plex , i just stream from my surface pro via wifi-N without compression and it is fine :)

    • +1

Thanks for all your input ;)

  • DS415+ for $600 and you have a deal

  • +4

    $279 N54L@Budget PC
Isn't this good value considering it comes with 4G RAM.

  • I'd love a deal next time for the Intel NUCs. Preferably on the barebone i5 H model.

  • +3

But you've been selling the N54L in the past for $229?

    • +3

Last SE promo on this was back in mid August at this price. The Australian dollar has depreciated around 8% off the USD since then. Unless the $ improves significantly I can't see there being any movement down.

  • What OS do you put on the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 G2020T ?

    • +1

Anything you want? Some popular options include - FreeNAS, Openmediavault, MS Home Server. Depends on what you want from it, and the level of tinkering you want to do.

      I currently run 3x N54L - 1x OpenMediaVault, 1x MS Homeserver, 1 x Ubuntu.

    • +1

It depends on what you want to do with it.

      For example:
If you want to use it as a NAS/Media Server you can use FreeNAS, NASforFree, OpenMediaVault or Ubuntu Server (if you know Linux of course) or you can get the OS of Synology (XPEnology)

      As a general Network Server:
      Ubuntu Desktop/Server
      Windows Server 2012 Essentials (Expensive)
      Windows 8/7

    • +1

It'll handle ESX nicely if you want to run virtual servers for anything.

But my one is running XPenology which lets you boot into Synology's operating system. The result is a great OS for Plex, Sickbeard, Torrents, TVHeadEnd, email and web servers, VPN, Unifi, iTunes and a really top-notch IP surveillance camera software. It's 100% web front-end means it doesn't need any keyboard or monitor and can be tucked away any old place.

Also worth mentioning: theycan support hot-swap of drives for the RAID controller, just by loading up a custom BIOS.

      • +1

Couldn't agree more. Xpenology was a breath of fresh air for me after running Netgear NAS boxes for many years and then attempting to get my head around FreeNAS on my N54Ls. Xpenology is quick, easy, rock solid, extremely flexible and it just 'works' plus there's such a huge global community ready to help you with any issues you may have at any time.

  • good to see some deals on the N54L.

  • I'm still deciding whether to get the netgear rn314 $449 or the lacie 5big nas pro $459 from umart…hmmmm

  • Can i use the n54l as a cloud server? Autobackup my phone photos etc like dropbox?

    • I use MS one drive, so sync to the net and download back to the N40L. I got office 365, that's why unlimited space.

    • i have an asus router with AI cloud

does what uccoffee does but saves it via the cloud to your personal hdd on the network

    • Yes easily
I have this set up on mine, I've just created a FTP Server on the N40L and a app on my android called Fsync
When I plug in my phone to mains power and it's after 2am it will sync all my photos to my server.

  • +5

I just accidentally bought 2 x WD red 4TB for my NAS. not sure why as I definitely don't need them. they're not even that cheap.

    whats wrong with me

  • +2

Yes, missed the last Microserver deal.
Sadly this is $30 more than the last deal for the G8.
    Such disappoint,
    wow.

    • It's what happens when our dollar starts going down the toilet.

    • The N54L & Gen8 Microservers were some stock we have + new stock - so new higher prices (after averaging) are inevitable.
With N54L EOLed, current New costs from available suppliers are EVEN higher.
Gen8 was a movement in new cost due to AUD depreciation.

      Cheers

  • Hi Rep,

      • Don't have anything specific. Can you recommend a couple?

          1. Any brand in preference
          2. Size preferred
          3. Price range

so we can work it out.

  • Any chance of a good deal on the 6TB WD Red drives?

  • There is a 1 per order limit for the Belkin 600VA UPS, which means you can't get two and free shipping.

Fair enough, given their weight, but I was after a pair. :(

  • +2

Belkin UPS sucks, wish you have special on APC ups.

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/?rf=kw&kw=apc+ups

    • +4

It is good to see someone show/suggest a Brand they are interested in.

We will try to include APC as well in future deal as an alternatives.

      Cheers
      SE

      • +2

Also interested in a 600-1000VA APC — maybe even two, if the price (inc. shipping) is right.

      • How about this one??

        http://www.amazon.com/CyberPower-CP1000AVRLCD-Intelligent-10…

BTW, what VA or Watt of UPS should I buy for the 750 Watt PC?
        800 VA?

        • Two things: Amazon doesn't ship them to Australia, and this runs on 120v not 240v.

Second, UPS capacity depends a hell of a lot on how much you want to use your PC in an outage. Most are fine to safely shut down your gear and protect from spikes, but won't last a prolonged outage.

      • Also very interested

  • Any prices on DS1815+?

    Thx

    • unfortunately not yet - this model is too new.

      • Thanks, how about ds1813+?

  • +1

    Hi Rep

Any chance of free shipping on just the N54L? I purchased a couple of drives from you last month already..

    • Hi grechie88,

Unfortunately we can't go further down for N54L. Please consider again the options available for Free Shipping Combo?
Buying now will be better than buying later - this is my 2 cents.

      Cheers

  • I'm interested to see if you could do a special on a HP 1810-24G v2 Switch please. :)

    • Ignore this request OP. I found out you had one in the Out of Box sale, so brand new with warranty it was still around $80 off RRP. Cheers.

  • I can't get the free shipping to work to Chatswood 2067 for a Synology DS214se and 2 x WD 2TB Red Drive. It just comes out to $0.20?

  • any deals on intel nuc i5s ?

    • no deal for them atm. We are still working on it.

  • Seagate NAS HDD 3.5 inch 3TB with 3 year or 5 year warranty? I'm confused.

    • 5 years

      • +1

        grabbed two with N54L. Cheers.

  • +1

HP really dropped the ball on the next gen microservers, just totally not appealing compared to an N54L
All I wanted was double the cpu speed, HDMI out and USB3 - would've paid $400 easily - They botched it royally.

  • Could you add some Green drives to the promotion? It would seem a shame to put Reds in the Lenovo iomega ix2-200 2 Bay NAS, attached to a 100mbps network…

  • Kingston RAM with shipping 129$,
    http://www.itspot.com.au/kingston-kvr16e118i-8gb-1600mhz-ddr…

    REP can u beat tht?

  • Hey OP, Noob question but what is the max HDD you can put in the Lenovo Iomega ix2-200 2 bay NAS?

  • For those who know about video editing.
I've never had experience with NAS or servers so I appreciate any help.

I'm considering buying a NAS for our video editing studio and so far based on limited research I've seen that raid0 is best for redundancy & performance

2 Editors accessing 1080 50p video at the same time, let's say each project that could be worked on has up to 4 videos playing back in multicam simultaneously

    Let's say up to 3 editors for future purposes: 4 x 3 = 12
    Say it's 28 Mbit/s per 108050p stream= 336Mbits/s not counting overhead.

How much throughput does the NAS\MicroServer have to have? I'm assuming computers will be connected via Ethernet?
I believe 7200rpm HDDs would be the minimum. Which are GOOD value for money HDDs these days, say in 4tb since 6tb are still overpriced/MB

    Thanks

    • you need to run RAID 3

    • Thanks champsk, what about brans of NAS or HDDs?

  • I'm interested in buying 6.HP Gen8 G2020T Microserver, does it have a built in vga card? if not what's a decent LP graphics card?
most i'll be doing with this will be watching movies and Plex streaming.
    thx

    • You need to purchase a VGA card.

We've got this low profile VGA card in stock that's compatible with the Gen8:
